TW: CHILD ABUSE, READ WITH CAUTION

THE MORNING SUN fluttered over Kennedy's bare skin, causing a warm feeling to buzz over her. The small kook felt nothing but peace as she shifted in a sleepy haze. The white sheet covering her body draped softly over the boy next to her as well. For a moment, from the summer air floating through the window to the boy in a deep sleep next to her, her mind traveled back to last summer.

Quiet morning conversations as her mother and brother shuffled outside her door, completely oblivious to the pogue in her bed. It felt like a dream. For Kennedy, it always felt too perfect and turned out she was right. They were never meant to stay in their safe summer bubble, it always had an end to it, whether she liked it or not. But the realization that this time, things were completely changed.

Her vast bedroom no longer existed. She was no longer sneaking JJ out of her house while her family had gone to do their own things. She no longer had to hide who she loved, she no longer had to hide him. Everyone knew now, there was no secret affair, no sneaking around, everything was broadcasted to the world.

Kennedy would admit it, there were moments, aspects of the sneaking around that she would miss. She loved the soft moments that were only meant for them. She couldn't help the mischievous thrill that ran through her skin when the stolen glances and hidden smiles were sent to the other in public. JJ was always hers, and she never had to share and that was something that she missed.

Things were different, that was clear, but it's what she needed. She didn't need any more sneaking around, she needed someone to love her in the daylight. She needed something more permanent and that was precisely what this was. Finally, someone could give her what she needed, they cared about her, not her worth and image, but what she wanted and needed.

The gentle grip of the boy's calloused hand on her back as he held her tight made her almost forget the events of last night. The solace moment gave her the break she needed. All her energy had been drained the moment she stepped into her sister's house.

Midsummers. JJ getting jumped by Rafe. Kissing JJ in front of all the kooks. John B getting pushed by Topper. All of it plagued her body and mind. But being right here, at this moment, that didn't matter. All she cared about was the feeling that pounded in her heart by the act of JJ's body being close to hers. His skin warm against hers gave her the relief she so desperately craved.

As Kennedy's sleep began to fade, she could hear the slight hum of music being played downstairs. A smile trickled onto her lips at the thought of Maggie being home. Kennedy hadn't seen the girl in a few days, since she went to the mainland to visit some friends.

The girl was eager to head down to the kitchen to greet her sister, but the sudden shift and sleep-filled groan from beside her made her freeze. The realization that JJ was in her bed hit her like a semi. It wasn't just that, but the probability that her sister most definitely saw them in the bed. Together.

As much as Kennedy wanted to fight the inevitable, she thought it would be better to get the interrogation over as soon as possible. Kennedy knew having her supposed enemy in her bed looked bad, but keeping the truth from her sister for so long was even worse. They told each other everything, and this was the only thing she kept from her sister. And this secret was something that she was scared to share.

While it hurt her to leave the warmth of her bed and the boy in it, she thought it would be better to get this over with the boy asleep, rather than walking out with him as they eventually connect with the pogues today.

With the small movements from the girl, all she got in response from the boy was a short-lived grumble before he tucked his head further into his pillow. Kennedy's heart thudded in her chest at the minuscule action, but she wouldn't have it any other way. It was so reassuring to feel her heartbeat roughly rather than the normal ache that was left when there was a boy in her bed. She was no longer stuck in the toxic motions with Rafe. Everything felt different andΒ strange, but she loved it.

Kennedy hurriedly got dressed, feeling slightly guilty as she slid JJ's t-shirt over her small frame, but the guilt faded almost immediately as the smell of the pogue fell around her, in follow-suit, she quickly slid her old pajama shorts up her legs that she found in the bottom of a random drawer. As she gazed at herself in the mirror, she practically face-palmed at how horrible she looked. To be fair, having sex with JJ didn't exactly ever leave her in pristine condition, and the slight remanence from the joint they smoked a few hours ago still swirled in her eyes.

She sighed to herself, lightly running her fingers through her slightly tangled hair, hoping to ease her messy bedhead. With a small shrug, she shuffled out of the connected bathroom, spending a moment to admire the blond in her bed.

The wooden stairs creaked with her weight, but she couldn't care less, knowing that Maggie was most definitely expecting her. A smile sprouted on Kennedy's lips watching her sister twirl around the kitchen with a cup of coffee in her hand. The small blonde wished to be as carefree as her sister, but that could never be her. The brunette paused in her steps as she made eye contact with her little sister.

"Morning Kenn,"

The blonde smiled as a greeting, instantly sliding into a barstool, finding comfort in the smell of lingering coffee, "Morning,"

"Would you like a cup of coffee?" The older girl asked, her back turned from the blonde as she reached up to get a mug out of the cupboard.

There was a relief that came with her sister's words, maybe she didn't know about JJ. "Yeah sure-"

The youngest Thornton was cut off, by her sister's next words, leaving an uncomfortable twist in her stomach, "Does your overnight guest want one as well?"

Kennedy's mouth opened and closed in surprise, confused that this was the route that her sister took. "I-"

"I'll admit, seeing you curled up next to your sworn enemy was a little surprising, but hearing that you kissed him in front of everyone at Midsummers, that shook me to my goddamn core,"

"I'm sorry I brought him here, we just didn't have anywhere to go,"

Maggie's teasing smile dropped, hearing the panic in Kennedy's voice, "Kennedy, you are always welcome here, your little stowaway included,"

Kennedy's fear of rejection dissipated as her sister's warm and kind words wrapped around her, "Thanks Mags,"

"Of course Kenn," The older girl leaned over the counter putting her hands softly on top of Kennedy's as an act of comfort, "Now tell me about your supposed enemy,"

Kennedy laughed awkwardly, feeling a little stifled now that she actually had to tell her sister about JJ, "What do you want to know?"

"How'd you become lovers?"

The exaggerated word made Kennedy's features shrivel up into a grimace, "Never use that word again,"

Maggie smiled deviously, loving that she was getting to Kennedy, "What? Lover? Is he not your lover?"

Kennedy teasingly glared, "I hate you,"

"Yeah yeah, but seriously, what is he to you?"

The girl paused in thought, knowing that they hadn't talked about anything of the sort. They had been so busy with John B's fall and Rafe's attack, that they didn't have the energy to make things concrete. While she didn't want to say anything for fear of JJ hearing, the impatient look on her sister's features made her crack. "We're together."

The girl scrunched up her eyebrows, "What? That's it?"

"Yeah, as of right now, we haven't really had the chance to talk about what we are,"

"What do you mean, you haven't had the time?"

Kennedy bit her lip lightly, her chest feeling heavy again, "Well, with everything that happened with John B-"

"Wait, wait, your friends with John B Routledge now? Since when?"

The girl paused, shutting her mouth to think about her next words. A sudden urge to spill everything about the gold washed over her, but she stopped herself, "Since, Riley forced me to hang out with him and the pogues,"

"And you guys just patched things up? Like you and Kie are okay now?" There was a suspicion in her voice, but Kennedy tried to ignore it.

"Yeah, obviously it didn't happen right off the bat, but yeah, now we're good, I guess,"

The light tapping of Maggie's nails kept Kennedy on edge, but the girl knew it was only her sister's habit as she took in new information. "Well, obviously you don't have your weird beef with JJ anymore either,"

"Yeah, looks like it," Kennedy snorted, her tone teasing, trying to ease the seriousness of their conversation. The weight of remembering the events that took place not even four days prior was starting to become too much for the girl.

"Wait, I almost forgot," The small outburst from Maggie caused Kennedy to spaz in her seat. The older girl's tone jumping surprised her, "Did you and Rafe break up?"

The name left a sour taste in Kennedy's mouth, her heart dropping in her stomach, not wanting to even think about that boy. "After him jumping JJ like two times, and him leaving these nasty bruises on my left cheek and ribs, I can confidently say I'm done with him,"

The older girl stood up straight as the younger one showed her the damage. The bruises made fury twist onto her lips, "He. Did. What?"

Kennedy should've expected the impending anger, but some part of her expected her sister to just act nonchalant. "Listen, he's gonna get what's coming to him, I don't want to waste any more time on that piece of human garbage,"

"He can't just get away with hurting you and your friends, especially you,"

"Mags you're completely right," Kennedy began, the energy she once had faded into the morning air, all because of the subject of Rafe, "But I can't waste any more time on him, he doesn't deserve that. My revenge will be me being happier without him and him seeing that. I don't need to take the matters into my own hands, I just wanna be with the people I care about,"

The older girl nodded, her eyes welling with tears as she walked over to the blonde, quickly wrapping her up in her arms. The comforting embrace let the constricting feeling in Kennedy's chest snap, and relief swirled around her body. She wished it would never end.

"I'm so proud of you Kennedy, I really mean it, I'm so glad that you're becoming your own person. You don't need the figure eight, you never did. You're destined for something else, not to be stuck in the figure eight for the rest of your life,"

The embracing words left tears in her eyes, but they were quickly wiped away by the older girl in front of her. Those words meant more to Kennedy than she could ever describe. Kennedy felt nothing but love and comfort from the older girl. A part of her ached to receive the same treatment from her mother. She hated being reminded that her mother didn't care like that, hell, she barely cared at all.

The only thing her mother cared about was their image, and even though Kennedy would never utter the words, it killed her. She was envious of Riley's relationship with his mother, the woman was just so loving and supportive, she was something her mother never could be. At this point, Kennedy could see how close she was to disown her. Especially with what happened at midsummers, Kennedy was on thin goddamn ice. And with how she kept chipping away, she was about to fall through.

"Mom was the reason I came home, you know,"

The words left a feeling of dread to swirl in Kennedy's stomach, "'cause of what happened at Midsummers?"

"I had to come home early all because she was freaking out about you "kissing that retched Maybank boy" as she put it," Maggie sighed, eyes boring into her coffee cup before she took a small sip, "She called me a million goddamn times all for that,"

"I'm sorry,"

Maggie was instantly jumping to fight the apology, "It's not your fault Kennedy, she's absolutely crazy and hates that her golden child is finally breaking away from her controlling hold,"

"I just hate that she can't accept that I wasn't happy," Kennedy exclaimed, her frustration towards the older woman finally beginning to bloom over, "After last summer, you'd think she'd get the hint that I was miserable, but she just ignored it, pushing me into a relationship that was fucking torture,"

"She's selfish Kenny," The brunette stated, reaching a hand across the counter to grab the teens. "She's nothing but a controlling monster, she cares about nothing except our family's image. It's shitty, but I don't think she's capable of caring about anything else,"

"It just hurts, why can't we have just a single parent that gives a shit about us?"

Maggie sent the girl's hand a comforting squeeze, "It's just the way life works sometimes, but that just means as siblings we have to stick together,"

Kennedy instantly retracted her hand, suddenly remembering what the other Thornton sibling had done just last night. The pit in her stomach grew significantly as she glanced down at her hands, "You might just wanna keep that between us,"

The older girl stared questioningly at the blonde in front of her, "What did Topper do?"

"Well, remember how I said something happened to John B last night?"

There was a small pause as Maggie thought back throughout their conversation, "Yeah..."

"Well, Topper kind of shoved John B off of the Hawk's Nest..."

"Are you serious?" Maggie exclaimed, eyes practically bulging out of her skull, the works visibly shaking her. "What happened? Is John B okay? Why were you guys there in the first place?"

"He's okay, he has a broken arm and a nasty concussion, but he should be okay," Kennedy answered, purposefully ignoring the last question, knowing that it would be difficult to come up with an answer that wasn't cryptic as hell.

"You didn't-"

Kennedy's stomach dropped as the older began to comment, but her words got caught in her throat as she glanced behind the blonde kook. After sending Maggie a look of confusion, she turned around in her chair to see a dazed JJ wearing a zip-up hoodie and his clothes from the previous night. The boy wavered in the doorway awkwardly, registering that Kennedy's sister was staring at him with surprise.

"Morning,"

His raspy morning voice caused Kennedy's greeting to get lodged in her throat, completely forgot how good he sounded in the morning. She could feel her cheeks heating up, but she immediately attempted to suppress it.

"Hey, I'm Maggie, nice to finally meet you, I 've heard a lot of things,"

Kennedy was quick to send the older girl a glare, knowing that the pogue would absolutely tease her later for the comment. JJ waltzed into the kitchen, feeling a little less nervous since Maggie initiated the conversation.

"All good things I hope,"

"I wouldn't count on that bud," Maggie snorted, her tone making Kennedy tense up, the blonde seemed to be sending her glare after glare, "Since you were her sworn enemy all about until like two days ago, the colorful things I heard weren't exactly the nicest,"

JJ smiled at the comment, his hand finding a way to Kennedy's lower back as he stood next to her near the island, his warm touch made her stomach jump, "That's fair, a lot of things happened in the past few days,"

"Seems like it," Maggie replied, her voice distant as she glanced down at her phone, a name that Kennedy didn't know came across the screen, and the older girl was quick to scoop up the device, "I have to take this, but when I get back you two are filling me in on everything that's been going on. Also, there's coffee in the pot if you want some JJ,"

"Thanks,"

The words went in one ear and out the other as Maggie slid out onto the back porch, swiftly shutting the door behind her. Kennedy felt the boy next to her shift, glancing up at him, she found him staring right back at her.

"You're in my shirt,"

The girl gazed down at the broad material that draped quite largely on her small frame, shrugging at his words in response, "Yeah, it was the first thing I found,"

"Well, I was looking for it for like fifteen minutes," JJ snipped as he turned the stool where the blonde resided so that she was facing him, his faux annoyance made a vicious smile fall upon Kennedy's features.

"Sucks to suck I guess," Kennedy teased, wrapping her arms around his neck as he invaded her space and stuck himself between her legs.

Goosebumps traveled across her skin as his hands fell into the dips of her waist. JJ rolled his eyes in amusement at the comment, his grip tightening a little bit more as he moved impossibly closer, "You're lucky you look good in my clothes,"

The girl was about to make a snarky comment but she was cut off by a pair of soft yet slightly chapped lips. Her heart thudded roughly in her chest, the reality of her situation finally hitting her full force. Her chest had never felt so light before, she had ached for this for so long. And now, that it was hers, she didn't know what to do with herself. But when she felt JJ's hand drift to her lower back, she got the gist of what she needed to do.

He made her feel things she had never felt before, he made her heart race without even trying. A simple smile makes her stomach erupt in butterflies. She hates how much control he has, but she wouldn't want it any other way. She suppressed a lot of her feelings for the boy while they hated each other, but now, the feelings are hitting her like a freight train. She missed his touch, back then he was always touching her as if he found comfort in having her so close to him. And now, with their truth out, he doesn't hide it like he used to. They're together, they're each other's person, and they want to show it to the world.

Whenever the boy is in her vicinity, she feels like she can't breathe. JJ leaves her air full of emotion and it takes ages before it clears out, but she loves it. Their lips move in perfect sync like they're fated, holding an invisible string that can never snap. She thought it once did, but now she knows she just let go of it, but she picked it up again, her grip even stronger than the last time. When she's with him, she's transported, she can't think when his hands are on her. She's tempted to move their little display upstairs and from potentially prying eyes. But something stops her.

Their moment was immediately ripped away when a loud thumping came from the front door. Kennedy disconnected from the boy with a look of confusion. He had the same emotion swirling in his eyes as he watched her get up from her seat and walk cautiously to the front door. The intensity of the knocking made Kennedy's heart race. There was no voice that came from outside the door, which made her worry even more.

She glanced back to see the blond pogue right behind her, protective and curious energy flowing through him. Kennedy instantly connected the knocking to John B, without hesitation opened the door thinking that one of the other pogues might be behind it with news of the Routledge boy. But Kennedy was very wrong, so wrong that she would regret it her decision later.

The girl jumped back in surprise but mostly fear due to seeing Cynthia Thornton with a look that would kill washed over her features. Kennedy backed up so suddenly that her back collided with her the front of JJ. All the air in her lungs got ripped out at the sight of her mother. She thought the woman would leave her alone, at least give her a few days so she could prepare herself for the inevitable showdown between the two. But that wasn't her reality, her mother was here, staring at JJ with the intent to kill him.

"Kennedy Thorton, I am livid,"

The girl felt like a fish out of water, not being able to come up with anything because of how much terror she felt at that moment, "H-Hi,"

"How dare you do this to our family?" Cynthia hissed, her words spitting venom at the girl. The older woman slammed the door behind her, slowly prowling towards the couple. They hesitantly made their way back, Kennedy mostly pushing the boy back, who would've stood frozen if she wasn't moving him. "First, I saved you from this retched boy last summer, then set you up with a lovely boy from a prominent family. And now, you disregard everything I've done and sacrificed for you, all for this rat from the cut,"

Without noticing, tears trickled down her cheeks, her mother's words stabbing her in the chest repeatedly. But anger flared in her stomach, and she couldn't stop herself, "Don't you dare talk about him like that, you know nothing about our relationship,"

"I know enough," The woman seethed, quickly grabbing Kennedy's arm, and roughly ripping her away from the pogue. The still very fresh bruise from the Cameron boy pulsed on her skin, and the new tight grip from her mother made the agonizing pain throb more. "What are you expecting Kennedy? Do you wanna get knocked up by some loser at the age of sixteen? How the hell do you think that would reflect on our family?"

Kennedy stared at her, Cynthia's audacity washing over her like a tsunami. The girl stared at her with nothing but hurt riddled in her face, "Is that all you care about? Who gives a shit about our image, you should care about me and my happiness for fucksake,"

"I care about you. I wouldn't be here right now if I didn't care,"

"No, you're not here because you care. You only care about how you can benefit from me. If you cared, you would see how happy JJ makes me, but you can't." Kennedy spits, ripping her arm roughly from her mother's constricting grip. "You treat me like your puppet, like you're some sick mastermind that uses me to get what you want. You use me just like everyone else does and I'm fucking done,"

Kennedy's words trigger something inside of Cynthia, and before the blonde could even think the older woman had a tight hold on Kennedy's hair on the back of her head, holding her so she wouldn't be able to move. The girl let out a yelp of pain feeling the harsh tugs on her scalp, Kennedy's tears turned from an occasional drip to a full-blown, cascading waterfall.

The boy who had remained silent for the past minute or two immediately broke out of his daze, soon making his way over to the two with anger flashing in his eyes, "Let go of her right now,"

"Touch me and I'll call the police and get you thrown in jail for real this time," Cynthia threatened, her eyes taunting, reminding him that she was the reason he got arrested yesterday.

"JJ, please don't," Kennedy whimpered, attempting to twist her head so she could see him, but the grip from her mother stopped her. The boy felt helpless hearing her whimper, his heart shattering knowing how there was nothing he could do without getting into more trouble than he was already in.

"Don't you see how pathetic you are? Falling for some ridiculous pogue, who will go nowhere in life? Why can't you see that you're ruining your life?"

"Because I'm not," Kennedy exclaimed, twisting her body away from the woman, pushing her mother away from her as much as she could muster. A painful rip shot throughout her hair and agony throbbed across her scalp, but the woman was now far away from her holding onto a clump of the blonde kook's hair. The image in front of her left a queasy feeling erupting in her stomach. "For the first time in my life I feel like myself, not some girl who caters to the people around her, just Kennedy. And I have people who love me for me, if you can't see that, you're not my mother,"

"Everything I did for you," Cynthia hissed, her words hitting Kennedy like ice. The girl took a shaky breath, realizing how one-sided their relationship really was. The woman would never love her for her, she didn't care like that. "I gave you everything, and this is how you repay me? Whoring around with a pogue? And Luke Maybank's son no less? Have you no shame?"

Kennedy felt like she had been shot, she stepped back, her mother's words suffocating her. She hadn't realized that she had been moving back this entire time until familiar comforting arms wrapped around her, giving her a relief she never knew she needed. His warmth and touch brought her the alleviation that she so desperately needed to feel. Her body felt cold like her mother's words made the adrenaline she felt freeze in time, but JJ brought the warmth back.

"What the hell is going on in here?" Maggie gasped, eyes snapping between her red-in-the-face mother to her sister, who was protectively wrapped up in the blond pogue's arms, the back of her head held delicately cradled in his right hand.

"Were you a part of this?" The eldest Thornton woman questioned, her words interrogative.

Maggie furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, not understanding what the hell was happening, "What?"

"Did you influence this little affair? Did you give her the idea to slum it with some pogue?"

Maggie staggered back in surprise, shocked that her mother would ever talk to them like this, especially in front of someone who wasn't in their family. "What the hell, no? I just found out about it,"

"Well clearly, someone influenced this behavior,"

"Get out."

The woman sent her a look of offense, completely astounded that such a blunt tone would come from someone who looked so weak, "Excuse me?"

Kennedy separated from the boy, there was hesitance from his side, not wanting to have her get near the older woman whatsoever. But he knew Kennedy was going to do what she needed to do, and right now there was no way of stopping her. "I said get the fuck out,"

"How dare you speak to me like that," Cynthia hissed, appalled that her daughter would ever talk to her like that.

"How dare you grab me like you did, how dare you call me a whore, how dare you disregard my happiness just because it doesn't fit into your version of me," Kennedy snapped back, all her frustration and anger, all her hurt and pain began to bubble all the way to the top until she finally popped. The older woman had a bit of fear cross her features and satisfaction fizzled in Kennedy's viens. "You are not allowed to act like you know what's best for me when you don't know a single thing about me,"

"Kennedy, can't you see that you're destroying everything we built, all for some boy?"

"Don't you get it?" Kennedy asked, hating the tone-deaf woman in front of her, each word spitting out like venom, "Whatever you built isn't fucking real and it never was. You're fucking delusional if you thought it was going to last forever,"

"Don't talk to your mother like that,"

The blonde laughed to herself, her tone completely devoid of humor. Cynthia felt threatened as she subconsciously reached for the door knob. Kennedy watched her, eyes taunting, wiping the tears away so she could deliver the line with as much cruelty as her mother had given her for her entire life. "Please, since when have I ever considered you my mother? You're nothing but a miserable bitch that has tried to control me my entire life,"

The slap was swift and harsh, the young girl was expecting it, but it still hurt more than she expected. Her mother's engagement ring caught on the skin of her cheek, knicking the skin just enough to draw blood. Kennedy put pressure on the inflamed area, hoping to subdue the pain, but it only made it worse.

"You don't see me as your mother? Fine. You aren't my daughter anymore, you're nothing to me. Just some lowlife hussie who lost her chance at a good life," Cynthia's vicious words bloom in Kennedy's chest like thorns, stabbing her with each sadistic statement. "I expect you to collect your things from the mansion, but if you don't do it within the day, everything will be thrown away,"

Kennedy sucked her lips inside of her mouth, trying to stop the cry that was just threatening to rip from her throat, but she held in, counting down the seconds before she could let her sobs overflow. She couldn't even let out a reply before the oldest Thorton sibling intervened, tension clear on her shoulders as she walked past Kennedy towards their mother, "You're done here, get out of my house, and don't bother coming back,"

"Don't worry dear, I can only stand in filth for so long," The woman in question scoffed, picking up her purse that she dropped in a fit of rage. As the older woman began to make her way out the door she paused, her eyes quickly zoning in on the boy who began moving towards Kennedy with fast pace movements, "I hope you realize how much you have ruined her life, all her chances at a good and stable world are gone because of you,"

The woman went to say more, hoping to send the teenage boy more digs, but Maggie pushed her out the door. Colorful words erupted outside as the two older Thornton women began bickering, but Kennedy and JJ didn't hear them, the other voices became isolated as their eyes met. The only thing that registered to them was each other, a second flashed by as Kennedy found her way into his arms. The touch was constricting, but it was what Kennedy needed, it was the comfort she ached for the entire time her mother was here. He didn't say anything, and neither did she.

They didn't have anything to say, both trying to come to a sense of what just happened. Both were left haunted by the things Cynthia Thorton said, her dark and ominous thoughts plagued them, having the intent that she wanted. JJ didn't want to listen to her hurtful truth, but he just got the only person he's truly felt at home with, disowned. Kennedy has been beaten and bruised by the kooks for too long, and nothing pains him more than looking down at the girl right now. He couldn't see her eyes, and in a way, he didn't want to. He couldn't bear to see how much hurt she was dealing with, it would be too much for him. So right now, he was going to hold her, hoping that his touch, him being there, could help her feel just a little bit better. But he should've known it doesn't work like that.

She felt as if her heart had been deliberately ripped out, roughly stomped, and trampled on by the words her mother threw at her. Tears cascaded down her cheeks, and Kennedy could only register the misery that twinged in her bones. She lost everything, she lost the security of her family's money, and she lost her home. While it lacked comfort, she lost her room, her safe place. And now she had to start from square one, she no longer had the comforts of her kook life. She was now officially a pogue, no more kook princess. Oh, how quickly she had been de-throned, truly what a tragedy.
