15. locked up [🔒]
A crash of thunder and lightning spread across the dark evening sky as the pouring rain hits your skin. You glanced at your surroundings, as you attempt to escape the shadows of your nemesis who watched you with a keen eye. He had to make sure that you weren't making any subtle plans against them.
Small squeaks of rats filled the dark alleyways as you ran swiftly through them, whilst occasionally stepping on puddles of water.
As your cloak was being blown by the wind, it revealed a silver glinting metal that was sheathed onto your side.
You took off your hood to reveal your face, as lightning struck behind you, thinking you only had one goal set in mind.
You had to steal Corona's priceless treasure.
You promised yourself you wouldn't return to your life of crime. Thieving and taking advantage of people just didn't seem to fit in with you anymore. You escaped from your abusive mother as a child which led you to resort into stealing that helped in keeping you alive in what seemed to be a dim and lonely world.
That was until you met an old and sweet merchant. You were about to steal a loaf of bread from his bakery, until he caught you.
You thought he was gonna punish you, call the guards, or keep you as a slave. He gave you a roof over your head and never left you hungry again. He was like a father to you.
You thought you were finally free from your past, but it caught up with you. The Baron had found you. You had some run-ins with him when you clashed against his band of thieves, stole their loot and injured his daughter Stalyan in the process. He held your father captive and this mission is the only way absolve you of your problems once you pay him back.
You sighed as you arrive at the edge of the forest as the tall trees surrounded you. The storm was still raging on, but you couldn't let that stop you.
A few years back while you were taking a break from your shift at the bakery, you headed down to the forest to get some peace and quiet to read through a book you borrowed at the library. But as you sat down on the lush green grass, you heard voices nearby.
You peaked over a bush as you saw 4 guys exit once large tree. One was a boy who seemed to be too young to be bald at that age, one who seems to be going through a rough puberty, while the other two were just weird as hell. Seems like the two twins were having mood swings.
You overheard their conversation about escaping the castle dungeons, which meant that the tree was a secret passageway to it. You tried to forget about that piece of information so you wouldn't be tempted to use it.
Thank goodness you didn't, cause you'd be dead if you forgot.
You approached the great big tree, it's leaves rustling in sync with the clap of thunder. You squinted as your eyes tried to adjust in the midst of darkness that devoured you as you entered the tree.
The smell of murky puddles and the sound of dripping water began to seem normal to you as you walked through the dimly lit tunnels. The torches that hung on the wall guided you as to where you were going, but the feeling of uneasiness grows as you didn't know what kind of traps you might suddenly set off.
You noticed that cobwebs and dust covered each passageway as you finally arrive at seems to be a dome, surrounded with boulders with a ladder in the middle. It seems to be leading to an upstairs room, somewhere in the castle.
Walking towards it, you prepared yourself to face whatever it may be that rested in the room above you.
You open the hidden door and step foot inside the room. Assuming a defense stance, you scanned the room for other people who might be in there with you. You noticed as you looked around the room, you weren't just in any ordinary room. You were in the Royal Vault!
You thought it was gonna be a lot harder in breaking in the vault, but it turned out to be a breeze.
"They really should upgrade their security here." You chuckled to yourself.
The room was filled with scrolls, books, and other weird stuff that you couldn't understand what their use was. But most important of all you found what you needed the most.
Treasure.
Gold, gems, and other priceless jewelry was scattered among the thousands of chests as your eyes glistened, reflecting all of it's shimmering glory. Your grinned from ear to ear as you grabbed two bags filled the scrolls and emptied it onto the floor. You kneeled on the floor, in front of one of the chests as you grabbed handfuls of treasure and stuffed them into the bag.
As you were busy filling up the bags, the door behind you suddenly swung open, revealing King Fredric and his royal advisor, Nigel. Both of your eyes widened as you realized what was going on.
You slowly began to tremble.
"Guards!" You grabbed the bags and attempted to make a run for it. "Seize her!" The King said as his voice boomed throughout out the entire castle.
You open the hidden door, put the two bags behind your back and began to climb down as swiftly as possible. You closed the metal door so you could slow them down a bit.
But alas, your coat got stuck in the door.
You tried to grab your sword to cut off the piece of fabric that was stuck. But as the door opened, they grabbed onto the end of your cloak and pulled you up with such force, you dropped your sword and the bags of treasure into the pit as your face slammed onto the vault floor.
Chest down on the ground, you tried to stand up as you pushed yourself up. Though one of the guards stomped on your back, preventing you to do so.
They all looked down on you, glaring at you.
You messed up. Real bad.
They began to remove your handcuffs and pushed you into the cell.
You felt the gush of cold wind come through the small window, noticing the storm was gone. You also saw a boy laying down on a prison bench, facing the wall.
You sat down on the bench opposite to his, you leaned forward as you put arms on your knees and your hands clasped together.
You exhaled and sat up straight.
"So what you in for?"
There was no reply.
"Oh come on kid, we're gonna be here for some time." You said as you looked out the window, thinking he might be asleep. "Might as well, become prison buds right?"
You could hear him sigh heavily. "I don't think you'd want to be friends with someone like me."
"Try me." You challenged him. You thought to yourself that he couldn't have done anything as bad as you did. He looks like a measly little kid. "What got you in prison?"
He got up and sat upright. You noticed his eyes were a bit bloodshot and droopy. His nose red and his hair was unruly.
He tried to act tough in front of you. "I'd tell you mine if you told me yours first."
You felt a bit bad about him. You weren't one to go soft on people you just met, but he seems to be having a rough time.
"Alright. But promise you're gonna tell me yours too, alright?" He slowly nods his head.
You talk throughout the night as you felt quickly connected to him. You told him about your past, your interests, things you wouldn't normally tell other people about.
And to think you just met him a few hours ago.
He'd crack a few jokes and you'd laugh. At this rate, it didn't feel like you were locked. Actually, it felt like you were free to be yourself, to let down your guard in front of him.
But a part of you still lingered on the question of what got him prison. He still hasn't talked about it yet, but you didn't want to force it out of him.
As you were about to ask the blue streaked boy, a raven flew by the prison window and dropped something into room. It was a rolled up piece of paper with a red ribbon keeping it in place.
The both of you looked at each other before you picked up and untied the ribbon. You unrolled it and began to read what it said.
"You failed miserably.
Now you're father pays the price, (Y/N)."
You're face was in shock. You began having difficulty to breathe as you the letter slipped out of your hand and rolled onto the floor.
The young boy picked up the letter and began to read it. His eyes widened and looked back at you with great concern in his eyes.
He noticed your eyes began to well up with tears as your body trembled with fear and agony coursing through you.
He felt what it was like to lose a father.
He wasn't gonna let that happen to you.
He grabbed a key from under his pillow and walked to the prison gate, knelt down and swung the door open.
You looked at him in shock, not knowing he had the key all this time.
He stood up and faced you.
He tilted his head at you and gave you a quick smile. "Sooo, you coming or what?"
You wiped your tears and stood up, giving him a smile as well.
As you both walked out, you suddenly noticed how out of all of this has happened, you still didn't happen to catch him name yet.
"My name's (Y/N), by the way. Want to tell me what's yours?"
"It's Varian, m'lady."
A guard behind you noticed you were out of your cell.
"Hey!"
You began to sprint with him, laughing as you escaped only within a few hours of your arrest.
The guard began to chase after the two of you. "Come back here you two!"
Looks like you're in for a wild ride.
