The last four months had been a mix of excitement, nervousness and joy. Even though the doctor's appointments had always confirmed that the baby was fine, Sage still feared for her child. She was now six months pregnant and had her sixth check-up in half an hour.
As she strolled down the sidewalk in downtown Seattle, her eyes were glued to her phone as she sent a quick text to Happy saying she would be at the doctor's office in fifteen minutes. Since Happy headed to Tacoma this morning to visit Lee and Kozik, which they'd do again together tomorrow, he was still on his way back and would wait in front of the doctor's office.
Even though they spent most of their time in Charming, they came to Seattle once a month for doctor's appointments because Sage was absolutely happy with her doctor and Happy wanted his Old Lady to feel comfortable. It also meant she could stop by her gallery regularly and visit Dawn.
Sage would probably never forget the sad look on Dawn's face when she told her four months ago that she was moving to Charming for the time being. Nevertheless, the eldest Trager was happy for her sister and Happy. With the promise that they would continue to see each other regularly, Dawn was able to sleep peacefully at night.
Still, she hoped that Sage and her niece or nephew would come back at some point, preferably with Happy. So everyone would be happy. However, Happy would then have to ask for a transfer, which wasn't always easy.
But for now Sage would stay in Charming until a transfer was even discussed. Even a blind person would see that she missed Seattle.
The tension between Happy, Jax and Sage was a lot better than it was a few months ago. The blonde had accepted that he had to grant Sage her happiness and apparently she had found the right partner in Happy. Sage might soon be ready to forgive him, but she would never forget what he did.
Fawn, on the other hand, was still just as exhausting as ever, only Sage tried everything to avoid her younger sister. Most of the time she stayed away from the club and met her dad, Ima or Gemma in other places. Nevertheless, she wanted to attend a few parties or stop by the club in the afternoon for Happy's sakeแ ณ plus, she wanted to see the others, too.
At least the poisonous fights between the sisters had stopped, as they mostly just ignored each other if their paths did cross unintentionally. Even Tig barely spoke a word to Fawn anymore, and Sage could understand why. But she still felt bad that this meant he only saw Hayley when Jax brought his daughter, or sometimes Gemma, to the club.
For now, however, Sage was just looking forward to getting to meet their child and finally finding out the genderแ ณ which supposedly could happen today.
Before she turned the corner to the doctor's office, she got a coffee to-go for Happy and a tea for herself in a small cafรฉ. Despite it being spring, Seattle was cooler and rainier than California, so Sage was grateful for every little ray of sunshine.
Her mood lifted even more when she saw Happy's bike turn the corner and park in front of the tall building that housed the doctor's office.
With a broad smile, she crossed the street and strolled over to her boyfriend, who greeted her with a gentle but demanding kiss before hooking his sunglasses on the collar of his light gray shirt and letting his gaze slide over his Old Lady.
"Lookin' good", he said with a smirk as he took the coffee with a nod of approval when Sage held it out to him. "I thought Dawn was coming?"
"Well, I have to look good for my man after all", Sage chuckled with a wink and raised her cup to her lips to take a sip. "She wanted to, yes. But she thinks it should be a moment just between the two of us, if we can really tell the gender."
"You always look hot, babe. Or have I ever been able to keep my hands off you?" Happy shook his head, grumbling. Sometimes he wondered how a woman could wrap him around her finger like thatแ ณ but after months of dating, Sage still managed to pique his interest every day.
He nodded slightly at her explanation. "She'll be the first to know when we get back. Ready to find out what we're having?"
"Definitely! I bet she's already losing her mind waiting", the redhead chuckled before nodding. "Yeah, I can't wait! Shall we?"
"Yeah." The SAA wrapped his arm loosely around her shoulder, whereupon she immediately nestled against his side, and led her into the right building before getting into the elevator.
Sage's hand shook slightly as she pressed the button, her body slightly bouncing up and down but there was still a smile on her lips.
"Why are you so nervous, woman?" Happy asked with a chuckle. "You're making me fuckin' nervous too."
"Aren't you nervous?", she asked, letting out a soft laugh. "I mean, we'll probably find out the gender. That means we can finally go shopping!"
She paused, looking up at him with her doe eyes. "You want to know, right? Because I think I would die out of curiosity if we would wait until I give birth."
Happy just shook his head with a grin and gently dragged the redhead out of the elevator when they got to the right floor and entered the large doctor's office. Luckily there weren't too many people there, which meant they wouldn't have to wait that long.
"Of course I want to know", he reassured her. If he was honest, he was just as nervous. "Any feeling what it could be?"
"Oh thank God", Sage exhaled in relief, running her fingers through her bouncing curls. "To be honest, I have absolutely no idea. At first I was sure it would be a boy, but now I'm not so sure anymore."
While an employee sent them straight to the doctor's office, which was surprisingly pleasant not having to wait, Sage took off her jacket and then hung it over the chair.
"What about you? Do you have a feeling?", she asked as she sat down on the lounger, Happy right on a chair next to her.
"No, not really", he replied with a shrug, then grinned. "But as long as he or she looks like you, nothing can go wrong."
"Oh yeah, you think gingers have it easy?" She tilted her head to the side, laughing. "I hope the baby looks like both of us. A mix like that, that would be great."
In the end it didn't matter whether it was a boy or a girl. Both Sage and Happy just wanted the baby to be healthy.
"Ah, Miss Trager, nice to see you", said the doctor as she entered the room, cheerful as always. "And Mr. Lowman, nice to see you too! Then let's see what's changed in the last four weeks."
After putting on gloves, the doctor sat down on a chair on the opposite side of Happy, which she rolled back and forth until she had everything ready.
"Sorry, it's getting a little cold", she warned with a wink before spreading some gel from a tube on Sage's stomach, who had already laid down and rolled her shirt.
Happy smiled to himself as he reached for Sage's hand and just looked at her bump for a while. The baby even made its presence known, probably with a kick, as Happy could see the bump rising slightly.
"Oh, he or she is active today, that might help us find the gender", the doctor announced as she ran the head of the ultrasound over Sage's stomach.
"I hope! I'd really like to know what it's going to be", Sage replied excitedly, her eyes glued to the screen that was turned so everyone could get a good look at it.
"Is everything okay with the baby?" Happy asked after a quiet moment.
"There's nothing wrong with the baby", the doctor assured him with a smile. She had never had any prejudices against the biker, quite the opposite. At every appointment he asked about his child's well-being; the man couldn't be a bad person. "And..from the looks of it, your baby isn't shy either", she added enthusiastically.
"Does that mean you can see the gender?" Sage's eyes lit up, the corners of her mouth reaching from ear to ear so wide was her smile.
"What is it?" Even Happy found it impossible to hide the excitement in his tone, his eyes glued to the screen.
The doctor took a few more measurements before running the ultrasound over Sage's stomach again and nodding eagerly. She chuckled as she was once again able to easily identify the gender.
"Yes, definitely", the brown-haired woman adjusted her glasses before pointing her finger at a specific spot on the screen to explain why she knew what it was going to be. "You can see it clearly here. You are having a girl."
"Really?!" Sage breath got stuck in her throat for a moment before she looked at Happy with pure joy on her face, who looked quite touchedแ ณ a rare sight. "We're having a girl, can you believe it?"
"Fuck no", Happy chuckled nervously, still stunned by the news. "I'm going to have to keep so many guys away from her, I already know."
"The joys of a father", the doctor chuckled while she wiped Sage's stomach clean with a cloth and then printed out the pictures and started to write a little report as always.
"Really? That's your first thought?" Sage asked with an amused eye roll as she quickly wiped some tears from the corner of her eyes. "I can't wait to see you with our baby girl."
"What? You think I'm going to let someone prick break her heart?" Snorting, he shook his head before quickly wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. Of course, he would never allow himself to appear too emotional.
"She'll be beautifulแ ณ just like her mom", he rasped against her lips after standing up, leaning over to kiss her. Then he helped her sit up. "I love you, little girl."
Sage's heart filled with pure happiness, the moment just perfect. Smiling, she stood up and placed a hand against his cheek. "I love you too, baby."
Happy only started saying the three famous words a few weeks ago and Sage melted every time he told her he loved her. She was truly in love like never before and her feelings told her that Happy was definitely the one and would be the only one for her for the rest of her life.
After a short conversation with the doctor and getting the ultrasound pictures of their baby, they left the doctor's office twenty minutes later, got food from the Chinese restaurant and headed back to Sage's apartment where Dawn was already waiting.
แ
"A girl!" Dawn exclaimed happily as her eyes focused on the ultrasound pictures. "I knew it. I really had a feeling!"
Sage just chuckled as she shoved a forkful of the noodles into her mouth and reached for her drink that was on the table. While Happy was still on the phone with his mom, Sage had decided to let Dawn know what it's going to be.
"I still can't believe it", the redhead stated after she swallowed another bite of her food. "I mean, I'm going to be a mom. And we're having a girl. That means we can go shopping for little dresses."
"Oh, we definitely have to do that next time I come to visit you in Charming", Dawn said eagerly, full of enthusiasm. This made her seem even more excited than usual.
Grinning, the dark-haired woman leaned forward and lowered her voice so Happy couldn't hear her. "How did the killer react? Did he cry?"
"It's none of your business, Dawn", Sage replied with a cheeky grin, but also leaned forward to put down her noodles and then leaned back with a contented sigh, one hand resting on her growing bump.
"He was pretty emotional, I think he's really excited for the little peanut", she added with a blissful smile.
"And you just figured that now?" Dawn asked, snorting a laugh. "Girl, as much as he's talking about it his kid, he can't wait to finally see his baby girl."
"Sweet, isn't it?" Sage slowly ran her hand over her stomach. "That such a small thing can crack a killer and even make him shed a tear or two."
Dawn's eyes widened, grinning triumphantly. "So he did cry!"
"No he didn't." Sage rolled her eyes again, laughing. "But I think as soon as she's here and he's holding her for the first time, even he won't be able to hold back anymore."
"I bet", Dawn wiggled her eyebrows with a grin, moving her food around on the plate with her fork. "Where do you want to give birth? In Charming or Seattle?"
"Uh, good question." Sage slid off the sofa onto the floor and in front of the table, where she rested her forearms on, to be eye level with Dawn. "It depends on where we are at that moment, but probably in Charming so Dad can be there quickly."
"He's really suffering from hardly seeing Hayley anymore, isn't he?" Dawn asked with a sigh. "I'd love to punch Fawn for keeping the little one away from him just because she's offended. And for threatening you. Next time I see her I can't promise if I can hold back."
"You know Fawn", Sage murmured. Nevertheless, she felt partly responsible for the situation. "But yes, he suffers and that's why I want him to be able to see at least one grandchild regularly."
"No, I get it", the brunette hummed, pushing her plate aside. "But I would still love to be there."
"You're the first person I'll call when I go into labor, then you can make your way to Charming and maybe even make it in time", Sage said reassuringly, a wistful smile on her lips. "It would be nice if you lived in Charming too. I miss youแ ณ everything here."
"Do you think Happy would ever be willing to move here?" Dawn asked cautiously. It was just a sensitive topic at the moment. "Surely he knows you don't feel comfortable in Charming."
Sage quickly put a finger over her lips to show Dawn to lower her voice. "No, he doesn't knowแ ณ and I don't want him to have to constantly worry about whether I feel comfortable or not."
The brunette sighed but lowered her voice again. "Why aren't you honest with him, Sage?"
"Because he does everything for the baby and me, Dawn", Sage replied with a sigh. "He makes sure I have everything I need. We come here every month to help my homesickness. Right now we're staying with Dad and Ima because he sold his house so he can afford a new, bigger one for usแ ณ and he refuses to take money from me."
Groaning, she dropped her head into her hands and rubbed her temples. "If I told him I still don't feel at home, that would be ungrateful."
"Oh man, this shit is complicated." Dawn just shook her head slightly, but she understood where her sister was coming from. "Relationships aren't easy. See, that's why I stay single."
Thanks to Dawn's sentence, a grin crept back onto Sage's face again. "That's not necessarily much better. Relationships are great. And I'm going to have to get used to Charming whether I want to or not."
"Well, at least you kept your apartment here. That means you can come here anytime for a few days or weeks", Dawn pointed out to give her sister some energy again. She didn't want to be negative. "I know you can do it."
"I'm sure about that, too", Sage agreed with a faint smile.
แ
After Dawn left, the two decided to have a cozy movie night on the couch. Sage loved evenings like this. At home on the couch under a warm blanket, a good movie and snacksแ ณ and the best man she could imagine at her side.
Happy had reluctantly agreed to watch a romance novel and found it difficult to keep his eyes open to all the romance, but he found it amusing how immersed Sage was in the movie and how excited she got every time, even though she had seen the movie a thousand times already.
By now he knew her movie collection and simply accepted his fate when she went back to her romantic movie phase. As long as she was happy, he wasn't interested in what was on TV, as long as he didn't have to torture himself by watching them every day.
Just as he was about to doze off again, Sage's gentle but cheerful voice reached his ears. Pretending he wasn't almost asleep, he straightened his shoulders and sat up a little, apparently too conspicuously, when Sage let out a laugh.
"What?", he asked, grunting, tiredness evident in his voice.
"You can tell me if you don't want to watch these movies", she laughed. Placing the bowl of chips on the table, she sat on her knees, turned towards Happy, and looked at him. "We need a name!"
Happy wrinkled his forehead until he understood what she meant. "Right. Any ideas?"
His tiredness faded slightly when he saw how energetic Sage was. He loved her for how ambitious and energetic she was most of the time and how she couldn't wait when she wanted something.
"So I know that I definitely want the name June. Maybe as second name?", she looked at him, waiting. "Of course only if you like the name too."
"Yeah, sounds good", he agreed with a grunt. The SAA liked the name, really. If it weren't so, he would say it honestly. "Okay, then we still need a first name."
"Maybe you'll find something suitable? Then we would have chosen the name together." Smiling, the redhead tilted her head as she saw Happy thinking hard. "We still have time."
"What about Violet?" he asked after another silent moment of going through all the girls' names he could think of. "Violet June sounds good, I think."
"Violet June", Sage repeated, moving into a more comfortable position, placing her legs in Happy's lap.
She already loved the name, and thinking about naming their baby that made her emotional. That had to be a sign. So, she finally nodded in agreement, a smile on her face. "Violet June it is. I think the name fits our little peanut perfectly."
"Are you sure?" Happy asked, surprised that she actually liked his suggestion. He proudly placed a hand on Sage's bump and lifted a corner of his mouth. "I think he's perfect for her."
"It would be funny if in the end it turns out we're having a boy", Sage chuckled, but she also wouldn't have a problem with that.
"Then we'll just have to rethink things." Happy's raspy laugh filled her chest with warmth and elicited another smile from her. "But I'm sure it's a girl."
"By the way", Happy spoke up again, his slightly more serious gaze now directed at Sage. "I found a house for us. It's far enough away from Fawn but still within reach of the club. It's a little more expensive than planned, but it has everything we need."
"Wait, really?" Sage sat up again, this time sitting cross-legged, and Happy's hand slipped onto her leg, which he gently squeezed. "I mean, that sounds good. But how much more is it?"
"Yeah. After I spoke to my ma earlier, the realtor got in touch", Happy let her know before he pulled his phone out of his jeans pocket and showed her some pictures. "We can look at it on Saturday if we want."
As Sage looked through the pictures, which looked really promising, a feeling of joy actually rose within her. What she hadn't expected was that she could easily imagine what the house would look like furnished, just from pictures.
Until she looked at the price that took her breath away for a moment, and not in a good way. "Six-hundred-thousand? Shit Hap, we can't afford that. You only got three-hundred-thousand for yours!"
"Do you like it?", he asked without answering her question.
"I mean, sure", she answered, a little overwhelmed, but she also wanted to be honest. The house looked freakin' perfect. "But thatแ ณ"
Happy interrupted her with an intense look that silenced her. "We'll look at the house. If it has no flaws and we can both imagine living there, then we'll take it."
"Only if you take money from me, Happy", she said stubbornly, reaching for his hand. "I can't pay the whole rest, but I can pay a large amount. That should be enough to get the house. We'll pay the rest off monthly if that's possible."
"I don't take any fucking money from my Old Lady", Happy replied just as stubbornly, unwilling to start a discussion about it. "I'll take care of this, understand? I'll take care of my family."
Sighing, Sage titled her head back, knowing that Happy would definitely remain stubborn. If she remained stubborn too, they would probably still be living with Tig and Ima in two years. So she had to give inแ ณ for now.
Sometimes it wasn't easy being with a man who had this old school thinking. And yet that was exactly what she appreciated about Happy. He was someone who could take care of his family.
"Okay, I can't change your mind anyway", she finally gave in and leaned her forehead against his. "But I want you to be honest when you need money from me. You know that I earn good."
Luckily, her customers had stayed with her and agreed to discuss their wishes via video call or wait until she was back in Seattle for a few days. The good thing was, thanks to Gemma, word had gotten around in Charming that she was doing personalized paintings and had already gained a few clients in California.
"Just trust me, little girl", he told her with a grunt before his hand went to the back of her neck and captured her lips. All he heard was her pleasant sigh as their tongues met, which was all he wanted to hear at the moment.
