20. The Proposal
3rd Person's POV
Catalina and Jack are dead asleep, lying in the sunlight. Catalina moans as she rolls over in the sand. Jack who is half conscious feels her hand on his chest and her leg laying over his body. He slowly smirks but then his nose twitches making him frown. A bit of smoke drifts by. His nose twitches again. Instantly his eyes open.
Jack groans and sits up. He rubs his head, looks over and sees that all of the foliage in the middle of the island is on fire. Smoke rises high up into the clear blue sky.
Not even regarding Cat, Jack leaps to his feet. Cat groans as half her body falls into the sand. She sits up and rubs her eyes in anger.
"What the hell Jack?"
He doesn't answer. He sees Elizabeth, as she pours out the last of the rum, dowsing a scrub brush at the base of a palm tree. It goes up in flames. She rolls the barrel forward, it starts to burn merrily.
Jack can't believe his eyes. He runs to her waving his hands dramatically.
"Oy! What are you doing? You've burned our food, the shade-- the rum!"
Catalina frowns looking over at dumb and dumber. She groans again then stands up dusting the sand off her.
Elizabeth glances at Jack but continues to throw things into the fire, "Yes, the rum is gone."
She wipes her hands together as one of the rum barrels in the fire explodes.
"Why?" Jack looks at her incredulously.
"One, because it is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into scoundrels. Two-"
She points to the sky.
"That signal is over a thousand feet high, which means it can be seen for two hundred leagues in every direction.Β The entire Royal Navy is out to sea looking for me-- do you think there is even a chance they could miss it?"
Jack doesn't say anything, he just looks at her with wide eyes. Catalina stomps over with her arms crossed.
"You-- you burned up the island, for a one-time chance at being spotted?"
Elizabeth looks over at Cat and nods, "Exactly."
Then she turns toward the sea, "Just you wait, Captain. In an hour, maybe two, keep a 'weather eye open' and you'll be seeing white sails on that horizon!"
She sits down, determined and shields her eyes, scanning the water, waiting, searching. Jack is speechless. He pulls out his pistol and points it at the back of Elizabeth's head.
"I do have two shots." He whispers with a sadistic smile.
I frown and push the pistol down, "Don't Jack."
He throws up his hands and stalks up the sand dune, just to get away. Cat follows him as he stomps away to some black rocks.
"It must me horrible for you Jack," he mimics Elizabeth. "Well it bloody is now!"
"Jackie it will be fine. You get out of everything. You'll figure this out. We just need a little bit more time."
Suddenly, Cat runs into Jack's back as he stops.
"Why'd you stop?"
When she doesn't receive an answer she looks over his shoulder to see what he is looking at.
She frowns, "Bloody hell."
At the crest of the dune, anchored on the other side of the island, white sails glorious against the turquoise waters, is the H.M.S. Dauntless. A longboat is already being rowed toward them.
Jack shakes his head, "They'll be no living with her after this."
Norrington gives Elizabeth a hand disembarking from the raised longboat.
"Elizabeth, I'm relieved you're safe."
He then looks over at Jack and sees a girl behind him.
"Who is this?"
"No one." Jack says as he pushes her farther behind him.
Norrington frowns the motions his men to grab Jack. He stares at the girl who is staring back at him with a blank expression.
"What is your name girl?"
"None of your business." The girl smirks with a hand on her hip making Jack chuckle from nearby.
"You either tell me or I kill Mr. Sparrow where he stands."
Elizabeth shouts a no but Cat just scoffs tolling her eyes. Norrington raises an eyebrow at her silence then pulls out a gun pointing it at Jack. Cat glares as Norrington shoots right in front of Jack's boots. Jack just whines and says watch it mate but Cat knows that Norrington is not joking around.
"Cat. Cat Perez."
Norrington takes a few steps closer to her and stares her dead in her eyes. She doesn't flinch as he raises the gun to her head. He yanks her arm up and pulls back her sleeve to see the pirate brand.
"Miss Perez here seems to be a pirate too. Funny is this your lady Mr Sparrow."
Norrington smiles as the two say nothing. Elizabeth frowns at the scene wondering what she can do. One of Norrington's men come running out from below deck holding a paper. Norrington takes it and stares for a moment then looks up at Cat.
Not knowing what's happening Cat decides to be a jackass and smile and wave. Norrington chuckles humorlessly then walks up to her again.
"It seems as if you are a wanted woman Miss Perez... or should I say Enchantress."
Norrington holds up the paper beside his head and everyone sees an exact replica drawing of Cat. Cat frowns as men come by her and grab her arms.
Norrington nods, "Clap them in irons. And behind Mr Sparrow's back this time."
"Commodore, you can't do that!" Elizabeth runs over.
"You're speaking up for him again?"
Elizabeth shakes her head, "They can locate Isla de Muerta-- but I doubt Jack'll be willing to help us from the brig."
Jack smiles, "She's right."
"We are bound for Port Royal, not Isla de Muerta." Norrington starts to walk away from her but she pulls his arm back.
"No. The pirates have taken Will-"
"Your father is frantic with worry. Our mission was to rescue you and return home. That is what we shall do. Mr. Turner's fate is regrettable. But so was his decision to engage in piracy."
"Commodore, please!"
He just shakes his bead and moves away.
Elizabeth looks to Cat for help but she just shrugs. Frowning, Elizabeth then glances at Jack with pleading eyes. Jack rolls his eyes then looks at Cat and sighs.
"Norrington, think about it... the Black Pearl, its captain and crew... the last pirate threat in the Caribbean.Β How can you pass that up?"
"By remembering that I serve others, not only myself."
Cat groans, "Ugh boring. You need to get laid."
Norrington glares at Cat then turns away.
"Commodore, I beg you-- please do this... for me. As a wedding gift."
Jack claps, "A wedding? I love weddings. Drinks all around!"
Cat laughs as he looks at the two soldiers beside him who are frowning. Norrington turns to look at Elizabeth in shock.
"I am to understand that you will accept my marriage proposal on the condition I rescue Mr. Turner?"
"Not as a condition-- a request."
Norrington considers then turns to Gillette, "Free Mister Sparrow, and prepare to come about. He'll give you our heading."
"Mr Sparrow you will accompany these fine men to the the helm and provide us with a bearing to Isla de Muerta."
Jack shakes his head, "I go if Cat goes."
Norrington glares but then looks at Cat and sighs, "Fine."
Jack is let out of his chains and quickly makes his way over to Cat. He grips her hand then pulls her to the helm. Norrington watches as he whispers to her and rubs her hand. Cat smiles then kisses Jack's cheek. Norrington frowns with a confused face then looks away to see Elizabeth staring at the same thing.
It had seemed as if Mr Captain Jack Sparrow had found his match.
