Chapter 10: Festival Set Up

I had meant for this to come out much earlier, but lost too much time. Reason, slacking off. Also trying to figure out how to write my SAO book, but that's taking a while so I might make something else to fill the time slot for Friday.

This book has a chapter every saturday or sunday. My other books have a chapter released on thursday or friday and I need something to fill the friday slot. Anyway, see y'all in the next chapter and hope you enjoy this one.

-----------

It was dawn right now and the Service Club members sat in their club room, doing their own thing. Y/N's head was lying on the table, asleep. Yukino was reading her book while also patting Y/N's head. Hachiman was trying not to pay attention to what was going on and was reading his own book.

Yui on the other hand was glancing back and forth to the three. And awkward silence. Soon after, Yukino stops petting Y/N's head and the green-eyed boy groggily wakes up.

Yuigahama attempts to strike up conversation.

Yui: The wind's starting to pick up, huh?

Y/N: (yawns) I guess.

Hachiman: ...Yeah.

Yukino: ...It seems so.

There was something amiss, the four of them weren't even attempting strike up conversation. Except, Yui. Then again, Y/N thought back to that question Yui had asked them when they assisted Totsuka. Something about the entrance ceremony.

The only thing Y/N remembered about the entrance ceremony was bumping into someone with black hair.

With nothing to do, the four of them went home as no one came in for any requests or assistance. The next day then rolls around and Hachiman was standing in the middle of the class room. Y/N was also standing next to him. Both boys had a look of disbelief.

Hachiman: What--

Y/N: The hell--

Hachiman: Is this?

Hiratsuka: Do you need an explanation? It was already time for the next class and everyone was still complaining about who should do it. So I volunteered you two.

Y/N: Isn't there supposed to be one person for each representative? Why am I there?

Hiratsuka: For extra insurance. (looks to Hikigaya) Blame yourself for sleeping through homeroom.

Hachiman: Wait, Sensei, that's...

Y/N begins to back away. He already had enough trouble with his sister and disobeying her on some things was already a death wish. Besides, he had already witnessed Shizuka's wrath before and he'd rather not see it again. He backed up and went to his desk, leaving Hachiman to stand up there himself with the teacher.

Hiratsuka: Take your seat. Can't start class with you up here. You guys can pick the girl after school.

Le Timeskip

Boy Classmate: Uh, so do any girls want to be on the committee? Raise your hand.

Well of course none of the girls raise their hand. Saki only stares at her cousin with a playful grin on her face. Y/N sees this and sends a hateful glare, but softens up to a smile. If anything, his family are the ones that can bring out his emotions. Y/N resumes back to what he was doing, messing with his pencil, twirling it between his fingers.

Boy Classmate: If no one volunteers, rock-paper-scissors--

Yumiko: Huh?

Yui: Is it a hard job?

Boy Classmate: (adjusts glasses) It probably isn't. You just do what you're told. But it might be hard for a girl to do it.

Hachiman: (thoughts) Sorry it had to be me, Four-eyes. L/N is probably sorry too as he doesn't want to do this either.

Boy Classmate: (looks to Yui) Frankly, it'd be great if you could do it. You're great with people. You'd be perfect for the job.

Yui: No, I'm not really that...

Minami: Oh, you'll do it, Yui-chan? Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Like, an even with your friend? You'd, like, totally have fun.

Sagami and her clique begin to snicker towards her. Y/N then remembered he saw her and two of her people in her clique at the festival. She was hanging with Hachiman at the time.

Besides, one look at her, Y/N knew she was useless. He thought it was nice to toy around with her.

Y/N: Then are you suggesting you can do it better than her?

Minami: Huh?

Y/N: From the way you act, you like to have fun yourself. You can do it too, if not better, can you?

Yumiko: (looks to Yui) And, like, you're helping us, like advertise. Can't do both.

Minami: O-Oh, really? A-Advertising's really important too.

Y/N made an unnoticeable smirk.

Y/N: (thoughts) Heh, as soon as you make a mistake, you try to cover it up. Arrogant bitch.

Yui: Yeah, yeah! Advertising's really important--wait, I'm advertising!?

Hayato: (stands up from seat) So, basically, we need someone who's good with people and has leadership skills?

Tobe: Dude, that's, like totally Sagami-san.

Hayato: Oh, you're right. Sagami-san'd probably do a good job.

Minami: What? Me? No way! I'm totally not like that.

The two male members of the Service Club look at each other and nod. Minami or Sagami was not known for her leadership skills. If anything, she's useless. Y/N could care less for her. He doesn't associate with people like her. Always trying to be the best and stand out. She reminded him of himself back then.

Hayato: Could you please? Just consider it, okay?

Sagami: (blushes slightly) Well, if no one else wants to do it, I guess I could. But me?

Y/N only stares at the girl before he goes back to looking towards the front, leaning back in his chair slightly. It was going to be interesting to see. To see how far she'll break.

Scene Change, Conference Room

???: Now then, let's start the cultural festival committee meeting.

Inside the room were many students. The ones at the front of the room was the student council. The one leading them was a cheerful and upperclassmen to the Service Club members. This was, Meguri Shiromeguri.

The student council were passing out papers for the festival.

Y/N stood at the back, leaning up against the wall. Apparently, he's a backup member when one of the committee members were absent.

Meguri: I'm the student council president, Meguri Shiromeguri. Let's get right to choosing a committee chair! Would anyone like to volunteer?

No one raised their hands. Y/N only opens one eye. This was a task that required a huge amount of responsibility. People may recommend him because of his sister as she was on the committee for setting up the festival during her time here.

Obviously this created a big amount of awkward silence with Meguri looking around the room. She then took notice of Y/N in the back and Yukino near the front. She knew who their older siblings were.

Meguri: Um, you two are Yukinoshita-san and L/N-san, right?

Yukino: ...Yes.

Y/N: (nods and hums in acknowledgement)

Meguri: I thought so! Haru-san's and Setsuna-chan's siblings! Setsuna-chan and Haru-chan were rivals for the committee chair, but they ended up sharing it, you know! The festival that year went down in Sobu High School history! Would one of you like to? I'm sure you'd make--

Y/N: Not to disrespect or anything, that is my sister. Not me. I appreciate the offer though.

The L/N children were all different with each other. In terms of "elegance," Setsuna had fit the criteria. She also had good leadership qualities, as Y/N and Itsuki saw during the Chiba Mura trip. Both Y/N and Itsuki were laid back, but they can be hard working at times. Besides, Itsuki was into technology while both Setsuna and Y/N did like to write stories.

Setsuna was into the poetry side while Y/N was into novels and war stories when growing up. Besides, "leader" did not fit Y/N's role. The three of them knew that.

Yukino: I'll do what I can as a committee member.

Meguri: (looks down dejectedly) I see.

Minami: Um...

Everyone was quite shocked to see the girl, Sagami, raise her hand. No one was willing to do the task. Hachiman, Yukino, and Y/N only stare at her. Obviously, the three of them can see past her facade.

Minami: (shyly looks away) If no one else wants to, I can do it.

Meguri: (brightens up) Really? Um...

Minami: (stands up) Sagami, from class 2-F. I'm not much of a leader, but I'm kinda interested in doing stuff like this. I sorta want to use this festival as an opportunity to grow.

Hachiman: (thoughts) Why do I have to help you grow?

Meguri: That's fine! In fact, that's great! It's important to step up sometimes! If there are no other volunteers, Sagami-san can do the job.

Everyone applauds her for standing up, but Yukino seems to look sad. Y/N only scoffs as her true nature was a useless person.

Everyone begins to leave the room with Hachiman walking side by side with Y/N. They could overhear Sagami and her clique talking among themselves.

Minami: Oh my god! I volunteered for committee chair on the spur of the moment!

Girl 1: Don't worry! You'll do fine, Sagami-san! You've got us, right?

Girl 2: Yeah, yeah.

Minami: But, like, I think I said something totally embarrassing back there!

Girl 1: No way! It was awesome!

The two walk out to see the other two members, Yui and Yukino talking to each other. Yui spots the two and she waves at them.

Timeskip-Dawn, Service Club Room

Yui: But I never imagined you'd join the committee, Yukinon.

Yukino: Really? ...Well, perhaps. Personally, I was more surprised that those two would join the committee. Aren't there supposed to be one male representative from each class?

Y/N: Forced. Besides, I'm a backup member.

Hachiman: He's not wrong.

Yukino: ...I see.

And again, an awkward silence fills the room before Yui speaks to strike up conversation.

Yui: The committee meets every day, right? I think I'll need to help our class too.

Hachiman: Oh, right. We won't be coming to club for awhile.

Y/N: I suppose.

Yukino: (closes book) Perfect timing. I intended on discussing the same topic today. I'm thinking of canceling club activities until the cultural festival ends.

Hachiman: Sounds good to me.

Yui: Oh, yeah. I guess we should. We should probably hold off until it ends.

Y/N: Isn't that the best call though? Not unless the student council president asks for help.

Hachiman: (closes book) So that's it for today, huh?

Yui: Yeah.

Y/N: Home it is then.

Suddenly, the door is opened, revealing Minami Sagami and two of her clique members.

Minami: Excuse me! Hiratsuka-sensei said I should come here. So you're in charge of the Service Club, Yukinoshita-san? (giggles)

Yukino: (irritated) Do you need something?

The three girls look to each other and they nod, returning their attention back to the ice queen of Sobu.

Minami: I'm going to be the committee chairwoman, but I don't, like, think I can do it alone. Could you help me?

Yukino: ...Self-growth. I believe this goes against the goal you laid out for yourself.

Minami: Well, kinda. But like, slowing the others down would be, like, the worst. I don't wanna mess up. And working with others to accomplish a goal is part of growth too!

Yukino: ...So in short, you want my assistance.

Minami: Yeah! That's right!

Yukino: I see. Then I will. I am a committee member after all. I can assist you as long as it is within those bounds.

Sagami: Really!? Thanks! (returns to her friends) Yay!

Y/N: (thoughts) Self-growth, huh? What she's asking does go against her goal. It may be true that most things can't be done by themselves, but...we'll be depending on her for leading us. Heh.

The three girls leave and Yui looks at Yukino, confused and shock. Yukino had a look of concern, mainly because of what she was asked today. All because she was Haruno's younger sister.

Yui: Weren't you going to cancel club?

Y/N: She may have asked for the club, but she mainly asked Yukinoshita. She could've asked the next day we meet.

Yukino: Besides, I'm doing it personally. It's none of your concern.

Yui: But normally--

Yukino: This is normal. And I have an idea of what is within the scope of the cultural festival committee. Working alone would be more efficient in this case.

Yui: Efficient? Maybe, but I don't like it!

Furious, Yui walks out of the classroom. Y/N was still up against the wall as he stayed to hear what Sagami was saying instead of leaving.

Seconds later, Hachiman grabs his bag and leaves as well. Leaving only Y/N and Yukino together.

Yukino: ...Why are you still here?

Y/N: You're frustrated because they compared you to your sister, right?

Yukino: What does my sister have to do with this?

Y/N: (sigh) Just because they compared you to her, doesn't mean you two are the same. Besides, you proved that to me when we were younger.

Y/N begins to walk out of the room while Yukino only stares at him, wide-eyed. She soon blushes. She knew Y/N meant well. There were just some aspects she just loved about him.

Next Day, Conference Room

Minami: Now then, let's start our regular meeting. Advertising, what's you status?

Boy: The pin-up posters are about halfway to completion.

Minami: Really? That's great!

Yukino: No, we're behind schedule.

Minami: Eh?

Yukino: Have you determined locations for the posters and updated the school website?

Boy: Not yet.

Yukino: Please hurry. Working individuals aside, students considering applying to this school and their guardians check the website often.

Boy: O-Okay.

Yukino: Sagami-san, next.

Minami: O-Okay. Liaison, you're next.

Girl: Yes. Ten groups have expressed desire to participate.

Minami: The number's growing! Maybe it's thanks to the regional award. Then next--

Yukino: Are those groups only from within the school? Have any outside organizations approached us? We use this event as a means to maintain relationships with people in the region. We need to ensure steady participation from outside. We'll also need a schedule for stage usage and staff to manage it. Please submit a timetable for those.

Girl: Okay.

Sagami then begins to hear praise for Yukino instead of her. Sagami looks down dejectedly.

Y/N: (thoughts) It's starting to get to her, huh?

Meguri: I knew Haru-san's sister'd be great!

Yukino: N-No, I haven't done anything.

Random Girl: Yeah, Yukinoshita-san should be in charge.

Yukino: Next, historians. Historians should submit a schedule detailing which events they will cover and equipment requests.

Sagami begins to clench her fists. She wasn't able to do anything. Her desire to "self-grow" was being out shined by the girl that almost everyone would want to lead them.

Timeskip-Class 2-F

Class 2-F were doing a play. A romance one at that. Y/N stared at the board with disinterest and an irritated look. Hayato was playing as "The Prince" in the play. The Pilot was originally supposed to be Hikigaya, but the girls, most of them, opted to switch him with Y/N.

Y/N: Why me...?

Hayato: Uh...

Ebina: Do you need an explanation? Hehehehe...after all, I was the one who wrote that fanfiction! Did you enjoy it!?

Y/N: Like I hell I did! This is not happening!

Ebina: Eh!? As much as I love HayaxHachi, I enjoy Y/NxHaya most! They are the must-buy RPS! No! Must-gay!

Hachiman: (thoughts) What the hell is she talking about?

Ebina: (visible nosebleed) The prince turns the rough-and-tumble pilot into a hanger for his royal plane with his sweet words. That's the very essence of this work!

Y/N: (deadpan) This was not in the translation I read... I can't even do this anyway. I'm on the festival committee.

Hayato: Yeah. Acting would need rehearsal, so it's not very realistic.

Ebina: Oh, right. Darn.

Hayato: Right. So it might be best to rethink the whole cast. Like who's playing the prince.

The glasses girl lets out a shout, grabbing a piece of chalk and edits a small part of the cast, looking quite happy with the edit.

Ebina: There. It's a lot tamer, but I think it works.

Instead of Y/N being the Pilot, it was now Hayato and Totsuka was made the Prince instead.

Hayato: (dejectedly) So I can't get out of playing a part, huh?

Ebina: Oh, that bad-boy look! That's what I want!

Yui: And the only job left is...costumes.

Ebina: You! Kawasaki-san!

Saki: ...Eh!? Huh? Me?

Ebina: I've noticed you alter your blouse and blazer all the time. And this scrunchie is handmade.

Saki: I sewed these by hand, but I can use a machine too. (looks to Y/N and grits teeth) Y/N, help me here!

Y/N only looks away, whistling like nothings happening.

Saki: You son of--come here!

Y/N: Shit!

Dashing out of the classroom, Y/N now has an angered Kawasaki on his tail. Y/N had made a mental note of not angering his cousin or sister, but he seems to forget that. Itsuki too. Totsuka was currently talking to Hachiman, unknowingly using his charm to make Hikigaya agree very quickly.

The only one not doing their job was Sagami, who was too busy fooling around with her clique members.

Hachiman then walked to the conference room, seeing a lot of people outside. Peering into the room, he sees a look of dislike on Yukino's face. This is mostly because her own sister was there. But, she was fine with Setsuna being there as she knows that Setsuna isn't manipulative but rather...aggressive in most cases.

Meguri: Sorry. I asked. I asked them to come. We didn't have enough groups participating, so I thought, maybe they could...Haru-san and Setsuna-san played in a band in her third year! Hiratsuka-sensei was in it too! It was amazing!

Setsuna: Oh, you're too kind, Meguri-chan!~ I'm always happy to help!~

Yukino: I know. I saw the performance.

Haruno: (laughs) Oh, please, Meguri. I was just playing around. Come on, can't I, Yukino-chan? I want to do whatever I can for my lovely little sister!

Yukino: You're free to apply. I'm not the one approving applications anyway.

Setsuna: Eh? I thought you or Y/N would be the committee chair. Where is he anyway?

Haruno: Then who's in charge?

Minami: (from outside room) Sorry I'm late! I checked up on my class and I ended up stuck there!

Meguri: Haru-san, Setsuna-san, this is the chairwoman.

Minami: (bows) I-I'm Sagami Minami.

Haruno eyes her down while Setsuna was not happy at all. Looking at her, Setsuna knew that she wasn't someone to put a responsible task onto. She looked to Haruno, knowing she would manipulate her somehow.

Haruno: Hmm. The cultural festival committee chairwoman was late because she checked up on her class. I see.

Minami: Well...

Haruno: (grins) That's the only way to go! Only someone who enjoys the festival to the fullest deserves to be chair!

Minami: Th-Thank you very much!

Setsuna: (thoughts) Filling her ego now, are we?

Haruno: So, I have a request for you, Chairwoman! Me and Setsuna want to participate too! But Yukino-chan doesn't want me to.

Setsuna: (sigh) There she goes again.

Minami: (looks to Yukino before grinning smugly) Sure, why not? We need more participants, anyway.

Haruno: Thank you!

Setsuna: (sweat drops) Haru-chan, c-calm down now...

Minami: Maintaining relationships with the people in the region, right?

Hachiman then attempts to walk in unnoticed, but was noticed by Haruno.

Haruno: Oh, if it isn't Hikigaya-kun! I remember you from that day! Yahello!

Setsuna: Yo, Hikigaya-kun.

Haruno: I'm surprised. I never thought you'd be on the committee.

Hachiman: I never thought I would either. But as far as surpises go, I think the same goes for your sister.

Haruno: Really? I knew she'd do it.

Setsuna: Y/N was forced, wasn't he?

Hiratsuka was in the background, whistling like she wasn't the one to do it.

Hachiman: Yeah.

Minami: Hey, everyone! Attention please! I've been thinking, and, like, I think committee members need to enjoy the festival most! Like, you can't make something enjoyable unless you enjoy it too! We've been on top of our schedule so far, and I think helping our classes is important too. Why don't we give ourselves a little breather?

Yukino: Sagami-san, I don't think you should take our work so lightly. We've been proceeding with haste early on to give us leeway--

Haruno: We helped our classes back when me and Setsuna were chairwoman.

Setsuna: We only did it because you insisted upon it! (sigh) I don't know why I listened to you then.

Haruno: But we had fun didn't we?

Setsuna: ...I guess.

Minami: Yukinoshita-san, I don't know what's going on between you and your sister, but we should listen to our elders, you know? Let's keep personal matters out of this and think about what everybody wants.

Meguri wasn't happy of what was going on and so was Setsuna. The two had good chemistry when they were in school together and wished for everyone to have fun, but with the current drama going on, they didn't like the atmosphere so far.

Haruno: Wow, you know how to say it! Right?

Soon, the door was abruptly opened. They see a tired Y/N on the other door, panting. He looks up to see his sister, to which he freezes.

His sister was pissed.

Setsuna: Y/N, what did I say about being late to things?

Y/N: Y-You see--

???: You bastard!

Y/N comes tumbling forward and lands on his face as Saki had jumped on top of him, wrapping her arms around his neck in attempts to strangle him.

Saki: You left me to deal with her!

Saki then notices everyone in the room and sees Setsuna. She soon gains a devilish smirk as does Setsuna. Y/N knew what this meant.

Y/N: W-Wait--

Out of nowhere, Setsuna had pulled out some rope, walking towards Y/N slowly.

Setsuna: Hehehehe.~

Outside the room, Y/N's scream and pleas of help could be heard. In Itsuki's office, he got a chill down his spine.

Itsuki: (sigh) You messed up big time, didn't you Y/N?

The day proceeded onward. The classes prepping for the cultural festival and the committee were working their hardest. Y/N was over by Hachiman's station, on some chairs that Setsuna had set up. Setsuna was sitting on one with Y/N to her right, him laying down, head on her lap as he was tied up.

Hachiman was over by his station and saw the workload being piled up. Soon enough, Meguri walks by the three.

Meguri: Maybe I should've vetoed Sagami-san's suggestion.

Setsuna: She means well, but the way she's acting, we won't finish the work in time.

Meguri: Yeah. We won't make it unless we split up the work among everyone here.

She leaves the three and Setsuna goes back to petting her brother's head, who was fast asleep. No thanks to what Saki and Setsuna did to him.

???: (door opens) Excuse me. I'd like to submit an application for a group's participation.

Yukino: Applications go in the back left bin.

The person who was asking revealed to be Hayato Hayama. He then heads for the left back bin. He then spots Hikigaya and the two L/N siblings.

Hayato: Do you have enough hands?

Hachiman: No time to grasp the situation. It doesn't help that Y/N is asleep.

Setsuna: Sorry.~

Hachiman: (thoughts) I can tell you're not sorry.

Hayato: (sweat drops) N-Nice to see you too, Setsuna-san.

Hachiman: Besides, we drones have enough on our subcommittee plates.

Hayato: What subcommittee?

Hachiman: I'm an assistant historian. Y/N is here to help however he can.

Hayato: Huh. Perfect fit.

Hachiman: (thoughts) Wanna take this outside?

Hayato: But as far as I can see, Yukinoshita-san's taking care of everything.

Yukino: ...It's more efficient this way.

Hayato: But it'll turn into a disaster soon enough. You should learn to rely on others before worse comes to worse. I'll help. I'll handle the paperwork for participating groups. As a representative from the participants. How does that sound?

Meguri: Teamwork makes the dream work, Yukinoshita-san. Even Haru-san delegated tasks in times like this.

Hayama's and Meguri's opinion was correct. But because Yukino was always being compared to her sister, she didn't like that. Before she could answer...

Hachiman: Sure, relying on others is important. But every other little shit here was set on relying on others in the first place. Well, basically, you know...uh, yeah. Those jerks shoving work onto me. I can't get a break, but that's not my fault. So if anyone here's taking a break, they deserve to die.

Setsuna: ...You are just like Itsuki sometimes, you know that? He'd come home and complain how much people would put work on him sometimes.

Meguri: (looks to Hachiman) You're horrible.

Hayato: I'll help you too.

Thanks to Hikigaya's small outburst, everyone was determined to finish the work. But, it did make them realize that they still needed to rest.

Yukino: Well, it appears the stress is getting to the assistants as well. I'll reconsider the division of labor. And as for extra help, as per Shiromeguri-senpai's suggestion, we welcome you with open arms. I'm sorry.

Y/N: Finally you realized it.

Everyone looks to the room to see Y/N awake, having his hand over sister's mouth while she struggles to remove his hand.

Y/N: Didn't I tell you years ago? Help is something to ask for when you're in a bind. There's no reason to deny it.

Meguri: (smiles) He's right! We don't have much longer! Hang in there!

Y/N smiles, but then reels his hand back in disgust as his sister licked it, sending a glare towards the older sibling while she only extends her tongue out in a playful manner.

Soon, Minami comes in.

Minami: Sorry I'm late! Oh, Hayama-kun, this is where you were!

Hayato: Hi there. Were you helping out our class?

Minami: Yeah, that's right!

Yukino: Sagami-san.

Yukino then walks up to her, handing her a document and a stamp.

Yukino: I need your approval on these. They've been corrected for any inadequacies.

Minami: (takes paper and stamps) I see. Thank you. And, like, just use my stamp. You don't need me to do it. Like, as a proxy. (hands stamp back) Here.

Setsuna and Y/N: (thoughts) Irresponsible and useless.

Yukino: Then I'll approve them myself from now on.

Seeing the carefree attitude that Sagami had only shocked the other members. Not only that, Minami had accidentally slipped out on what she was doing.

They walk out and Yukino begins to put most of the work into her bag until a hand stops her. She looks up to see Y/N taking some of the work. He notices her gaze and gives a questioning look.

Y/N: What?

Yukino: Why?

Y/N: I'm supposed to be helping however I can, right? I'll just be taking some of these. Nee-san, let's go.

Setsuna: Hai, hai!

Yukino was happy on the inside, but she didn't want to burden him. She already knew what sadness plagued their family.

Next Day

It was the next day and they all met in the conference room. Y/N had arrived with his sister, alongside Hachiman.

When they walked in, Yukino wasn't seen. Half the work, the other half was with Y/N, was still on the desk of where she sat.

Meguri: Have you seen Yukinoshita-san today?

Hachiman: Nope.

Setsuna: I was at home still doing things before coming here.

Y/N: No...I haven't seen her either.

Hiratsuka: (walks in) Yukinoshita is out with a cold today.

Y/N only looks down with a slight hint of anger. She was overworking herself.

Y/N: Baka...
