I don't sing (Nick x Reader)

"Hey, Y/N, are you coming to the lacrosse game later?" Your classmate, Nick ran up to you. You and Nick both had a free period and were in the music room practicing for tomorrow's assessment.

"Hey Nick." You smiled at him. "Yeah, I might come by if I have time. I have a test tomorrow and my mom said I have to study."

Nick smiled, "Cool. So um, do you want to work on guitar riffs for tomorrow? I still need a partner." He asked you.

"Sure, I still need a partner too. I have part of mine written out but I'm stuck on the other half." You replied.

"That's cool. Maybe we could add some singing to the riff." Nick agreed. "Mrs. Harrison always loves when we sing and play instruments."

"Maybe you can sing. I don't sing. Don't like singing much." You reply, returning to your sheet music.

"Aww come on Y/n, I'm sure you sing just fine. Probably better than Carrie." Nick turned his head to Carrie on the other side of the room.

"You guys broke up again?" You asked, hesitantly.

"Yeah, she's been really toxic lately and I just don't know what to do. It's like our fifth break up. I just don't know what to do." He sighs and sits down next to you.

"Do you want me to be honest Nick?" You look at him and he nods for you to continue. "Honestly, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, she is kind of manipulating. It's one of the reasons I stopped hanging with her. But um that sounded rude."

After a few minutes of silence between you two, Nick finally spoke up.

"So I was thinking for the middle of the riff it could have a base drop and then go up to like a really high note with a continuous pattern." He played a few chords on his guitar.

You smiled, "Oh and then we can add like a melody on top."

"Yeah, that would sound so cool," Nick said. "And then maybe you could sing?" He smiled, hoping you would agree.

"I told you silly, I don't sing. Mostly for my cat, but no. I don't sing." You stood up. The free period was ending and you had to get to math next. Nick also grabbed his stuff.

"Lacrosse game tonight? Please?" He asked.

"Maybe." You smiled and walked to class.

~ After school ~

It was around five in the evening. The lacrosse game started about thirty minutes ago and you were walking to the field by the school. You lived close so you had about a half-mile in walking distance. You were really giddy for some reason.

You had finished studying and almost didn't want to come. Your mother was really happy when you asked because you usually never leave the house, you usually just watched Netflix or something.

You were across the street and heard the cheering and yells from the crowd. Your school was up against Glendale, another performing arts school.

You walked around the back of the bleachers until you found an empty spot. You had a perfect view of the field and Nick. He saw you and waved.

He ran over to you by the edge of the field. Many of your classmates and his teammates turned to look. "Hey, Y/n, I'm glad that you could make it." Nick smiled. He was covered in sweat and his hair was a mess.

You hopped out of your seat and jumped down to the field below where Nick was. "Are you kidding? I love social interaction. Just call me social interaction Sam." Nick laughed and so did you.

"Well, the game ends in a couple of minutes so maybe I can walk you home or something." He said.

"Sure, I'm just gonna sit under the bleachers. The sound is too loud for me." You said.

"Cool, I'll get you when the game ends," Nick said, smiling. His teammates were calling him so he ran back onto the field. A cheer rose up as he waved at the crowd.

You sat under the bleachers by the trash can, which wasn't really ideal but you made it work. You started singing to try to block out the sound of the crowd. You subconsciously started to sing a song from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. (All I want - Olivia Rodrigo)

"All I want is love that lasts

Is all I want too much to ask

Is it something wrong with me

All I want is a good guy

Are my expectations far too high?

Try my best but what can I say

All I have is myself at the end of the day

But shouldn't that be enough for me"

You sighed and looked at your phone. Nick should have been done by now. You stood up and was about to look for him

"You can't sing huh?" You jumped a bit and saw Nick looking at you, smiling.

"Jeez, man, you almost put me into shock." You replied. "Wait? You were listening to me this whole time?" You felt kind of angry and embarrassed.

Nick blushed. "Well, yeah. The game was over so I was walking from behind you and kind of heard you singing so I just listened. I'm sorry if that made you uncomfortable."

You tried to shake it off. "Nah, it's all good. Come on then, let's get going."

You and Nick walked silently for a few minutes before he broke the silence.

"Hey, Y/n, I never did tell you the reason why Carrie and I broke up," Nick said. He stopped walking and you turned around to face him.

"Why? Was it something bad?" You asked, concerned.

"Well, no. But she said she knew I liked someone else. So we broke up." Nick replied.

"Oh," You responded. Your heart sank. You had a slight crush on him ever since you two started hanging out during your free period. "Well, I'm sure they're very lucky you like them." You started to walk away, your eyes got watery.

"Y/n, wait! Where are you going?" Nick called after you.

"Home." You replied, still walking away.

"I like you, okay?" Nick yelled.

You froze. You never expected him to hear that from him. You turned around and faced him. He was about ten feet away. He walked up to you. You were kind of shocked.

"I said I like you." Nick smiled nervously.

"I- I like you too." You blurted, covering your face to hide your enormous blush.

Nick gently pulled your hands from your face. "You're beautiful."

"I'm embarrassed." You replied. "I didn't expect you to say that at all."

"Would you maybe want to hang out more sometimes? Like out of school?" Nick asked.

"Is this your way of asking me on a date?" You replied, smiling.

"Maybe? Is that a yes?" Nick said.

"Yes, of course." You smiled.

He slipped his hand into yours and you continued your way back to your house.

"Don't sing huh?" Nick joked as you two walked.

"Oh shut up. I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of you okay?" You said.

"You're the best." Nick smiled.

You two were together ever since that day. It often replays in your mind, playing with your happiness. Well, you were glad you said "I don't sing".
