Mush had a bit of a dilemma. It was basically known throughout the newsies that you and y/c had a thing, and no one was to interfere. Mush was respectful and never planned or even thought about trying something with you, but after getting to know you, something changed. One thing lead to another and then he was in love with you (from afar, of course, so as to not get beat up by y/c). He didn't know what to do. He had to tell someone it was going to drive him crazy. So he weighed his choices and decided Crutchy would be the best option.
