chapter five
Adena started classes that morning with a bit of apprehension. She couldn't eat anything at breakfast because of the tight feeling in her stomach, earning a scold from her classmates eating next to her.
"Eat. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you should know that Adena!" had told her Jade, her roommate, trying to convince the brunette who continued to sip her tea, avoiding everyone's gaze as she read Jacob's Daily Prophet.
Jade was a tall and lean black girl. She most often had her dark hair up in a ponytail, revealing her sharp jawline and pretty face. She radiated confidence but was also caring, always expressing her concern regarding Adena's state even though the young brunette tried to avoid that kind of argument anytime she could.
"You had surprisingly more appetite at Slughorn's dinner," said Eugenia softly, catching everyone off guard with that statement.
The young Ravenclaw looked up at her comrade, hiding her face behind her cup of tea before going back to reading.
"That was because it was boring as hell and eating was the only thing to distract me."
"Regulus Black was sitting next to you, you could have chatted more with him," muttered the redhead girl, thoughtful.
Adena visibly tensed up. "He wasn't of good company," was all she said.
After finishing, they all made their way to class. As it was almost time for classes, the exit of the Great Hall was full of people, nobody wishing to arrive late for their first class of the week. Just as the young Ravenclaw was about to get out of this mess, a person accidentally pushed her, making her collide with a strong chest then making her stumble slightly before being caught by Isaac who was behind her. She lifted her gaze right away meeting Regulus' cold one that turned surprised for a brief instant before his grey orbs became cold again. Adena's hazel eyes were just as surprised as his, before she started frowning, hanging her head down, muttering a quick 'sorry' before escaping the mob.
She let out a sigh of relief as she finally reached the Potions classroom. Some people were already there. Millie, who was seating in front of her, next to Xenophilius Lovegood, one of their housemates, turned around after hearing some noise behind them.
"Oh, you managed to escape you too."
"Yeah," replied Adena with a smile, that Millie returned cheerfully.
That girl was joy and joy only. She would be there to light up anyone's mood. And she had such a kind heart. She was quite the original type as well, with her short purple hair and fantasy style, which made her and Xenophilus Lovegood an eccentric pair when they were together. People would often think she was kind of weird, but Adena rather thought she was interesting. She could never understand where she got all her joy and originality from. The brunette was more of a pessimistic person after all. It was probably because of her Muggle mother that she got that from since you rarely saw witches and wizards with such colorful outfits. She appeared the most normal with her uniform.
More people started to slowly appear in the classroom. Without even realizing it, the brown-haired girl lifted her head up towards the back of the class, unconsciously finding Regulus Black at his usual spot. As if sensing her gaze, he turned his grey eyes towards her, before diverting once again while she did the same. He was odd, more than usual. She decided to not mind too much though.
The days were passing by slowly. Adena was just as bored as ever as she watched the rain pouring down through the window. Autumn was definitely there, she thought. Her mind was full of thoughts. She was trying to find a present idea for her sister's upcoming birthday, but obviously couldn't find any. Candace had planned to throw a huge party for her seventeenth birthday. It was the same Saturday as the Gryffindor vs Slytherin upcoming Quidditch match. Everyone was so excited as it was the first match of the year and that it had been postponed due to the bad weather, so it was now scheduled one week after Halloween. The party would be of recomfort if Gryffindor were to lose, which wouldn't happen obviously, had said Candace. Adena couldn't find any interest in this sport or any sport at all, but her sister had forced her to attend the match as it was her 'special day.' The young Ravenclaw had been warned that she would have to have a drink for her sister's birthday. Even though she told her a million times that she was supposed to patrol around the castle after curfew, reminding her she had prefect duties to attend but Candace was just too stubborn and Adena had to surrender.
After a while of daydreaming, the brunette was sorted out of her thoughts by her three roommates. They were coming to her, seeming a bit hesitant and Jade, the most confident of them all decided to talk.
"Hey there Adena! We were wondering if you'd like to hang out with us next weekend since it's the first weekend at Hogsmeade, you know."
No, she didn't know. She wasn't the type to hang out like that, she wasn't really interested by Hogsmeade. She had visited the village once when she was in third year and once with her sister in fourth year, and that was enough to know what the village looked like. But she had turned down her housemates' offers many times before and she didn't want to seem impolite again.
"It'll be fun, all four of us!" said Eugenia, a glint of hope in her chocolate eyes.
They all looked pleading, maybe they really wanted her to accompany them, thought Adena. And that would be the perfect moment to buy her sister a present. Smiling up at the girls, she then answered.
"Okay, if you say so. But you'll have to help me find my sister a birthday present, please..."
They all smiled widely, nodding their heads enthusiastically.
"Of course, we'll surely find something great," concluded Millie.
The next Saturday the four girls were all ready to go to Hogsmeade. Adena was engulfed in her blue and bronze scarf to prevent herself from getting sick with that chilly wind. She cursed herself for forgetting her beanie, her thick brown hair was now flying wildly in the air. As someone who hated to draw attention on her she felt quite unlucky at the moment. That made her comrades laugh of course. She had no other choice than to tie her hair in her scarf, she felt more comfortable after doing do.
The three girls knew Hogsmeade by heart and dragged Adena anywhere and everywhere. Honeydukes, Zonko, Gladrags Wizardwear, Dervish and Banges as well as some other shops she couldn't remember the name of. They bought a lot of stuff but Adena had preferred not to waste her money. Her parents may be wealthy but that didn't mean they would give her a lot of pocket money. After the girls finished their shopping, all four of them head in a jewel shop while eating some sweets from Honeydukes, that Adena really enjoyed. They were looking for a present to give to the girl's sister. She had thought that maybe a cute jewel would be good. Millie was looking for everything out of the ordinary as the original person she was. Maybe Adena would ask her for help instead of choosing something classical. Before she could even say something, the girl was already showing her a jewel.
"Look Adena, I found out this cute little pendant!"
She was holding in her delicate hands a silver pendant with a shining pink flower attached to it. The brunette smiled immediately after seeing how beautiful it was. She could easily trust Millie when it came to that kind of things, she thought.
"Girls, I found what I wanted," the brown-haired girl called out to the two others admiring with shining pupils the other jewels, which made the seller smile.
Adena paid a few Galleons for that little pendant and kept it safe in a little blue bag.
"Let's go the Three Broomsticks girls, I bet the boys will join us there."
They headed to the pub that was very crowded as the wind was still roaring outside. The warmness of the place was very welcomed. Luckily for them, there were still some empty tables, and so the four girls chose one by the door so the boys would notice them easily. Jade went to order three butterbeers just as the boys appeared in the pub.
"Hello young ladies," said Jacob with a smile as he arrived at their table.
He was obviously accompanied by his best pal, Isaac, as well as another Ravenclaw fifth year that Adena knew as Noah Lee. She remembered meeting his sister at Slug Club. The last person was a Hufflepuff boy with short blonde hair that she didn't know the name of.
Jacob started pushing Eugenia and Millie away on the bench, making the poor girls complain. Isaac decided to seat himself next to Adena as he thought she might be uncomfortable with the boys she didn't know well and Adena was thankful he did. They started chit-chatting a little before Jade got back with more butterbeers she was supposed to order. She left the mugs on the table before looking around the table.
"You fat arses didn't leave me some space to sit," she grumbled slightly before suddenly sitting on Jacob's lap even though it looked more like she was crushing him which made him let out an exaggerated moan of pain.
Everyone laughed, including Adena as she watched the two bicker like an old couple. These two really had an odd friendship, always teasing and mocking each other.
"You little prat. We visited Zonko and I'm warning you," said the young boy while glaring at her back, sulking a little.
Jade only rolled her eyes as she started drinking her beverage, finally over with her friend's antics.
Adena was drinking too, listening to everyone's chatting, thinking that she was actually enjoying that day like the girls had said. She was her usual quiet self, but she was smiling more.
After an hour or so, the small group decided to head back to the school. They all had a great time together, had concluded Adena.
They said goodbye to the Hufflepuff boy who was now known as Chad and all went back to their common room.
On their way back, Isaac started talking, "We had so much fun today guys, we should do that again next time."
They all agreed, and Eugenia added, "See Adena, I told you it'd be fun!"
"Yeah, right," smiled the girl.
"Oh guys, y'all are going to the Gryffindors' party next week, right?" said suddenly Jacob. He wasn't usually the type to miss a party, that was the reason why he knew so many people from every house.
"Of course, we'll be going. It's also Adena's older sister birthday party, I'm sure she'll come too," said Jade.
"I can't decline. If I do, she'll drag me out of my room. But I told her I had to patrol in the hallways after curfew."
"You'll help us get back safely to the common room then," replied Jacob with a little amused smile on his lips.
"I guess I don't have a choice anyway. I wouldn't want my nice comrades to get caught by Filch. It'd probably make us lose points and get you in detention, how sad yeah."
Adena's ironical answer made everyone laugh as they reached the common room after Isaac had answered the eagle's question.
