Madison was sitting in between Peter and Liz. Mr. Toomes was driving. Everyone in the car was quite. Liz was looking at herself in her phone camera and Peter was staring out the window.
The girl could feel the tension pouring off of Peter. Madison then slid her hand into Peter's, gaining his attention. He looked at the girl and Madison leaned into his ear, "Are you okay?"
Peter gave a nod and a fake smile, squeezing Madison's hand. The girl gave Peter a long look, wanted to aske another question, but instead she just rubbed her thumb across his hand, hoping that it would calm him down.
"What are you gonna do, Pete?" Mr. Toomes asked.
"What?" Peter asked, looking forward at the man.
Mr. Toomes glanced at them from the rearview mirror, "When you graduate, what do you think you're gonna do?"
"Oh, um, I don't know," Peter replied, swallowing.
"Don't grill him, Dad," Liz cut in, "He isn't even my date."
"Just saying, you know. All you guys who go to that school, you pretty much have your life planned out," the man stated, still looking at Peter.
Peter shook his head, "Yeah, no, I'm just a Sophomore."
Liz then leaned forward and spoke, "Peter has an internship with Tony Stark. So I think he doesn't have to worry."
"Really?" Liz's dad asked, his voice changing, "Stark? What do you do?"
"Yeah, actually, I don't intern for him anymore," Peter spoke, squeezing Madison's hand even more.
Madison looked at the boy with a worried look on his face, "Seriously?"
"Yeah, it got, um... boring," Peter answered, never taking his eyes off of Madison.
Liz turned and looked at them both, "It was boring? You got to hang out with Spider-Man."
Madison gave a wince at the name, feeling the tension increase in the car. She gripped onto Peter's hand, matching the strength the was holding onto her with.
"Really? Spider-Man? Wow. What's he like?" Mr. Toomes asked, his voice changing even more.
"Yeah, he's nice," Peter answered, "Nice man. Solid dude."
Madison could feel her heart race increasing as she started to fiddle with Peter's hand that was in hers. She didn't know why, but a pit in her stomach started to form as the tension continued to build in the car. She was started to zone in and out as she controlled her breathing.
"I've seen you around, right?" Liz's dad asked, "I mean... Somewhere. We've, uh, have we ever? Because even the voice..."
"Um, he does Academic Decathlon with Maddi and I," Liz answered, not looking up from her phone, "And he was at my party."
"It was a great party, really great, yeah. Beautiful house, a lot of windows," Peter rambled, his knuckles turning white.
Liz let out a huff, "You were there for, like, two seconds."
"That was.. I was there longer than two seconds," Peter countered.
"You disappeared," Liz stated, looking up from her phone.
Peter shook his head, "No, no. I did not disappear."
"Yes, you did," Liz shot back, "You disappeared like you always do. Like you did in DC, too."
The car then came to a stop and Madison continued to look down at her hand intertwined with Peter's. She felt like the car became stuffy. Peter gave the girl a worried look as Madison continued to mess with his hand.
"That's terrible, what happened down there in DC, though. Were you scared?" Mr. Toomes asked, "I'll bet you were glad when your old pal Spider-Man showed up in the elevator, though, huh?"
Peter gave a small nod, "Yeah, well, I actually didn't go up. I saw it all from the ground."
"Yeah," Madison forced out, trying to act apart of the conversation, "Very lucky he was there that day."
Mr. Toomes then gave a grin that made Madison's blood run cold, "Good old Spider-Man."
No one spoke as Madison took a deep breath, trying not to lose her cool. She had a feeling that the man in the car with her knew something. But she couldn't aske questions without drawing attention.
A car behind them started to honk and Liz spoke, "Dad, the light."
Liz's dad then pulled up to the school. The dance was already going on and the whole school was their. Mr. Toomes stopped the car, "Here we are. End of the line."
"Thanks, Dad," Liz stated as she opened the door.
"You girls head in there, Gumdrop," the man smiled, "I'm gonna give Peter the, uh, the 'Dad Talk'."
Liz then turned to Peter, "Don't let him intimidate you. He knows that you're not my date."
Liz then got out of the car after saying goodbye to her father. Madison looked at Peter and gave a weak smile, feeling her heart race increase as she let go of his hand and climbed out of the car.
Madison walked inside with Liz, her mind full of worry. But after a few minutes Madison thought that she was just being overdramatic. Which made a lot of sense to her, the past few months had been insane. Hell, Madison's whole life was insane.
So she decided that she was overreacting and that she was just nervous for this dance. And when she saw Peter walk through the doors, she gave a smile and walked over to him.
"Hey. What did he say to you?" Madison asked, wanting confirmation that the bad feeling was just her imagination.
Peter gave the girl a frown, "Gotta go. I'm, I'm sorry. You don't deserve this."
Madison didn't have time to reply as Peter ran away, leaving her in the middle of the dance floor alone. The girl felt her heart start to pond as she looked around.
In an instant Madison started to run after Peter. She knew something was wrong and it had to do with Liz's dad. And she needed to know what it was. The Homecoming dance could wait.
She ran down the empty hallway, finding Peter's tie and jacket scattered through out the hall. Madison stopped for a second and slipped off her heels, once they were off the resumed chasing after him, going faster than she was before.
