Chapter Eight: The Upside Down
chapter fourteen , Gone & Found
━━━━━━━━━━
Hopper slumps to the ground, and lets out a painful groan, from the electricity that was forced into his body.
"Okay, now what do you know?" One of the suited men questions.
Hopper slightly opens his mouth. "I'm sorry. Did I stutter?" he squints his eyes. "I told you. Everything."
The man tases Hopper again. Hopper leans over as more sounds of pain leave his mouth. His mind goes to Gus. How many times did they do this to her in order to make her forget most of her childhood?
"What do you know?" The lady inquires.
Hopper inhales a deep breath, trying to gain strength to talk. "I know you do experiments on kidnapped little kids, whose parents' brains you've turned to mush. And when you can't control those kids, you fry their brains; forcing them to forget everything."
The three suited people exchange a look. How the hell did Hopper know about Number Five?
"And I know you went a little too far this time and you messed up in a big way..." Hopper continues. "...I mean, you really messed up, didn't you? Big time. That's why you're trying to cover your tracks."
They all shift, obviously knowing Hopper was right.
"You killed Benny Hammond, you faked Will Byers' death. Didn't even bother looking for Sofía Alvarez. You made it look like another little girl just ran away." A smirk forms on Hopper's lips. "See, I told you. I know everything."
"All right, who are you working with?" One of the men asks.
"Nobody." Hopper answers. "But I did give all this over to my friend at the Times. He's gonna blow this thing wide open."
The chuckle that Hopper lets out, irks them. The man tases Hopper again and he groans.
The two men grab Hopper and force him into the metal chair.
"You're just a junkie." One of the agents claims. He grabs one of the syringes off the tray. "A small-town cop who had a really bad week. Took one too many pills this time."
The woman stands in front of Hopper. "You made a mstake coming back here."
"No, I didn't." Hopper keeps his eyes glued to the ground. "Here's what's gonna happen. You're gonna let me and Joyce Byers go...you're gonna give us anything we need, and we're gonna find her son."
"And you're gonna help us find Sofía Alvarez."
The woman's amused smirk falls and her jaw clenches.
"And then we're gonna forget that any of this ever happened," Hopper adds.
"Oh, is that right?"
Hopper keeps an unreadable expression across his face. "Yeah. That's right."
...
"Want one?"
Eleven looks at the Licorice Gus was holding out to her. The girl accepts the candy and smiles softly. "Thank you."
Gus returns the same smile. Both the girls silently eat the candy. The brunette looks at Eleven. "Hey, I have a...question. And if you don't want to answer, that's fine."
Eleven looks at Gus.
The teenage pulls her brows together. "Why is it when you were scared...I felt it too? And when we were walking it was the same speed and steps?"
"In sync." Eleven answers. "In the Upside Down."
Gus raises her brows, "Whoa...cool."
"Well, thank you for helping me in the Upside Down," Gus says.
The ends of Eleven's mouth twitch, "Do anything for friends."
Gus smiles softly, she pulls Eleven into her side and the girl lays her head against Gus.
"They're gone," Mike says, entering the gym.
"What?" Lucas questions.
Gus looks at Mike.
"Nancy and Johnathan. His car's gone." Mike explains.
"They're probably just sucking face somewhere." Dustin states.
"Dustin..." Gus groans with her eyes closed.
"No. No way!" Mike shuts down Dustin's idea.
"Did they go with the chief?" Dustin asks.
"I don't know." Mike squeaks.
"No," Eleven voices.
"What? Did you see them? Do you know where they went?" Mike asks.
"Yes." Eleven answers.
Gus didn't know why but she felt nervous about Eleven's answer.
"Where? Where did they go?" Mike questions.
"Demogorgon." Eleven answers.
Gus inhales, "Of course, they did."
...
"Where's the girl?"
Hopper holds the smoke in his lungs and then exhales. "You gotta give me your word," he says. "Nobody's ever gonna find out about this. And those other three kids, those boys, you're gonna leave them alone. And the teenager...her too."
"Teenager?" Dr. Brenner pulls his brows together.
Hopper tenses up. He couldn't tell Brenner about Gus. If he did, then Brenner would no doubt want to take Gus back. Hopper would die before letting that happen. "Just give me your word. Then I'll tell you where your little science experiment is."
After Hopper gave Brenner all the necessary information. He was led to Joyce's interrogation room. She was taken out of her handcuffs. Joyce and Hopper are walked out of the room and the guard guides them through the halls.
"I don't understand," Joyce whispers.
"We came to an agreement." Hopper answers.
"What?"
"Look, everything that's happened here and everything that's gonna happen, we don't talk about. You want Will back?" Hopper looks at Joyce. "This place had nothing to do with it. That's the deal. You got it?"
One of the guards opens the door to a room, and Joyce and Hopper enter.
"What is this?" Hopper looks at the hazard suits.
"Protection. The atmosphere is toxic." The doctor states.
Joyce's jaw goes slack, "But my son's in there. H-He..." she looks at the doctor.
Hopper grabs one of the suits, "Put it on."
☆
Fallon walks into the house and flicks the light on. She looks forward and her heart jumps into her throat, seeing her parents standing in front of her.
"You guys scared--"
"Where have you been?" Cynthia inquires.
"Are you okay?" Greg asks.
Fallon looks at the clock on the wall and she pulls her brows together. "I didn't break curfew." she says.
"Did I ask you why you were late?" Cynthia tilts her head.
"No, ma'am."
"Then why would you just assume that's what I was talking about?" Cynthia asks.
Fallon bunches her shoulders. "I don't know."
"We just...we drove by the theater today." Greg says, his arms folded.
Fallon's eyes widen and Cynthia arches a brow.
"Were you there?" Cynthia asks. "Did you do that to the theater?"
"Yeah, I was there--"
Cynthia places a hand on her forehead. "Unbelievable--"
"But, I didn't do it," Fallon adds.
Cynthia takes her hand off her forehead and places her hands on her hips. She inhales a breath and she quirks a brow.
"I thought you weren't hanging out with Gus anymore?"
Fallon pulls her brows together, "What? Mom Gus didn't do this."
"Oh, enough, Fallon!" Cynthia snaps.
Fallon presses her lips into a firm line.
Cynthia shakes her head, "I am tired of you defending her."
"Honey, can we hear our daughter out, please?" Greg lightly touches his wife's arms.
Cynthia clenches her jaw and exhales through her nose. She motions her hand forward, "Go on."
Fallon inhales, "Gus wasn't the one who vandalized the theater, all right? She had nothing to do with it." she explains. "Gus is a good person--"
A scoff comes from Fallon's mother's lips. "Good people don't get arrested, suspended, and fight everyone they come across, Fallon."
Fallon shakes her head, "Gus puts others above her own needs, she never gives up on anyone..." guilt forms in Fallon's chest. "...no matter how much they've hurt her."
"And...with all due respect, I don't feel comfortable with you speaking about her that way." Fallon straightens her back.
Cynthia pulls her face, "Oh, is that so?"
Fallon's jaw goes slack, but she tries to stand her ground. "Uh...y-yeah."
Fallon had more to get off her chest. But she felt like she was going to shit her pants. She has never in her entire life stood up for herself. But, she had to keep going.
"And...and I don't want to go to law school."
Greg's mouth hangs open and Cynthia grinds her teeth together.
"Oh?" Cynthia seethes. "Then...what would you be interested in Fallon Price?"
Fallon looks at the ground, but she slightly shakes her head. Stand your ground.
"Cosmetology--"
"Hair school?!" Cynthia takes a step back, like she was gonna fall; Greg grips her arms and balances her.
Cynthia exhales softly. "I need to lie down...I need to...I need to go lie down..." she wipes at her forehead. "I'm sweating and I already took my shower--Fallon, we had a plan."
"Mom, that was your plan," Fallon states. "And I just...didn't want to disappoint you."
"But, obviously, I ended up doing that anyway."
Cynthia's jaw goes slack when her daughter looks at the ground again. And in that moment, Cynthia realized just how much pressure she put on Fallon. Who knows how many times she made her daughter cry after ignoring her or even shutting down her dreams. All Fallon was trying to do was make her parents proud. But with the way Cynthia always acted, it made it seem like she never was proud of Fallon.
"I'm sorry, mom." Fallon's voice starts to shake.
Greg clears his throat and Cynthia looks at her husband. He motions his head toward their daughter, telling his wife to say something.
Cynthia looks over at Fallon and lets out a breath of guilt. "Oh, sweetie..." she walks over to Fallon and wraps her arms around her neck.
Fallon inhales a soft breath and a lump forms in her throat. She wraps her arms around her mom, keeping her cries in. Fallon doesn't even remember the last time she's had a genuine hug by her mom.
"I know I don't...show it, but I am proud of you--how could I not be proud of you?" Cynthia pulls Fallon out of the hug and lightly touches her face. "You're my daughter. You're Fallon Price."
"I know that whatever path you choose for yourself, I'm gonna be proud of you." Cynthia kisses the top of Fallon's head. "And we will be right there cheering you on."
"That was...actually really sweet." Greg chuckles. "Didn't think you had it in you."
Fallon's mouth hangs open and so does Cynthia. Fallon quietly laughs.
"Oh, hush, Greg!" Cynthia laughs.
Greg walks over to his two girls and wraps his arms around them.
"Fallon?"
"Yeah, dad?"
"What's with the red on your hands?" Greg asks.
The family separates from the hug and looks at Fallon's red-stained hands.
"Oh...I helped Steve clean the paint off the theater earlier." Fallon answers.
"You and Steve? Are you two--"
"Ew, mom." Fallon shakes her head. "Never ever would I get near him like that."
Cynthia holds up her hands in a surrendering manner.
Fallon looks away from her parents, a thought going through her mind.
Or any other 'him'.
...
"Guys, guys this is crazy! We can't wait around." Mike states
"Mike, we're still fugitives. The bad men are still looking for us." Lucas claims.
"Yeah, and we don't even know where your sister is," Dustin says.
"El and Gus can find them."
Dustin deadpans. "Mike, look at her. And Gus still doesn't have a hang on her powers yet." he points out. "I think we should stick to the Chief's plan."
"We are sticking with Hopper's plan." All the kids look at the tired brunette. "We stay here, keep El, out of sight, and keep her safe," she continues. "That's the most important thing, remember?"
"Besides, she's okay. She's with Johnathan." Lucas says.
"Yeah, and she's kind of a badass now, so..." Dustin starts off towards the door.
Gus pulls her brows together, "Hey! Wh-where are you going?" She questions. A pain quickly shoots through Gus' head, but she ignores it she quickly stands up.
"Yeah, you just said to stick to the plan!" Mike calls out.
"I am. I'm just gonna go get some chocolate pudding. I'm telling you, Lunch Lady Phyllis hoards that shit!" Dustin explains.
"Are you serious?!" Mike throws his hands in the air.
"El and Gus need to be recharged!" Dustin shouts back. Lucas follows Dustin.
Gus bites her lip, "W-Wait! I want pudding!" She starts after the two boys.
☆
Steve slams his foot on the brake and Fallon jerks forward. Her head hits the dashboard and her mouth hangs open. "Ow!"
"Why didn't you stop your head from hitting it?" Steve asks.
Fallon's eyes blow wide, and she looks over at Steve. "Why didn't you stop the car with ease?"
Fallon looks forward and a crease forms between her brows. "We're here already?"
Steve and Fallon both had the same thought, which terrified them. But they both wanted to go over to Jonathan's house to apologize. Fallon figured that Gus would be there too since Jonathan became friends again. She thought they were going to be talking about how much they hated Steve and her now.
But she wasn't there. Instead, they just found...a whole other mess.
"Hey, what happened to your hand?"
Fallon's eyes shift to the bandage on Nancy's hand. Her back straightens, "Nancy...? What's going on...?"
"Uh--nothing, it's just--"
"Is that blood?" Steve asks, grabbing Nancy's hand.
"You would know." Fallon chuckles. "It's because you got your shit rocked today--"
"I got that, thank you." Steve snaps, looking at her.
Fallon rolls her eyes and folds her arms.
"Seriously, Nancy--"
"No--seriously, Steve. Everything is fine." Nancy snatches her hand from Steve's. "It was an accident."
Fallon raises her brows, "Are you okay?" she asks. "Give me the green light and I'll grab my taser."
"No, it's--"
"Wait a sec. Did he do this to you?" Steve asks.
"Let her answer first." Fallon scoffs.
"No, he didn't." Nancy says.
Steve presses a palm against the door and tries to force himself into the house. "Nancy, let me in!"
"No, Steve--"
Steve pushes the door open and stumbles into the room. Nancy walks over to Steve and Fallon pokes her head into her house. Her eyes travel around the living room and her eyes blow wide. "What the fuck..." her eyes shift from the painted letters across the wall and land on the christmas lights. Fallon's eyes land on the bat with nails hammered into it and her heartbeat fills her eyes.
"Uh...I think my parents actually want me ho--"
Nancy pulls her gun out and aims it at Steve.
Fallon's mouth drops open and her eyes widen. "Oh My God--what are you doing?!"
"Wait--What? What is going on?!" Steve shouts.
Fallon quickly steps into the house, "Nancy--"
"I need you both to get out." Nancy orders.
"Yep, yep. We are going, Steve...l-let's go." Fallon grabs his arm.
"What? No--Nancy--"
"You two have five seconds to get out!" Nancy shouts.
Fallon lets out a breath, "Okay, can we all just calm down?! I don't understand--"
"This is a joke, right?" Steve stammers. "Just put the gun down."
"I'm doing this for the two of you."
"How...sweet?" Fallon bunches her shoulders.
The lights begin to flicker violently and Fallon looks around. Her eyes snap back over to Nancy. Fallon's hands start to shake. Fallon wanted nothing more than to understand what was going on. But Nancy was counting down and all Fallon wanted to do was leave.
"Nancy, please--"
"Nancy." Jonathan calls out to the brunette.
"Three. Two..."
"Oh My God!" Fallon flinches.
"No, no, no, no!" Steve panics.
"NANCY! THE LIGHTS!"
Nancy lowers the gun and looks at the lights that were blinking more agressively than before. Fallon pulls her brows together, "Wait--what is happening?"
Jonathan grabs the bat off the table and stands next to Nancy.
"It's here."
"It's too late."
"Wh-what's too late?" Fallon stammers.
"Wait, what's here?"
"Where is it?" Nancy asks.
Fallon's breathing quickens, seeing the panic expressions across Nancy and Jonathan's faces.
"I don't know--I don't see it."
"Where is what?"
Fallon shakes her head, she goes to walk toward the door. "N-No...whatever's going on. You can leave me out of thi--"
The ceiling caves in and a Nancy immediately starts to shoot her gun. Fallon's hands fly over her ears, "Nancy, what the hell?!--OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!"
A creature falls into the living room. Fallon's jaw hangs open, "WHAT THE FU--"
Steve grabs Fallon's arm as soon as Jonathan grabs his hand and drags him down the hall behind Nancy. The teenagers all run through the hall.
"JUMP!!!"
"JUMP?!" Fallon shrieks. Her eyes spot the bear trap on the ground and she quickly jumps over it. The teens make it into Jonathan's room. Fallon quickly slams the door shut and her eyes stay on the pinewood door and she shakes her head. "Uh-Uh--what the fuck was that?" she shakily asks.
"Jesus! Jesus! What the hell was that?!" Steve shouts.
"What the hell was tha--"
"SHUT UP!" Nancy and Jonathan shout.
The room quickly falls silent, but the screeching of the creature was still heard outside of the room. Fallon inhales a deep breath to try and keep her breathing under control.
"What's it doing?" Nancy asked, the gun aimed at the door.
Jonathan slightly shakes his head, "I don't know."
Nancy and Jonathan wait for the Yo-Yo to move, but nothing happens. The lights stop flickering, causing the teens to look around.
"Is it over?" Fallon asks.
Nancy pulls her brows together, "I don't know."
"Do you hear anything?"
Jonathan shuts his lighter, "No."
One by one, the teenagers leave the room. They make it back into the living room, the creature nowhere to be seen.
...
Hopper and Joyce continue through the Upside Down. They both decided since St. Wallace was closer than the Byers'. It was difficult having to navigate through the area due to it being dark, there being vines everywhere, and a mysterious flakes. The area almost made the place look unrecognizable.
Hopper didn't know who Sofía Alvarez was and he was pretty sure that Gus didn't know either. But he knew from the look on Gus' face when she talked about Sofía, that she wasn'g going to rest until Sofía was found as well. And Hop was going to do everything he could to find Sofía.
"Hop!"
Hopper snaps out of his thoughts when he feels Joyce's hand on his arm. He turns and looks at the woman beside him. Joyce motions her head forward. Hopper looks ahead and sees the building in front of them.
St. Wallace.
He remembers when he first met Gus. She was breaking curfew (obviously) and he found her in the library with two other orphans getting high. The girl was in the back of his squad car talking about why feet smelled and why noses ran. Then she said something along the lines of, "Fuck you, Pig."
Hopper didn't adopt Gus instantly. I mean, could you blame him? But he decided to check up on her time from time and Mrs. Wallace thought that a change of scenery would be good for her. So, reluctantly, Hopper agreed to taking her in. He just wished he realized sooner just how much of a blessing it was.
Joyce and Hopper make it into the building.
"Did Gus say where the Sofía was hiding?" Joyce asks.
"She said under a bunk bed." Hopper answers. "I just don't know which specific room."
Hopper looks at the Joyce, "Stay close."
They walk through the house, checking each room and under each bed for Sofia. Hopper looks under the bed, but he doesn't see anyone there.
"Shit." Hopper lifts his head up. "She's not under this..." he trails off his sentence, not seeing the woman next to him.
"Joyce?"
Hopper stands up, his breathing quickening. "Joyce?!"
Hopper runs out of the room, looking around.
"Hopper, I'm up here!"
Hopper shifts his eyes toward the ceiling and runs up the stairs. He checked each room, before making it to the one, Joyce was in.
Hopper exhales a sharp breath of relief. "I told you, to stay clo..." he trails off him sentence, seeing the young girl in Joyce's arms. He cautiously approaches Joyce and falls to his knees.
"Is this her?"
Joyce brushes some of the black hair out of the girl's face. Hopper looks at young girl's white nightgown.
"It has to be..." Hopper says.
"She's breathing--thankfully." Joyce whispers.
Hopper lets out a soft chuckle, "Okay, one kid down...one more to go."
...
"This is crazy..."
Fallon looks over at the boy, who was mumbling under his breath, and fiddling his fingers.
"This is crazy!"
Fallon jumps from his sudden outbursts. Steve runs over to the phone and places it against his ear. Nancy lets out a breath of frustration and stalks over to Steve, before he could call anyone; the girl tosses the phone to the ground.
"What are you doing? Are you insane?!--"
"It's going to come back!" Nancy snaps. "So you two need to leave. Right now."
The room falls silent and everyone stands still, looking at each other.
Suddenly, Fallon sprints toward the door and out of the house. "You don't have to tell me twice!" she makes it to the car and scoffs. "Steve!"
Steve runs out of the house and stumbles down the porch steps. He shakily digs the keys from his pockets, the keys slip from his finger and land in the gravel. Fallon anxiously looks around the driveway. Steve unlocks the doors and Fallon quickly pulls open the door and gets into the car. Before Steve gets into the car, he notices the lights begin to flicker once again in the house.
Fallon looks at Steve and pulls her brows together. She follows his eyes and her eyes widen, "Steve, no..."
Steve inhales a breath and holds it, thinking.
"I am so...fucking serious--don't--"
Gunshots are heard inside the house, causing both teens to quickly look back at the house. Fallon's heart drops into her stomach. Steve sprints back toward the house and Fallon's eyes widen. "Oh, my...shhhiiit!" she places her hands on her head and hits her head on the dashboard.
"My mom always tells me to take accountability--to apologize!" Fallon gets out of the car and slams the door shut. "And now look where I am--look it now, Ma!"
Fallon thought they were all insane for willingily fighting an unexplainable creature that honeslty looked like bats or guns wouldn't effect it. And she thought that she was insane herself, debating on going back into the house. But what kind of friend would she be leaving her friends? What kind of person would she be running away while her friends were in danger?
Hey, Universe I know I'm not your favorite person right now. But...please don't let me die. Love, Fallon.
Fallon runs toward the house, "No fucking way, no fucking way..." she opens the door and Fallon's sees Steve hitting the crature repeatedly with the bat. Fallon runs over to Jonathan, who was still on the ground; shaken from almost dying. She grabs one of his arms and helps him onto his feet.
"He's in the trap!" Steve shouts. "He's stuck!"
"Jonathan, now!"
Fallon ushers Jonathhan over to Steve and Nancy. Jonathan flicks the lighter on and tosses it onto the ground. The trail of gasoline catches fire and runs toward the creature; bursting it into flame. Fallon holds a hand over her eyes and steps away from the large fire that was now overtaking the hallway.
...
"Found it! I knew she was hoarding it."
Gus sighs with relief.
"I knew it. Always lying, saying she's out." Dustin says.
"I can't believe she still does that..." Gus says quietly. "Bald-faced liar."
"MIKE, I FOUND THE CHOCOLATE PUDDING!" Dustin shrieks.
Gus walks over to the fridge and she grabs a can of pudding. She opens the can and begins to eat it. The brunette closes her eyes and sighs with contentment. She turns towards the two kids and notices them looking at her with scrunched brows.
Gus swallows the pudding. "What?"
"Are you...okay?" Lucas asks.
Gus chuckles, "No, not at all. This has all been...a lot for me--"
"Yeah, Gus he was talking about with your powers," Dustin says.
Gus slumps her shoulders with disappointment. "Oh. Well...I don't know, I still feel drained. This was my first time actually using them purposefully, y'know?" She arches a brow.
"It's okay, because once you get the hang of your kick-ass powers--we'll have the dynamic duo of Eleven and Guster!" Dustin laughs.
Gus snorts softly and pulls the bill of Dustin's hat down. She grabs a lot of pudding. "Come on, let's get this back to El."
The three make their way into the lunch room.
They set the pudding down in front of Eleven.
"Where's Mike?" Gus questions.
"Nancy." Eleven answers.
Gus nods her head, understanding what she's saying.
"This'll charge your battery right up, I'm telling you," Dustin says.
Gus reaches for another pudding cup, but Mike runs into the room. "Guys! Guys!" He shouts.
Gus whips her head towards him, "What is it?"
"They found us," Mike says.
"The bad men?" Gus questions.
Mike nods his head, "The bad men." He confirms.
"Shit..."
☆
"How did they find us?"
They all make their way down the stairs.
"I don't know, but they knew we were in the gym," Mike says.
"Lando." Dustin says.
Gus pulls her brows together, "Who the hell would rat us out?"
The door in front of them swings open, causing them all to stop. Lights flash on them and men in uniforms run towards them.
They all run up the stairs. The group turns around a corner. But once again, they stopseeing more soldiers approaching them.
"This way!"
They run out of the hall and turn left, going a different way. A lady with guards behind her aims their guns at the group. Gus' eyes widen.
Eleven gets in front of Gus and everyone else. She stares at the woman holding a gun, with a pointed look.
Gus watches as the woman starts to bleed from her eyes and nose, along with the other men behind her. They all soon collapse to the ground.
Gus takes a step back, "Holy Shit..."
Eleven falls to the ground.
"Holy Shit!" Gus repeats. They all crouch down and check on the girl.
"El, are you okay? El!" Mike says.
"She's just drained," Dustin says.
"No, something's wrong. El? El!"
Gus checks her pulse, "She's still alive...barely..."
"We gotta go," Lucas says.
"Leave her."
Gus freezes from the familiar voice. She inhales a break and turns toward the man. Her jaw goes slack and her body goes numb. The brunette quickly stands up.
"You...it's you." Gus takes a step back.
Dr. Brenner looks at the brunette. His eyes seemed uninterested, until he saw the defiant look in her eyes. He tilts his head, finally recognizing her. Now he understood why Hopper wasn't specific about 'the teenager'.
"Number Five." He smirks. "You're here which means you must remember."
"I knew you were strong--"
"Is that why you left me?!" Gus shouts, her face getting hot. "Used me?! Made me forget?!"
"You know why I had to do that." Dr. Brenner says. "You were dangerous—"
"You made me that way!" Gus' eyes sting with tears.
"Number Five, I can make you better."
Gus grits her teeth and shakes her head.
Dr. Brenner looks at the three boys. "Step away from the girls."
"No, if you want them you'll have to kill us first!" Mike shouts.
"That's right!" Dustin agrees.
"Eat shit!" Lucas shouts.
Guards grab the boys.
Gus snaps her eyes over to the kids and her eyes widen. "Hey! Let them go—"
A collar is slapped over Gus' neck and her eyes widen. "No!--"
Electric shocks shoot through Gus' body and she collapses to the ground with a scream.
"Gus!"
"Leave her alone!"
Tears blind Gus' vision as the electric waves continue to course her body. Gus' body convulses as the shocking continues. The shocking abruptly stops and Gus' body goes slack. She inhales a deep breath and coughs. Dr. Brenner crouches beside her and Gus meets his eyes.
"You were always a hard one to control. It seems you and Eleven have that same problem."
Gus slightly opens her mouth to say something. "F-Fuck...you..." her tone was laced with so much coldness, that it made Brenner's blood run cold.
"You're not taking me back. You're not taking either of us."
"I created you." Dr. Brenner's expression darkens.
"Then you forced me to forget. You murdered my mother and my dad disowned me." A low ringing starts in Gus' ears. "Eat shit, Papa."
Dr. Brenner's throat quickly starts to close. He pulls his brows together and touches his throat. The building begins to shake and Dr. Brenner looks back at Gus, who had blood leaving her nose. He then grabs the remote and turns the voltage up once again, causing Gus to let out racks of again using cries.
"We'll get you better, Five. Don't you worry." Dr. Brenner sighs. He turns the voltage up.
Gus's vision goes white and her eyes roll to the back of her head. Her body lays limp on the ground and her head hangs to the side.
The three boys shout for the two injured girls.
Dr. Brenner stands up and makes his way over to Eleven. He crouches down next to her and takes the girl in his arms, hoping to try and manipulate her like every time before. Just like what he did with Gus when she was younger.
"Bad...Bad..." Eleven repeats. "Mike, Mike..." she reaches a hand towards the boy.
The lights begin to flicker and Mike's eyes widen, the color draining from his face.
"Blood." Mike says.
"What?"
"Blood."
The wall in front of them slowly begins to crack. The forces it's way through.
"Demogorgon."
The guards release the kids and pull their guns out. They begin to shoot at the Demogorgon. Dustin picks up Eleven. Lucas and Mike quickly try their best to pick Gus up.
"Gus, wake up!" Mike shouts.
Gus groans quietly, blood dripping from her ears.
"You've got to run with us, Gus!" Lucas shouts.
Gus slowly opens her eyes. Her head felt like it was shaking. Everything around her looked distorted. She lifts her head, turns her head, and sees the Demogorgon behind them, being shot at. Even though the Demogorgon was being attacked, it rarely seemed fazed. And it's whole presence shifts to the brunette, causing fear to wash over her.
It was the kind of fear that made every inch of your skin crawl and wanted to make you scratch her eyeballs out. You wanted to collapse to the ground and sob with your hands over your head, begging that this was all just a nightmare.
Sadly, this nightmare was Gus' life.
The brunette needed to keep trudging forward. Gus didn't know how she did it, but she used what strength she had left to run with them.
"Good, that's good." Mike says.
They quickly enter a room in the science wing. Gus collapses in one of the desks.
God, she wishes she could go back to sleeping in class.
As soon as her eyes closes, the gunfire stopped. She shoots her head up.
"Is it...dead?"
Gus shakes her head with squinted eyes, "I don't--"
The Demogoron bursts into the room. Gus quickly gets out of the seat and stumbles back, with her breathing quick.
"Get the Wrist Rocket!" Mike shouts at Lucas.
Lucas started to shoot rocks at the Demogorgon. The Demogorgon stalks toward the brunette, causing an ice threaded needle to shoot down her spine; forcing her to freeze in her tracks. Gus inhales and holds her breath. The brunette froze. What was she supposed to do? That thing only had eyes for her. What was so special about Gus?
"Gus, get away from it!" Dustin shouts.
Gus snaps her eyes over to the screaming kids and she pulls her brows together. If the Demogorgon was only walking towards her, then it only wanted her. She stand next to the kids, it would just go after them too. Holy Shit, Gus would do anything for these fucking kids.
Gus looks back at the Demogorgon and her back straightens. The Demogorgon's face opens up and Gus' starts to feel light-headed seeing the inside of its mouth. All Gus could even think about were her regrets in life.
I didn't get to have an actual relationship with Hopper.
Didn't mend my friendship with Fallon.
I know if Sofía and Will survived.
And I never got to tell that dick, Steve Harrington, how I felt about him.
Before the Demogorgon could grab Gus, Lucas shoots one more rock at it and the Demogorgon slams into the chalkboard. Gus flinches and slaps a hand over her mouth.
The brunette sees a small figure enter her peripheral vision. "El? What are you doing?" Gus asks.
Eleven continues to walk forward and she passes Gus. The teen opens her mouth and takes a step forward, but an invisible force, yanks Gus back which sent her flying to where the boys were standing.
Eleven looks at all of them, but her eyes stop on the boy she grew fond of.
"Goodbye, Mike."
Eleven looks back at the Demogorgon, "No more."
She holds out her hand toward the Demogorgon. The creature starts to let out a high-pitched screech, causing Gus to cover her eyes. A white light fills the room and Gus slams her eyes shut.
Eleven was going to miss them all. Even though, she and Gus shared issues, in the end, she was going to miss her as well.
As soon as the light dies down, everyone slowly opens their eyes, and take their hands off of their ears.
Gus looks around the classroom, her mouth slightly open. "Eleven?" she croaks.
Gus forces herself back onto her feet, she looks around the classroom, then her eyes fall on the crack in the wall. Her eyes start to burn with tears, realizing what happened.
"No, no, no..." Gus wipes her mouth with the back of her shaky hand. "ELEVEN?!"
"El?! El?!"
They all shout her name. But she wasn't there.
Not anymore.
And Gus was left feeling guilty that she wasn't able to protect all of the kids.
