Harper paced around her office. She was stuck. She was well and truly stuck. Harper couldn't figure out this case at all. She felt like she was at a dead end. The evidence didn't seem to link up and she knew that it should but she just couldn't figure out the connection.
The detective had gone over the evidence what felt like a thousand times and she was growing sick of the sight of it but she owed it to Cassandra, Ian, their families and Harry and Dele to solve the case and put it to bed. Harper had never worked on a cold case and she was determined not to make this one the first.
Harper had met up with Harry a few times to try and get every piece of evidence out of him. The first few times were a fail in that regard. They had ended up in each other's beds once again but their latest meeting proved to be successful. It was just unfortunate that the information didn't help Harper crack the case.
It was now approaching midnight and Harper still hadn't left the office. She had been there since sunrise and Howard was growing worried. He had never seen Harper so stressed out before and he knew that the case was slowly eating at her. It wasn't healthy.
"Detective, you've been here for hours. Go home and get some rest." Howard sighed as he stood in the doorway and watched as Harper was up to her neck in files about each of the victims, the crime scene, the suspects and relationships between suspects and victims.
"Something isn't right, Howard. I can't figure it out." She sighed and slammed shut the case files, beginning to pack up the pieces of paper and folders. She knew that she had to go home. perhaps looking at the case with a fresh set of eyes and a good night's rest behind her will help.
"I'll go through the details with you once more and if you still can't figure it out, you're going to go home." Howard informed the smaller girl. Harper knew better than to argue with Howard. He was a tolerant man but him being Harper's superior meant that he could remove her from the case at any time and she really didn't need that. If Joward thought that she was becoming too consumed by the case, she would be put on another one.
"Cassandra Barker was killed. She was stabbed thirteen times and no murder weapon was found. She was found by Harry Winks but it was reported an hour and thirty minutes after she was originally found," Howard spoke and Harper listened carefully. She could feel her brain working, trying to process all of the information that she had been given. "Ian Jones was found murdered by poison thirteen days after Cassandra. The drug used is somewhat difficult to obtain and not anyone would have-" Howard continued but he was cut off by Harper.
"Thirteen!" She yelled out and Howard gave her a look of confusion. Why was she yelling out the unluckiest number? And what did it have to do with their case?
"The number thirteen is what links all of these cases together. Think about it!" The raven haired girl exclaimed in excitement, pleaded that she had finally managed to find the link between the two murders.
"Cassandra was stabbed thirteen times, Harry reported the case one hour and thirty minutes after he found her and look," Harper grabbed a piece of blank paper and a pen and wrote down 'one hour and thirty minutes' in number form.
"A one and a three. Thirteen. Not to mention that Ian was killed thirteen days after Cassandra." Harper looked up at her partner and he gave her a smile, impressed with her police work.
"Serial killers love a pattern and thirteen is their number." Harper smiled at Howard. They were one step closer to finding the bastard who was doing this and putting him behind bars for a very long time. Harper couldn't wait until that moment.
"You realise that the only person with a connection to the number thirteen so far is Harry, right?" Howard pointed out and Harper groaned. She was cursing the boy for waiting so long to report the body. Why did he have to do it exactly an hour and thirty minutes after he had found Cassandra? An hour and twenty or an hour and forty would have worked perfectly for him.
As Harper started to think more about the significance that the number thirteen had to the case, she had a sudden realisation and she didn't like it one bit.
"Howard, how many days has it been since we found Ian Jones?" Harper had stopped paving as she looked to the older man and saw a look of realisation appear on his face.
"Twelve days which means that they strike again tomorrow."
Everything has just gotten a whole lot scarier for the detectives. They were racing against time to try and protect whoever the next victim might be.
They had to devise a plan that they thought would work and keep the staff at Tottenham Hotspur safe. Howard's suggestion was to bring both Harry and Dele in overnight or have police officers stationed outside their houses. Howard's theory was that if they were guilty, a third person wouldn't turn up dead but Harper wasn't convinced. A third person would still turn up dead because as Harper had been saying ever since everything started happening, Harry and Dele were innocent.
"I guess we'll just have to see who's right, won't we?" Howard spoke to Harper before packing everything up.
The race was on.
