013 ⇵ your new boyfriend

( ⛅️ )

oh boy am i going to make sure
that boy treats her right.

beep. beep. beeeep!

mark grumbled as he slammed his palm on his desperately annoying alarm — he did not feel like going to school today.

it was already hard enough on mark breaking up with hyejin, but having to watch her with another guy right in front of his face like that? he really couldn't take it.

in what way was lucas better than him? in what way had lucas made hyejin leave and fall for him so easily? in what way had lucas taken away something that precious to him so quickly?

mark didn't understand.

all he knew was that he didn't like hyejin's new boyfriend, and that lucas wong in fact, was an asshole for stealing his girl.

finally rolling out of bed, mark trudged to the bathroom and began brushing his teeth.

while he brushed, his mind immediately began to argue with himself.

he was mark lee — what did he have to be afraid of? some other hella good looking guy? pssshh. that was nothing.

as if a switch had been turned on, mark's confidence kicked in and the spinning gears inside of him began turning with ease, cheering himself on.

he knew hyejin was already starting to become jealous, so what if lucas was with her now? he would win her back for sure.

miyong was doing such a good job of fooling people, sometimes mark himself forgot it wasn't real.

he smiled to himself as he knew he could trust in her to get the job done.

mark rinsed his mouth out before running a quick towel over his face. he then carelessly tousled his messy hair between his fingers, took one last look at himself in the mirror, before heading downstairs.

his parents had already gone to work, so when he arrived at the bottom of the staircase, he was met with a serene morning silence.

the silence was infused with the radiant sun beams pouring through the tinted glass windows, refracting tiny rainbows onto the kitchen counter.

mark smiled at the sight.

he loved rainbows, especially the tiny ones that peaked through the windows like these.

rainbows were such a significant symbol to him, something that meant the world to him.

it was how he and miyong had met in the first place.

on a rainy day ten years ago, the two children had both been caught outside in the misty seoul weather waiting for the hidden sun to seep through the clouds.

and specifically for the grand spectrum of colours to appear in the sky.

since he was born, mark had been told that rainbows represented a sign of hope, promise, and love. his mother had told him that to promise something under a rainbow meant that it would never be broken and last forever.

so when the two seven-year-old children bumped into each other at the neighborhood park while 'rainbow watching', they made a promise together.

that they would be the best of friends, forever, until the end of time. and that nothing would ever come in between them.

mark grinned at the memory once again.

rainbows meant so much to him and he was glad that he was reminded of why that morning.

he closed his eyes and hoped that is was a sign of good luck for his mission to win back hyejin.

mark grabbed a piece of toast from the plate on the counter, slipped on his dirty air-forces, and went out the door.

"miyong,"

"miyong?"

"miyong!"

miyong lazily rolled over in bed, muffling her face into her pillow and curling only deeper into her duvet cover.

she, just like mark, didn't want to go to school either.

the sound of quick footsteps arrived at the door to her room, causing her to open one eye slightly to look at the noisy culprit.

of course, it was none other than her older sister, park misun.

misun was the perfect child. she was smarter. she was kinder. she was more talented. she was prettier. she was all the things miyong told herself she would never be.

graduating valedictorian of her year, misun had moved on the study law in university. she was the definition of a flawless student — perfect scores, professor's favourite, and loved by everyone she worked with.

she was just as popular now as she was in her highschool days — prom queen, ulzzang, cheer captain.

though she had all sorts of people chasing after her, she had a healthy relationship with her long-term highschool boyfriend, johnny suh, who to miyong, was like the older brother she never had.

though her parents loved them both equally, miyong couldn't help but tell herself that she was the disappointment, that she was the failure.

she would never be as perfect as misun.

aside from it all, miyong and misun had a wonderful sisterly bond. though misun was four years older than her, this didn't stop the two from being close as ever.

the sibling's parents were never home because of work, which is why the two counted to each other for almost everything — resulting in their closeness.

"miyong? did you hear me? you slept past your third alarm already." misun frowned, seeing as miyong was still in bed and ignoring her.

she walked over to the bedside and grabbed her grumbling sister's arms, pulling her up to a sitting position, then sitting down on the bed beside her.

sighing, misun gave miyong a look. "okay, tell me what's up — why do you not want to go to school?"

miyong groaned and shrugged, hugging herself. "sunie, nothing's wrong. i just... don't want to go..."

"i'm not stupid park miyong, i'm your sister. i know when something's bothering you. now spill." misun replied rolling her eyes.

miyong bit the inside of her cheek. "it's just..."

"...boy problems?" misun asked nonchalantly.

"i— how did— well... sure i guess kinda... i mean— fine, yes." miyong sighed.

misun smirked in triumph giving the 'i told you so' look to miyong. "okay? so give me the details. who's the guy, and what 'stage' are we at?" she asked, adding air quotes.

miyong ears slowly began to turn red as she slowly opened her mouth to speak. "well i'm kinda dating him now..."

misun's eyes widened. she knew her sister had never dated anyone before, and she knew miyong would usually never let her guard down this easily.

"who... who is it?"

"it's... you know... uhm... mark." she answered almost inaudibly.

"mark?! as in mark lee?" misun asked in shock, her mouth hanging open.

"yeah... he... he asked me out around two weeks ago."

"and you said yes?"

"i did, but i didn't—"

"mi," misun said gently cutting her off, "i know mark is your best friend and all — and i truly do adore him — but isn't he a huge playboy?"

"suni—"

"miyong," misun softly continued, "i don't want you to get hurt. you're my baby sister, and you've never dated anyone before. a heartbreak like this will ruin you, and the friendship you have with him... trust me i've been there and i don't want you to go through what i had to."

"sunie, its okay, he treats me well." miyong smiled at her sister.

"mi, please think this through alright? i've heard stories about him. and not good ones. your new boyfriend, well... he can be an asshole. i know he's a good friend to you, but dating is something completely different... are you sure you're ready?"

"well... we're here already so it's too late to back out now, isn't it?" miyong joked and playfully pushed her sister aside.

"fine, well get ready quickly because there's only 5 minutes before he normally gets here anyways." misun patted miyong head before getting off the bed and out the door.

"oh boy am i going to make sure that boy treats her right... how'd i not notice this before?..." misun's whispers to herself could be heard as she left the room.

miyong knew she should've told misun that her relationship with mark wasn't real, but she couldn't bring herself to it.

all misun would do is give her a look of disappointment, which miyong did not want to face. she had enough of that in her life from others already.

she quickly got ready in a record speed of time, and headed downstairs just to hear the doorbell ring and misun rush to get it before she could.

miyong shrugged and grabbed her bag before walking to the door where her sister and 'boyfriend', were having a so-called brief conversation.

actually, it looked more like a kid in trouble being parented by his strict mother.

"hey, everything okay...?" miyong asked squeezing past misun out the door to where mark was.

"yeah..." misun said eying mark down, "everything is great... right mark?" misun smiled widely, blinking slowly, one, twice, then a third time.

"uh yeah—"

"okayyy... we'll be going now! bye sunie." miyong laughed at mark's nervous state and pulled him away from the door.

once the two were far enough away, mark finally exhaled and shook his head. "dude i never want to experience that again."

he pursed his lips together before tilting his head towards the girl. "first of all what happened? second of all why did she look at me like that? and third of all when did she get so scary?" mark exclaimed in confusion.

miyong laughed and turned her head away from her best friend.

"better treat me well then mark lee, or the wrath of misun will come and find you..." miyong replied spookily, laughing at how mark's face had paled.

"hey don't laugh, i was actually scared!"

"grow some balls, dumbass."

"shut up mi, no one asked."

"you literally just did."

"did not!"
