33. Fear

The sun was on the horizon meeting night, saying its last goodbye as it went down in the sky. Maeve and Elijah had spent a lovely day with the three royal covens. Maeve learnt more about the royal covens and their traditions as well as what can kill them. Gwenlyn and the man who conversed with Esther, namely Patrick informed Esther's agenda as well as what to expect from a witch like her.

The two bid their farewells to the covens. Gwenlyn, Maverick and Patrick insisted on dropping them off to their car, still parked outside the forest.

"Thank you for everything." Elijah said shaking hands with Gwenlyn and Patrick.

"It was our pleasure, Elijah. Unlike, other witches we have nothing against vampires. You're more than welcome here." Gwenlyn offered him a smile.

"I don't understand, one thing." began Maeve biting her lower lip before she continued to talk, "I am a Lycanthrope. A hybrid... An abomination. How are you so accepting?"

"It doesn't make you any less of Queen to us. We knew who you were since the time we knew about your existence. For us you're an Anomaly. One who was never supposed to exist but does and that too with nature's permission." Maverick explained with a smile.

Gwenlyn brought Maeve to a corner and in a gentle tone said, "are you certain staying here isn't an option? Given wh──"

"I accepted a while ago my fate, Gwenlyn. There is nothing you and I can do about it. As much as I would have loved to stay, he and his family need me to be there for them." All of them nodded reluctantly.

"We just became a complete family." Patrick began but Maeve smiled warmly making him trail off his words,

"It was written in the stars. A prophecy cannot be overturned."

"It's been a pleasure to meet you." Patrick shook her hand one last time before she got into the car.

"Are you alright?" asked Elijah when he noticed that Maeve was in a haze. Maeve played with the ring she was gifted that rested on her finger.

"Yeah...its just the day has been quite eventful and sorry, I know it was the last thing you wanted to do today."

Elijah hummed and rolled his eyes, "I learnt on what my mother plans, I don't think it was all that bad."

"Looks like we are going back to Mystic Falls then."

"Seems we are." Elijah nodded along, "what did you mean...prophecy?"

"Nothing for you to worry about. Don't worry." Maeve replied suspiciously fast.

"Maeve something you would like to add?" Elijah asked, his voice a little stark and interrogative.

"No." he had no choice but to close the topic there.

Night fell over the following day when Elijah and Maeve came back to Mystic Falls. Maeve forced Elijah to stop by Mystic Grill to get dinner.

"Why don't you go? I'll walk back."

"It's late, Maeve. I'll wait here." Maeve rolled her eyes,

"I can cut throats, Elijah. Don't worry." He sighed in defeat.

"Fine. Get back soon. I'll be at your place." He drove away. Maeve made her way inside the grill and placed her order.

"Can I have five cheese bacon burgers. Three large fries; two with cheese and one with cheese and salsa to go, please?" The waiter jotted down her order and went to get it prepared.

After collecting the take away, Maeve made her way out. She began walking down the footpath. Maeve stopped in her steps hearing shouts coming from the steps that led to the back entrance to the Grill.

Maeve followed the voice and reached the back of the grill. She saw a red head straddling Stefan at the top of the stairs. Knowing the scooby gang was up to something she ran up to them. She looked down to see Elena with a crossbow who shot Finn disarming him. The woman ran down the stairs to be next to him. But before she could do anything Matt ran out the door and stabbed him with a stake. The woman let out a piercing scream. Grey veins covered Finn's body and he lit up into fire. Maeve realised it was a white oak stake. Maeve dropped the bag of food on the sidewalk. She grabbed Stefan by his collar. Her eyes were red with a glassy look. A low throaty growl emitted at the base of her throat directed at Stefan,

"What the hell did you do?" Stefan, for a moment felt fear before he masked it entirely now that his actions had led to something he wanted for a while.

"What should have been done." he replied shoving Maeve off of him. Maeve stood her ground, her vision blurred as a single tear rolled down her cheek.

Maeve didn't have much control over her actions. Panic, fear, anger were the only emotions she was feeling. She took out her phone and dialled Elijah's number.

One Ring. Two rings. Three rings. Elijah didn't pick up the phone. It only fuelled in her fear.

Please don't be dead. Please. No. You cannot die Maeve chanted in her head. She didn't care about the food. Maeve ran as fast as she could clutching her phone in her tight grip. Her mind and brain were drowning in thoughts she prayed didn't come true.

Maeve ran on autopilot, over to the mansion. Maeve dashed inside the mansion bursting open the front door. With widened eyes and shaky legs she ran inside through the many hallways trying to find Elijah or Klaus or Rebekah.

"Elijah! Nik! Beks!" She screamed entering one of the many rooms. Maeve entered one particular room. She drew a puzzled look seeing Damon strung up with animal traps digging into the skin around his wrists. When she didn't find them there, Maeve ignored Damon and stormed out of the room and climbed the stairs. Eyes scanned every corner of the hall and rooms to find some trace of them.

"Elijah! Beks!" she kept screaming as fear consumed her entirely.

"Mae?" she whipped her head around to see Rebekah walk into the hallway from a parallel room. Maeve let out a relieved audible sigh. She crumpled in the relief she felt and dropped to her knees immediately. Maeve held her face in her palm hiding the tears that still streamed down her face.

"What's going on?" it was Klaus who asked the question walking up the stairs having heard the screaming call of Maeve.

Maeve didn't respond verbally. She got up to her feet and walked forward to Klaus. She wrapped her arms around him resting her chin on his shoulder.

"You're alive. You're alive. I'm so glad you're okay." she kept repeating like a broken record. Klaus looked over at Rebekah confusion even on her face.

Klaus patted her back when he felt her tremble lightly. "Maeve, I'm fine. We are all okay."

She pulled away with a sniffle. "How is this possible? I thought you were still linked?"

"We found Finn. Bonnie performed the spell. We are not linked anymore." Klaus revealed to her. "Maeve what happened? Why were you screaming?"

Maeve's phone rang loudly on the floor where she dropped it in haste. ‘Elijah’ flashed on the screen.

She gritted her teeth and answered the call. "ELIJAH MIKAELSON WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE A PHONE IF YOU DON'T PICK IT UP! WHEN THIS DEVICE THAT YOU ARE HOLDING, RINGS LIKE A BELL YOU PRESS THE GREEN BUTTON AND ANSWER IT!" she scolded the original at the top of her lungs.

"Maeve? Are you okay? Where are you?"

"Jus──" she took in a breath, "get to the mansion, please." She ended the call. Maeve used the back of her hand to wipe away her stray tears.

"Maeve? What happened?" this time Rebekah asked her.

Maeve turned around to look at both, mournful look glassing her previously panicked face. "Somehow...I don't know how, they found white oak. Finn is dead."

A deadly silence spread across the mansion consuming the Mikaelson siblings into a whirlpool of emotions.

The discussion shifted into the study room, closest to where they stood in the hallway. Maeve helped herself to a glass of bourbon and downed it in a single gulp.

Elijah arrived moments later taking in the devastating news. He sat down beside Maeve on the couch. No one spoke for a while reflecting on the news and what to do next.

"Klaus! I'm here. Let's do this." everyone's attention shifted from the death of Finn Mikaelson to the younger Salvatore who called for the original hybrid.

All four walked out of the study and the floor below, knowing all too well where Stefan's feet would have carried him.

Klaus entered the room first with his arms wound around his back, "oh good a hero."

This time around, Maeve took in the sight of Damon. His tired face, dropping eyes and blood that decorated his body and the sheet spread below his feet.

"How much did you exactly torture him and why?"

"He used me to get information." Rebekah simply stated. Maeve saw the angered look, understanding the meaning behind that particular one. She clasped her hand in hers in reassurance.

"I'm here to make a deal." said Stefan dropping a duffle bag on the floor. Maeve scoffed listening to him.

"Stefan, what are you doing?" Damon groaned.

"Eight stakes of White Oak. A part of Wickery Bridge you forgot to burn." Stefan added on ignoring his brother.

"You killed my brother." Rebekah growled.

"Damon in exchange for the last eight weapons that can kill you." Stefan demanded walking closer to Klaus.

"How do we know there aren't any more left?" Maeve asked stepping forward to be right next to Klaus, her eyes never leaving Stefan.

"Because there aren't."

Klaus looked at Maeve and back to Stefan, "let's confirm shall we?"

He walked past Stefan, over to Damon, "leave" he compelled.

"No" Damon moaned still struggling to stay conscious.

"Go on. Leave

"Nik he's my play thing. Not yours" Rebekah whined to her older brother.

"Come on, Nik. Don't take away your sister's fun." added Maeve taking Rebekah's side. Having enough of Maeve's provocation, Elijah grabbed her by her elbow and forced her to take a step back,

"Let him handle this." Elijah whispered in her ear.

Maeve threw a glare at Elijah but surrendered nonetheless. Klaus grabbed Damon by his throat and compelled him again, "I said, go home"

Damon began to pull his hand out of the bear cages. The claws buried in his hand pierced his skin drawing more blood. He grunted in pain.

"Alright, stop. Stop. Stop, before you hurt yourself." Klaus told him, "Well, I see he can finally be compelled. Now... Minus the stake that is in my brother how many stakes are out there that can kill me?" Klaus compelled Damon.

"Eleven." Damon answered in a monotone-like voice.

"You and your band of misfit teenagers seem to not quite comprehend the meaning of not going against us. Even after so long you still believe that you can stand against us and survive." said Elijah with a reproachful look.

"I'll get you the other three." Stefan promised looking from Elijah to Klaus.

"Yeah, that'd be nice. Or since you lied I'll just compel your brother to chew off his tongue."

"What is wrong with you?" Stefan asked dumbly believing he could provoke an answer from Klaus about the torture done to his brother.

"What is wrong with you? Do you have no appreciation for me? I have given you someone to hate. To loathe. A target for all of your anger so you don't have to turn it on yourself. I've given your life purpose, as your friend. I mean, I really think you should be thanking me." Klaus laughed.

"Enough" Stefan growled and used his speed to push Klaus against the wall behind. He aimed a white oak stake at his heart.

Maeve glanced at Elijah who gave her a half shrug, having lost much of his patience anyway with the Salvatore brothers. She snapped her fingers and Stefan found himself on the wall instead, a few feet in the air. She lifted up her arm, her hand open. He kept gasping in pain, as the sound of bone being crushed echoed in the room.

"I suggest you stand the fuck down Salvawhores. You killed Finn and you have the audacity to think you can stand up to us?" She approached Stefan dropping the spell on him.

"Let me say what Nik would say if I give him a chance." She began throwing a quick look over her shoulder and back at Stefan. "Bring the rest of the white oak and live your lousy life. Fail to do so and I might feel obligated to do to you what I did to Damon. Clear? Oh and remember this time──forget about me healing you." She turned around to face the Mikaelson siblings, a malicious smile spread across her face,

"How did I do?"

"Scarily good." Rebekah praised. Elijah and Klaus nodded their heads agreeing with her.

Maeve made her way around the house trying to find Elijah. After a grief stricken conversation she overheard between Rebekah and Klaus, Maeve wanted to make sure Elijah was alright.

She knocked softly on the door to a room, she could only assume it was Elijah's. "Elijah?"

"Come in, Maeve." his voice came from within. Maeve opened the door and naively stepped inside the room.

Maeve noticed him sitting on an arm chair in the room. "Are you okay?" she asked him.

"I'm fine." he replied instantly. Elijah raised his head up, gazing at her. Maeve saw right through it.

"I got so scared when I saw Finn die." she began, "I dropped the bag of food there and ran here instantly. I forgot you were at my place." He didn't respond. "How are you feeling?"

"I──I'm not sure." Elijah told her. He chose to distract his thoughts. "Yesterday when we left the Woodlands, I heard Gwenlyn and you talk about a prophecy. What was that about?"

Maeve licked her lips looking away from him. Elijah stood up and made his way in two steps in front of her. "What is it that you have accepted? Why did you choose my family over whatever it is that is happening to you?" Elijah waited for Maeve to give him an answer.

"Maeve. I want an answer." Elijah enunciated strongly.

"Nothing much important, Elijah. There's just this Prophecy that Gwenlyn saw and told me." said Maeve turning away from Elijah, avoiding his gaze. "Look, why don't you focus on mourning your brother? You just lost him because of the stupidity of fuckers!"

Maeve wanted to tell him everything. All of what Gwenlyn told her. But she didn't want that. Elijah Mikaelson lost his brother that evening and she didn't want to burden him with her problems.

"What does the Prophecy say?" he asked again.

"Elijah let it go. It's no──" Maeve cut herself off when Elijah physically turned her by her shoulder so she faced him.

"Maeve. I am asking you again. What is the Prophecy about?" Maeve stayed silent for a moment, her mind drifting back to the conversation she had with Gwenlyn the eldest Vlatka.

Inside the shrine for mediation in the Woodlands, Gwenlyn spoke with Maeve freely. "The time shall arrive when the darkness within that remains hidden, shall consume the gentle humane as a whole. When that shall come, that shall be the moment of her last breath."

Gwenlyn repeated it by heart to Maeve. "Maeve, this Prophecy was made by my mother, Evanora months before she passed away. She made it two years ago."

"When the concealment spell on me was lifted." Maeve evidently stated. Gwenlyn nodded her head along. "The Prophecy speaks of a dark energy. Darkness that would kill me."

"I'm afraid so. We just got you. With your death..." Maeve slumped her shoulders. She hated that soon she would see her death. It wasn't like it had not come for her before but this was different. This time no one could save her.

"The rest of you live on. Shall live on for generations. It doesn't matter if I do not live on." Maeve reassured the Vlatka. "Death came for me the day I was born but I survived. Perhaps, nature always had other plans for me."

Maeve Kalon had easily and quickly accepted her fate. "The only worry I have is how am I supposed to tell it to my aunt and brother...the pack actually. As well as the original family. They all have done so much for me."

She didn't want to die because she knew that her death would open old wounds possible. Though the pack members didn't show it, every single person harboured a bit of fear in their hearts about the lives of their loved ones. Considering Maeve was their Alpha it was in their nature to protect her.

Given the threat to Maeve they would prepare themselves for anything to protect her, even though they might lose their life in the process. They couldn't reject her because of just how kind hearted she had been and how remorseful she felt for their loss.

She also thought of the Original family; The Mikaelsons, who, in a short period of time had become so close to her. Practically her pack. How could she tell them about the threat? Maeve knew they would leap for her help as soon as they would have heard of the Prophecy.

Maeve didn't want them to bear the weight of her fated cross.

"What would it do if you knew? We cannot change it. Nothing can be done about it. So please mourn your brother and leave me be. I have troubled you all enough." she snapped at him angrily. Maeve chose to storm out just so Elijah would go back to reflecting on the events that happened mere an hour ago.
