17. Hybrids

Maeve looked from the bar in front of her to Klaus who stood next to her, a disgusted look slowly creeping on her face. "This place is where you think your werewolf pal is gonna be in?" asked Maeve again but this time with a strong scowling tone.

"Yes he is. Now go in and see if that man...right there is our guy."

Maeve deflated a sigh seeing what Klaus wanted her to do. "You want me to use my magic or this alpha power?"

"Neither." revealed Klaus shocking even himself. "I want you to go in there and sit next to him. That's all."

"And he'll give me his name? So you're saying he's a creep."

"He's a man. He'll give you his security number just to get your name." Klaus sneered making Maeve snort a laugh.

"You know your humor is absolutely against your reputation." she gazed back at the door to the pub, "is Stefan compelling?"

"Yes."

Maeve took a second look at the door and back to Klaus before whispering, "if he tries anything, I hope you wouldn't mind if he's dickless." Klaus chuckled turning his head away from Maeve at her comment.

"Keep him alive, that's all I ask." Maeve clicked her tongue giving him a finger gun before she strode away. Her short red dress ended mid thigh and the low cut accentuated her curves. With a dramatic flip of her hair over her shoulder Maeve pushed the door open. Maeve made her way to the bar table and sat down adjusting her dress.

"Excuse me, can I have a beer?" she asked the bartender who nodded. Maeve waited patiently and before long she felt a man settle on the stool next to hers.

"Hey red, get me a beer." he ordered before he moved to face Maeve. She felt his unblinking stare on her that made her uncomfortable.

"What's a pretty little thing doing here?" he asked Maeve. She turned her head slightly looking at him with a flash of a smile.

"I am on a mission." she told him with an accent. A snarky laughter echoed inside her head.

"British. New in town?"

"Call me a tourist." she told him. His eyes lingered on her lips seconds longer before he averted his gaze back up.

"Ray. Ray Sutton." he introduced himself. Maeve smiled knowingly but didn't let it show.

"Oh so you're the infamous Ray Sutton I've been looking for. Pleasure." Maeve looked at the glass door and nodded her head slightly.

The door chimed open at once and Maeve turned to her beer immediately. "Ray. Ray Sutton?" Klaus asked walking over to them.

"Who wants to know?"

"Ray Sutton? We have been looking for you. Started in Florida, Pennescola, I met a young chap there who you worked there with before you moved to Memphis. Now, he directed me to two lovely young women and they led me here"

"Look, I better get going."

"Not so fast mate. You only just got here. Now, your type are very hard to come by." He turned to run away only to be stopped by Stefan.

"I wouldn't do that." He warned.

"Vampires." He breathed.

"You're swifty swift Ray. My friend here is a vampire. He has compelled everyone in the bar so don't look at them for help. I, however am something different. A different kind of monster. I have a bit of a wolf as well."

"You're a what?"

"Oh your poor child. Haven't got any brains, have you? A vampire with a bit of a wolf. What does that mean?"

"See, I want to create more of me. Now, you being the first werewolf I have come across in many a moon, pun intended. I want you to direct me to your pack." Klaus explained.

"You can't compel me, it won't work." Ray said alarmed.

"Well, then. We can find other ways to get the information." Klaus sneered.

"Can I get a scotch." Stefan asked the bartender before he turned to Ray, "Tell you what, Ray. Let's play a game. Wolfsbane or truth."

Maeve chugged down her beer and turned to Klaus. She poked at his shoulder getting his attention.

"Can I go change? This dress is too small." Klaus nodded. Maeve stepped off the stool and exited the place. Maeve came back soon after fixing her Chewbacca shirt suddenly feeling revolted when her eyes landed on the scene playing out in the corner of the pub. Stefan stood tall over a tired looking strapped and tortured Ray Sutton. She gasped in shock seeing him bleed and Stefan holding another dart in hand. Maeve roved around the room, her unnerved eyes settling on the compelled customers enjoying their meals. She finally looked at Klaus who sat calmly sipping on his scotch.

"Is this necessary?" she asked him making her way to the original hybrid.

Klaus gulped down and finished his drink. He glanced her way for a second before returning to look at Ray and Stefan, "I thought you were a fan of violence." Klaus denoted with a sly grin, "I remember your face when Stefan was drinking from those blood bags."

She felt ashamed of herself. A part of hers did infact enjoy the brutality of torture. The blood and Gore that came along with it fascinated her, intrigued her...and most of all, hypnotized her.

"It isn't like that. I am not that big of a fan of violence." Maeve rolled her eyes, "I am just wondering if there were any other means you could have to get the information you need."

"None." Maeve nodded her head and took a seat next to Klaus but turned away from the scene. Klaus shifted in his seat and placed his arms flat on the bar table.

"British accent?" Maeve spat a bit of the beer she took a sip of, hearing his amused voice.

"I thought I'd give it a try." she defended herself.

Klaus smiled nodding his head, "it was a terrible one."

"I think it exceeds expectations. Not as good as yours but it faired." Maeve shrugged her shoulders.

"No." Maeve pouted as Klaus straightaway rejected her. "Now, answers. Your commercial break lasted quite enough."

Maeve cleared her throat and turned to face him on the stool. "Ask away. One question."

"Witch lineage." Maeve cracked a smile impressed with his choice of words. Maeve looked over his shoulder at Stefan who was still trying to get information out of Ray. She leaned closer to Klaus and in barely a whisper told him,

"Older than you." shock marred on Klaus's features making him furrow his brows. Much of witchcraft dated back to before him but hardly any survived the time. Now here she was claiming to be the latest of an old bloodline.

"Impossible." Maeve hummed in response,

"Isn't that what I said that night in the motel? Impossible is what I am."

Before their conversation could continue on, the door to the pub opened again. A woman approached Klaus and Maeve.

"Mr Klaus. I have information for you. A friend saw this guy Damon near the farm house." she told him.

"Thank you Claudine. You tell your friends to keep up with the good work."

"My brother's still on our trail?" Stefan asked walking upto them. Maeve noticed a change in Stefan. Either he was worried about something or nervous if Klaus takes a wrong step.

"Yes. I'm gonna have to do something about it." Klaus was aggravated. Even Maeve's brother had tried sneaking up on her whereabouts. She did in fact send him off using not-so-polite words. Not that she feared what Klaus might do but she sought to not have a wolf fight knowing both have equally big egos.

"No. Let me handle him." Stefan urged Klaus.

"What will guarantee me that you'll come back?" Klaus asked.

"You saved my brothers life. I am at your service." Stefan answered.

"That sounds tedious. Aren't you at least having fun a bit?" Klaus asked smugly.

"I'll make sure my brother stops following us." Stefan reassured and started to walk away. Maeve called him and marched upto him,

"Tell me to take care of himself, okay? That I and you are okay."

"You want me to tell him about you? Tell him how you've been getting comfortable with him? How his best friend has suddenly found a new one?" Stefan scoffed at her before storming away leaving Maeve dumbfounded.

Klaus, who had secretly grown fond of Maeve's company, watched an odd expression settle on her face. She numble walked back to the table and sat in her seat again. Her head whirled in Chaos bringing her to a tipping edge.

"I..." she began but trailed off only to start talking again, "I saved Bonnie for Elena that night from you, I got slapped in the face. I strike a deal to save them from you because I care and I get told off. I try to say it's okay and I get told off. I can't even do anything without being judged." she thought out loud.

"Stefan slapped you?" Klaus asked astounded and furious looking straight at her.

"Not him. Elena. She slapped me because she thought that because I hated her, I'd let her best friend die. I struck that deal, bargain...whatever to protect Damon and my friends in the first place and Stefan yelled at me in the warehouse. Why? Because I could have protected Elena but I didn't."

"Well you could have tried but you wouldn't have succeeded."

"I tried saying that but it didn't matter. What mattered was that I didn't fight."

"Why are you friends with them if all they cause you is pain? I noticed how easy it was for Damon to get you to do his bidding."

Maeve scoffed shaking her head, "oh so your going to lecture me about using people? You...the man who is the epitome of bad, touring America wanting to make a hybrid army." Klaus growled at her words.

"Yes. Why would I know of abuse, manipulation and pain?" Maeve softened at his words that emitted bottled up emotions. She opened her mouth to speak but Klaus silenced whatever words she wanted to say,

"Forget it. I tried to offer you words as a friend. It's clear that I am nothing but a kidnapper. Fine." hastily Klaus stood up and made his way to Ray. Maeve sat glued to her seat unable to think straight. Minutes passed before she made her way back to Klaus who had a blank stare set deadly upon Klaus.

"I'm sorry." she blurted out to him. "I shouldn't have taken out my inner──demonic debate out on you."

Klaus sympathised with her. He glanced her way maintaining a strong sense of caution, "Take a corner and sit tight. I have work to finish." he told her coldly.

Maeve felt guilty at lashing out on Klaus. He didn't deserve her anger. He was almost like Elijah. Both had the right sense of telling her the truth. The truth no one would have told her before.

Dawn arose quicker than any other day. Maeve walked out of her room in the roadside motel wearing her changed clothes, to find Klaus standing by the car. "Maeve."

"Morning Klaus." she offered him a smile. Maeve shoved her bag through the open window of the backseat. "I really am sorry about yesterday."

"Forget it."

Silence came over them as they waited for Stefan. "Why'd you say that? About why I am friends with them?" she raised her eyebrow amusingly, "don't tell me──you're catching feelings for me."

Klaus laughed audibly, "I can assure you I am not." He paused before he began shocking both, himself and her. "We are friends, right?"

"Yeah. Friends."

Stefan arrived soon incredibly suspicious of the two who stood side by side without saying a word. The trio drove to the address Ray gave them of the pack.

"Are you okay? Is he getting heavy?" Klaus asked hiking up ahead of Stefan who carried a still dead Ray on his shoulder. Maeve was skipping ahead of them, munching on a chocolate bar.

"I am okay." Stefan replied incredulously.

"We could take a stop. Maybe have some water." Klaus suggested.

"Uh, I get it we are stuck here with you. Maybe we could skip the chit chat" Stefan retorted.

"So much brooding. You're self loathing is suffocating you my friend." Maeve even though didn't look back at the two was completely focused on what they said. At Klaus's comment about Stefan, she flicked a wrist and the breeze picked up. It blew in on the hybrid's face, a few leaves and some dust.

"Maeve." He snapped rubbing his face in an attempt to get rid of the leaves.

She turned around to look at him. She smiled and gave an innocent look, "oops." Klaus kept walking glaring at her. She stared back with a mischievous grin.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?" He retorted.

"Very much." She replied poking her tongue out. Stefan laughed at her childish acts.

After a while of just walking, "Finally." Maeve mumbled seeing the pack camping at a near distance.

A woman among them was the first to notice the three walking towards them. "Ray." She screamed as Stefan dropped him on the ground. "Oh my god what happened? Who are you?"

"It doesn't matter who they are. What matters is who I am. My name is Klaus." He introduced himself.

"You're the Hybrid." She concluded.

"You've heard of me. Fantastic." He prided. Maeve took a seat at a stone near soothing her legs. She was the one for exercise but given the recent turn of events that was out the window.

"It's fascinating, really. A vampire who doesn't burn in the sun and a werewolf who isn't bound to the full moon." Klaus explained sitting next to Maeve on the stone. Stefan sat on the other side of Maeve with a hand around her shoulder. His actions comfused Maeve. She gave him a side glare silently asking for answers. Stefan simply ignored her and kept his eyes straining on the pack that circled them with their eyes burning on Klaus.

Ray woke up just then, with a gasp disoriented for a second not knowing where he was. "Perfect timing Ray. Very dramatic." Klaus cheered mockingly.

"What is happening to me?" Ray cried out in confusion.

"Stefan." Klaus noted.

"Are any of you human?" He asked raising his voice. Stefan looked at a man who seemed human, "You." Stefan grabbed him and bit into his neck.

"What about her?" asked another woman, rudely pointing at Maeve. "She's a wolf isn't she?"

Maeve stood up straight looking straight at her. Her eyes turned a blood red as she crossed her arms and looked right at the woman. "Get near me. I dare you." Klaus immediately speeded to her and fed her his blood before he snapped her neck. Maeve just stared at Klaus continued doing the same thing to every werewolf present around.

"There. Now, we wait." Klaus stopped next to Maeve who hadn't moved from her place.

"So this is your master plan? Build an army of hybrid slaves." Stefan remarked.

"Not slaves. Soldiers, comrades." Klaus corrected him.

"For what? War?" Maeve asked.

"You build an army so big that no one dares pick a fight." He added. Maeve nodded agreeing. As a newly turned werewolf she learnt about Pack and it's importance. First thing she learnt was that the bigger and stronger the pack is, less likely it would get ambushed by another.

"What makes you think they'll be loyal to you?"

"Loyalty is hard to come by, but easily granted if there's a return deal of assured winning." Maeve muttered. Both of them looked at her knowing what she said was true.

"Correct, love. The way you speak, your philosophies, that it reminds me of Elijah. You sure, he hasn't had an impact on you?" Klaus jeered giving his infamous smirk.

"He has actually. He's by far been a better receiver of my identity than anyone else." she bitterly commented giving a side glance to Stefan. He felt guilty of his own words, his actions. He had let his insecurity of being caught get the better of him.

Maeve looked at Ray who still looked unnerved. What alerted her even more was his bleeding eyes. "Uh...Klaus? Is that supposed to happen?"

Klaus turned to look at where she pointed. He approached Ray examining his eyes more closely. "That's not supposed to happen, right?" Stefan asked taking a closer look at him.

"Obviously." Klaus snapped.

"Some master race." Stefan remarked.

"Lose the attitude." He raged.

"Why am I not feeling well?" Ray screamed lunging ahead. Stefan tried controlling him but Ray ran away.

"Get him." Klaus instructed Stefan who speeded away. Maeve looked around to see every werewolf slowly waking up. Klaus compelled the human boy to feed everyone his blood.

Stefan speeded to them again but this time looking dishevelled and in pain. Maeve glanced at his hand cradled in the other. "Shit!" she cursed seeing the werewolf bite.

"Ouch, a fatal werewolf bite." Klaus denoted.

"Yeah, I'll need your blood." Stefan said walking ahead.

"Get me Ray and I'll give you my blood." Klaus confirmed.

"Klaus don't you dare." Maeve warned.

"It doesn't look good. I'd say hurry." Stefan speeded away. Maeve growled lowly in anger.

All the hybrids got up and started to move towards Maeve and Klaus.

"Bloody hell" Klaus sweared looking at them.

"Got any plans, Klaus?" Maeve asked preparing to rip through anyone who tried something.

"No. Just snap their necks if they attack." A girl lunged at Klaus whom he easily dodged, "careful, love there's only one Alpha here."

Maeve showed her claws and bared her canines, "and that's me." she announced, her eyes turning red yet again.

"Come on you puppies. Let's dance." Maeve muttered. Two jumped on her tackling her to the ground. "Motus" she chanted and the two flew back to the trees. Klaus was ripping the hearts of two others while the rest were walking to them ready to attack.

Maeve turned and went behind a tree and changed into a wolf. She came back and tackled the hybrids, one by one. Klaus looked at Maeve's wolf form. He stared at the black tall wolf with blood red eyes howling in the night, ripping through the hybrids. Once all were dead, the wolf cantered behind the trees to change back. Maeve reappeared through the shadows coated in blood from tearing into the hybrids.

Maeve took notice of the scene of death in front of her. "I'm sorry about this, Klaus." she softly said glancing his way.

Stefan reappeared from the tree line holding a now dead Ray. "He went rabid. I had to take him out." Stefan explained holding his hand where Ray bit him earlier.

"I did everything I was told." Klaus screamed throwing a glass of beer on the ground, "I should be able to turn them. I broke the curse. I killed a werewolf. I killed a vampire. I killed the Doppelganger."

"We'll find a solution, Klaus. We'll find what went wrong." Maeve assured Klaus.

Klaus looked at Maeve. He thought for a moment she wasn't being truthful or it was a way to get to him. But seeing her genuine reaction he nodded. Turning to look at Stefan he noted his pale look, "You look like hell."

"Last I checked I was dying and you weren't going to give me your blood." Stefan disclosed.

Klaus bit into his wrist and dropped his blood into a glass and handed it to him. "Bottoms up. Seems you two are the only two comrades, I have left."

As they reached a nearby hotel, Stefan immediately went to his room after checking in. Maeve remained in Klaus's company in the lobby and as they took the elevator to the third floor. "We'll find a solution to this. I promise." she tried reassuring him again.

"Why do you care? I killed aunt Jenna, I forced you and Stefan to come with me on this bloody trip in exchange for a vial of my blood. Why do you care after all this?" Klaus yelled, his voice echoing heavily in the small elevator.

The door dinged open making Maeve flinch slightly. "My room." she told him in a low voice. He followed her inside without any protest.

"I care because I like this trip. You're not half as bad as I thought you would be. I can be friends with who I want and I don't need any specific reason other than I want to be friends with you." She immediately started staring directly at the original Hybrid, "you, on the other hand, should tell me why you haven't yet told me to use my magic. I could have done it ages ago and saved the bloody round the clock trip."

"I could have forced you to do it. But I thought you might as well enjoy some freedom. In Mystic Falls you did everything that the gang told you to do. I figured you'd like to do what you wanted to do for once." Maeve was stunned at the kindness that Klaus showed her through his words alone and the actions throughout summer.

"I know what it feels like, you know?" Maeve began instead of responding to him. "I know how it feels to feel out of place. Wanting someone who would understand us."

"Is that what you think I feel?" Klaus asked her, his voice still raised.

"Yes." shouted Maeve. She sucked in a strong breath, "Elijah told me your story. Result of an affair. Werewolf turned in to vampire." her voice grew softer. Klaus slowly let his guards down hearing her, "If there is anyone who can understand what it feels like to be lost it's me."

A few minutes passed before Maeve spoke again, "I know we shook hands on a bargain but I──a part of me..." she composed herself. "a part of me didn't want to sabotage the ritual."

"Why?"

"A wolf is who you truly are. Vampire was what magic made you into. Being trapped being someone you know you are not is a punishment worse than life imprisonment."

"I'll let you rest now." Klaus told her and walked over to the door of the room. He twisted the knob open and put a foot out the threshold but turned back again, "Maeve?"

"Yeah?"

"Thank you for reassurance."

"Thank you for not forcing me to do anything."
