- chapter fourteen
— BROOKE SWAN had been declared missing, after a day of no contact, Charlie immediately had everyone in Forks and La Push searching for his daughter. Missing persons posters with her face on them had been taped all around town.
Meanwhile, the girl was still unconscious. After her call to Rosalie, the vampire had been worried. Emmett and Jasper had volunteered to go look for the girl, and when they found her...she looked so broken.
The sight of an unconscious Brooke had made everyone still, the fresh wound on her wrist giving a clear indication as to what happened. Brooke had been unconscious for a full day, giving no signs that she'd wake anytime soon.
As she came to, she noticed that she wasn't at home. Esme had been nearby, letting out a small gasp at the sight of the girl. "Brooke." She walked over and gently helped the girl sit up from her place on the couch.
She blinked, her eyes adjusting to the light. "Esme? W—What happened?"
"You were bitten." Brooke turned her head to look at Carlisle who had just walked into the living room. Rosalie following close behind. "How are you feeling?" The blonde girl moved to sit beside her.
The rest of the family soon started piling in, all of them falling silent when they heard a repeated noise. A heartbeat.
Rosalie tilted Brooke's head, her eyes were brown, her blood was still running through her veins, but her skin was as cold as theirs.
"Carlisle?" Esme called out to her husband, the man was deep in thought. "I'd like to test something. Esme, would bring anything we have from the kitchen?" He asked before disappearing up to his office.
"I—I don't understand..." Brooke looked at Rosalie for answers.
"When we found you, your heart wasn't beating." Jasper spoke up. Brooke's eyes widened, the solemn look on the others faces gave her the answer she was looking for.
Soon, Carlisle returned with a blood bag in hand, along with a plastic cup, Esme followed suit an apple in hand.
"Try eating this." Carlisle gently took the apple from his wife's hand and handed it to Brooke. Her expression showed pure confusion but she did it anyway.
Biting into the apple, she felt normal.
"Just tastes like a regular apple." Brooke told them, not understanding their confusion. "Okay, now this..." Carlisle poured a little of the blood from the bag into the cup.
Grimacing, she took the cup as he handed it to her and sipped it. It tasted irony but sweet. They watched as she drank until the last drop, wiping her mouth once the cup was empty.
"Extraordinary..." Carlisle's expression was one of fascination.
"It appears, you're still human although the venom did have some effect. It seems as if you're body's fighting the venom, but they are at equals." He explained, "There's rarely any cases like this from what I've heard."
"So, I'm still human?" Brooke questioned.
"You're in between, human and vampire." Carlisle confirmed. "I'd advise you stay with us for the time being, you may be human but you're craving for blood is much stronger."
Brooke's eyes watered. "What about my dad? My friends?" She sniffled, solemnly, Alice handed over a paper to Brooke.
Her missing persons poster.
"As of this morning, you were declared a missing person." Rosalie told the girl, her tone soft. From the moment she saw Brooke unresponsive in Emmett's arms, Rosalie felt sad.
She wouldn't wish this life on anyone, especially not for someone who didn't deserve it.
"Why don't we give Brooke some space?" Carlisle gave each of his children a look, before leaving the room with Esme.
Before Rosalie could leave, Brooke grabbed her wrist. "Can you stay?" And so she did, holding the girl as she sobbed.

"Where's Paul?" Sam asked, walking into his and Emily's shared home. His question directed at the pack, who were all dispersed around the house.
"Right here." Paul spoke up, walking into from the back door. "What's going on?" The boy noticed the conflicted expression on the older mans face. Sam sighed, he knew how important Brooke was to everyone, and he hated that he was the one to break the news.
"Have any of you heard from Brooke?" At his question, Paul seemed to tense.
"I saw her last night, she was at my house. Then she went home." Jacob answered, confused as to why Sam brought it up.
"Sam?" Emily placed a warm hand on her fiancée's arm.
"Brooke never made it home. Chief Swan's officially declared her missing." Paul swore his world had frozen, he shook his head in denial. Until, Sam handed over the poster that Billy had given him.
"No, no, that's not true!" Jacob scoffed, taking the poster from Sam's hands. "I—I just saw her last night." His voice broke as he spoke.
Paul felt like he couldn't breathe, his breathing shaky, and his vision becoming blurry. "Paul?" Sam noticed his behavior.
Without a word, the boy stormed his way out of the house. Shifting once he disappeared into the treeline, running off.
