- chapter five
โ EMBRY HAD GONE MISSING. Brooke was sure of it, what other explanation could there be for him to just ghost everyone only days after Brooke spent the night at his house.
"Jake!" The youngest Swan walked into the garage where him and Bella were currently working of the bikes.
The russet skinned boy looked up at the sound of her voice. "Penny? What's up?" Brooke simply waved at her twin who was sitting at Jacob's side.
"Have you heard from Embry? I'm really worried now, he hasn't been at school, he's dodging my calls and texts." Embry had never ignored her before, hence why the sudden change in behavior worried the girl.
"Not since the day after you went to his house, when I called his mom had said he had mono." Jacob shrugged.
"mono?" Brooke repeated in confusion.
A kissing disease. Embry wasn't kissing no one as of recently, or at least no one she knew about. How could he possibly have mono?
'What if he had a secret girlfriend?'
The thought crossed Brooke's mind but she shook it away. No, he'd tell her. Not that it mattered, it wasn't her business. She was just worried.
"I'm gonna head over to his house, just to check." She exhaled before turning to walk in the direction she had came from, shouting a quick 'Thank you!' as she left.
โ
Brooke marched her way a few houses down, leaving her car parked in front of Jacob's home, taking a breath when she reached Embry's house. Immediately noticing that his mothers car was gone.
She jogged up the steps as best as she could in the heeled wedges she wore. Cursing herself for not choosing a different pair of shoes.
"Embry!" Brooke banged her knuckles on the front door.
No answer.
"Em, I know you're in there." She knocked once more, peering through the window but the curtains were closed.
"Please? Em, I'm worried. Just please open the door." She begged, knocking again.
A few seconds later the door opened, but it wasn't the Embry she had last seen.
He seemed taller and more muscular, his hair was short, the shirt he wore looked like the sleeves had been cut off , giving her a glance at the large tattoo on his upper arm.
"You shouldn't be here, Brooke." Embry nudged past her, down the steps and began making his way to the back of the house.
"IโWhat? Embry, what the hell happened to you?" She followed after him, trying to match his pace. "You cut your hair? You got a tattoo? Most importantly, you've been ghosting us?"
Embry stopped in his tracks, turning to face her. "You need to leave, Brooke. Now."
Her eyes widened at his tone. "No. Not until you give me a good reason. What's up with you?" She scoffed, his attitude frustrating her.
"WeโI can't be friends with you anymore." Embry told her, the words knocking the air out of her lungs.
"WโWhat?" Her voice shook. "Why? Did I do something? Was it something I said?" Embry's heart broke at how she spoke. The way she thought it was her fault.
He'd give anything to deny it and tell her that it wasn't her fault. Tell her the truth. Brooke was his best friend.
"That's not itโLook, you need to leave."
Brooke caught sight of three figures approaching from the woods. Sam, Jared, and Paul. Her eyebrows furrowed, before she returned her gaze back to the boy in front of her.
"Give me a reason. Then I'll leave." Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, the sight alone making Embry's heart shatter.
"Look, Penny...it's not you, it's mโ" He was cut off when she gave him an aggressive shove.
"Don't give me that bullshit, Embry!" The tears had shed from her eyes by now, flowing freely down her cheeks. "Give me a real reason." She glared.
"Penny..." Embry looked away, glancing behind him at the boys who stood watching.
"Don't call me that." Brooke pointed a finger at him. "Give me a reason." She was stubborn, something he always liked about her. But now, he just wished she'd let him go.
"I don't want you around anymore!"
Brooke stumbled back, her teary eyes widening. Hurt settling in her body, making itself at home.
"Have a nice life, Embry." Her voice cracked before she turned and walked the opposite way. Before stopping in her tracks and faced him again, this time her gaze set on the three boys by the woods.
"Hope you enjoyed the show." She spat at them before turning back around and leaving, furiously wiping her face of the tears she had shed.
โ
The next day at school, Brooke looked like a ghost. Wearing a simple long sleeved shirt with some low rise jeans and a pair of all white sneakers.
Her hair up in a ponytail, different from the way she usually styled it. No sign of makeup on her face, her eyes were swollen as if she'd been crying all night.
Embry stilled from his place beside Jared and Paul in the hallway when he spotted her, but she payed him no mind.
Simply walking past them, making her way over to where Kim and Quil were standing at Kim's locker. "You okay?" He heard Quil ask in concern but Brooke only nodded in response.
"I'm gonna kill you, Call." Paul growled lowly before storming off.
"Whatโ?"
"Don't worry too much about it. He's still getting used to the whole imprint thing. He tries to deny it but...clearly that's not going well." Jared patted Embry's shoulder as if to try and cheer him up.
"I just wish I could tell her." Embry sighed.
"I know, man. But...she's Paul's imprint. She'll know soon enough, you can apologize then." Jared's words didn't soothe Embry at all, his eyes flickered back over to the sad girl across the hall.
His best friend, if he could even call her that anymore...
