- chapter eight

— "NO, BELLA." Brooke shook her head stubbornly, not sparing her twin a glance as the older of the two stood by Brooke's open bedroom door.

"I thought you and Jake weren't talking?"

"He came to see me last night, he was being all cryptic. Just...would you please come with?" Bella looked at her sister. Brooke sighed when she noticed that Bella seemed upset. She also wanted to know if Jacob had confessed anything.

"Fine. I'll go." The younger twin groaned, standing from her seat in front of her vanity. "Let me just put some shoes on."

The brunette reached down and quickly slipped on the closers sneakers she could find, a white pair. She was wearing her brown juicy couture tracksuit.

"You're wearing that?" Bella raised a brow.

"It's comfortable and cute." Brooke shrugged in response, before walking past her. "Time is ticking, Bella. Let's go."

"Hurry! Before I change my mind!"

She felt bad, keeping such a big secret from her twin sister but she was given clear instructions that this secret wasn't meant to be told. There was no easy way to say it either. Werewolves—Shapeshifters exist? It would be believable though, considering Bella was dating a Vampire after all.

"What's so important anyway? what'd Jacob say?" Brooke asked, hoping her twin wouldn't notice the way she shifted in her seat.

Bella only shook her head at her sister's question as they pulled up in front of Jacob's house. "Just—Just wait here. I'll be quick!" The older twin exited the truck in a rush.

"I could be in bed right now." The brunette groaned.

After a few minutes of waiting, Bella marched out of Jacob's house. "Any luck?" She asked her twin as she got back into the truck.

"We're gonna wait for him down at the beach." Was the only thing Bella said as she reversed, starting the drive to La Push beach.

Brooke sat beside her twin along the rocks, watching as the waves crashed onto the shore. It was moments of just utter silence and calm that Brooke found herself feeling at peace. Where there was nothing that could break her out of her space.

No vampires, no shifters, nothing.

"Hi, Bella." Jacob's voice interrupted her peace, causing the girl to freeze. She hadn't seen Jacob since her turned into a giant wolf right in front of her.

She noticed the way Jacob's eyes flickered over to her, the way his expression changed slightly catching her attention. His eyes showing an emotion she couldn't quite decipher.

"Jake?" Bella stood up from her place on the rocks. Jacob was standing a few paces away, anxiously shifting his weight from foot to foot.

"Dad told me you came by—didn't take you very long, did it? I knew you could figure it out." At that moment, Brooke understood what he meant. Bella knew.

"Yeah, I remember the right story now." Bella whispered.

The light from the sunset was the only source of light there was, she watched as it glistened against Jacob's tan skin.

"You could have just called." He said harshly.

"I know." The sound of rocks moving slightly caught Brooke's attention. Watching as he began to pace. "Why did you come?" He demanded.

"I—I thought it would be better face-to-face." Bella's tone showed obviously how she'd felt a bit awkward in that moment.

He snorted. "Oh, much better."

"Jacob, I have to warn you—" Brooke moved to stand, stretching as she did so. Sitting on the rocks had become uncomfortable now.

"About the rangers and the hunters? Don't worry about it. We already know."

"Don't worry about it?" Bella repeated in disbelief. "Jake, they've got guns! They're setting up traps and offering rewards and—"

"We can take care of ourselves." He growled, still pacing. "They're not going to catch anything. They're only making it more difficult—they'll start disappearing soon enough, too."

His harsh words seemed to catch Brooke off-guard. She moved towards him with a frown on her lips and eyebrows furrowed. "Ease up, my dad's out there. Dick." She spat.

"Didn't know shifting made you into an asshole!" Brooke mumbled under her breath.

Before he could protest, Brooke took the keys from Bella and marched her way to the truck. Slamming the door as she sat inside of the vehicle.

Brooke had sat in silence, the time of day making her tired. Her head was leaned against the window, eyes closed as she tried to take a nap. A loud knock on the window had her jumping in her seat. "Bella!" She groaned, opening the door.

"Victoria." Is all she said, and Brooke swore she froze. "What?" The familiar picture of the redhead in her mind clearly.

"The day I was in the clearing, Laurent was there—" Brooke looked at her sister with wide eyes. "When was this? Bella, what the hell?"

"The pack killed him—but Victoria's back." Her words made Brooke tense. Shaking her head, memories of James hunting them flooding her mind. "Bella..." The older twin noticed the way she'd began to shake.

"Hey...hey." Bella grabbed ahold of her twin's hands, trying to soothe her. "Jake's gone to tell the pack now. Okay? They're gonna keep us safe, keep you safe."

"Everything okay?" Jacob walked out from the tree, without a word Bella only nodded. But Jacob knew better, he knew Brooke better.

"They're here." Was all he said, Brooke assumed he was talking about the pack.

"Let's go, then."
