iii. hot tub time machine

In a large training room in the compound, Hulk instructed Scott on what to do while Natasha, Steve and the Mikaelsons watched.

"Okay, here we go. Time travel test number one. Scott, fire up the uhhh... the van thing."

Scott opened up the back door of his van and set up the portal.

"Breakers are set, emergency generators are on standby," Steve told Bruce as he walked inside the room.

"Good. 'Cause if we blow the grid, I don't wanna lose Tiny here in the 1950's."

They exchanged panicked looks at the man's words, "Excuse me?"

"He's kidding," Natasha told him before looking at Bruce and whispering, "You can't say things like that!"

Bruce looked at Scott awkwardly, "Just... It was a bad joke."

"You were kidding, right?" Asked Natasha as Scott walked away.

"I have no idea. We're talking about time travel here. Either it's all a joke, or none of it is," He paused and looked at Scott and sent him two thumbs up, "We're good! Get your helmet on, Scott. I'm gonna send you back a week, let you walk around for an hour, then bring you back in 10 seconds. Makes sense?"

"Perfectly not confusing."

"Good luck, Scott. You got this," Steve told him.

"You're right. I do, Captain America."

And then he disappeared into the quantum tunnel.

"On the count of three. 3... 2... 1!"

Bruce pressed the button and Scott appeared once more, however, he was different. He was only a young teenager.

"Uh, guys? This...this doesn't feel right."

"What is this?"

"What's going on?"

"That...who is that?"

Bruce pressed a bunch of buttons hurriedly, "Hold on."

"Is that Scott?"

"Yes, it's Scott!"

The teenage Scott got sucked back into the quantum tunnel before he appeared once more. This time as an old man.

"Ow! My back!"

"What is this?" Elijah asked.

"Can I get a little space here?"

"Yeah, yeah. Can you bring him back?" Asked a stressed Steve.

"I'm working on it!" Bruce told him as he pressed more buttons.

Once more, the old man disapeared and was replaced by a baby.

"It's a baby," Rebekah muttered with a sigh.

"It's Scott."

"As a baby!" Steve yelled tiredly.

"He'll grow."

"Bring Scott back!"

Bruce's eyes moved to Natasha, "When I say kill the power, kill the power."

"Oh my god," She muttered as he walked towards the generators.

"And... Kill it!"

Natasha quickly pulled down the lever which shut everything down and suddenly, Scott, their Scott, got thrown out of the quantum tunnel.

"Somebody peed my pants," He muttered.

"Oh thank god," Natasha whispered.

"But I don't know if it was "baby" me or "old" me...Or just "me" me."

Bruce held up his hands excitedly, "Time travel!"

Steve sighed before walking outside. It was, for the first time in what seemed like five years, sunny. Perhaps it was a sign from the universe that today was the day they would get their family back.

Or mother nature was no longer on her period and chose to be nice for once.

Either way, Steve appreciated the feeling of the sun on his face as he stared up into the deep blue sky.

He missed Bucky and Mia more than he cared to admit. And he was slowly falling apart in grief. He had been putting up a good front, making everyone believe he was doing okay, but it wasn't real.

Steve Rogers was falling apart.

In the distance, the sounds of tires squealing and an engine revving filled his ears. He glanced away from the sky and to the source of the noise.

He watched in confusion as he watched a car speed around the front of the compound before stopping in front of him. The window opened and Tony Stark's face appeared.

"Why the long face? Let me guess: He turned into a baby."

"Among other things, yeah. What are you doing here?"

Tony got out of his car before opening his trunk, "That's the EPR Paradox. Instead of pushing Lang through time, you might've wound up pushing time through Lang. It's tricky. Dangerous. Somebody should've cautioned you against it."

"You did."

"Oh, did I? Thank God I'm here. Regardless, I fixed it," He paused as he held up a small device on his fist, "A fully functioning Time-Space GPS. I just want peace. Turns out, resentment is corrosive, and I hate it."

"Me too."

"We got a shot at getting these stones, but I gotta tell you my priorities: Bring back what we lost? I hope, yes. Keep what I got? I have to, at all costs. And... maybe not die trying will be nice."

"Sounds like a deal."

Tony then pulled out a round object from his trunk and handed it to Steve. It was his shield.

Steve hesitated as he stared at the shield, "Tony..."

"Why? He made it for you. Plus, honestly, I have to get it out of the garage before Morgan takes it sledding."

Steve smiled slightly at Tony's words as he remembered the time Mia and Bucky had stolen it and went sledding on it before using it as a frisbee.

"Thank you, Tony."

"Will you keep that a little quiet? Didn't bring one for the whole team... We are getting the whole team, yeah?"

"We're working on that right now."

— — —

Scott sat outside the compound as he made himself a taco on one of the picnic tables.

The wind grew stronger however as a spaceship landed in front of him.

He glanced down at his taco and noticed all of its contents had blown away.

"Hey, humie! Where's Big Green?" Rocket asked as he and Nebula walked out.

"Uh, Kitchen, I think," He answered aloud before his eyes moved to Nebula, "That's awesome."

Nebula rolled her eyes, "Rhodey, careful on re-entry. There's an idiot on the landing zone."

Moments later, Rhodey landed in front of him. Surprised, Scott dropped his taco, "Oh, God!"

"What's up, regular sized man?" Rhodey asked before walking away, following after Nebula and Rocket.

Bruce then walked over to Scott a few minutes later and handed him two of his own tacos before walking away.

One Week Later

During the past week, Bruce and Rocket had travelled to New Asgard while Natasha travelled to Tokyo to retrieve their fellow friends.

Now, gathered once more in the large room in the compound Thor chugged a beer, droplets of it falling on his overgrown beard.

Tony and Rocket had been building the time machine while the rest watched. To be fair, none of them knew a damn thing about science.

"Hey, I thought you guys were alive when all the major scientists were. How do you four know jack shit?" Tony asked suddenly, his eyes cast toward the Mikaelsons as he screwed in a small bolt.

"Well I was daggered," Kol answered.

"Yeah, so were we," Rebekah told him, pointing at herself and Elijah.

"What about you, doggy?" Tony asked, not even realizing he was using the same nickname Mia used to call the hybrid.

"I was a little busy with my curse and tracking down the Petrova doppelganger."

Tony paused, "Right. Cause that makes so much sense."

Thor smiled as he patted the Original's back, "Klaus!" He yelled drunkenly.

Klaus smiled at the god who had clearly not been doing well throughout the past five years, "Hey, Thor."

"Would you like some fine Asgardian beer? Or some vodka? I brought a new stash just in case," Thor told him.

It was true, Thor had brought a large shipment of Asgardian vodka with him. Did he drink vodka himself? No. But did Mia? Yes.

"I'm good for now," Klaus told him with a small smile.

Five Hours Later

The time machine had worked. Clint had been successfully sent to the past before he was brought back to the present.

They were getting their family back.

"Okay, so the how works," Steve started, "Now we gotta figure out the when and the where. Almost everyone in this room has had an encounter with at least one of the six Infinity Stones."

"Or substitute the word 'encounter' for 'damn near been killed' by one of the six Infinity Stones," Tony cut in.

"Well, I haven't," Scott told them, "But I don't even know what the hell you're all talking about."

"Regardless, we only have enough Pym Particles for one round trip each. And these stones have been in a lot of different places throughout history."

"Our history. So, not a lot of convenient spots to just drop in."

"Which means we have to pick our targets."

"Correct."

"So let's start with the Aether. Thor, what do you know?" Steve asked.

They all glanced at the man who sat in the corner of the room, completely unresponsive.

"Is he asleep?" Natasha asked.

Elijah listened in on the man's heartbeat, "It appears so."

"You sure he's not dead?" Rhodey asked.

After ten minutes spent trying to wake up the god, he was finally on his feet.

"Uh... Where to start? Um, the Aether, firstly is not a stone. Someone called it a stone before. It's more of an angry sludge sort of thing so someone's gonna need to amend that and stop saying that. Here's an interesting story, though, about the Aether. My grandfather, many years ago, had to hide the stone from the Dark Elves. Ooh," He chuckled, "Scary beings. So Jane actually-" He paused as a picture of the woman popped up.

"Oh, there she is. Yeah, so Jane was an old flame of mine. Uh, you know she stuck her hand inside a rock this one time and- and then the Aether stuck itself inside her and she became very, very sick. And so I had to take her to Asgard, which is where I'm from and we had to try and fix her. We were dating at the time, you see. And I got to introduce her to my mother... Who's dead and, um... Oh, you know, Jane and I aren't even dating anymore, so..."

Bruce glanced at his friend and motioned for him to stop.

"Why don't you come sit down?" Tony asked.

"I'm not done yet," The god persisted, "The only thing that is permanent in life is impermanence."

Tony clapped, "Awesome. Eggs? Breakfast?"

"No, I'd like a Bloody Mary. Not like the one Kol's drinking though- I don't think I can stomach that."

The Mikaelson sent him a smirk as he sipped on his blood bag which was ironically from a woman named Mary.

Rocket then stood up and took Thor's place, "Quill said he stole the power stone from Morag."

"Is that a person?"

"No, Morag's a planet. Quill was a person."

"Like a planet? Like in outer space?" Asked Scott.

"Oh, look. It's like a little puppy, all happy and everything. Do you wanna go to space? You wanna go to space, puppy? I'll take you to space."

Nebula rolled her eyes as she switched the screen to display a yellow stone, "Thanos found the Soul Stone on Vormir."

"What is Vormir?" Natasha asked as she wrote it down.

"A dominion of death at the very centre of celestial existence. It was where Thanos murdered my sister."

The room went silent before Rhodey muttered quietly, "Not it."

Then the green stone popped up on the screen.

"That Time Stone guy," Natasha said.

"Doctor Strange," Bruce corrected.

"Yeah, what kind of doctor was he?" Rebekah asked.

"Ear, nose, throat meets rabbit from hat," Tony answered.

"Nice place in the village though," Bruce muttered.

"Yeah, on Sullivan Street?"

"Mm... Bleecker Street."

"Wait, he lived in New York?"

Tony sat up, "No, no. He lived in Toronto-"

Bruce cut him off, "Uh yeah, Bleeker and Sullivan-"

"Have you been listening to anything?"

"Guys. If you pick the right year, there are three stones in New York," Natasha concluded.

"Shut the front door."

— — —

Now, the Avengers and Mikaelsons walked up to the Quantum Time machine all in quantum suits as they readied themselves to go back to 2012.

"Five years ago, we lost. All of us. We lost friends... We lost family... We lost a part of ourselves. Today, we have a chance to take it all back. You know your teams, you know your missions. Get the stones, get them back. One round trip each. No mistakes. No do-overs. Most of us are going somewhere we know. But it doesn't mean we should know what to expect. Be careful. Look out for each other. This is the fight of our lives. And we're gonna win. Whatever it takes. Good luck."

Whatever it takes. Six years ago Elijah could distinctly remember Mia telling him the same thing as they laid in a hospital bed after she was almost blown up. The three words had a whole new meaning now.

"He's pretty good at that," Rocket commented after listening to Steve's speech.

Scott looked down at him excitedly, "Right?"

"All right. You heard the man. Stroke those keys, jolly green," Tony told Bruce.

"Tractors engaged."

Rocket glanced down at the Benatar in Clint's hand, "You promise to bring that back in one piece, right?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. I'll do my best."

"As promises go, that was pretty lame."

Natasha smiled, "See you in a minute."

And then they disappeared.

New York | 2012 | A.K.A Battle Of New York

Mia held up her guns as she and the Avengers circled together. She stood by Steve and Natasha's sides as they watched aliens fly around.

In an alley a couple meters away, a bright blue light went off before the Mikaelons, Tony, Steve, Bruce and Scott appeared.

"All right, we all have our assignments. Two Stones uptown, one Stone, down. Stay low. Keep an eye on the clock," Steve told them.

They glanced out of the alley and the Mikaelson's hearts stopped as they watched past Mia jump onto an alien ship before tackling the man off of it.

Mia laughed as the alien struggled in her hold, "Come on! Fight back!"

The alien grunted before past Steve cut its head off with his shield, "Stop playing with them, Mia!"

"Oh, you're no fun, Rogers!" Said the 17 year old Mia as she punched an alien in the face causing its blue blood to splatter on her face.

"That was disgusting," She muttered as she wiped the blood off with her sleeve.

"You know, Steve? When I said I'd be an Avenger I thought we'd be doing cool stuff like Superman, not-" She paused as she shot one, "Not getting covered in gross blue blood- Oh my god what if they try to lay their eggs in me? Steve, I apologize in advance if I try to eat you."

Past Steve sighed, "If I hear another pop-culture reference from you, you're going back home."

Mia glanced up at the tower and watched as a bomb blew up a portion of it, "Yeah. Great idea, Steven. I'll just go get my ass blown up while I peacefully watch Family Guy in the common room which no longer exists!"

Bruce left to find the Time Stone while the rest stayed to get the Mind Stone.

— — —

"Better hustle, Cap. Cap. Things look like they're just about wrapped up here," Tony spoke as he hovered outside the tower.

"Got it. I'm approaching the elevator now. Mikaelsons, where are you at?"

"We're already inside. Loki's taunting Stark," They informed him as they hid behind a wall. They had used their speed to easily enter the tower without anything noticing.

"If it's all the same to you... I'll have that drink now," Past Loki said.

"All right, get him on his feet. We can all stand around posing up a storm later. By the way, feel free to clean up," Said past Tony as he looked at past Steve.

Tony glanced at Steve's ass, "Ugh, Mr. Rogers. I almost forgot that that suit did nothing for your ass."

"No one asked you to look, Tony."

Kol nodded as he looked at Steve's ass, "It's ridiculous."

"I think you look great, Cap. As far as I'm concerned, that's America's ass," Scott told him from his shrunken state on Tony's shoulder.

"Who gets the, uh, magic wand?" Mia asked as she walked into the room, zipping her vest back up as it had gotten messed up from the fight before picking up Loki's scepter.

Tony flew in and hid with the Mikaelsons.

"STRIKE team's coming to secure it," Past Steve answered.

Then the elevator opened up and in came Rumlow and Sitwell along with a few other men.

Sitwell walked towards Mia before gesturing to the scepter, "We can take that off your hands."

Mia nodded as she handed the man the scepter, "By all means. Careful with that thing."

Past Clint nodded, "Unless you want your mind erased. And not in a fun way."

"We promise to be careful."

"Who are these guys?" Asked Scott.

"They are SHIELD...Well, actually Hydra. But, we didn't know that yet," Tony answered.

"Seriously, you didn't? I mean...they look like bad guys."

"You're small, but you're talking loud."

"On my way down to coordinate search and rescue," Said past Steve.

Loki used his magic to transform into Steve, "On my way down to coordinate search and rescue!" He spoke before changing back, "I mean, honestly! How do you think you'll be..."

Thor walked to his brother and slapped a device on his face which immediately silenced him, "Shut up."

As they were about to walk out Tony spoke up, "All right, you're up, little buddy," He gestured to the briefcase, "There's our stone."

Scott laid down on the man's shoulder, "Alright. Flick me."

Tony flicked the small man right onto his past self. Scott landed in Tony's beard only for the man to scratch his face which sent him down onto Tony's reactor.

Tony glanced at the Mikaelsons, "You four okay?"

They nodded and Tony took that as his sign to leave.

"Take the stairs. Hate the stairs," They heard Hulk mutter as he walked past them angrily.

— — —

The Mikaelsons silently watched as Mia walked into a glass door.

"Stupid door," She muttered as she held her nose.

They smiled softly as they listened to her curse multiple times. She was still their Mia, even if they hadn't met her at the time.

She turned around quickly when she heard a noise, "Anyone there?" She called out.

Of course, no one answered.

The Mikaelsons wanted nothing more in that moment than to hug her tightly and never let her go. But they knew they couldn't so they stayed silent.

She sighed before turning around only to see a familiar boy, "Oh, hey, Tommy."

The boy smiled as he wrapped his arm around her, "Hey, baby. How are you feeling?"

Mia shrugged, "I'm fine. They ripped my vest but other than that..." She trailed off as Tommy held her against a wall.

She smirked, "Right now? Really?"

He smiled down at her, "The rest of your team is in the lobby so what better time?"

"We're in the kitchen. If Tony finds out he'll kill us," She told him as she stood up on her toes, glancing down at his lips.

Tommy grinned as he leaned down to kiss her, "Then we'll have to be quick."

The Mikaelsons glared at the young boy as he kissed their soulmate without a care in the world.

It took everything in them not to kill him right then and there for touching her the way he was.

"Are you guys coming?" Tony asked through the ear piece.

"Yeah, guys. Come on, I just got attacked by my past self but I got the sceptre," Said Steve.

— — —

"Cap," Tony started as the star-spangled man joined them in the alleyway once more, "Sorry, buddy, but we got a problem."

Scott scoffed, "Yeah, we do."

"Well, what are we gonna do now?" Steve asked after Tony explained that they lost the stone due to past Loki stealing it.

"You know what? Give me a break, Steve. I just got hit in the head with the Hulk."

"You said that we had one shot. This– this was our shot. We shot it. It's shot. Six stones or nothing. Six stones or nothing–"

"You're repeating yourself, you know that? You're repeating yourself," Tony told Scott.

"You're repeating yourself. You're repeating yourself. You know– No."

"Dude, come on."

"You never wanted a time heist, you went on board with the time heist–"

"I dropped the ball."

"You ruined the time heist."

"Is that what I did?"

"Yeah!"

Kol sighed at Tony and Scott's antics, "Are there any other options with the Tesseract?"

"No, no, no. There's no other options. There's no do-overs. We're not going anywhere else. We have one particle left. Each. That's it, alright? We use that– Bye, bye. You're not going home."

Steve shook his head, "Yeah, well if we don't try, then no one else is going home, either."

"I got it. There's another way. To retake the Tesseract and acquire new particles. We'll stroll down memory lane. Military installation, Garden State," Tony spoke up suddenly.

"When were they both there?"

"They were there at a– I've a vaguely exact idea."

"How vague?"

"What are you talking about? Where are we going?" Scott asked, completely confused by the situation.

"I know for a fact they were there–"

"Who's they? What are we doing?"

"And I know how I know."

Scott looked at them in confusion, "Guys, what's up? What is it?"

"Well, it looks like we're improvising," Steve answered.

"Right. What are we improvising?"

Steve walked towards them before handing Scott the scepter, "Scott, get this back to the compound. Mikaelsons, go back with him."

As Tony and Steve set up the timestamp, Scott spoke up once more, "Cap. Captain. Steve, sorry, America. Rogers. Look, if you do this, and this doesn't work, you're not coming back."

"Thanks for the pep talk, pissant," Tony told him before looking back at Steve, "Do you trust me?"

"I do."

"Your call."

"Here we go."

— — —

They arrived back at the same time as everyone else. Their masks disappeared as they looked around in shock.

"Did we get them all?" Asked Bruce.

"Are you telling me this actually worked?" Asked Rhodey as he chuckled.

They glanced over when they saw Clint fall to his knees.

"Clint, where's Nat?" Asked Rebekah.

The man stayed silent as tears fell from his eyes.

Steve gasped silently in realization before tears appeared in his own eyes. The rest had similar reactions.

— — —

"Do we know if she had family?" Asked Tony as they joined together on a small peer outside of the compound.

Elijah nodded, "M- Mia. Melina Vostokoff and Alexei Shostakov were her adoptive parents. Then all of you."

Seeing past Mia had torn his heart in half yet again. It felt like he was dying and his siblings were in the same boat.

It was like five years ago all over again.

And now they had lost someone who had become family.

All for a rock.

Thor walked over to Tony, "What? What are you doing?"

"Just asked him a question."

"Yeah, no, you're acting like she's dead. Why are we acting like she's dead? We have the stones right? As long as we have the stones, Cap can bring her back. Isn't that right? So stop this shit. We're the Avengers. Get it together."

"We can't get her back," Clint told him.

"What's he- What?"

"It can't be undone. It can't."

Thor laughed, "I'm sorry, no offense, but you're a very earthly being, okay? And we're talking about space magic. And "can't" seems very definitive don't you think?"

"Yeah, look, I know that I'm way outside my pay grade here. But she still isn't here, is she?"

"No, that's my point–"

"It can't be undone. Or that's at least what the red floating guy had to say. Maybe you wanna go talk to him, okay? Go grab your hammer, and you go fly and talk to him! It was supposed to be me. She sacrificed her life for that goddamn stone. She bet her life on it."

Bruce grabbed a bench and hurled it across the lake, "She's not coming back. We have to make it worth it. We have to."

"We will."

A/N

Welp... That just happened.
