Epilogue | Day in the Life of Taehyung
Taehyung's day always starts at six in the morning. He slams his hand onto the alarm clock, rolling across the width of his bed to do so. He hops out of bed, hair messy and drool still staining his face. Then brushes his teeth, washes his face, and makes a cup of coffee, appreciating the calm before the storm. Then, grabs his megaphone, turns it on, and takes a deep breath.
"Rise and shine kiddos!" he exclaims, walking through the halls and knocking on a total of three doors in the process. "Good morning, good morning, good morning!"
He goes around for another few minutes, knocking on doors and singing morning greetings. Groans of displeasure can be heard from inside the bedrooms.
Finally, a door opens.
"Do you really have to do that every morning?"
"Well, if it isn't my favorite daughter," Taehyung says, easily embracing his oldest child and only daughter, ruffling her hair in the process. "Morning, Jinnie."
"Morning." She yawns, and then stumbles into the bathroom.
Next to wake up is Yoongi, who arrives with his arms already outstretched for the routine morning hug from his father. Taehyung picks up the five-year old with ease.
"I want to sleep more," Yoongi says, words slurring as he rubs his eyes.
"I bet you do, buddy," Taehyung laughs. "But you have that super awesome new pair of cat socks that you wanted to show off to your teacher right?"
"Mhmm..."
Taehyung smiles endearingly at his youngest child, taking him to the master bedroom to get him changed and ready for school. On the way, he knocks on the only unopened door.
"You have fifteen more minutes, Justin. You better be brushing your teeth when I'm done with Yoongles!"
The response was a childish, rebellious groan. But, when Taehyung was done getting Yoongi ready for school, Jungkook was, in fact, in the bathroom, groggily brushing his teeth. Taehyung smiled and went to the kitchen.
Jinnie was already there, pouring three glasses of orange juice and expertly setting out plates and utensils.
"Thanks, honey." Taehyung planted a kiss on her forehead as he set Yoongi down on a chair. "I'll take it from here."
Taehyung proceeds with breakfast: he cooks rice, heats up some seaweed egg soup, and then prepares some leftover side dishes from the fridge. Just when he's finished, Justin emerges from the hallway, fully dressed and ready for school.
The kids eat breakfast as Taehyung proceeds with their school lunches. He makes them simple sandwiches and cuts up some fruit. Just for good measure, he adds a bag of chips for them and of course, a note telling them to have a great day and that he loves them.
Once the kids finish, he drops Yoongi off at kindergarten, and then swings by the primary school to drop off his third and fourth graders.
Then drives to the grocery store to restock and buy Jisoo's favorite snacks. This is followed by a trip to the mall, where he picks up Jisoo's gift for their 15th year anniversary. It's a lovely pair of flower earrings. Sparkly enough to be dazzling, but not large enough to get in the way of work while she's not doing surgeries. It's lavender-colored, reminding him of their superhero days.
He chuckles to himself.
After returning home and doing some house maintenance and cleaning, it was already time to pick up the kids.
"Alright kids, do you know what day it is?" he asks once everyone is in the car.
"It's love day!" Yoongi declares, under the impression from last year that a day with roses and heart balloons everywhere simply must be called "love day."
"It's not called love day, silly," Jinnie says. "It's mom and dad's anniversary."
"AKA the day we watch them look at each other with goo-goo eyes and try not to barf."
"Justin!" Jinnie reprimands, but then thinks for a moment. "I mean, you're not wrong."
Taehyung interrupts with a cough, already used to this kind of banter.
"Anyways! We must do something for mom," he says, looking at his watch. "She'll be home in four hours, which means that we have to bake a cake and buy flowers in that amount of time. No time to waste, let's go."
Thus, the Kim family embark on a journey to prepare the perfect surprise for mom. Last year it was roses and heart balloons, with a serenade performed and composed by Yoongi himself (it was a series of rhymes and claps). But the roses all wilted somewhat depressingly afterwards because there were simply too many to take care of, and the heart balloons had glitter on them that everyone kept finding in various areas of the house even weeks after the celebration.
So they decide to do something less messy this year. Only one bouquet, with flowers picked out by the kidsโwhich actually meant Yoongi, because Jinnie and Justin were too busy arguing about the arrangement to realize that Taehyung and Yoongi had already picked something out and paid.
Then, they bake a cake. It's somewhat disastrous. Yoongi cries because Justin puts frosting in his hair, and Jinnie spills food coloring on her shirt so she has to get changed while grumbling about how she ruined her favorite shirt. Taehyung gets a little frustrated here and there, but ultimately wouldn't want it any other way.
He loves rowdiness. He loves being a stay-at-home dad.
Finally, the Kim family finishes their preparations, and Jisoo's arrival approaches. They hide in the living room: Jinnie crouches under the coffee table, Jungkook behind the couch, and Yoongi with Taehyung behind a bookshelf.
At seven pm on the dot, they hear keys jingling. The door opens, revealing a tired, stumbling Jisoo.
"Surprise!" Everyone jumps out from their hiding spot, Taehyung immediately going in for a hug.
"Oh my!" Jisoo exclaims animatedly for the kids. "I had no idea you guys were planning this," she liesโthey do this every year.
"Happy 15th year anniversary, Soo." He pecks her cheek.
"Thank you, Taehyung." She smiles.
"Ew, it's the goo-goo eyes again!" Justin sticks out a tongue.
"Good to see you too, honey," Jisoo says as she ruffles his hair.
The Kim family usually eat dinner in their dining room, but a special day calls for special celebrations. Today, they feast in their living room. Everyone changes into their pajamas, and pig out on Jisoo's favorite meal: instant noodles and rice cakes.
Before, Taehyung would insist that they go out to eat at a fancy restaurant or do a cute picnic for their anniversaries. With kids, they found that restaurants were too stressful, and picnics too messy, so they started celebrating indoors. Jisoo didn't want to hire a babysitter just to get some alone time with Taehyung either (much to his dismay). Besides, they already had occasional date nights every so often.
She had told him that she wanted to celebrate their anniversary with everyone. She had always wanted a complete family, and marrying Taehyung marked the start of her fulfilling that dream. So it was only right that everyone was to be included in the celebration.
Eating instant noodles and rice cakes, in a way, paid homage to her time in highschool. Of course, the rice cakes reminded her time as RC. Taehyung never stopped finding the origin of her superhero name funny.
But beyond that, in highschool she rarely had the luxury to eat out or make intricate meals; yet, she and Jungkook never complained about eating simple instant ramen, late into the night. So many memories of her last moments with Jungkook boiled down to just that: late night instant meals.
After Jungkook died, Jisoo took a long time to gather herself. She doesn't forgive him.
But, she allows herself to mourn the loss.
It was a grueling process to heal, but with Taehyung right by her side the entire time, things weren't impossible. By the time graduation rolled around, he had officially dragged her into his friend group, and she became especially close with Joy. She was even one of Joy's bridesmaids for her wedding with Sungjae.
Taehyung proposed to her shortly after that, taking advantage of the summer break before she started residency to get a ring on her. Taehyung worked a bit at an office job after getting a bachelors in business administrations, but as soon as Jisoo had their first kid, Jinnie, he quit to focus on being a dad. Because both Taehyung and Jisoo were granted scholarships, they graduated practically debt-free, allowing Taehyung and Jisoo to provide for their family, with some financial help from Namjoon and Jisoo's aunt here and there.
Taehyung's parents were hugely disappointed with his decision to stay at home, but with Jisoo by his side, his decision was firm. It didn't matter if his parents didn't support him, what mattered now was his own family and how he'd love them like his parents never could.
That was when life really came together for the two of them. Jisoo would work late nights and leave early in the morning several times a week. But when she had a break, it would be for several consecutive days, and Taehyung would scoop her and the kids right up to go on fun adventures: the zoo, the amusement park, the beach, and many, many more.
After Jisoo finished residency and started making the big bucks, they even went on a few vacations abroad: to the beaches of Thailand, the theme parks in Florida, and even the Eiffel Tower of Paris.
But for Jisoo and Taehyung, it didn't matter where they were; they could be ziplining through mountain ranges in the Himalayas, or eating instant noodles in their living room. As long as they were together, they couldn't have asked for more.
After eating noodles, Taehyung takes the cake out from the fridge and presents it to Jisoo, who kisses him on the cheek in delight.
"Thank you, Taehyung. It looks delicious."
"Anything for you."
She watches as Taehyung prepares slices for the kids, playfully saying that whoever runs and hugs mom the fastest will get the first slice. She's immediately trampled by her three children, all arguing about who hugged her first.
It was a life of bliss.
"Mommy, Justin took my slice of cake!"
"Cut yourself another piece, then." Jungkook huffs as he turns away from his little brother.
"But I'm not allowed to use knives until I'm ten, stupid!" Yoongi argues.
"Then grow up!"
"Guys, stop fighting!" Jinnie interrupts.
"Stay out of it, Jinnie," Justin whines.
Yoongi starts to cry.
Ah, yes. Bliss.
