Chapter twenty-five - Reunion
The next morning me and Newt waited in the line to get ourselves some food.
'Thank you, Fry.' I smiled when he handed me a plate filled with a toast and scrambled eggs.
'Enjoy.' He gave me a nod and continued giving other Gladers food.
I followed Newt to an empty table and we sat down next to each other.
'I'm gonna talk to Alby for a second.' Newt got up again and walked over to Alby. After two minutes Newt walked back and sat down. 'I got some good news.' He announced.
'What is it?' I asked curious.
'Alby said you had a day off.' Newt replied.
'Really? That's amazing!' I was genuinely happy and gave Newt a big smile. Immediately the corners of his mouth turned up when he saw me being happy.
'What are we celebrating?' Minho put his plate down and sat across from us. 'That you two are finally together?' He looked at the two of us.
'I have a day off!' I completely ignored Minho's comment, though I felt my cheeks get red.
'You're lucky.' Minho stretched his arms. 'You guys want to explain somethin' else? Like why you two were sleeping in the same bed.. again?'
'Again? How does he-.' Newt looked at me.
'I walked into you a few days ago.' Minho smirked. 'You slept next to each other two times already! Don't tell me nothing is going on!' He hopefully looked at us.
Before we could response Logan sat down next to Minho. 'Morning.' He brushed his hair out of his eyes.
'Logan. I caught 'em.' Minho said, way too proudly. 'They were sleepin' next to each other.'
'Oh really?' A smirk appeared on Logan's face as he looked at my red one.
'I bet they kissed.' Minho started acting like a little child. 'I bet they did twice already!'
'He's not wrong.' Newt whispered in my ear, really quietly. My face heated up even more.
'Thanks for sharing your dreams with us, Minho. I'm going to shower, see ya.' I quickly got up and walked to the showers.
I turned on the water and waited for it to get a little bit warm. The water wasn't able to get very hot, but I was glad it wasn't ice cold. A shiver traveled down my spine as I felt the water rain on my back. I washed all the dirt off myself and quickly finished showering. After getting dressed I opened the door to walk out of the shower room, but I almost jumped when Newt suddenly appeared.
'Newt! What're you doing here?' I asked. 'Why are you in front of the door?'
'I didn't want any hormonal teenage boys to walk in to you showering!' Newt defended while he scratched his neck.
'You're a teenage boy, standing right in front of the door while I'm showering.' I smirked a little and Newt's cheeks turned red. 'Just kidding. Thank you for doing that, Newt.' I smiled.
'Don't mention it.' Newt laughed a little and together we walked outside.
'So, what does the second-in-command usually do the whole day?' I asked.
'Just whenever Alby's not around I am the leader, but it's a good thing Alby's always around.' Newt chuckled lightly. 'Or I just help everywhere I can.'
Suddenly I heard a loud alarm going off. I gave Newt a worried and confused glance. 'It's the Box.' Newt said while we walked over to it.
Curious about the Greenie I stood around the Box along with some other boys. Newt and Gally opened it and Gally jumped in.
'There's no way back now, Greenbean.' I heard Gally say.
I took a peek in the Box and sadly it was another boy, by the look of his short, brown curls. I couldn't see his face. The kid was looking down with his knees up to his chest. I felt a sign of recognition in my stomach, but didn't understand what it was.
Gally roughly pulled the kid out of the Box.
'Gally, a little gentle, please?' I asked, offended.
'He peed his pants.' Gally growled.
'Take him to the Pit.' Alby commanded. 'Everyone go back to work, the show's over!'
Gally pulled the poor kid to the Pit and I sighed a little. 'I want to meet him.' I told Newt, knowing something was off.
'Sure.' Newt said goodbye and I walked towards the Pits. While I was walking I heard some small sobs coming from one certain Pit, I immediately walked up to that one and bend down.
'Hey.' I looked trough the bars made of bamboo. 'You okay there?' The kid was sitting in the corner of the Pit, knees up to his chest and shoulders shaking. Small sobs escaped from his mouth and I felt really bad for him. Though I didn't see his face yet, I knew he was really young. 'Everything's gonna be alright, okay?' I nicely said.
The kid squeaked and looked up with his watery eyes. And then my mind snapped. I recognized the boy immediately. It was Chuck. My cousin.
'C-Chuck?' I stammered. The kid frowned for a split second, but then made eye contact.
'Nor?' He asked, voice shaking. My heart melted at the nickname and I quickly opened the Pit.
'Let's get you out.' I held out my hand and pulled Chuck up. 'I thought I was never gonna see you again.' I said once we were standing on our feet. 'You still remember me, right?' I asked, just to be sure.
'I do.' The kid nodded. I smiled and pulled him into a hug.
'I can't breath, Nor.' Chuck's voice was muffled.
'I'm sorry.' I chuckled while letting go off him. 'I'm just relieved to see you again.'
'You haven't grown much taller.' Chuck looked at me.
'Is that seriously the first comment you're making?' I sighed a little, but then let out a small chuckle.
'It's true! You're only two inches taller than me.' Chuck chuckled too and his chubby cheeks appeared.
'I'll show you around, okay?'
After I said it Chuck's laugh disappeared, so did his whole mood. Frightened he looked at the four, big stone walls surrounding us.
'Where am I?' Chuck's voice sounded nervous.
'Welcome to the Glade.' I said. 'It's okay, Chuck. I'll explain everything to you, just come with me.' I grabbed his arm and we started walking around.
'Okay, so there are around forty boys here and I'm the only girl.'
'Why?' Chuck immediately asked.
'I don't know.' I sighed. 'All the boys sleep either in the Homestead,' I pointed at the building. 'Or they find a random place in the Glade.' I explained. 'Me and the Keepers have our own hut.'
'Keepers?' Chuck asked another question.
'We have different jobs here. You get to try all of them out, with the Keepers. Basically the person who leads the job.'
'What are the jobs?'
'Builders, Sloppers, Baggers, Cooks, Med-jacks, Track-Hoes, Slicers, Brick-nicks, and Runners.' I counted on my fingers 'Plus the first and second-in-command. That'll be Alby and Newt.' A warm feeling grew in my stomach when I said Newt's name.
'Okay.' Chuck nodded, unsure. 'What's out there?' He pointed at the maze Doors.
'That's the maze.' I sighed as I looked at it. 'Everyday the Runners go in there and try to find a way out.'
I could already see Chuck finding the maze scary, by the look on his face. I was actually curious about the maze, wondering what it would be like and how big it was. Wondering what the Grievers looked like and if the walls on the inside were also covered with the thick ivy.
'Let's continue.' I turned away from the Doors and looked at Chuck again. 'Those are the picnic tables, where we eat. The Blood House, that's were the Slicers work. The Deadheads in the woods, the gathering hut and med-hut.' I motioned at every single building.
'What's your job?' Chuck looked at me.
'Med-jack, it's more like a doctor.' I explained.
'Seems nice.' Chuck replied, processing all the new information. 'When do I get to try out jobs?'
'Tomorrow,' I answered. 'But first we have a bonfire!' I smiled excited.
