the locket

Violet's Outfit

It was the night of the dance, and since it was all 70s themed, all of us girls decided that we were gonna go all out when it came to outfits, hair and makeup!

As I was sitting with Ashlyn behind me, curling my hair, Ricky walked in.

"Hey..." he started.

"What are you doing here?" I blurted out.

"He's here to talk to me!" Ashlyn exclaimed, handing the curling iron over to Gina, who dutifully took her seat.

Ashlyn and Ricky walked outside, leaving me sitting there confused.

"Don't tell me Ricky has feelings for Ashlyn now too", Maddox deadpanned.

Gina and I completely ignored what she said.

"Too soon?" Maddox asked.

"A little", I laughed.

"It's fine. Seriously. I'm with EJ, no worries", Gina said.

A few minutes later, Ashlyn came bounding back in.

"So, what was that about?" Gina asked.

"Oh, nothing. Just a quick question about 70s fashion, granted because I'm the resident expert", Ashlyn replied.

I laughed, "You're not wrong about that".

"I know! Can you imagine the boys faces when we walk in tonight?" Gina exclaimed.

"They're not gonna know what hit them", Ashlyn said, flipping her hair obnoxiously.

I laughed, but boy was she right.

When the four of us walked into the dance, it was almost like being in one of the cheesy teen movies I regularly watched. It felt like all eyes were on the four of us.

Normally, this type of attention would make me feel crazy anxious, but tonight? This summer definitely hadn't gone at all like I'd expected it would, but tonight it was time to go back to my original plan of focusing on myself.

I was with three of my closest friends, we looked fabulous, and tonight my own worries were the furthest thing from my mind.

We danced all night long, all four of us together. Save for when Gina left halfway during the last song, presumably to go be with EJ as he'd been pretty busy all night.

After the last song, I went towards the coat room, as you had to walk out through there to get back outside.

"Hey Vi? Do you have a minute?" Ricky asked, rushing up behind me.

"Sure, what's up? Also I love the outfit! It's very Saturday Night Fever!" I smiled.

"That's the one with John Travolta that's not Grease, right?" Ricky asked jokingly.

"You still have so much to learn", I said, sighing dramatically.

"Anyways, I've been working up the guts to talk to you all summer. So here goes..." Ricky started.

I stood there looking at him. I really liked him and wanted to go back to the way we were, but at the same time I didn't think I was ready to give my heart to him again.

"I'll just say it. I fucked up. I should've fought for you, and I wish that we'd never broken up. And I know it's all my fault and I know I've acted like a total bitch this summer. I like you, Ricky. I really do. But I don't want to give my heart away just for it to be broken again", I ranted.

"No, I shouldn't have been so oblivious. I never should've gone out with Lily. I wish I'd been better to you. But, I'm ready this time. To be there for you, to treat you with the love and respect you more than deserve", Ricky replied.

I looked up at him, tears in my eyes.

"Can we give it another shot, then? See how it goes?" Ricky asked.

I nodded, causing his face to break into a big grin.

"Now, for the second to last item on my bucket list. It's kind of cringy but here goes. Make a huge romantic gesture", Ricky started.

"When did you write that one?" I asked jokingly.

"After thanksgiving. When we had that big fight and I thought you'd never want to be with me again. I didn't know what I'd do, but the other day it finally came to me. So, with the call won from Color War,
I had Maddox and Ashlyn call to order a locket for you. Once it arrived, I gave Ash my favorite picture of us and had her put it in the locket and wrap it for me. That's why I stopped by your cabin today. To pick it up from her", Ricky said.

I smiled, "You shouldn't have! I already have the R necklace".

"No, I wanted to. The R necklace felt right at the time, but it's gotten to the point where it felt too possessive. So, here goes", Ricky said, motioning for me to turn around.

I turned around, and he gently pushed my hair to the side, clasping the locket around my neck.

It was a beautiful understated gold locket. Inside, he'd chosen a picture of us from our first real date last November.

"I love it Ricky! And I love you!" I smiled.

"Promise me we'll be honest with each other from here on out? And we won't let stupid stuff come between us?" He asked.

"I do. I want to be with you, more than ever", I replied.

He answered by kissing me, and just like that it felt like sparks flew and like everything was the way it was supposed to be.

And then...Gina burst into the coat closet, her face streaked with tears.
