first day of senior year
Violet's PJs
It was the night before my first day of senior year, and I had just gotten into bed, prepared to scroll through my phone in hopes of tiring myself out and falling asleep at a decent hour.
I'd just gotten comfortable and had begun a mindless BuzzFeed quiz about which Boy Meets World character I'd be when I heard a knock at my window.
I quickly got out of bed and walked over to the window to see Ricky standing on the small faux balcony outside my room.
I opened the window and let him in.
"You do know that the balcony is fake, right? What if you'd fallen through?" I laughed.
"I didn't think that far ahead," Ricky shrugged.
"So, what are you doing here?" I asked, as we both perched on the edge of my bed.
"I couldn't wait until tomorrow to see you," Ricky said, smiling at me.
I grinned, "I'm glad you're here, because honestly, I couldn't wait either."
"Can you believe tomorrow's the first day of senior year?" Ricky asked.
"No. I still feel like a freshman. It's surreal, honestly," I replied.
Ricky nodded, "I know. It's weird. Everything's changing so quickly."
"Speaking of changes. Ricky, I'm really glad we're back together," I confessed softly, "but with college so close..."
The mood shifted, and Ricky's gaze sharpened, "Violet, are you saying...?"
My voice trembled as I continued, "I think... it might be better for us to break up at the end of the year. Before we head off to college."
The words hung in the air, the weight of their implications palpable. Ricky's brow furrowed, a mix of understanding and reluctance crossing his features.
"Yeah, I get it," he finally sighed, his voice heavy with the weight of my words. "I don't like it, but I get it."
We locked eyes, and silent agreement passed between us. Our days were numbered, but I could tell that Ricky felt the same way that I did, that we'd make every second count.
We talked for a while before he kissed me goodnight and left out my window.
Violet's Outfit
After finally falling asleep, I woke up early to get ready for the first day of senior year, getting all dressed and ready in an outfit that I'd embarrassingly enough planned out months ago.
I drove to school to the soundtrack of Heathers, as the song "Beautiful" seemed especially relevant considering the fact
After parking my car in the senior parking lot, which by the way was way less anticlimactic than I'd anticipated, I went inside and met up with Ashlyn and Gina.
"So, you and Maddox?" I asked as we walked to our lockers and Ashlyn was once again recording a voice memo for Maddox.
"No! I'm just helping her with drama with her ex. And she's helping me deal with being separated from Big Red for so long during his semester abroad. That's all!" Ashlyn said defensively.
"Your blushing says otherwise," Gina said teasingly.
"Seriously, Ash. She's adorable, and you two would be so good together. Just keep that option open?" I said, a smile on my face.
"Noted," Ashlyn blushed.
After settling in and getting our schedules for the first semester, it was time to head to the rehearsal room for an impromptu theater meeting.
We all sat on the risers, with Ashlyn sitting to my right and Gina sitting behind me. Like usual, just as Miss Jenn was about to announce the musical, Ricky walked in at the last minute.
He wordlessly took a seat next to me, as Miss Jenn continued.
"As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted...our musical this year is definitely going to be a night to remember..." she starred.
Ashlyn and I looked at one another, immediately picking up on the reference to "A Night To Remember" from HSM3.
"Without further ado, this year, we'll be putting on none other than High School Musical 3!" Miss Jenn exclaimed.
"Oh my gosh!" Ashlyn exclaimed.
"It's arguably the worst movie in the franchise, but I'm still here for it," I said.
"It is not! We all know that Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure was..." Ashlyn laughed.
"Oh god, that movie was traumatic. Didn't it have Austin Butler in it?" Carlos asked.
Ricky nodded, "Yeah, and the "Good Luck Charlie" kid, for some unknown reason."
"You mean Gabe? I had the biggest crush on him back in the day!" Carlos added.
"He wasn't one of mine," I shuddered.
"Yeah, cause you only had eyes for Mack Alana," Ricky said teasingly.
"Priorities," I replied jokingly.
"That's valid. I was absolutely in love with him," Gina smiled.
After sitting there for a few minutes, it was time for us to go to the first day of school pep rally. I'd like to put it on the record that I'd always absolutely hated the first day of school pep rally, and found it to be a huge waste of time. But whatever.
We all filed outside and sat on the football field bleachers.
However, once the pep rally began, instead of the principal or any of the teacher's none other than HSM icon Coach Bolton himself walked out.
"Oh my god!!" I exclaimed.
"No way! No freaking way!" Ashlyn exclaimed.
Kourtney looked up from her phone, "What did I miss? What did I miss?"
Carlos wordlessly gestured towards the field causing Kourtney to belatedly gasp.
"I'm sure you're wondering why I'm here. So without further ado...I'd like to announce to all of you that "High School Musical 4" will be filming here this semester!"
"Holy shit! Holy shit!" Ashlyn exclaimed.
We all began to freak out. It was a huge deal, considering the fact that we'd all grown up with the original movies and had become even more familiar with them through the past few musicals we've done at school.
"I'd like to introduce you to the stars of High School Musical 4. You know him from his starring role on the kids' sitcom "Mark and Spark"...Mack Alana! And you know her from her viral TikTok videos...Dani!"
"Mack Alana! I had the biggest crush on him. I had a cardboard cutout of him in my room when I was a kid that I'd kiss every night before bed", Gina admitted.
"I loved him! I literally wrote a fanfic about him in sixth grade!" I laughed.
"Give me the link or it didn't happen," Ashlyn demanded jokingly.
"No way! If you read it, I swear I'll never live it down. There's some seriously cringy stuff in there," I laughed.
"Should I be jealous?" Ricky asked teasingly.
I leaned over and kissed Ricky.
"There's your answer," I said, smirking.
After hearing more details of the movie and hearing Dani sing to prove the fact that she doesn't lip-sync, it was time to head back inside and to the rehearsal room.
However, when we got inside, we found most of the hallways blocked off due to the filming, making it nearly impossible to get back to the rehearsal room.
Finally, after taking the most roundabout way ever, we made it back to the rehearsal room.
We'd just sat down to talk about the logistics of auditions for HSM3 when none other than Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman and Lucas Grabeel walked in.
They announced that they'd be on hand while filming the movie, and as EHS drama students that we'd get the chance to be featured extras in the movie!
That was exciting and all, but for me personally, the biggest takeaway was the fact that Ryan would be queer in the fourth movie.
Even as a kid I knew that Ryan was queer, because let's just say that the iconic "I Don't Dance" scene in the second movie had way too much sexual tension between Chad and Ryan. Enough said.
"Since we're East High students, I think we should help out the lead actors. Let them know what it's really like to be a student here," Kourtney suggested.
"That's a great idea!" Monique exclaimed.
"I'll help out Dani," Kourtney said matter-of-factly.
"Alright! Any takers for Mack?" Corbin asked.
"I think Gina and Violet should do it! Considering that they know the most about him..." Ashlyn suggested, smirking at Gina and I.
Gina and I looked at one another and shrugged. Why not do it? There was nothing to lose.
"We'll do it," Gina spoke up.
After we finished our classes for the day, we headed to our auditorium's dressing room, which Mack was using as his own during filming.
I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive to help Mack out and all, just because I didn't know what he'd be like in real life and I figured it'd be pretty awkward.
Gina and I knocked on the door, and when we heard no reply we figured it was probably safe to go in.
We were wrong. Dead wrong.
We walked in on Mack doing a costume fitting, wearing just his boxers. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the view, but still, it was awkward.
"Can I help you?" He snapped.
"Hi! We're here to help you," I said awkwardly, causing Gina to elbow me.
"What she meant was that we're here to teach you what it's like to be an East High student. Anything you want to know, we're you're girls!" Gina exclaimed.
"No," Mack replied.
"No?" I asked.
"No. That means you can leave now," he snapped.
The two of us quickly exited the room.
"He's such a dick!" I exclaimed as soon as we were back in the hallway.
"Seriously. But at least he's hot?" Gina laughed.
"You're not wrong about that. I didn't hate what we walked in on," I said, laughing.
"I know! Too bad he's a shitty person," Gina replied.
"I think I can look past it," I said jokingly.
"Oh definitely."
We continued walking, stopping at our lockers.
"Hey? Can I ask you something? A favor?" I said, before we went our separate ways.
"Sure. What's up?"
"Can you not tell Ricky? About our whole situation with Mack?" I asked.
"Yeah, of course. Not to be rude, but why?" She asked.
"I just don't wanna make things awkward again. Especially since we're newly back together," I replied.
"Yeah! No problem at all."
"Thank you. I owe you, seriously."
"No problem! See you tomorrow!" Gina exclaimed, as we walked away.
So far, senior year wasn't half bad, but who knew how the rest of the year would go.
Especially considering the added factor of HSM4 and the drama that would come from that...
