ALEX ALMOST FELL OUT OF THE JEEP AS VINCE HIT A HUGE BUMP. Needless to say, he was a very reckless driver, and they were chasing a train. They had spent the last couple of months tracking WICKED and panning out the exact plan to save Minho, Aris, Sonya, and Nick from them. There was a train transporting all of them along with everyone else that they had captured, and they had worked out a plan to get them out.
"Brenda, we're coming up behind. Keep 'em busy," Thomas spoke into his radio from the front seat. Vince was driving, leaving Alex stuck in the back, bouncing around.
"Hang on!" Vince yelled, and he steered onto the track so that the wheels of the car were on either side of it. This led to an even bumpier ride. The girl in the back reached up to grasp on to the only remaining handle in the jeep and held it for dear life. "This is crazy, Thomas!"
It was a crazy idea. Alex would admit it as well. When she first heard Thomas suggest it, she almost had to do a double take, especially since he had included her in his part of the plan. Everything about wbat they were doing was crazy, but it was to get Minho and Nick back. Everyone had kind of abandoned all rationality and fear when they thought about that. These were their friends β their family, and they were all going to do whatever it took to get them back.
The boy did not answer. He just continued with the plan. He started to climb out of the moving car as Alex did the same, carefully pulling herself up onto the roof. She was sure that she was going to have bruises from all of the times she impacted the car. They slid onto the hood of the car, and Thomas held out a hook. He turned to the man still driving. "Get us closer!"
Vince sped up slightly so that they could get closer to the back of the train. When they were about three feet away. Thomas leaned over and hooked the hook onto the back of the train, attaching the car to the other vehicle. He jumped onto the back car, and he reached out his hand for the girl. She grabbed it and pulled herself onto the train as well.
"Come on, Vince!" she yelled once she got on. Realizing that the job had been done, the man with long, blonde hair climbed out of the car that was being pulled and onto the hood. The only problem was that the rope between the hook and the part attached to the car was a bit too long, and he would never make that climb. Alex saw the hook beginning to slip from where it was, and she shrieked, "Vince! Jump!"
"Shit!" he exclaimed as he jumped and made it on the train. He groaned as he watched the car get released and flip behind them, completely destroying it as it spun to a halt.
Thomas was about to start climbing the ladder that he and the curly-haired girl were holding on to. "Let's go!"
"Hey! Berg!" Vince yelled, and they all looked to where he was pointing to see a Berg flying toward them and the train. Alex prayed that they had not noticed them hanging on, but the chances of that were very very slim. Thomas yelled into the radio to warn Brenda about the Berg, and then they got going
They got on top of the train and started running across the top to the spot where they were planning on detaching the back cars that had the prisoners in them. Their eyes widened when they saw about half a dozen WICKED men running straight at them, guns in their hands and ready to start shooting as soon as they got close enough. Vince jumped down in between two of the cars and got to work while Alex and Thomas covered him by pulling out their guns and shooting at the WICKED soldiers trying to stop them. Vince yelled up to them, "Give me the bag!"
Alex whipped the bag off of her shoulder while Thomas covered her and dropped it down to where Vince was. He caught it, and she went back to shooting. She ducked as one of them pointed their gun straight at her head, but it ended up flying past her right ear because they had no aim at all.
"Vince?" Thomas called because they were about to run out of bullets. The men were also moving closer toward them on the train, and they were struggling to hold them back
"We're set! Cover your ass!" he shouted back, and both Alex and Thomas did not hesitate to move back on the train and duck as a small explosions erupted from where Vince just was. "Take cover!"
Their part of the train began slowing down as the front part get going, indicating that they had successfully detached it. Finally, it came to a stop, and they all hopped down and onto the ground. Vince yelled into the distance, "Newt!"
"All right, come on, let's go," they heard Newt's voice say, and his head along with some others popped out of the bushes that dusted the very sandy area.
"Minho!" Thomas yelled while banging on all of the compartments and listening. There was so much yelling, but Alex knew that they would be able to tell which one was Minho. "Minho, can you hear me?"
She listened closely and heard one voice above the rest. It was one that she knew anywhere, and it was just slightly louder than all of the other teenagers screaming. She tapped on the compartment that she was near. "This one. This one!"
"Oh, shit!" Vince exclaimed, and Alex walked over to where he and Thomas were standing while Newt did his thing with the train. The front part of the train had stopped, and there were even more soldiers running at them this time. "It's gonna be close."
"Newt, how you doing?" Thomas asked as he and the girl climbed on top of the car that he was working on. He was trying to detach the compartment from the part that had the wheel of the train on it. The two on top laid down and held their guns in front of their faces, ready to kill some WICKED people when they were close enough to shoot.
The blonde boy responded with a quick, "Don't rush me."
"Newt, get up here," Alex yelled as the men in black suits started firing at them. She watched a bullet barely miss his back, and it was making her very very nervous about it. Vince was covering him and the other people helping him, but would that be enough?
He just continued to work, knowing that they needed this to be done. Finally, he made it all the way through the metal with his torch and began climbing up the ladder as Vince ordered, "Newt, go!"
"Where the hell are they?" the blonde asked once he got up with Alex. Brenda, Jorge, Frypan, and the others were supposed to have been there by then to lift the compartment so that they could go. Some of the other boys that were helping Newt joined their side as they continued to fire.
Thomas shook his head, indicating that he had no clue what was taking so long. "I don't know!"
"All right, boys, we're here!" Alex breathed out a sigh of relief when she heard Jorge's voice through Thomas's radio. She looked up, but there was no need because she could already feel the breeze from the Berg above them that they had hijacked. Newt, Thomas, and Alex stood up as the Berg stopped and a hook began to lower from the vehicle..
They grabbed the hook and attached it to the compartment with a cable that Thomas had brought. They gave Frypan the thumbs up before leaning over the side to where one person was still on the ground. "Vince, get up here! Now, Vince!"
"Whoo!" Alex cheered once Vince was on and they lifted up. It felt like they were flying β partly because they were swinging through the air on a storage compartment and partly because they were so happy. She hugged Newt out of excitement and fought the urge to jump.
They opened it with Newt's torch as soon as they got back to the base. Thomas grinned when he saw Aris and Sonya and rushed over to them to make sure that they were all right. "Aris. Hey, you guys okay?"
"Yeah, we're fine," he answered, and Harriet ran over to them to hug them.
Alex pushed past all of them and scanned the faces as she walked down the aisle and toward the back of the compartment. Thomas assured them that they were okay, and he looked up at Alex as she paused at the end of the rows and turned around. His stomach dropped when he saw the expression on her face. "He's not here."
