Chapter 1
Olivia Reese was a fascinating, enchanted, and open-hearted girl. Everyone who knew the brunette knew that they could confide in her about quite literally everything and anything. Most importantly, she would do anything for the people who occupied a space in her warm heart. Anything that she had to sacrifice, would instantly be if it meant keeping anything dangerous away from those she loved.
Her hair was a hickory brown with delicate strands of caramel brown that would hide in spaces of her full locks. She was gifted with soft and rich hair that was surely given to her from her mother's side of the family. Her eyes were a tone of hazel, but the green was much more prominant.
This same brunette girl was also a heart-struck fool for her best friend. She would never admit it if it was the last thing she was to do. Olivia was witless for the cleaned-up, brunette haired boy who would do anything for her. Go to her when she needed him. Hurt anyone who hurt her. Steve Harrington.
Speaking of which, Olivia was aware of the girl who Steve had eyes for. She was always the one Steve would talk to about the girl. As much at the hazel-eyed girl loved how head-over-heals he was for her, she couldn't help but blame herself for never making a move sooner when he wasn't thinking about someone else. Perhaps he was still thinking of Olivia at all times, even when with other people, but she knew that his thoughts of her weren't worth much when he was holding another girl or kissing someone else, because truthfully, she wanted it to be her.
Olivia sauntered into the school female bathroom, running her hand through her roots, pushing it out of her face. As the brunette got ready to keep forward, she stopped with complete shock to meet the lingering eyes of Steve. She was beyong troubled by the amount of scenarios that could be the reason of this encounter, but when she caught a small brunette girl in the corner of her eye, she immedietly knew what this was all regarding.
"Hey, Liv." The tall boy lifted his hand from behind his back, holding his hand up as a greeting. He gave his best friend a chipper smile, but one she couldn't return so easily.
"Seriously, Steve?" Was all that the girl could say when looking at his nervous glance. "Like, of all places?" Olivia was quick to shake her head, a disturbed look twisting her face. She turned her head to glance at Nancy, who was looking down at the ground, pursing her lips and rubbing at her neck anxiously.
"Olivia, are you gonna say anything?" The girl questioned shakily, but the hazel-eyed girl only sighed, shaking her head softly this time. She let out a faint chuckle before giving the boy a glance then turning back to Nancy. "No, no I'm not gonna say anything. I'm not like that."
She observed Nancy let out a relieved sigh before looking up at Steve passionately. Olivia could so clearly see the romance that was glowing in their eyes. If she was honest, it hurt her to see it so clearly, or seeing it at all. She felt a certain way for her best friend, even though she didn't know what he felt, she knew it was never going to go away regardless of any girl.
Olivia realized that she too was looking up at Steve, so she looked down quickly while clearing her throat. "But, I do suggest keeping this less in the open. 'Kay?" She raised her brows at the boy, giving him a stern yet mischievous glare.
Steve quickly sighed before giving his best friend a reassuring nod. He knew that she wouldn't leave till she got him in check to prevent him from getting himself into anything stupid without realizing.
"Thank you, Liv." The brunette boy mumbled with relief as he watched Olivia saunter out of the bathroom with a long sigh and the shake of her head.
The girl rolled her eyes in annoyance before throwing her hand in the air. Truthfully, it hurt her to just leave when she had such an open chance to stop it. But, if it made him happy, she couldn't ruin that for her best friend, despite her undying and hidden feelings. But yet, she still could only mumble, "Whatever."
.
Olivia went to fourth period, already knowing that her best friend would be sitting next to her and she would have to face him after knowing he had eyes for Nancy Wheeler. She hated the thought of Steve loving someone else, but because it was Nancy, it hurt a little more. When the two girls were younger, they lived next door. They grew very close and had a strong relationship, but when her parents insisted that they move almost an hour away for what her father said was, "an outstanding job offer that can give us much more," the two girls had to part, leaving Nancy alone with nobody to go to when she needed, and Olivia to be forced away from her close friend.
The brunette boy walked into the room, a chipper smirk drawn at his lips. Immediatly, Olivia knew what he was doing minutes before once she left the bathroom.
Steve slipped into his seat next to the girl, his arms hanging on the table in front of him, and his head turned torwards her. But, when he saw her looking straight on, an annoyed look etched on her face and her jaw clenched tightly.
"You alright?" Was all the boy asked when he noticed her state. When his best friend didn't answer, he leaned closer to her, the sight of him lingering was in the corner of her eye. "Liv."
The brunette girl turned her head with a miffed glare. It caused Steve to quickly draw his brows together in confusion. "What's wrong?"
Olivia kept a strick glare while saying, "Nothing." Of course, Steve was denying her every word, because he knew when she was upset.
"Yeah, so I'm not buying that." He let out a soft chuckle, tilting his head with pursed lips. The boy was so easy to know that she was lying to him, but he didn't understand the sudden change of her emotions and why she gave him the evil eye.
"Steve." Olivia sighed as she closed her eyes and spoke his name. "Nothing is wrong." The girl spoke sternly as she fixated on his eyes.
"Okay, okay." The boy lifted his hands into the air next to his head, raising his brows in surrender. He had to admit, her adult-like stare would always startle him, and that's when he knew to back off and leave her be. But, there are times when he would only keep urging because he knew that she would lie when she said she was okay.
"Do you wanna come over tonight?" The girl quickly blurted out to the boy, but immediatly saw how his elated smile fell. The hazel-eyed girl drew her brows together in confusion, but soon realized what the problem was when he cleared his throat and adjusted himself in his seat.
"I can't." The boy pursed his lips awkwardly before continuing to speak. Steve was nervous to talk to her about his relationship status to her, considering that he has always had a thing for her but was never brave enough to say anything. So instead, he drowned his problems by distractions, or those distractions being different girls that weren't his best friend. "Yeah, I can't. I'm going over to Nancy's house."
Olivia sighed before swallowing hard. She had to admit that she was annoyed, not because he was happy, but because he wasn't happy with her. Well, she was also hurt because he would never notice her in that way, and that's all she has wanted from him. The brunette girl sat up in her seat before she cleared her throat, then resting her chin in the palm of her hand.
Steve could quickly notice her whole demeanor change. "Look, I'll make it up-"
"No. No, it's fine." Was all that the smaller girl could say without any evidence of her voice cracking or hurting inside. She quickly picked up her pencil and started scratching away at her paper, her chin still flat on her palm.
"Well, are you sure?" Steve waited for her answer, which she quickly gave him. "Yes, I'm sure, Steve."
.
Olivia wasted no time to go home, and when she did, the first thing that her eyes laid on was her mother laying lifeless on the couch. There were bottles of beer and a jug of vodka decorating the coffee table. The girl let out an exhausted sigh before sauntering over to her mother and removing the bottles off of the table. She turned back around and stopped in her tracks when she was hovering above her mother. She clenched her jaw softly before laboriously pulling a throw blanket over her mother's body and leaving her to sleep.
This was a normal routine for Olivia, and she always knew her mother was alive when she saw her chest slightly growing up and then falling down once more. She would always return home to her mother passed out on the living room couch, and her father clearly not home based off the dreadful silence. Her father was always one to be the easier-going and lovable parental figure to her, but it wasn't very often that he was home, and Olivia knew he regret every decision leading up to his constant disappearance from home. And the only person that really knew of her home life, was Steve. She would normally go to him for comfort, but she didn't trust his loyalty at the moment and he hurt her too much to be near him.
She quickly bounded off upstairs into her bedroom where she felt most safe when the comfort of Steve nor her father were there and when her mother was passed out on the couch, like most nights.
She sat at her vanity that was across from her bed. She pulled her hair back into a loose french braid that left small strands framing her face. She then pulled her small cassette player from the back of her quite spacious closet before taking her favorite tapes out and inserting it into the player. She felt as ease when drowning her thoughts in her music, so she laid flat on her bed. She crossed her legs, rested her head on the pillow and let her hands fall on her stomach.
For once, she didn't feel safe in her music, instead, she felt hurt as she thought about her best friend. The thought of him brought burning tears to her eyes knowing he was with Nancy instead of her. She closed her eyes slowly, feeling her tears slide down her cheek slowly. Then for a moment, the sad girl wasn't thinking about being in her best friend's arms, but away from them. She no longer thought about kissing him, instead, she thought about the the relief it would bring her if she no longer was thinking about the pain he caused her when he would be with other girls, but mostly being with what used to be her one of her close friends, Nancy Wheeler.
