11.The Lake ☆

Thomas's pov

After arriving back to the glade after an hour or so, We are all now gathered, around newt and gally, who apparently had a gathering which made Minho annoyed, anyway, Minho stood next to me, while Cara stood behind us all, her arms folded, her hip cocked like before, not speaking a word. I start speaking, looking between Newt and Gally as I pass over the weird container.

"We found this inside a Griever." I look to Newt as I hand it to him, beginning to examine it, his eyebrows furrow showing his confusion at the object.

"These are the same letters on our supplies." He wiped the goo away with his thumb making it easier to see the letters, w.c.k.d.

I nodded my head, agreeing. "Yeah, whoever put us here obviously made the Grievers and this is the first real clue, the first anything you've found in over three years, right Minho?" I point to the object in Newt's hand, turning my head to look to Minho, he nods slightly, moving to stand up straighter, appearing more confident and unfolding his arms. I turn my attention back to Newt.

"Newt, We've got to go back out there. Who knows where this might lead us." Newt looks to me, unsure about it. Gally looks to me then to Newt, shaking his head in disbelief.

"You do realise what he's trying to do, right?" He points his arm to me, his eyes wide slightly. "First he breaks our rules, then he tries to abandon them completely. The rules are the only thing that held us together, why now are we questioning that?" He paused, taking a breath before speaking. "If Alby was here, you know he'd agree with me." The room fills with thick sharp air as he says that, clearly everyone doesn't want to remember the state their leader, Alby is in.

"This shank needs to be punished, maybe the rest of them too, especially shorty over here." He says, sarcasm in his voice, he points to Cara referring to her as 'Shorty'. She rolls her eyes, scoffing.

"Oh, Shut up Gally. If we wanted to hear from a slinthead, we would of asked for your opinion." She utters, annoyance in her tone as she replies back to him, the nickname rolling of her tongue.

Gally clenches his jaw at her sarcastic comment, He takes a deep breath, pointing sharply with his finger at her. "You better watch your mouth, before I throw you in the pit as well." She opens her mouth to speak but is interrupted by Newt, who changes the subject.

"You're right. They broke the rules, one night in the pit and no food." He looks between me and Cara, leaning on the wooden pole, folding his arms. This sets Gally off again, flinging his arms in the hair, huffing.

"Oh cmon Newt, one night in the pit? You think that's gonna stop him from going into the maze?" He raises his voice.

"No." He pauses, tilting his head to Gally. "And we can't have non-runners running into the maze whenever they feel like it."

"So, let's make this official. Starting tomorrow, Thomas. You're a runner." I nod, but clearly Gally isn't happy as usual, he huffs.

"Wow." He shakes his head, unfolding his arms, before walking to the door. Fry tries to stop him, but he ignores him, slamming the door behind him.

I look to Newt. "Thanks, Newt." He doesn't reply, looking away from me to the ground.

After the meeting, I wonder out the room, Everyone else disappears off, I noticed Cara being quiet and immediately walking out the room after the meeting had finished, I look round the glade, looking for the familiar brunette haired girl but she was no where to be seen, I began walking into the woods.

The trees towered over me, the leaves whistling in the wind, the crunches of twigs snapping under my feet. As I walk deeper into the forest, I notice the trees thinning out a bit, as I continue my adventure , I come across an opening. My eyes are meet with a deep sea of light green/blue water, I scan my eyes over it, immediately taking notice of the girl sat on a far rock, looking down at the lake, her feet barely touching the water.

I watch from a distance, before I walk up to her, she didn't seem to notice me at first until she heard my footsteps, she tilted her head to look at me, her eyes drifting over me, before our eyes lock.

"You gonna stand there all day?" "She questioned, raising her eyebrows as she patted the space next to her, looking back in front of her.

I shook my head slightly, blinking quickly as I was taken off guard by her words, I sit down next to her, letting my feet dangle over the edge. It was silent for a few moments as we both noted trees swaying in the wind, the birds singing, and the water splashing against the rocks, before the silence is broken, I turn my head to the side, slightly looking down to her.

"What's your favourite colour?" She asked, staring off into the distance, before looking back to me, making our gaze lock.

I furrow my brows, taken back by the odd question she asked me, before shaking my head, getting rid of the thoughts.

"What?" I asked, dumbly.

"Oh come on, it's not like it's hard." She muttered, raising her eyebrows slightly.

"Uh, blue I guess?" I finally answered.

She nodded, before pausing then asking another question.

"Why?" She looks up to my eyes, I turn my gaze in front of me, thinking about my answer.

"Dunno, reminds me of the ocean, and the sky I guess." I shrugged, glancing to her briefly.

She nodded, smiling softly to my answer.

Her smile.

I look down to her, it's my first real time looking at her, studying her features. She's got green eyes, reminding me of the forest and soft brunette hair, it's flows down her shoulder gently, her eyebrows are thick and curved, a big light pink lips.

I sigh slightly, looking back to her eyes.
"What's yours?" I asked my voice low and gentle.

"Purple, reminds me of lavender, and the smell of it." She shrugged slightly as she spoke. I nodded slightly, thinking for a moment.

"What are you doing out here anyway?" I questioned, leaning my arms on my thighs as I tilted my head back to look at her. She glances briefly at me.

I can clearly see she is hesitating, unsure about answering, she gulps. "Just...thinking."

I push more, wanting to know what was going on through her mind.

"Care to tell what you were thinking about?" I tilted my head slightly.

"It's stupid, just..thinking about my life before..this happened." She mumbled, making me barely hear it. My mouth parts slightly, thinking how to say my words properly.

"I-I think right now we should just focus on what we have now, and getting out of here." My voice is calm and gentle, trying to get my point across.

"Thanks Thomas..." She looks down to her lap, fiddling with her hands.

It was silent again, as usual, I had caught myself glancing at Cara a few times. I was staring into the water when I heard the girl shifting, standing up, beginning to take of her boots, then her top, revealing her purple vest.

Piece by piece, her clothing falls to the ground, showing her bare skin, leaving her in a vest and her underwear, the sunset  light kisses her skin, highlighting her features like a work of art, I can't help but admire her body. With a big grin, she steps closer to the edge.

"What are you doing?" I grin slightly.

"Come on, it's fun!" She grins before taking a step forward, jumping into the water with a splash, i grin slightly, the water soaking my clothes, her head emerges from the water, she giggles at my soaked body, brushing her hair out of her face.

"Come on!" She grins, I shake my head.

"No way." She groans, before smirking, she walks closer, I can clearing tell she's planing something.

"Help me out then." She mutters, her smirking still planted on her face, lifting her arm up so I can grab it, I gladly take it, before suddenly I'm surrounded by water, I swim to the top, shaking by my head, making water fly everywhere. Cara laughs at me.

Her smile, again.

As I catch a glimpse of her smile, my heart skips a beat, like a burst of sunshine, radiating warmth and joy. Her lips curve upwards, showing her genuine happiness. There's something captivating about the way her eyes crinkle at the corners when she smiles. It's as if her whole face lights up, creating a harmony of joy.

I shake my head again, a smirk falling on my face as I splash water over the the girl who shrieks and dodges it. She copies what I did, splashing water over to me, until I grab her wrist, pulling her towards me, not noticing how close we were.

As our eyes lock, I feeling my breath hitching in my throat, feeling a surge of emotions course through my veins. My heart pounded against my chest, making me wonder if she could hear it. I could feel the warmth of her breaths against my skin, time seemed to slow down, every second stretching out in anticipation, we continued to stare into each others eyes. A lump in my throat, stopping me from speaking.

Until.

An unexpected interruption shattered the moment. A loud shout echoed through the glade, causing us to jump back in surprise. Making it seem like the universe conspired to keep us apart, teasing us with possibility of something only to snatch it away.

We exchange a disappointed and awkward glance, our unspoken longing hanging in the air. Through our lips remained untouched, the tension between us lingered, leaving us both yearning for what could have been.

It was Frypan shouting for dinner.

We stood there in the water still in silence, the air thick with awkwardness. Each passing second felt like an eternity as I searched for something to say. My eyes darted around, avoiding direct contact as of the mere act of looking at each other would make the tension more unbearable, I finally clear my throat.

"Guess we should go." My voice quivered, low and uncertain. She nodded slowly.

"Uh, yeah." The girl responds, as we begin to make our way out of the lake. My thoughts cloud my mind.

What would of happened if we weren't interrupted?
