Anastasia Sloan.
Baby Sloan.
The mistake.
At least, that's what her parents always called her. A drunken night, a broken condom, a pregnancy too far along to erase without raising eyebrows. Anastasia wasn't wanted-she was an accident her parents couldn't cover up.
If it wasn't for her brother, Mark, she doesn't know what would have become of her. Their parents forgot she even existed half the time. Mark remembered dance recitals, school pickups, late-night fevers. And when he couldn't, the Shepherds did.
Because the Shepherds weren't just friends. They were family. Derek was Mark's person, and Amelia was Anastasia's. Two kids joined at the hip, inseparable-until one night tore everything apart.
Ana was supposed to go to that party with Amelia. But her parents dragged her to a gala instead. A last-minute change that saved her from witnessing Amelia's spiral into addiction-but put her in the passenger seat the night her mother lost control of the car. Only one of them made it out alive.
After that, Ana's world cracked. Their father drowned himself in grief and whiskey, Mark left for college, and Ana was left behind. So she lied. She said she was fine. She said she was at the Shepherds'. But really, she was wasting away in silence.
When Mark came home that summer, he barely recognized her-pale, brittle, lifeless. And he made a choice: he took her with him. To New York. To Derek. To the only place that still felt like home.
Therapy, long nights, relentless work-Ana clawed her way back. She discovered medicine. She discovered the high of surgery, the rush of blood and adrenaline, the fragile miracle of holding someone's life in your hands. She decided that if she couldn't save her mother, if she couldn't save Amelia, then maybe she could save someone else.
Boston gave her medical school, and Jackson Avery-another kid with a father-shaped hole in his chest. They weren't lovers. They were more. Soul-deep best friends who understood what it meant to be broken.
But exams and sleepless nights blinded Ana to the truth. The calls she missed. The silence from Derek. Addison's desperate voicemails. By the time Ana walked into Seattle Grace on her first day as a surgical intern, the lies had caught up to her.
Her brother was gone. Derek was gone. Everything she thought she knew about her family-shattered.
But this is Seattle Grace. Here, trauma lives around every corner. So does heartbreak. And so does love.
And sometimes, when you're drowning in loss, you find the family you didn't know you needed.
