chapter 3 - Exams and a New Friend

Today my friends and I, minus Eishiky, would go for UA's entrance exams. After my usual morning classes, I headed to the cafeteria for lunch. I got some rice and broccoli and sat at a table by myself. My friends and I all go to separate junior highs and we met each other at Ice Skating when we all first started at 5 years old so we grew up with each other. "Is this seat taken?" A voice asks. I look up to see a girl with long blonde hair tied into a ponytail and purple eyes that had triangle birthmarks around them.

"No." I say. A moment of silence goes before she speaks. "My name's Kido Mirai...you?" She asks. "Nozomi Hitomi." I answer. "Hitomi?!" She says in awe. "Like the Steel heroes?" She asks. "Sadly yes..." I sigh. "Why is it sadly?" She asks. "Oh! I said that out loud didn't I? Uh, nothing just forget it." I say before taking a bite of rice. "Hitomi-san, are you going to go to a hero high school?" Kido asks. "Yeah, UA," I say. "And no need for the formalities you can just call me Nozomi." I say. "Oh, ok then. So you're headed to UA huh? I got a recommendation there but I declined politely because I'm interested in Shiketsu." Kido says.

I try not to choke on my food at the mention of Shiketsu. It's not like I have anything against it it's just that it catches me off guard when I hear it since it's where my parents wanted me to go because if I didn't I'd be "falling out of our family line". "I chose Shiketsu because my friend is going there and encouraged me to go aswell." Kido says. We both talk about stuff before it's time for the next period. The next thing I know the bell rings and I pack up. I pack up my bag and put it on my back. I walk out of the class and stop by the shoe lockers to retrieve my outside shoes.

I slip my shoes on and tap the toes to make sure they're on and walk out of the building. I catch my train just on time to UA. Once arriving in the city I walk off the train and then walk the way to UA. I stop at the gate and my stomach turns at how big the building is. It's bigger than I imagined and my nerves are going haywire now. I sit on a bench outside of the gate and try to breathe. "Hey, Nozo!" I hear Yumi's voice call. I turn to see her, Tokiko, and Hikari walking my way. "You excited about the exams?!" Tokiko asks with a bright smile.

"You take a look at how big this school is and then guess my answer." I say pointing to the gate entrance. Hikari sits down next to me on the bench as Yumi and Tokiko look at the school. Tokiko walks the other way as if she was quitting and running off but Yumi grabs her by her collar preventing her. Yumi drags Tokiko with her as she walks back to Hikari and I. "Ok so it's big what's there to be scared about?" Yumi asks standing Tokiko up. "I'm not scared just nervous." I say. "Well look at it this way...if you go and get in, which you will, you're one step closer to becoming a hero and saving your brother!" Hikari says with an encouraging smile.

I can still remember my breakdown yesterday after hearing about what my parents did.

"Ok then! Let's go, before I change my mind." I say standing up and handing Hikari a hand for her to stand. "That's the spirit!" Tokiko says. The three of us walk past the gate taking the same first step at the same time and breathe in. We then walk all the way up to the door and make our way to the lecture hall where the explanation for the exam would be held. The Pro-Hero Present Mic walks out to explain the exams. As he was explaining the Practical Exam a boy with short blue hair and glasses stands saying something about the Pro getting something wrong. He also called out a boy with curly green hair for mumbling.

After that, we were directed to changing rooms to put on the correct clothes for the exam. I put on a white short sleeve crop top that had a black long sleeve shirt under it and some black leggings along with dark purple and white tenny shoes. Me and my friends walked out and followed the rest of the people to where each different exam field was. Yumi was in field A, I was in field B, Hikari was in field C, and Tokiko was in field D. I looked around at everyone warming up for the countdown and I was still nervous. Most of these people from the looks of them had been training for this since forever while to only training I have is when I have emotional breakdowns and trying to prevent my quirk from killing me.

My quirk, Hanahaki, gives me the ability to grow flowers in myself along with others. Not only that but I can control plant life and could grow flowers anywhere inside or out of someone including myself. So it is very easy to kill with my quirk. My quirk is triggered inside of my lungs whenever I get upset or break down into tears of sadness like when I saw the pictures of me and my brother or when it got really bad when I broke down after leaving my parents. I've learned to control my quirk though without my parents' help.

"You think real fights have timers? GO!" Present Mic shouts. The gates to the field open and everyone rushes in. I was caught off guard but I follow and rush in with the rest. I turn the corner to get away from the other people and run into a three-pointer. Already? A big one? I ask myself. I grow red roses inside it and destroy it from the inside. I run off after it falls to the ground to look for more. I turn the corner again and run into two one-pointers and a two-pointer. I shoot vines from my hands and smash the two one-pointers.

I start to grow flowers to destroy the two-pointer but someone crashes into it. It was a boy and...I recognized him. "Hola there!" He says with the same cheesy smile he had when I met him. "Hello again..." I say. "Not trying to be rude but I got an exam to pass here!" I say running off holding a peace sign up to him from behind me. I smash through some other robots earning me a total of 21 points so far. I stop when I see others running away. Huh? What's up with them? I ask myself. I turn my head to see what they were running off for. It was a giant zero-pointer robot. "What the hell...?" I say aloud quietly.

Tch, child's play, and I don't want these people getting crushed. I say to myself as I set up for an ultimate move. I put my arms together flaring my hands out and focus my energy on my target. My eyes glow and the vine pattern grows on my arms meaning it was working. I look up at my target to see it starting to slow down. I then notice flowers sprouting on it. It stopped and started to fall over. I put my hands down and try to run but my legs are frozen in place. I could start to feel my mind fading from using that much energy but I feel something grab me by the waist.

I was pulled away and I could feel someone hold me by an arm. "Hey, Mi Amor, are you ok?" A voice asks. I gain back my vision and look at the person who saved me. It was the Sero boy I met at the train station. "Y-yeah. I'm fine I just used my quirk a bit too much." I say. "That's it for the exams!" Present Mic says. "I guess that's it." Sero says with a smile. "Yeah I guess so...which means you can let me go now." I say pointing out his arm still around my waist from when he caught me. "Oh! Yeah, sorry about that." He says letting go and rubbing the back of his neck. I go to Recovery Girl's office to have my injures healed and then met my friends by the gate to walk me home.
