"HELLO, LADIES," POPE GREETED WHEN HE WALKED INTO THE WRECK. They were still getting the restaurant ready for dinner, Kie putting some Spackle on the wall while Bree washed some dishes.
The Callaway girl looked up from the sink to grin at him. "Hey, Pope."
"We got another idea for what Redfield means, and we're gonna check it out," he informed them, clapping his hands together and pointing to the door when the two girl didn't move. "So, let's get going."
"You know what, Pope? I think I'm gonna sit this one out. Bree can come, though," Kie told him, glancing at the brunette girl who rolled her eyes.
Bree turned to him with a small smile. Being alone with all of the boys without the Carrera girl was not ideal for her. "I'll hang out here, I guess."
"Um, okay. Have fun then," the Heyward boy muttered in response before walking back out the door. As he exited, they heard him yell to the other boys.
The Callaway girl faced the girl on the ladder, pointing at the door and counting down from three. Once she reached zero, John B came barging in right on schedule with a confused look on his face and his hands in the air.
"I'm gonna leave you two alone," Bree spoke up, breaking the moment of silence and making her way to the door before winking at the boy with a smirk.
He furrowed his eyebrows at her when she did that. "What the hell was that?"
"A wink," she replied with an expression like it was obvious, but he was looking at her like she was absolutely insane or something like that. She wondered what she did to earn that look from him.
"Oh," he mumbled, still in slight shock. "I thought you had something in your eye."
They stared at each other for a moment before she pushed open the door and walked down the stairs toward the car where Pope and JJ were waiting. She climbed into the back with Pope before glancing between the two boys. "Do I wink weird?"
"I don't know," the Heyward boy shrugged.
"Let's see it," the Maybank boy said, turning around in his seat so that he could see her clearly. She winked, and both of them moved their head back slightly in shock. "Oh, my God."
Pope gaped in disbelief and slight horror. "That was scary."
"Please don't ever do that again," the blonde boy added, nodding along to what his friend was saying.
She looked at them in question with her mouth open. How had she never known this before? She had winked at many people before in her life. This was something that people were supposed to tell you when you looked weird doing it. "What's so horrible about it?"
"I'm not sure," Pope told her. "Just stop, though."
"That's gonna be in my nightmares tonight," JJ informed them, leaning back in his seat, and Bree reached up to hit him on the back of the head.
Just then, John B and Kie walked out of The Wreck, so they all assumed that the two had made up. The Routledge boy climbed into the driver's seat while the girl took JJ's place in the passenger's spot. The Maybank sat down next to Bree and Pope in the back. The ride to wherever they were going was almost silent until JJ spoke up.
He asked, "You mind if I just relax on this one? It's been a long day, and a lot of weird stuff's gone down. I'm just gonna lay low. Oh, did you want a hit of this?" He was talking to Pope and referring to the cigarette in his hand.
"I keep the signal clear," the Heyward boy answered, and it sounded like he had said that a million times to the blonde boy, which he probably had.
JJ sighed, "Dude, okay. Do you understand that your problem is that you don't get creative. If you got creative, then—"
"Look, I-I know I was wrong about the lighthouse, all right? And wrong about everything else going on," John B told them, cutting off his best friend. "But I-I was right about one thing. Okay? My dad is trying to tell me something."
The finally arrived, and Bree realized that they were at a graveyard. She had forgotten to ask why the hell they were at a graveyard, but she was sure she would figure it out along the way.
"Hey, come on," the brunette boy beckoned them.
"I'm coming. This place is scary." Kie glared at him and responded with a frustrated voice. "John B, what are we doing?"
He put a finger to his lips and held a lantern up to illuminate the path in front of them so that they could see. The rest of them had flashlights, but none of them were as bright as the lantern. "Sh. Shut up. You know how you're trying to remember a song and can't remember who sings it?"
"Oh, my God. I hate when that happens," the Callaway girl groaned.
"So, Redfield. The whole time, I thought it was a place, right? But it's not a place." he continued after a nod of acknowledgement her way. He finally stopped in front of one of the tombs and lifted the lantern up to reveal the name 'Redfield'. "It's a person."
Bree stared up at the name. "Holy shit."
"Voi-efffing-la," JJ announced to them, and if she wasn't so shocked, the brunette girl might have laughed at it.
"See, my great-great-grandmother Olivia Redfield. That was her maiden name," John B explained to them before moving toward the stone. "Help me with the door. Come on."
Pope nodded, moving over to assist his friend. "All right."
"Go." As he and John B counted down, the rest of them provided crappy moral support.
"Are you pushing?" the Heyward boy questioned in between grunts as he basically threw all of his weight on top of the door in an attempt to get it moving.
The Routledge boy moaned, "Yes, I'm pushing."
"Hang on. I got it," JJ told them, stepping in between the two boys to add his strength into the mix while the two girls hung back and watched them struggle.
"This door is, like, 700 pounds, man," Pope told them, and Bree lifted her flashlight higher in case anyone ever needed out. "It's not gonna budge."
The blonde boy exhaled deeply. "We didn't come this far to get this far, all right? We got this."
The brunette girl was about halfway through rolling her eyes at him when a hissing came from the grave, causing all of them to jump back to stay out of its way.
"A snake!" JJ exclaimed, grabbing Pope's arm and pulling him back. The snake landed on the grass and began slithering away. As the rest of them freaked out, the blonde boy told them, "That's a moccasin, all right. Ye olde Dr. Cottonmouth. Death in tall grass."
"JJ, shut up! Shut up!" Kie ordered when he began barking loudly at the animal. Bree just ran a hand through her hair and rolled her eyes in frustration.
The Heyward boy yelled at him, "You're gonna wake the freaking dead, man."
"Dude, they're afraid of dogs. Everyone knows that, man," the blonde boy defended, and when John B approached the grave again, he grabbed his shoulder. "Wait, hold on. If there's one, there's probably dozens. All around."
"Oh, thanks for that," the Callaway girl groaned out as she suddenly became very paranoid and aware of her surroundings, waiting for another snake to pop out any moment.
Kie muttered, "Stop. You're scaring me." JJ ignored her and just began barking at the grave again.
"Stop barking at the snakes," the Routledge boy told him.
While Pope shushed them, the Maybank boy lifted his hands in surrender. "Just making sure it's clear. Wouldn't want anybody getting bitten a poisonous snake and dying."
"Shut up," the Heyward boy whisper-yelled before turning to his brunette friend. "John, look. We're not gonna get in there, all right? It's not budging. We should probably just go."
"I can get through," Kie announced, looking up at a small hole in the middle of the grave and causing the rest of them to whip their heads in her direction.
"What?" John B questioned, as if he didn't hear her. When he realized what she was implying, he shook his head. "No, no, no, no. You think you're gonna fit through the hole? That hole?"
Bree agreed, "Yeah, I don't think that's the best idea."
"Look, this is about your dad. And honestly, I really don't believe in it, but you deserve to know the truth. I'll do it. Come on," the Carrera girl addressed John B and moved toward the stone wall.
JJ moved next to her, clearing the vines out of her way. "I'll get those—"
"Can you help me with that?" she asked, and the rest of them stepped forward to help her out.
Once they moved all of the vines, leaves, and sticks out of the way, John B nodded at his best friend. "Give her a boost."
"I'm gonna boost you, all right," the blonde informed her, leaning against the wall and putting his hands on his lap for her to step on. "I've seen it in the movies several times. Ready?"
"Remind me what we're looking for," Kie said.
Bree was the one to answer first. "Anything that shouldn't belong in some random old person's grave. No offense, John B. I'm sure your great-great-grandmother was lovely."
"You'll know when you see it," the brunette boy responded after rolling his eyes at the Callaway girl.
She handed her flashlight to Bree after a moment of hesitation, and her friend could practically see her thoughts going a mile a minute. "Hold my flashlight."
"All right, so put your hands right there. All right, on three," JJ walked her through the steps, and she placed her hands on his shoulders before kicking off his knee and grabbing the botton of the hole to hoist herself up. "Okay, never mind. Just forget about three."
"Okay, flashlight?" the Carrera girl called once she was inside.
Passing the object through the hole, Bree felt her grab it. "Yeah, here."
"You alive?" John B asked when she didn't say anything for a moment. The Callaway and the Maybank gave each other a knowing look. "You got, like, a-a heartbeat and everything?"
"So far," she answered.
The Routledge boy nodded, looking down at the ground as his face pressed up against the stone to hear her better. "That's good. That's good."
"Yep," she answered quietly. "Uh...I need some more light."
"Yeah, yeah, here. Yeah, I gotcha." He lifted the lantern so that it shone through the hole, and they all watched Kie's face. She looked like she had just seen a ghost.
JJ furrowed his eyebrows. "Did you find something? Is there gold?"
"Kie, are you okay?" Bree questioned when the Carrera girl still didn't respond. She was beginning to get a little worried.
"Oh, my God."
The all pushed on each other, trying to see what she was staring at. They watched as she pulled out what looked like an envelope out of a crack in the wall. When she shone the light on it, they could see it was a FedEx package, and there was some writing on it.
She passed it through the hole to John B as Pope muttered, "That's not gold."
"Holy shit," the Routledge boy said, looking down at the package in his hands. Bree peeked over his shoulder, and she saw that the 'For Bird' was written on it in Sharpie. "This is from my dad."
"Code red. Code red. Square groupers! Square groupers!" JJ called to them, blowing out a puff of smoke as the sound of an approaching vehicle met their ears.
Kie pushed all of them in the opposite direction. "Go."
"It's the guys who robbed your house," the blonde told his best friend as they started to run,
"Light." They hid behind another one of the graves, and the Carrera girl pointed to all of their flashlights and lanterns, gesturing for them to turn them off. Once all of the lights were off, her, JJ, and Bree poked their heads out to see. "Do you think it's them?"
The Maybank boy responded, "Homie's got a gun."
"Screw this," Kie mumbled, and they all took off running toward the van. Unfortunately, there was a giant gate in their way. Four of them scaled it with ease, but one of them got caught on the top.
Pope yelled, "Guys, I'm stuck."
"Pope, come on!" JJ urged when he saw that the boy wasn't moving with them. Then, he pulled out the gun and pointed it at the boy. "Pope, don't move, okay?"
"What the fuck is wrong with you? Put the gun down!" Bree whisper-yelled, grabbing his arm and pushing it back down to his side while looking at him like he was crazy, which he was.
Kie rushed to help the Heyward boy. "I got you."
"You're gonna rip me," Pope told her as she pulled on him in an attempt to get him down and unstuck. "Wait. You're gonna rip me."
She pulled him down, and his shorts ripped off. As they ran to the Twinkie, JJ laughed, "It's a little Tootsie Roll." Then, he pushed Bree into the back of the vehicle and climbed in after her before plopping down on the floor beside her seat. John B turned around and smiled at them.
"Now let's go see what the hell is in this package."
