16. The Ten Tears.
______
"You wanna sum up what happened yesterday?" Emersyn asked Wanda from the edge of her bed. Across from her, Wanda sat on her desk chair, spinning every few seconds.
"I couldn't understand much," the girl admitted. "They were yelling so much it all overlapped but I think there are still two sides. One who wants you to try the ambrosia and the other that wants you to wait until they find another way."
Emersyn nodded. "I figured." She looked at her fingers as she spun her ring between her finger tips. "What did Bucky say?"
"Not much. He said it should be your decision. That they shouldn't be making it for you and then he left."
"What do you think?"
"I think I feel like a terrible person and that I will do anything to bring you back to life."
Emersyn sat in silence for a moment before Wanda spoke up again. "I think you deserve to live, Emersyn. I think you are one of the only good people on this shitty earth and now that I know you and have formed my own opinions on you I know that you didn't deserve to die. You didn't deserve any of the crappy things that have happened to you and I am so sorry for making you re-live them."
As the witch got up to leave the room, Emersyn stopped her by grabbing her wrist. Looking up at the girl with sad eyes, she stood up before wrapping her arms around Wanda's waist.
Wanda gasped silently, not expecting the hug but after the shock of it, she slowly wound her arms around Emersyn's back.
Wanda waited till Emersyn pulled away before letting go of her. "You give really nice hugs," she said softly with a small smile.
The Stark laughed softly, "It's the boobs."
For the first time since the fight, Wanda laughed a genuine laugh.
"Can I be honest with you?" Emersyn asked suddenly. Wanda nodded, slightly confused. "I'm scared shitless of what may happen but I think I made up my mind."
As Emersyn confessed her discussion, Wanda stood before her, holding her hands as she nodded, taking in her every word.
"Okay," she said as the words slowly stopped leaving Emersyn's lips. "We'll do that and if people don't like it, it's too bad. This is your decision, Emersyn. No one else's."
"Are you sure?" Steve asked, Bucky and Tony by his side as they sat on one of the many couches in the common room on the 87th floor.
Emersyn picked up the whiteboard once again. 'Yes,' she wrote in her messy script before turning it around for the men to read.
She watched as the three men sent glances at each other.
"But are you really sure?" Tony asked after a moment, earning an eye roll from Bucky.
Emersyn drew a line under the word yes before turning it around again.
"But like, are you really really sure?"
Emersyn exhaled hard, "For fucks sake." Turning the board back to her, she wrote again.
Bucky stood, moving over to sit beside the floating whiteboard so he could read over her shoulder and let out a choked laugh as he read the words. "She says 'yes, you fucking morons. Now shut the fuck up."
While Steve sighed at the use of language, Tony cracked a smile.
Standing up Steve glanced down at the floating whiteboard. "I'll get Thor. Emersyn, you should probably get dressed."
"Fuck you," Emersyn muttered as she stood up, putting the whiteboard in Bucky's lap as she walked out of the room. "Always telling me what to do. Such a dick. Fucking men suck."
After reluctantly putting on pants that weren't hello kitty style, Emersyn joined the team on the helipad.
Thor smiled as he watched the Stark walk toward them. "Ah, Lady Emersyn, you look as beautiful as the sun."
Grinning, Emersyn tipped her head to the side as he grasped her hand and kissed her knuckles.
Behind her, Steve sighed, "Thor."
Grinning, Thor's eyes moved to see the soldier standing not far from Emersyn, "Relax, Captain. I already have my sights on someone else."
Stopping Steve's sulk fest, Bucky inched closer, "Are you sure you don't want us to come, Syn?"
Thor looked down at the Stark. "If this goes wrong, I don't want them to see it," she told him, voice somewhat unsteady. His eyes met Bucky's once again, "She says 'she will be fine without you and to calm your tits'."
Emersyn laughed softly, "You're very good at coming up with things I would say."
Wrapping his arm around her shoulder and leading her towards the middle of the helipad. Grasping her shoulder tightly, he gripped his hammer with his freehand and held it above them. "Hold on, Lady Emersyn."
Hugging the god tightly, they were soon engulfed in a stream of colours before they quickly disappeared from the Avengers' eyes.
Olympus was a beautiful place; it had to be, it was the home of the gods after all. Emersyn had only been there once before but had been stuck waiting on the sidelines while Thor had been there many times and yet, both of them had lost their breath at the sight of the architecture, greenery and people.
Those who had the pleasure of living in Olympus were said to be the most beautiful beings to ever exist. Emersyn knew it was true as she watched men and women walk past her, their smiles stealing her breath and capturing her mind.
Thor, who was somewhat used to the Olympians' godly charms, shook his head and gently led Emersyn through the crowds until reaching a temple made of marble. Walking through the large double doors that had opened by themselves, a garden was revealed, one with a large fountain of glowing water.
Surrounding the fountain lay flowers of all kinds, terrestrial and extraterrestrial. Their colours were magnificent, some Emersyn couldn't even recognize, colours she didn't even know existed before this very moment.
As the water fell from the top of the fountain to the pool beneath it, small rainbows appeared in the mist that followed.
"I didn't expect visitors," a voice spoke from behind them, stealing both their attention from the mesmerizing scenery.
While Thor smiled at the woman that slowly approached them, Emersyn's eyes stayed wide, the mesmerized look never leaving her face at the pure beauty of the goddess.
The woman chuckled softly. The sound resembles the most beautiful melody to exist. "A mortal. Why would you bring such a thing to my temple, Thor?"
Thor straightened his shoulders as he placed a hand on Emersyn's shoulder, "This is my friend, Hebe. She's family. She needs some help."
Hebe looked at Emersyn and scoured down the girl's body before they moved back to Thor, "She's dead. Killed by magic created by one of the universe' stones which is why she is stuck between life and death. What do you wish me to do?"
"I thought that maybe you would be able to save her? Bring her back to life with your gifts."
Hebe laughed again, "And why would I do that? Let alone for a mortal. They are a waste of time."
"Emersyn is differentโ"
She interrupted him, "Emersyn? Is that her name?"
"Yes."
"I see. I can give her what you want." A mischievous smile took place on her lips, "That is, if she can break through the spell."
"The spell?" Thor asked; though he had been prepared for a game. The gods always wanted something in return for a favour.
"When mortals come across gods and goddesses in their natural habitat such as this place, they are set in a state of love, such powerful love that their mind is taken over, unable to think for themselves. If the young Emersyn Stark can break through and ask me herself for my help, then she may receive it."
Hebe stepped back, her smile never leaving her lips as she walked past pillars of marble, "I will be at the edge. If she manages to break through, come find me."
As the woman disappeared, Thor turned back to face Emersyn and sighed at the sight of her lovesick eyes. "This is going to be more difficult than I thought," he muttered to himself.
"Emersyn, come on," Thor pressed as he shook Emersyn's shoulders. It had been twenty minutes since Hebe had left the pair. Twenty minutes of Thor shaking Emersyn's shoulders while shouting her name.
Nothing he did, however, seemed to knock her out of her haze. It was like she couldn't hear him. Instead, looking at him, her eyes held that same mesmerized look that she had held while looking at Hebe and the other gods she had passed on their travels to the temple.
"You need to snap out of it. I can't help you if you are stuck in this daze, Emersyn."
Shaking her, he let out a tired breath before his eyes lightened and he moved his outstretched hand and straightened it, "I will slap you if you don't wake up. And it will hurt... Real bad."
Her eyes stayed in their lustful state, doe and wide as the warm wind swept through her hair, the golden sun revealing bits of red from the last time she had Natasha dye it for her.
His lips pursed as he attempted to recall the stories his mother had taught him during his early years of training. Mortals weren't spoken much of at the time, but bits and pieces were mentioned. Especially after Eros had struck both a human and god with one of his arrows which left them in a forced love till the human inevitably died.
As he looked around the garden, a memory finally found him in the form of his mothers voice. 'If a human is to come in contact with a godly being or object, it will break them out of their haze.'
Thor didn't know how he could have forgotten something so simple. When he was a child, he had never thought learning about something so little would ever be so important.
Looking around once more, he noticed a set of golden chalices sitting on one of the ledges by the fountain and quickly walked over to it before letting the water from the fountain slowly drip into the chalice, slowly filling it to the top.
Carefully, he carried the chalice back to Emersyn who had yet to take her eyes off of his form. Grabbing her hand, he placed it in her hand and moved it toward her lips. As the ridge of the golden chalice reached her lower lip, she looked up at him.
"Open your mouth," he told her.
She complied. And as the shining liquid fell past her lips, down her throat, bits of it dripping down her chin, trailing down her neck, her eyes never strayed from his.
As the chalice slowly emptied, he pulled it away from her lips and set it on the ground before tugging his sleeve up to his hand before wiping away the bits of water that had fallen from her lips.
"Still with me?" he asked.
There was no answer. Emersyn's eyes still held a lovesick look while her lips stayed unmoving.
His chest deflated in defeat as a breath left his nose. "I was certain that would work."
After a moment of staring at the Stark, he let out another sigh as his mind turned to the other portion of his mothers words.
"If a human is to come in contact with a godly being..." his voice trailed off, eyebrows furrowing as his lips pursed. "I apologize, Lady Emersyn. I am only doing this to help you. I would never do this under any different circumstance."
Emersyn's eyes didn't change. No looks of distress or discomfort. Only love.
It was false love. Thor knew that as he moved his hand to gently hold the back of her neck before leaning over slightly and connecting his lips with hers. His lips took in her bottom lip, biting it softly, emitting a gasp from Emersyn. As her lips parted in ecstasy, he took his chance to slip his tongue past them.
As his lips moved against hers, Emersyn felt her mind slowly come back to her. Her thoughts were cloudy and distant as she felt Thor's hands gently holding her head, his thumb slowly rubbing calming circles on her cheek, an apology with every touch.
She could feel it on his lips as her mind cleared. The anguish; the guilt.
Opening her eyes, she blinked hard and her lips froze. Feeling her freeze, no longer reciprocating his touch, Thor quickly pulled away.
"Lady Emersyn?" he asked.
Her eyebrows were furrowed as she looked up at the god. "Thor, I know I'm hot but I'm not into you in that way. Not trying to hurt your feelings or anything, but your brother is hotter."
Thor laughed, earning an even more confused look to appear on the Starks' face. "Usually when I turn someone down they start crying. I've never had someone laugh before."
"I'm not in love with you, Emersyn. You were under a love spell."
"You kissed me while I was under a love spell?" Emersyn asked, her voice slightly raised though she held a sarcastic tone.
"I apologize. It was never my wanting to make you uncomfortable. I believed it was the only way to wake you."
Emersyn grinned suddenly as her hand came up and gently nudged his shoulder, "I'm messing with you, big guy. Thank you."
"Of course. Though, I don't think it would be wise of us to inform Mr. Rogers of this." He paused, "Or anyone else for that matter. I believe the teasing would be endless."
Emersyn grinned, "It will be our little secret..."
"We should head to the edge now. Hebe will be awaiting us."
"The edge?" Emersyn asked as they began to walk out of the beautiful temple. As she swallowed, she looked up at the god, "Why does my mouth taste so good? Did you drug me?"
Thor chuckled, "That would be the water. I gave you a drink of it before, thinking it would wake you. It's infused with the energy of rainbows. A gift from Iris."
"I just drank rainbows?"
"Precisely."
Emersyn's eyes widened, "I just drank rainbows? Oh my god. That is awesome. Am I gonna become a unicorn? Do you think I can fly now?"
"I don't think you should embarrass yourself with trying," Thor advised her, glancing around and seeing people sending them strange looks.
Emersyn's eyes moved slightly and caught a man who had been watching her, "What are you looking at, Hercules' knock off brother?"
The man looked at her strangely, "I am Hercules."
"Oh shit." She glanced up at Thor and saw him holding back a smile. "My apologies, Mr. Hercules. I seem to have drank a tad too much. I seem to still be woozy. I'm deeply sorry if I have offended you."
Hercules grinned, "It's nothing. A friend of Thor's is always a friend of mine. It's lovely to see you, Emersyn Stark."
As he walked away and Thor continued to lead her toward the edge, Emersyn frowned, "Why did he know my name?"
Thor's hand held her shoulder as they moved off of the cobblestone and began to walk through the drifts of sand. "Some gods have more knowledge than others. Some enjoy learning about the mortal worlds."
Emersyn hummed, "I guess that makes sense. You never answered me earlier; what is the edge?"
"The edge is a beach of sorts," Thor told her, his hands moving to her waist before hoisting her up on the top of a large rock before following after her and continuing their walk. "It is where the land and ocean meet. It is also the second closest place to the center of the universe."
"The second?"
"Vormyr is the closest."
"Have you been there?"
"No," Thor told her. "And I hope none of us will ever have to."
"Why is that?" she asked but was cut off as they reached an isle of stones and cracked pillars. Glancing around, watching as the waves crashed against the large rocks, the scent of salty water filled her nose. It wasn't strong, instead, it was more calming. She could feel the soft spray of water mist against her face as a particularly large wave crashed against the rocks beneath them.
"I see you've made it," A woman's voice spoke from behind them.
This time, when Emersyn turned around, her mind stayed clear as a woman came into her sight.
She smiled, "Ah, I see the lovely Emersyn is much more than looks. You have a strong mind. My name is Hebe. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
Emersyn's dark eyes cast along the woman's face, "Hi? I'm sorry, I don't know what to say."
Hebe grinned, "I have that effect on people. Thor informed me that you wish to be brought back to the world of the living โ is that true?"
Emersyn nodded, "Yes. I know it's dangerous and there is a big possibility it won't work but on the slim chance it does work, I need to be alive. I need my family."
The goddess' head tilted as she stared at Emersyn with an unreadable expression. "Thor, you may leave us. I need a moment alone with the mortal."
Emersyn felt as Thor's hand slowly left hers before his body retreated into the drifts of rocks and sand.
"What is it you wanted to say?" Emersyn asked.
"I sense a tear in your heart," Hebe told her. "What happened, child?"
"Nothing."
Hebe chuckled, "Mortals can't lie here. We can sense it when you are lying."
"I don't know what you're talking about. I really don't know what you mean. I don't have a tear in my heart."
"You're right. You have multiple. Ten, to be precise โ though some have not yet formed... it's as if they have yet to have happened. Four great tragedies. Tell me, what is this first?"
Emersyn felt compelled to tell her the truth. "My mother. She used to hurt me. If I spoke too soon, too loudly she would hit me. I would be kicked out for days on end, spent nights on the streets. When I was four she overdosed and I found her on the couch with a needle in her arm. I thought she was dead. I wish she had been."
"I see. And the second?"
"I was captured by Hydra when I was twenty. The days blended together. I didn't even know how long I had been there until I heard a doctor speaking to a guard about me. It had been seven months. They would torture me for nothing but fun. They didn't want anything from me. They had their assassin drown me, cut me, break my bones..."
"And you were made to relieve that. Which, as humans from your world would say, poured salt on the wound. Reliving it would be the third tear. And the fourth would be dying, being made to think that you were stuck watching the world as if it were a movie. Watching as your family moved on, gained new lives and you slowly became a distant memory."
Emersyn stayed silent, her eyes drifting down to the ground beneath her.
Her hand moved to lift Emersyn's face, "Child, you will face great loss in your life. But in the end, you will find that life is worth living, for however long you may live it. And with that, I grant you back your life." Hebe pulled out a small pouch from the pocket of her dress, "This is ambrosia. If you eat it, it will grant you a second chance. I cannot promise anything, however, as it is not meant for a human. But, if it does succeed in giving you life, use your time wisely. Spend it with those who matter most. You never know when they will disappear."ย ย
