EIGHT | THE AVENGERS ON A BUDGET
"Don't smack yourself, you look stupid," Tate muttered as Diego continued driving, it was late night after many hours, and everyone had fallen asleep other than Five, Tate, and Diego.
"You're sure, you're not sleepy?" Five asked his wife who was surprisingly not tired. "Not at all," Tate turned to see everyone was asleep except Lila was pretending to be asleep.
"Hmm... they're out," Tate lied before Lila mouthed a thank you to her mouth. Tate smiled and turned back around to the boys.
"Thank you," Diego said, causing Tate to smile softly. "For what?" Tate leaned on the seat. "For reassuring me," Diego responded, causing Five to turn to Tate. "What did you do?" Five asked, even though he already knew the reason.
"I think she's cheating on me," Diego informed Five, causing Five to turn his head at Diego. "Lila," Diego clarified. "Oh I thought it was your other wife, Barbra," Tate joked lightheartedly. "Does he know?" Diego asked Tate before she shook her head.
"No," She lied, Five knew it all but Tate wanted to see if Diego would tell Five too. "She goes places at night," Diego continued in a quiet voice. "She goes to places and she lies about it," Diego leaned over to the married couple.
"You know, she's got that book club," Five reminded, covering for Lila. "Yeah, what is it? A book club for two, Five?" Diego asked as he focused on the road ahead. "What are you talking about?" Five asked, turning to his head.
"Last night, I followed her," Diego started as Tate put her legs on the dashboard. "You didn't say anything about being comfortable," Tate said before Diego rolled his eyes. "She was in some cafรฉ with some guy," Diego confessed, causing Five to listen closer.
"Some Greek-looking son of a bitch with a creepy mustache," Diego described Five's disguise look from the night before, causing Tate to look at Five with a frown. "The mustache was creepy?" Five asked his brother who nodded. "Oh yeah," Diego answered, his grip on the steering wheel tightening.
"Sleazy as hell. Just pencil-thin, you know what I mean?" Diego questioned his brother and sister. "Diego, whatever this is, trust me... it's nothing," Five reassured his brother as Tate nodded in agreement. "Lila wouldn't cheat on you," Tate repeated before she yawned.
"Take your rest, love," Five brushed a strand of hair behind Tate's hair. "I'm fine," Tate lied before crossing her arms. "You got the house, you got a family, only an idiot can throw that away," Tate said before Five smiled softly.
"Lila is no idiot," Five added, causing Diego to sigh. "So am I supposed to just ignore it? Say nothing?" Diego asked his siblings for advice. "That would be correct, bury it," Five answered before Tate nudged Five for the incorrect advice.
"Deep," Five emphasized as Tate turned around to see Lila's eyes were opened. "Cover that shit with concrete," Tate added, going on with Five's advice. "You're a good brother and you're an amazing sister," Diego smiled at the couple, causing the two to return the smile.
"How are you actually not tired at all?" Five turned to his wife who was twirling her hair. "Got used to it," Tate answered before she realized she said something she shouldn't have said. "What do you mean, you got used to it?" Five asked with a worried look.
"I..." Tate trailed off, debating on whether to tell Five the reason why. "Tate?" Diego joined in, asking the young girl about her sleeping habits. "I... I've been waiting for you to come home these last few weeks so I didn't sleep until you came back," Tate confessed, causing Five to smile softly.
"You don't have to do that... you know?" Five kissed his wife's forehead before Tate smiled proudly. "I don't mind..." Tate smiled, causing Five to pat her head. "Go to sleep, darling," Five whispered before Tate leaned on the seat.
"No Sy Grossman listed, No Jennifer Grossman either," Five informed the group as he stepped out of the phone booth. "Well, we'll have a look around, if she's here, we'll find her," Allison reassured everyone while Lila was figuring out her laser eyes beside Tate.
"This is why you do recon, assholes," Ben stated before turning everyone to stare at him. "Recon? Why are you saying "recon"? We're not the A-team," Viktor mocked at Ben's attempt at teamwork. "Oh really?" Ben asked. "Shit, you fooled me," Ben retorted before Diego spoke up.
"At least we have a team," Diego said, turning to Ben. "Hell's that supposed to mean?" Ben questioned, glaring at Diego. "Okay, everybody. Look over here and smile!" Luther held up a camera. "What?" Allison asked, staring at him. "No!" Tate shouted, not in the mood to take a picture.
"Smile!" Luther said before everyone closed their eyes, except Ben and Diego who grinned at the camera, Tate who raised her middle finger at the camera while Five's arm wrapped around her waist, and Allison who avoided the camera lens.
"You know what? Screw this!" Ben yelled before letting go of Diego. "One or two of you are fine, but all of you together?" Ben said before Tate let go of Five's hand. "You're a bunch of drooling, stunted toddlers," Ben mentioned before walking off.
"Where are you going?" Tate asked, wanting to follow him before Five pulled her back. "I'm going back to my penthouse downtown," Ben answered before Luther stopped him. "Ben, that penthouse belongs to the federal government now," Luther reminded his brother as Ben continued walking.
"Shut the hell up, Luther," Ben yelled, causing Tate to speak up. "All right," Luther accepted the insult as one of Ben's tentacles sticking out of his body. "Go fuck yourself!" Tate yelled, defending Luther.
"Poor Ben-arino," Klaus said as everyone laughed at Ben's tail sticking out of his jacket. "We're better off without him!" Diego yelled from behind the car. "He's right," Viktor agreed, his hand stuck in his pocket. "All right, everyone. Let's split up and look for this girl,"ย Luther decided, causing the group to split themselves into two groups.
"Let's be discreet," Luther reminded while Diego strapped in his spandex suit, struggling to buckle the last part. "If you find her or the dry cleaner guy, don't do anything on your own," Luther mentioned before Diego walked out.
"Let's just wait for the team," Luther said. "I can't feel my legs," Diego muttered, walking back to the group. "Oh sweet Jesus," Allison said as everyone watched Diego with his old outfit on. "Dude, really?" Tate asked her brother, pointing to the tight-fitting outfit.
"Like a glove," Diego lied, adjusting his pants. Luther cringed at the sad sight while Klaus spoke up, "Sure, like OJ's glove," Klaus teased before Tate started laughing. "God you look stupid, and I'm so fucking tired and in pain that shouldn't be laughing but I am,"
Everyone tried holding it in their laughter as Diego struggled to walk towards the group. "Here, you're in charge of Wanda," Diego tossed Klaus the car keys before Klaus dodged it immediately, leaping backward.
"Don't go anywhere without us," Diego ordered before walking off. "You do realize you're waddling? Yeah?" Allison asked her brother. "Yeah, just trying to walk like you," Diego said as Tate rolled her eyes, hugging her jacket closer to herself.
"Hey," Allison kicked Diego's stomach, offended by the comment. "Let's just find this Jennifer and get out of here," Allison lowered her leg. "Use one of those knives..." Luther muttered before Klaus cheered them on.
"Good luck, don't get killed,"
