CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT—
it ends with us.
"Holy shit, was that a motorcycle!" Harvest ran down the stairs when she saw her siblings through the window.
"What happened?" Nina was right behind her. "Where's Rufus and Elle?"
"They're safe." Kinsey panted.
"Did you get the key?" Bode pushed on as Kinsey held its up. "Cool, what does it do?"
"I repeat, was that a motorcycle?" the redhead from the steps gapped.
"Whatever you draw with it, it becomes a real version of that thing." Kinsey explained as Nina gapped.
"Draw me a dog!" Logan announced. "No, a cat."
"Draw me bigger boobs." Harvest smiled.
"Maybe like a door instead?" Kinsey suggested toward the beaming pair. "Or a motorcycle."
"I guess that works too." she shrugged.
"I like your boobs." Logan reassured her in a whisper.
"You guys drew a motorcycle and it came to life?" Bode gapped at his oldest siblings.
"Are you guys hurt?" Nina looked the two over.
"We got the key, but Gordie didn't make it." Tyler spoke through pants, trying to catch his breath. "Gideon killed him."
"Oh my god." Nina looked sick.
"Wait, where's Sam?" Bode looked around, realizing they were missing someone. Harvest looked to the window to see if he'd been outside, not wanting to come in from how her and her Mom react to him the first time.
"He was trapped inside when Gordie died." Kinsey frowned in the slightest.
"Wait, what?" Bode was the most upset. Harvest felt bad that she didn't feel much on the matter. She never would wish death on someone, anyone but Gabe that was, but she couldn't find the energy to cry over a boy that took her father from her. Even if it wasn't entirely his fault. "What does that mean?"
"That he's dead?" Harvey asked, but she knew it had to have been the truth.
"But we don't have a lot of time!" Tyler looked toward the doors. "Gideons on his way here right now."
"Did you get the chest open?" Kinsey hurried over to it.
"Nothing was working." Logan informed her as they walked over. "Literally nothing."
"It's protected by magic." Nina went on to explain.
Kinsey nodded her head. "Okay, if we can't get the Alpha key then we have to find a way to get Gideon in the well house."
"We tried that, he knows it's a trap." Harvest shook her head as she listened to her sisters words.
"Or maybe we can use the creation key to draw some weapons." Tyler suggested as his eyes darted between each of them.
"Or both!" Bode looked up, confirming it for them.
"I hate this plan." Logan whispered to Harvest in the night. "Bitch, I am so scared."
"Bitch, don't be scared." she mocked him back with a shake of her head. "Ready?"
"As ready as I can." he cocked the gun after she had, the pair leaning off Key House balcony and shooting toward Gideon as he stood before the well house. Bode used a bulldozer to push him closer, Gideon's hands pushing against the gate to fight it. Harvest shot him in the hand as he yanked back, but came back stronger. The machine sparked, dropping Gideon as he picked up a piece of the claw, slamming it into the well house.
"Tyler!" Harvey's yelled for fear of her brother, not being able to see him through the rock of the well house.
"Look!" Logan pointed, seeing Bode and Tyler running toward the doors. The two ran down the stairs to meet them.
"We gotta get out of here!" he announced.
"Give me the key." Kinsey turned to Tyler quickly, being met with confusion. "The creation key! Give it to me."
Tyler hesitated before handed it to her, all watched as she drew a key door into the chest. Bodes eyebrows shot up. "Woah, very amazing key."
Kinsey reached her hand inside and pulled out the Alpha key. Harvest smiled. "Yeah!"
The front doors were kicked open by Gideon, Logan used his arm to guard Harvest as the big man grabbed Kinsey and yanked her toward the blue portray. "Kinsey!"
"The key, or she dies!" Gideon threatened, holding her over it and looking back at the remaining five. Kinsey stabbed him with the key as he gave a yelp of pain.
"No." she stared up at him. "You fucking die!"
He tried to shove her in, Harvest felt her heart fell. "Kinsey!"
Tyler ran forward as they followed, all grasping hold of Gideon to try and prey him off Kinsey. Harvest reached up, digging her fingers into Gideon's eye so hard that it caused his grip to loosen on Kinsey, Tyler and Bode pulled her away as Logan did the same with Harvest, blood staining her thumbs. Nina shoved him hard, dropping him into the portal before it shrunk in size.
"Holy shit!" Logan laughed and panted all at once, hugging everyone. "Lockes, i'm so happy to know you all."
"He's gone." Bode smiled. "It worked."
"Yeah, but why'd it shrink?" Harvest rubbed her chest to catch her breath. "You see it?"
"The portal got smaller." Tyler agreed with his sister as he eyed it.
"Why would that happen?" Nina stared, like she was bracing herself.
"Two keys went in with him." Tyler gave a realization look, pulling the one from his pocket and tossing it in, against Bodes will. It shrunk again, confirming his theory.
"You're right." Kinsey nodded. "Tossing the key in made it smaller."
Harvest yanked the water key from her neck, throwing it in instantly and watching as the portal closed up more. Logan rubbed her shoulders from where he stood behind her.
"You can't just throw away keys without consultation." Bode scolded Tyler and Harvest, clearly more upset that they were just throwing away the magic more then anything else.
It was clear what they needed to do as the remaining keys rested on the kitchen table now.
"We can build it up, or build another door." Bode was looking for anything to keep the keys.
"That didn't work the first time around, did it?" Kinsey pointed out, looking at Tyler.
"For me, I really don't think I can handle Dodge possibly coming back again." Harvest admitted as she chewed on her lips. "Especially if she uses someone else's body, like she did Bodes. If this is the only way...then I agree."
"Me too." Logan nodded with a deep inhale. "I think we faced enough trauma, don't you think?"
"We can build a stronger door!" Bode tried to make the matter better. "One that no one can get into."
"Look, I, um-think we all know what needs to happen here." Tyler looked around the dim kitchen. "We need to give up the keys. Throw them all back from where they came from."
"But they've helped us so much." Bode gave a defeated look.
"Have they?" Kinsey asked honestly. "I mean, they're the reason Dads gone. And so many other people. Eden, Jackie, Jo. Gordie."
Harvest liked to imagine how she'd turned out if Gabe, created through keys, never came into her life.
"And all the original keepers of the keys." Tyler agreed with his sister. "Gideon was right about one thing. The keys: they never belonged to us."
Bode looked to Nina hopefully. "Mom, come on. We can't just give up magic."
"I'm sorry, bud." she rubbed his arm. "But, I agree. The keys aren't good. They make people do terrible things. They corrupt people. They cause harm and pain. Even your father. He couldn't resist them. I think Tyler's right."
"Me too." Kinsey pushed off the counter, Harvest nodded her head to show her agreement.
"So, i'm out voted then." Bode took a seat with a frown on his face.
"I was hoping this could be a unanimous thing." Tyler pointed out.
"Bode, what is it you want from the keys?" Kinsey tried to understand.
"Just one more thing." he looked up. "If we can do that, then i'll agree."
He picked up one of the keys.
Harvest didn't go, she sat outside of the door that lead her to her father.
Logan frowned as he walked over and sat infront of her. "Hey."
She glanced up. "Hey."
"If you really don't wanna go in there, I would never make you." he nodded his head at her knowingly as she sniffled, staring at his face as he offered her a smile. "But, you love your Dad so much. I know you would do anything to see him again, and this is your chance."
"But it's gonna be too hard to leave." she admitted, he wipped a tear for her eye. "I just don't think I can."
Logan hesitated. "Do you remember when you told me that your Dad was the only person to get you? That he understood you and didn't push you to be different?"
She nodded as he smiled at her. "That's how I feel with you. I mean, this world is just so loud, and it's so terrifying but when i'm with you, everything seems okay. You understand me. And I know, god forbid if ever happens, but if i'd have lost you, i'd want to be able to see the person that made me feel whole just one more time."
A sad smile spread across her face, resting her forehead against his. "When I get back, and after we throw the keys away, and after the Splattering premiere, what if we take a gap year? Or just a couple months, at least. Go somewhere, just get away."
"Yeah, that sounds good." he laughed. "I know you love the mountains the most. We've got a place up there, plenty of space for you to finish your writing. Plenty of space for me to...do whatever I do."
It made her laugh as he smiled. "As soon as you get back. I think we can skip the premier, don't you?"
She didn't answer, jusr leaned in and kissed him as her hands held onto his face. It lasted for a few seconds before she stood up, bracing herself for her father to be on the other side. Her gaze shifted back when she opened it, standing in the doorway of key house and her old home. "You're wrong."
"What?" he gave her a questionable look.
"I don't love the mountains the most." she shook her head. "I love you the most."
Then, she walked into the door. And when she came back, he said the same thing, and they kept the promises they'd made. As they always would, because it was always gonna be them. Even if they ended up with the wrong person at first, even if it took them longer then most to finally get together, it would always lead back to Logan and Harvest.
