iii. the island
AS THE HELICOPTER NEARED THE ISLAND, THE WHOLE CHOPPER BEGAN TO SHAKE. Out of sheer instinct, Robyn clasped onto Ian's forearm for ease. She was fine with transport and hardly ever got travel sick, but she hated landing. The turbulence made her ears ring and stomach churn.
Ian smirked at the action, knowing that her friend, Jimmy, had seen. Although it was blatantly obvious to Ian that Jimmy was attracted to Robyn, the blonde woman was clueless. So, this made Ian's next move all the more fun.
He gingerly wrapped an arm around Robyn's shoulder, his thumb rubbing the rough material of the flannel that laid over her upper arm. "It - It's alright, Robbie. I, uh, I got you," he whispered near her ear. A shiver ran down Robyn's back as she felt his hot breath hit her ear.
The blonde Australian didn't know what to say so instead she focused on buckling her seat belt quickly. Everyone else followed suit, however, Alan seemed to be having a difficult time with his. In his hands, he held two of the same pieces. As Ellie and John were helping Alan with his belt, Robyn and Ian couldn't help but let out a few quiet chuckles at the scene.
Seemingly having enough of the chaos, Alan simply tied the two ends together around his waist. With a smirk, he looked up and shrugged smugly.
"You handled that beautifully, Alan," Robyn snorted, covering her grin.
John had warned us that the chopper needed to land quickly due to bad wind shears, but it was still too fast for Robyn's liking. She had only then noticed that Ian still had his arm around her shoulders. The blonde felt an ungodly churn occur in her stomach just as the helicopter safely landed.
"Oh, God," Robyn muttered.
"You alright, Robyn?" Ellie leaned forward, placing a hand on her friend's knee.
"I think I'm going to be sick," Robyn spoke, unbuckling her belt immediately and practically sprinted out of the copter as soon as the doors were clicked open. Robyn ran towards the edge of the trees and hunched over. Ellie ran over her to hold her hair up and rub her back.
It was terribly grotesque how Robyn hurled the contents of her stomach, how she heaved up any sort of burning acid that rose her throat. It was disgusting but she needed to do it.
"You ok, sweetie?" The younger blonde helped the older one up onto steady legs. "Hey, at least the ride back won't be as bumpy, right?" Ellie joked, rubbing Robyn's back as they turned around.
What Robyn was hoping for a bit of privacy as she vomited, but the sight in front of her made her realise she didn't get that. All 5 men were standing a few feet away from Ellie and Robyn, many of their faces etched with a mixture of dread, disgust and sympathy. Yet, Ian was chuckling.
"Don't tell me they watched?" Robyn grimaced towards her older friend.
"Afraid so," Ellie winced. She knew if it were the other way round, she wouldn't want the eyes of 5 spying men watching her empty her stomach.
Robyn whined as she noticed Ian's laughter. "Is something funny, Malcolm?"
Ian choked on his laughs as he tried to speak. "Uh, no, no. Just, just that was incredibly hilarious for some reason," He laughed once more.
Robyn and Ellie couldn't help but giggle too. Ian's laughter was certainly contagious.
John shook his head with a smile and guided the group towards two beige and red jeeps - both had two vibrant logos printed on the doors. 'Jurassic Park'.
Ellie, Alan, Robyn and Ian hopped into the first jeep, leaving Jimmy, John and Gennaro to get into the second. Ellie was sat in the passenger's seat next to the driver, while Robyn was squeezed between Alan and Ian. The jeeps drove off down a bumpy track. All four of the doctors were staring at the scenery in awe. The resort that John had leased was enormous and full of nature. Being a zoologist, Robyn had a forever growing admiration for nature. It was what carries life through the world and it was something that needed to be treasured.
Robyn gazed at the tall green trees surrounding them. "So, Dr Morris, what, uh, do you do?"
Robyn grinned. She loved talking about her work. "Here we go..." She heard Alan mumble whilst Ellie giggled, knowing that Robyn goes on a tangent when her work is brought up.
Robyn playfully whacked Alan's shoulder before turning back to Ian with a smile. "Well, I'm a palaeontologist, a photographer and a zoologist. Oh, and sometimes I do lectures at universities, but it's not a full-time thing," Robyn briefly spoke, sparring Alan and Ellie the full details for what must've been the hundredth time.
Ian whistled, his arm propped up on the headrest behind Robyn. "That's a hefty, uh, hefty CV, got there, Robbie."
Robyn nodded. "Yeah, you're right," She softly spoke. "I barely get any free time because of it though," she chuckled.
Ian raised a brow. "Really? A young girl like you with no free time? I refuse to believe that. I bet you secretly miss some of those lectures to go on a night out, don't you?"
Robyn snorted. "I wish. I haven't been on a night out in nearly a decade," She hadn't been counting the days, but she knew the last time she went out was in her first year of university. After that, she dedicated her whole life to her work. Some would argue that is incredibly unhealthy to be so attached to your work, but Robyn loved it to the point where she couldn't get enough of it.
"A decade?!" Ian smirked. "You're telling me your, uh, last night out was when you were about 9? Sure thing, sweetcheeks."
Robyn held a hand to her chest, a blush blossoming over her face. "I'm flattered you think I'm 19, Ian, honestly. That's got to be the best compliment I've ever received," she laughed. "I'm 30. 31 in October."
Ian tilted his head. "You, uh, you don't look a day of 20, Robbie," Ian complimented. Robyn blushed once more, causing Ian to smirk further. "So this lack of free time, hey? Does that mean you don't have, uh, have a boyfriend or a husband?"
Robyn chuckled once more. "No. Do you?"
Ian placed a hand on his chest with a smile. "Nah, I don't have, uh, a boyfriend either."
She clasped a hand over mouth to capture the loud laugh to threatened to seep through her fingers, resulting in an odd mixture of muffled giggles and snorts. Ian laughed with her, his gaze watching her profile carefully.
Before either could continue their conversation, they heard John yell from the jeep behind them. The vehicle came to a smooth stop and Robyn looked around their surroundings.
She turned to her right and her jaw hung open. She lazily slapped Ian's shoulder to get his attention, not taking her eyes away from the sight in front of her. "Is that...real?" She whispered, still in disbelief.
Ian didn't answer, clearly in a state of shock himself. Alan' reaction was an answer enough. He stood up in his seat and removed his hat and sunglasses to get a clearer view of the spectacle before them. All three scientists stumbled out of the car, none daring to stop staring at the creature before them.
"Did we die in that helicopter ride?" Robyn heard Jimmy whisper from behind her. Robyn held out her wrist to her best friend, indicating for him to check her pulse. Without looking, he placed two fingers over her veins and felt her escalated heartbeat. "Nope. I guess not."
"It's a dinosaur," Alan managed to observe.
"A brachiosaurus," Robyn added with a breathy laugh. "How is it real? That's a brachiosaurus!" She gushed excitedly. "Jimmy! That's a brachiosaurus!" She shook her best friend's shoulders.
Jimmy laughed with a nod. "Yes," It was all Jimmy could muster. He was in utter shock.
"We could tear up the rule book on cold-bloodedness," Alan stated. "It doesn't apply. They're wrong. This is a warm-blooded creature. This thing doesn't live in a swamp. This thing's got a 25 - 27-foot neck?" Alan hypothesised.
"30, actually," John corrected. They all walked towards to get a closer look at the dinosaur. The brachiosaurus stood on its back two legs to reach the top of the tall trees. The earth shook as it landed back on all fours. Robyn laughed with excitement.
"Ian!" Robyn yelled over to her newest friend. "Get over here!" She gestured the tall man over. She watched Ian clamber out of the jeep and jogged his way over to the group. Ian stopped beside Robyn and slung an arm over her shoulders. "Isn't she stunning?"
Ian nodded with a dopey grin. "It's, uh, marvellous."
"How fast is it?" Alan asked, his neck still craned up to see the head of the brachiosaurus.
"Well, we clocked the T-Rex at 32 miles an hour," John stated.
All five doctors turned to John in amazement. "T-Rex?" Ellie question. "You said you've got a T-Rex?"
"Say it again," Alan demanded in shock.
John smiled. "We have a T-Rex," he repeated.
Robyn leaned into Ian's side. The simple idea that a T-Rex was on the same island as them, caught her off-guard. She saw the rest of the scientists had a similar reaction to her as well as Alan almost fainted.
"Doctors," John addressed, admiring the vast of fields before him, several other herbivores littered across the plains. "Welcome to Jurassic Park."
