All of us are well acquainted with the topic that I'm going to present today, Literature (obviously-)
Our life on this app revolves around literature. We spend many minutes, hours reading a book that we think is too good to be true!
I know that some of the readers today are authors themselves so I decided that I might try and give some basic advice to all the authors out there that I think gets ignored.
Firstly, if your book revolves around two or more characters, mention whose thoughts/opinions we are reading about! Many times, authors don't forget to mention the character's POV which leads to a lot of confusion in the future.
Secondly, basic dialogue delivery β new authors often write their dialogues like this:
Character A: But don't you want to come with me?
This is a common mistake so no need to feel embarrassed or awkward.
There is no harm in writing your character's dialogues like this but if you are getting your book(s) in an award show; the below style is more preferable for the judges.
Character A questioned, "But don't you want to come with me?"
(This style of writing can be achieved by reading more books and practising your writing!)
Thirdly, (this is the most important one) pay attention to your grammar! Always remember to check/recheck your draft before you publish it, it'll be helpful for you in the near future if you decide to edit your work. If you are having doubts on how you can check your spellings and other stuff, there are basic mobile/laptop apps that help you check your basic sentence structure and grammatical errors. Remember, mistakes are common, even the greatest author makes mistakes.
The next advice doesn't really count as literature but it comes out as important from your book point of view β your cover. No matter how "basic" or how "aesthetic", always remember to mention your book's title in a readable and noticeable font. It'll help you gain more readers and gain your book more attention. Because a cover is the first thing that a reader will notice about your book.
These are some of the basic pieces of advice that I think are often overlooked by many new people in this field. If you are hoping to improve your writing, then practise! It's the only thing that'll lead you to success. And remember, during this journey find the genre with which you are comfortable and focus on improving it! Never forget to enjoy yourself through the journey!
