Chapter 4 - Chased By A Wolf
His dark eyes mesmerized me as he held me captive with his hands. I tried to break free but I thought I heard a growl emit from his throat. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I might be wrong - he couldn't possibly have growled. Shaking the thoughts away, I bit my lip.
"I...you just seem familiar..." I answered weakly.
His gaze flitted over me a second, as if assessing me before finally, he removed his hands from my shoulders. Instantly, I stood up straighter and brushed back strands of ebony hair.
"That's not a very good reason for stalking someone," he said to me, arching an eyebrow.
I shrugged and rested my head back against the wall.
"So what is a good reason?" I shot back, a playful tone to my voice.
He smirked slightly but in a flash, it was gone, replaced by a scowl on his pretty face.
"Just quit following me, alright?" he snarled before storming off down the alley, leaving me slightly confused.
I watched him go, his figure fading in the distance. With a sigh, I pushed myself off of the wall and began to walk back the way I'd come. It would be getting dark soon and I certainly didn't want to be out in case...well, I just didn't want to be out that late. Walking quickly, I made my way down the streets to the orphanage. But I wasn't fast enough and night fell fast around me. Crickets chirped and the moon hung low in the midst of glittering stars in the night sky.
My shoes crunched on the cracked pavement as I passed by the woods. I hated taking this route but it was the shortest. Shrugging, I tried to shake off the feeling of something watching me. It was just my imagination, I'm sure. That wolf had to be long gone by now. After all, why would it stay?
I had made it down the sidewalk and was about to turn the corner up ahead when something that sounded like a twig cracked in the woods. My head snapped to the dark copse of trees to my left. I swallowed the lump that began to form in my throat and pushed down the bout of anxiety in my stomach. It was probably just a small animal of some sort. Nothing be afraid of, certainly. I started to walk on but this time, a low growl came from behind me.
My chest tightened and I let out a shaky breath in the night air. Slowly, I turned around. But once I did, I wished I hadn't. It was a wolf. But not the one I'd seen before. This one looked...more sinister, if at all possible.
Its eyes were amber-colored like the other wolf's had been but it had its teeth bared, the fur on the creature's back raised up in warning. I could tell from its penetrating eyes that it meant to harm me. It wouldn't run away like the other one had. Hesitantly, I took a step back and it growled again, louder this time. My brown eyes widened with fear and impulsively, I whipped around and began to run. It barked menacingly and within seconds, it was after me.
My feet hit the pavement with loud thuds as I raced away, the cool night air hitting my skin. Stores and houses zipped by me as I ran. An aching began in my chest as my lungs hungered for more air and my legs felt like they were on fire. But still, I ran, the wolf snapping at me whenever it got close. It was on my heels now and I put on another burst of speed. But wait, where was I?
With a start, I suddenly realized that all the normal houses and store landmarks had disappeared. I was nearing the woods.
