Haley never questioned her father's work.
Dr. John Janson was a busy man, always dressed in pristine white coats, always moving from one research facility to another, always talking about the future of humanity. He told her the world was sick, but he was helping to fix it.
"One day, you'll understand" He would say when she asked too many questions.
For most of her childhood, life was comfortable. The house they lived in was sleek, modern, and eerily spotless. It sat in a secured sector of the city, protected by walls higher than her ten-year-old self could see over. She had tutors instead of school, security instead of neighbours. Her father kept her close, telling her the world outside wasn't safe.
She believed him.
But sometimes, she would hear things. Whispers from passing scientists, muttered numbers and names she wasn't supposed to remember. Children's names. She once peeked into her father's office and saw classified documents on his desk, full of charts and results labelled WCKD TRIALS - IMMUNE SUBJECTS.
She didn't understand what it meant. Her father loved her, didn't he?
The first time something felt truly wrong, she was twelve.
A boy - thin, pale, and sickly - was being dragged through the halls of the WCKD facility, kicking and screaming. Haley had been wandering where she wasn't supposed to, but she froze when the boy's wild eyes met her.
"They're lying to you" He gasped, just before he was pulled out of sight "Run"
She didn't.
She told her father what she saw that night, expecting reassurance. Instead, his expression hardened, and he told her never to ask about it again.
"It's for the greater good" He said "Don't concern yourself with things you don't understand"
That was the first time she felt afraid of him.
She was sixteen when everything shattered.
The security alarms blared around WCKD headquarters. Voices shouted through the halls, scientists scrambling. She was shoved into a locked room as chaos unfolded outside.
That was the last time she saw her father before waking up in total darkness - no memories, no past, no identity.
Just a metal box shaking beneath her feat.
Just the sound of gears grinding, pulling her toward a fate she never saw coming.
And then - light.
Blinding, burning light as the box doors opened. A voice called down to her.
"Welcome to the Glade, greenie"
Haley had long since stopped trying to remember.
She learned early that the more she tried to grasp the memories buried deep in her mind, the worse the headaches became. Fragments of voices, a cold clinical room, the distant echo of someone yelling her name - it all danced just out of reach, taunting her.
So she let it go. At least, that's what she told herself.
She had a life here now. The Glade was all she knew, and she had built something for herself.
Haley came sprinting around the corner, a smile on her face as she could hear Minho and Ben's groaning from behind her, both of them annoyed that she had outran them once again.
"Come on guys, stop being such sore losers"
Minho scoffed "Oh, you're in for it now" Haley squealed, running even faster as Ben and Minho start to speed up.
Once they made it back to the Glade, Minho gave Haley a slight nudge and nodded his head at a dark haired boy that was stood beside Chuck "The new Greenie's looking at you"
The girl rolled her eyes as she started to slow down once they neared the two boys.
"Hey, Chuck" Minho nodded at the young boy "New Greenie, huh?"
"How does it feel to be promoted?" Ben asked, looking directly at Chuck as they pass.
Chuck gives them a small wave as they leave "Feels great, Ben" He turned around again, his eyes meeting Haley's "Hey, Haley"
Haley swallowed, feeling her sore throat burn from all the running "Hey, Chuck. The new Greenie here isn't bothering you is he?"
The dark haired boy opened his mouth to say something when Haley cracked a smile "I'm just joking, relax. I'll see you at the bonfire tonight, Chuck" She ruffled his hair and nodded her head at the Greenie before walking away as she started taking off her harness.
The boy couldn't help but stare. Her dirty, blonde hair that feel perfectly over her shoulders, them dark brown eyes that scarily reminded him of Newt's, the blonde British boy he had met only a few hours ago, and that smile.
"Who's that?" The Greenie questioned Chuck.
"That's Haley, the only girl here. She was the second person to arrive up in the box - a month after Alby"
"I-I thought no one was allowed to leave" The Greenie said as he finally allowed his eyes to leave Haley who was now talking to Gally.
"I said we're not allowed to leave" Chuck replied "They're different, they're runners. They know more about the maze than anyone"
"Wait, what? You just said Maze"
"I did?" Chuck watched the new Greenie make his way over to the walls "Where are you going? What are you doing?" He asked in slight panic.
"I'm just gonna take a look"
"I told you, you can't. No one leaves, especially not now" Chuck told him "It's not safe"
"Oh for fuck sake" Haley sighed, spotting the new Greenie walking slowly towards the doors of the maze.
She pushed past Gally cutting him off from what he was about to say causing him to whirl around in confusion until he realised what was happening as he followed closely behind her.
Once she reached the new boy, her hands pressed firmly into his chest causing him to fly backwards into the dirt.
She stood over him with her jaw clenched in anger and annoyance "What the fuck do you think you're playing at?"
The Greenie shot up, scrambling away from Haley as a crowd started to form.
"All right! Calm, calm, calm" Gally extended his arms out in front of him whilst the Greenie moved around crazily.
"Don't touch me!" He screamed, jumping back once again.
"No one is touching you, Greenie. All right, just take it easy!" Haley said, taking another step towards him.
"What the hell is wrong with you guys?" The boy rushed out as he looked around at all the people that surrounded him "Why won't you just tell me what's out there?"
"We're just trying to protect you, man. It's for your own good" Alby stated calmly, not fazed one bit by the boy's craziness.
"You guys can't just keep me here!" He shouted, getting more and more worked up as time went on.
"No one is keeping you here but you go through those doors, you're not coming back" Haley told him, tucking her hands into her cargo pants pockets lazily as rumbling ripped through the Glade with wind coming down to the entrance of the maze causing leaves to blow into their faces.
The Greenie watched in horror as the doors slowly started to shut, the noises were dying down before a loud bang rang out signifying the doors were completely shut for the night.
Haley rammed her shoulder into the dark haired boy's shoulder as he jumped back and looked at her in surprise "Next time, I'm gonna let you fucking leave"
"Language, Haley!" Newt shouted, his hands cupped around his mouth so the girl could hear him.
Haley turned around with a smile on her face as she looked like she was saluting the blonde boy before it turned into her flipping him off. Newt rolled his eyes as the girl retreated into the homestead to finally freshen up from her running around the maze all day.
"That girl's gonna be the death of me one day" He muttered under his breath.
"Welcome to the Glade" Alby whispered into the boy's ear who was keeping his focus on the walls like they were going to reopen again whilst everyone else slowly started to depart and return to their daily jobs.
