New Teammate
It's a lazy Sunday and the first day of school for Wally West. Spook and Phantom are fast asleep, floating halfway up in the air in their ghost forms in the living room of the cave.
"Are they sleeping?" Robin asks.
"I can't tell," Superboy says. "They aren't breathing, but since they're dead they never do."
"Hey, guys!" Megan greets, flying into the room. "What's up?"
"We're trying to decide if the twins are asleep or not," Robin admits.
"Oh, I'll float up and find out," Megan says and floats up to them. "Their eyes are closed."
"So they're asleep," Robin confirms. "Megan, do you ever float sleep?"
"No, only when my powers were budding," she replies. "That's not the case with them though, I believe they wanted to."
"So, should we wake them?" Robin suggests.
"How? We can't shake them awake," Megan says. "Our hand will just phase through them."
"That only applies to humans," Superboy says.
"What do you mean?" Robin asks, turning to look at Superboy quizzically.
"I felt her touch when she placed her hand on my own. She could grasp my hand," Superboy says, looking at his hand. "She said maybe it was an alien thing."
"Then I'll wake them," Megan says, tentatively moving her hand toward them and wondering if her hand will go through them or not. Her hand makes contact with Phantom's right shoulder, and she gently shakes him. "Phantom? Wakey wakey..."
Phantom groans and turns away from her.
"He doesn't seem like a morning person," Robin says.
"It is 9:30 in the morning," Megan says. "Maybe ghosts sleep longer?"
Spook groans. "No, it's because you guys wake up too damn early..."
"Why are you guys out here in the first place?" Robin asks.
"Normal kids sleep in till like 1 especially if you are a superhero that stays up till 3 in the morning," Spook scoffs. "We're out here because we fell asleep out here while watching movies all night long."
"We snuck out here after you all went to bed," Phantom says.
"Why are you sleep floating? Is that a normal thing?" Robin asks.
"Jeez, so many questions so early in the morning," Spook complains with a sigh, dragging her hand down her face. "When we first got our powers, we couldn't control our powers, so things like walking through tables, walls, floors, beds, and whatever else happened a lot. We'd fall asleep and sometimes wake up, nose touching the ceiling. We like to sleep float sometimes because it's somewhat more comfy."
"Weird," Robin says. "Weird, question, but when was the last time you went to school?"
"I would guess before we died," Phantom says with a groan and sits up, knowing he's not going to get anymore sleep. "Whatever grade 12 year olds go to."
"That'd be 7th grade," Robin says. "You two seem like you'd be smart enough to be passed that."
"We're gifted," the twins say, floating down to sit on the couch.
"Why are you asking about stuff like that?" Phantom asks.
"Just wondering," Robin lies.
"I just got an awesome idea!" Megan cheers. "Let's have a beach day!"
"Sounds interesting," Superboy says.
"We need to get some food," Robin says.
"I have already acquired some food," Kaldur says, walking in the room with groceries full of different food. "I was coming to ask if you all would like to have a beach day since the weather is so beautiful today."
"I'll call Wally and tell him to meet us after he finishes school," Robin says, sending a text to him.
Everybody rushes out the room to get changed into their bathing suits. Phantom and Spook look at each other with a shrug.
"Guess we can't really change into anything," Spook says and sighs. "Sometimes I really hate this little act we're doing, but we do it to keep ourselves and others safe."
They return to the living room to gather whatever they want to bring out to the beach.
"Uh, twins, you know we are going to the beach, right?" Robin asks.
"Uh, Robin, you do know we are ghosts and can't change, right?" Spook retorts.
"Oh, right... Heh..."
"Actually, we might," Phantom says.
"Do tell," Spook says.
"We manipulate our outfits like we can do with our bodies."
"I guess that makes sense."
"Kind of like how I shapeshift," Megan says.
"Megan has been teaching me how to shapeshift my clothes," Phantom says, transforming his clothes into bathing suit shorts.
"New power? Nice," Spook compliments.
"If I can do it, I know you can," Phantom says.
"Because we share the same powers," Spook says, slowly trying to transform into a bikini sorta like Megan's.
Spook eventually gets into a bikini that she imagined in her head, and they all exit to the beach, carrying surfboards and coolers of food.
"Hello, Megan. We should hit the beach every day!"
"First a moment of silence for our absent comrade," Robin comments.
"Poor Wally," Megan says.
They quickly get over his absence, set their things down, and run into the water. They swim, splash each other, and laugh. After a while, they make hotdogs on a mini grill to eat for lunch.
After lunch they play volleyball then cover Superboy in a mountain of sand.
The day continues with more fun before it begins to get dark, and Batman calls the team in. They all change into their costumes before meeting up with Batman, Red Tornado, and Green Arrow in the mission room.
"Team, we'd like to introduce a new teammate," Batman says.
A blonde girl comes from behind Green Arrow dressed in a fashion similar to his attire.
"I'm Artemis, nice to meet you," she greets.
"Sweet! Another girl!" Megan cheers happily. "Hi, I'm Miss Martian, but you can call me Megan or my real name is M'gann."
"I am Aqualad but my friends call me Kaldur."
"I'm Robin."
"Superboy."
"I'm Spook, and this is my older twin brother."
"I'm Phantom, nice to meet you, Artemis."
Spook's eyes suddenly widen. "You're the one who saved KF, right?"
"I've been caught."
"Kid Flash should be here any minute..." Megan says.
"Recognize: Kid Flash, B03."
"There he is now! I'm sure you two will get along famously," Megan says.
"The Wall-man is here. Now let's get this party star–" He trips and falls, all the stuff he's holding goes flying. "–ted."
"Wall-man, huh? I love the uniform," Artemis says. "What exactly are your powers?"
"Uh, who's this?" Wally asks.
"Artemis, your new teammate," she answers smugly.
"Kid Flash. Never heard of you."
"Um, she's my new protégé," Green Arrow says.
"What happened to your old one?" Wally scoffs.
"Recognized: Speedy, B06."
"Well, for starters, he doesn't go by Speedy anymore. Call me Red Arrow," the new red head says.
"So that's who Speedy is," Spook says, looking him up and down. "Not too shabby."
"Roy," GA says, walking forward. "You look–"
"Replaceable," Roy scoffs.
"It's not like that. You told me you were going solo," GA explains.
"So why waste time finding a sub? Can she even use that bow?"
"Yes, she can," Artemis says, getting in Roy's face.
"Who are you?" Wally huffs.
"I'm/She's his/my niece."
"Another niece?" Robin chuckles.
"But she is not your replacement," Kaldur says. "We have always wanted you on the team, and we have no quota on archers."
"And if we did, you know who we'd pick," Wally says.
"Whatever, Baywatch," Artemis scoffs. "I'm here to stay."
"You came to us for a reason," Kaldur says.
"Yeah, a reason named Dr. Serling Roquette," RA says.
Robin's eyes widen slightly. "Nanorobotics genius and claytronics expert at Royal University in Star City. Vanished 2 weeks ago."
"Abducted 2 weeks ago by the League of Shadows," RA corrects.
"Whoa. You want us to rescue her from the shadows?" Robin asks.
"Hard-core," Wally says, fist bumping Robin.
"I already rescued her," RA says. "Only one problem. The Shadows had already coerced her into creating a weapon. Doc calls it the fog, comprised of millions of microscopic robots, nanotech infiltrators capable of disintegrating anything in their path; concrete, steel, flesh... bone. But its true purpose isn't mere destruction. It's theft. The infiltrators eat and store raw data from any computer system and deliver the stolen intel to the shadows providing them access to weapons, strategic defense, cutting-edge science and tech."
"Perfect for extortion, manipulation, power broking. Yeah, sounds like the Shadows," Artemis says.
"Like you know anything about the Shadows," Wally scoffs and she smirks at him, causing him to get angry. "Who are you?!"
"Roquette's working on a virus to render the fog inert," RA says.
"But if the Shadows know she can do that..." Robin says.
"They'll target her. Right now, she's off the grid. I stashed her at the local high school's computer lab," RA says.
"You left her alone?" GA asks with disbelief.
"She's safe enough for now."
"Then let's you and I keep her that way," GA pleads.
"You and I? Don't you wanna take your new protégé?" RA scoffs.
Batman puts a hand on GA's shoulder. "You brought this to the team. It's their mission, which means it's hers now, too," GA says.
"Then my job's done," RA huffs.
"Recognized: Speedy–"
"That's Red Arrow, B06. Update." That's the last thing he says before he disappears.
"Isn't he just a ray of sunshine?" Phantom asks.
"A hot ray of sunshine with a nice ass," Spook comments.
"Gross," Phantom says, sticking his tongue out.
"Hey, a girl can look," she retorts, sticking her tongue out back at him.
"Let us not fool around and head to the mission given to us," Kaldur says.
"More like dumped upon," Phantom says.
They all head to the bioship to head to Happy Harbor High School.
"So, what exactly are your powers?" Artemis asks Phantom.
"Too many to name," Phantom responds. "Short version is–"
"We're dead," Spook cuts him off.
"Y-you're dead? What do you mean?" Artemis asks.
"It means that we're ghosts with powers," Spook says.
"They don't have heartbeats," Superboy says.
"R-really?" Artemis asks.
"Only aliens can touch them," Robin says.
"You can give it a try if you want," Phantom says. Artemis hesitantly reaches her hand towards him, and Phantom laughs. "I'm not gonna bite you."
She huffs and sticks her hand through his stomach, which he turns intangible. Her eyes widen, and she begins to move her hand around. "This is so weird." She brings her hand back to her side. "H-how did you die?"
"Explosion," the twins answer.
"Then how are you here?"
"They were covered in a rare substance called ectoplasm," Robin says. "Basically residue from ghosts."
"It fused with our DNA, killing us but remaining somewhat alive," Spook says. "Then we gained powers and began helping people in our little town from other ghosts that began appearing after the explosion."
"Of course, my sister died a little before me and had to teach me what she learned after I died in a separate explosion that she covered me from getting hurt but that blasted her power into me, giving me powers."
"Wow, that's terrible."
"Not really, we still can do pretty much everything we could do when we were alive," Phantom says. "But better because we have powers."
"We can eat, sleep, play, and whatever else," Spook says.
"But you can't touch people," Artemis says.
"We can touch people, they just can't touch us," Spook says. "If that makes any sense."
"You're a ghost, it makes perfect sense," Wally says.
"Destination lies ahead," Megan says, cutting everyone off.
"M'gann, Superboy, and Phantom are on perimeter watch," Aqualad says. "Spook, Artemis, KF, Robin, and I will be inside protecting Dr. Roquette."
"Gotcha, bossman," Spook says with a salute.
They get in position and after a few minutes Miss M's voice appears in everyone's heads.
'Everyone online?'
'Ohh. This is weird,' Artemis says, touching her head.
'And distracting. Coding a distributive algorithm virus on a kiddie computer with less ram than a wristwatch is hard enough. Now I have to hear teen-think in my skull?' Dr. Roquette complains.
'Lady, do you always complain when someone tries to help you?' KF huffs, taking a bite of his chocolate bar.
'Pot, kettle. Have you met?' Artemis jokes.
'Hey. Hey, I do not need attitude from the newbie who drove Red Arrow off the team,' KF huffs.
'That is so not on me,' Artemis grunts, jumping off the table she's sitting on in a huff.
'Fate of the world at stake!' Dr. Roquette complains.
'She started it,' KF huffs.
'How 'bout I just help Miss Martian, Phantom, and Superboy patrol the perimeter?' Artemis suggests.
'Good idea,' Aqualad grunts.
'You might cut her some slack,' Robin says. 'It was her arrow saved your butt against Amazo.'
'What? No, that was Speedy's– I mean Red Arrow's arrow, right?'
'Not so much,' Phantom says. 'It was a green arrow not a red one.'
'Humph. Besides it was more the twins' ghost ray.'
'Not really,' Spook says.
'Well, still not giving her the satisfaction.'
'You know I can still hear you,' Artemis says.
"Ahh!" Wally shouts aloud.
'I couldn't get the Justice League,' Dr. Roquette fusses.
'Just be grateful you have any,' Spook says, giving her a glare. 'We could just let you get assassinated. Maybe once you're a ghost like me you could be a part of the Justice League.'
The doctor looks at her with a small gulp.
'The virus won't be of much use if we cannot find the weapon. Can you track it?' Aqualad asks.
'My utility fog is not a weapon. It's science, brilliant science, and of course I can track it, but I'd have to go online. Might as well rent a billboard with this address and 'assassinate me' written in neon.'
Aqualad puts a hand on her shoulder to reassure her. 'We will protect you.'
She seems reassured as she presses the enter button. 'Tracking the fog now.' An airplane appears on the computer, and Robin leaves the room to head outside.
'Mmm. Those boys,' Artemis purrs, looking Superboy and Phantom up an down.
'They can hear you,' Miss M huffs. 'We can all hear you.'
'Oh, I know,' Artemis responds.
'Gross!' Spook gags.
'Miss Martian, Dr. Roquette has located the fog. Reconfigure the bioship so that Robin, Phantom, and Superboy can pursue,' Aqualad says.
'Ready," Miss M says. After a few more minutes Miss M's voice perks back up. 'You embarrassed Phantom and Superboy.'
'Didn't hear them say that,' Artemis retorts.
'Must you challenge everyone?' Miss M fusses.
'Where I come from, that's how you survive,' Artemis replies.
Spook hears KF run away from the door. 'Be alert. Someone's here.'
Aqualad and Spook hear the whoosh sound of a ninja star. Aqualad jumps in the way, ninja star sticking in his chest.
"Doctor, get down!" Aqualad shouts.
Spook forms a force field around the doctor. Aqualad shoves Spook out of the way and gets three shuriken stuck in his arm.
"Hmm. That had to hurt," our attacker says.
"Atlantean skin is quite dense." Aqualad pulls out the blades.
"And my shuriken are quite poisoned."
'Miss M, Kid, Artemis, we are under attack in the computer lab,' Spook tells them.
'On our way,' Artemis says.
Spook protects the doctor while Aqualad takes care of the attacker.
"Poison slowin' you down?"
"Jellyfish toxin, I'm largely immune," Aqualad says, getting close to her face.
She headbutts him and he falls back to the floor. "Largely." She raises her sai and moves to stab him with it. Spook covers him with a force field as Artemis knocks the sai from the attacker's hand with an arrow. The attacker yelps in pain.
"Don't. Move," Artemis bellows, aiming an arrow at the assassin.
Aqualad gets back up and readies his water knives.
"Heh. This gig's getting interesting," the attacker says and flips out a knife. Artemis attacks her with arrows, and she dodges every one of them. KF and Miss Martian enter the room. "Maybe a little too interesting." She takes out a smoke pellet and throws it to the floor, disappearing as KF tries to tackle her and runs into Artemis.
"Yaah! Oop! Uhh," KF grunts, pushing himself out of Artemis' arms embarrassed. "Gone."
"She's getting away! You're letting her get away!" Dr. Roquette shouts.
"This is all your fault! You were on perimeter! How'd that Shadow get in?!" Wally shouts at Artemis.
"That's not really fair," Megan says. "I was outside, too."
"Outside being distracted by her," Wally scoffs. "Besides, I can't be mad at you." He grins at her. 'You gave me mouth-to-mouth.'
'We heard that!' everyone telepathically shouts.
"Dang it!"
"I didn't do half as well during my first battle, and I know you can't have been Green Arrow's sidekick for very long," Megan reassures.
"Focus, everyone," Aqualad commands. "The Shadows will be back."
"Robin to Aqualad. We're over Philadelphia. We've located the Shadows' next target, Star Labs. We're too late. It's destroyed, totally destroyed. The fog decimated it. This is bad. Star Labs is cutting-edge science, and now their secrets are in the hands of the enemy. What's our next move?" Robin says over the comms.
"Rescan for that fog. Find it. We're moving the doctor," Aqualad says.
They form a new plan and move to a harbor. KF and Artemis are with a disguised Miss Martian as Dr. Roquette. Aqualad is outside while Spook is with the real Dr. Roquette in a building a little farther down.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" Dr. Roquette asks Spook.
"Oh yeah, the whole fake scene always works," Spook says.
Dr. Roquette sighs as she continues working.
'Stop it, both of you,' Aqualad commands.
'What?!' Wally and Artemis fuss.
'I can hear you glaring,' Aqualad says then presses his comm for the distraction. "Miss Martian, stay in camouflage mode and make a wide perimeter sweep."
Aqualad enters the Sandbar Café and Spook raises glowing fists just to make sure before she releases her defensive stance, realizing it's Aqualad.
"I've almost got it!" Dr. Roquette exclaims.
A bang is heard from above on the roof.
"We have company," Aqualad huffs.
"Uploading now. And by the way, you said you'd protect me," Dr. Roquette says.
A smoke pellet is rolled towards the three of them and explodes, causing Spook and Aqualad to get into a defensive position. A ceiling tile moves from behind them and Aqualad gets three darts full of jellyfish poison lodged in his chest. Spook disappears and watches from the shadows.
"Let's test the limit of your jellyfish immunity, shall we?" He tries to gather his senses by shaking his head and moves to attack. The attacker gets a good hook to his face, knocking him out and water bearers dispersing. "There. Limit tested. Now, doctor, time for my appointment."
"Don't think so," Spook says, blasting her back.
She groans as she picks herself from the floor. "Well, if it isn't the halfa."
Spook's eyes widen. "How do you know that?"
"I do my research."
"How about you research this!?" Spook shouts, blasting the assassin across the room.
The attacker slowly gets up, noticing the computer finished the virus download. "So you finished the virus, eliminating the reason for your elimination, though not the entertainment value. Lucky for you my orders are clear. You live to program another day. After all, doctor, The Shadows may find another use for you." The Shadow leaves through the door.
"You're not going to go after her?" Dr. Roquette asks.
"I have more important things to attend to," Spook says, helping up Aqualad. "My teammate is hurt, and I need to help him." Explosions ring off from outside. "It sounds like somebody else has her." Spook throws Aqualad's arm around her shoulders as she helps him out the door.
"Thanks, Spook," Aqualad weakly says. They make their way out to find Artemis outside the café. "Artemis, where's the assassin?"
"She, uh... She got away..."
That's the moment KF shows up next to her along with Phantom. "Oh, from you? Oh, big surprise. Notice we got ours." He points behind him at the two wrapped up villains that Megan levitates down. He notices the mask from the assassin on the ground and picks it up. "Cool. Souvenir."
Aqualad stands on his own and walks over next to KF. "Her mask? Did you see her... her face?" Aqualad asks, pulling out the darts from his chest.
"It was dark," Artemis lies.
"It is fine. Robin and Superboy neutralized the fog, and Dr. Roquette is safe, thanks in no small part to you." Artemis turns to them. "Welcome to the team," Aqualad welcomes.
Artemis gives a small smile as they walk up to her.
"I'm glad you're here to stay," Spook says.
"Yay! Another sister," Megan cheers. "Here on Earth, I mean. I have 12 back on Mars, but trust me, it's not the same."
"I wouldn't know. But thanks," Artemis says.
Megan elbows KF in the ribs. "Ow. Yeah. Welcome."
Artemis holds out her hand and KF shakes it.
