Chapter 8

There were many times that Pit had feared for his life because of different situations involving varying degrees of danger, but nothing was ever more terrifying to him than falling out of the sky. He had been unable to fly since birth and had always dreamed of soaring through the skies. Whenever Palutena had made this possible for him, he was ecstatic, yet his greatest fear also came from his greatest joy.

If it weren't for (y/n) holding his hand before they arrived, Pit would have been far more terrified than he already was as the two of them fell. "This is a bad time not to know how to fly on your own!" Dark Pit made sure to take note of.

"Stupid labyrinth!" (y/n) shouted in annoyance as she pulled Pit toward her and spread her wings out to catch an air current. They were immediately jerked to the side as two sets of her wings caught a current of air while the third pair tried to catch up. "I hate it when this happens!"

Pit clung to her for dear life as she attempted and succeeded to stop their fall. Pit could hear the sound of her wings beating against the air as she hovered in place. He once again wondered how she was able to fly with six wings thinking that they must get in the way of each other at some point. "Thank you," he quietly spoke as (y/n) landed them on solid ground. He quickly gave her space once she had let him go. They didn't seem to be in any immediate danger, but it was hard to see anything off in the distance because of the dark grey fog in the area. (Y/n) lit a flame in her hand to help them see.

"No problem. Now we don't have to worry about that. But from now on, you're going to need to fly on your own, so we're going to fix that now before we go any further than this," (y/n) announced. Pit stared at her in confusion. How could someone "fix" his flight?

"Well this should be interesting," Dark Pit commented, knowing that Pit was incapable of flight unless given the ability by Palutena. That's when he realized what (y/n) was about to do. Her wings had began to glow until a set disappeared entirely leaving her with four wings instead of six. Soon after, the glow from her wings appeared on his own and he slowly rose from the groun.

"You should be able to fly now so long as I still have my own wings. If I lose my wings, you lose flight, got that?" (y/n) said with a slight smile. Pit was too overwhelmed with happiness to say anything at first. He felt the power flowing through his wings as he flapped them a few times.

"I...I can fly!" he exclaimed. Seconds after speaking, he dodged an speeding object that had been aimed at his face. He was quick to retreat to (y/n)'s side with his weapon readied for battle just as fast as he'd gotten to her. As a former warrior, the instincts still lay within him.

"There shouldn't be anyone here attacking us. The Labyrinth of Deceit is just a maze. I could have sworn no one lived here," (y/n) said with worry. She now had a flame in her other hand while she looked around in the dense fog.

"Do you know how to get out of this fog? If you do, then guide me through it. I'll keep us safe from whatever that was," Pit spoke. Just as he said this, (y/n) swiped at the air with her flames in an attempt to incinerate the object whiskng past her. The flames didn't do anything to it, but they still had no idea what the object was. All Pit knew was that it had cut (y/n)'s arm and kept going.

"I don't know my way around, but the location of the labyrinth should be right here. I don't understand," (y/n) said with a bit of panic. The new cut on her arm didn't seem to bother her, but Pit was upset that she had been hurt already when they'd just gotten there. Another speeding object flew past but Pit dodged this one as well.

"I have an idea," Pit spoke. He pulled back the nonexistent strings of the Palutena bow and aimed it upwards. "Quick, put your lights out," he said. Luckily, (y/n) did just as he instructed just before he let the arrow of light go. When he did, Pit grabed (y/n)'s arm and began to pull her along. As he ran, they could hear the sound of maybe hundreds of of the little objects wisking upward after the arrow that Pit had shot.

"Looks like you did something smart for once, but now how are we going to see anything from here? You can't just run in blind." Dark Pit commented.

"Can't you be a little positive for once?" Pit whinned in response.

"I don't know, you tell me. You did name me Dark Pit didn't you." Pit chose not to give a reply mostly since he was more worried about not dying at the moment. He thought that it was only a matter of time that the beings responsible for targeting them realized that the arrow was a decoy. As he ran, (y/n) pulled ahead of him so that she now led the way. It wasn't entirely dark so they could see to some extent, but they didn't know what awaited them. Were they even going the right way? Why weren't they being attacked now? Pit had so many more questions, but he could not ask them.

He sensed sudden danger and dug his feet in the ground, stopping himself in his tracks and pulling (y/n) back with him. Just as he did, the fog suddenly disbursed from the area and two light sources in the form of glowing green eyes could be seen in front of them. Both were easily larger than Pit was tall.

"Dragon," (y/n) whispered. Pit wasn't sure how she knew this was a dragon, but he didn't care to ask.

"You have trespassed into the Underworld and disturbed me in my slumber at the entrance of the Labyrinth of Deceit. Give me one reason why I shouldn't barbecue you where you stand," the dragon spoke. Pit was incapable of moving or saying anything having been petrified by fear.

"You shouldn't do that because I am a vessel chosen by a number of high authorities. Killing me here and now would make you the enemy of not just Medusa, but also the other two out of the five that gave me my power. It would certainly mean the end of your life," (y/n) quickly said. Pit was surprised by how calm she was in comparison to him.

"Oh? You have the audacity to threaten me?" the dragon laughed. "It has been a while since I've come across someone with such boldness. Most try to run away or attack out of fear. You amuse me, so I will let you live for now. I care not about those you mentioned. This labyrinth belongs to me now, but nice try."

Pit accidentally let out a slight yelp as the area was lit up by the beginnings of flames coming from beneath the dragon's scales. The dragon laughed again, immediately putting out the kindled flames.

"I merely wished to see your faces a bit clearly. It's strange to find a falling angel accompanying as weakened seraphim. One of you is missing a set of wings and the other is losing who they are. Very interesting indeed." The dragon shifted and rose his head up towards the sky and released a stream of flames up into the air. If Pit weren't still concerned for his life he'd think...

"It's pretty," Dark Pit quietly murmured, stealing the potential thought right from Pit. Dark Pit was not aware that he had spoken this aloud, and his sudden words changed Pit's perspective a bit to allow him to see the beauty of the flames as the spread through the darkened sky.

Some of the fire got caught in what seemed to be a hanging torch before several more magically lit up on there own above their heads one after another. There were seven in total spaced back as far as the two of them had initially run from. Pit was able to see that they were in an underground chamber of sorts and the dragon was the source of the fog. The black dragon had needle-like spikes running down the middle of its tail in clusters, and Pit thought with a bit of terror that these had been the objects flying after his arrow. How could the dragon have seen them with its eyes closed? How could it even conceal its presence until Pit was too close to ignore it?

"The labyrinth can only be entered with my permission. I've taken interest in the two of you, so I'll let you both enter. I'm curious to know what you came here for, so be sure to come back and visit if you can. The power you used to get here was quite impressive, so I'm sure you can make it here again," the dragon informed.

Pit was still afraid of the enormous creature, but he had a question. "Excuse me but...how did we fall into this place? There's a ceiling in here, but we fell from a long distance and didn't fall through any roofs or anything."

"You're quite the curious falling angel, aren't you. I cannot reveal my secrets since I believe there is a chance the two of you will live past this place. It will be a secret. Now go, before I change my mind," the dragon said before blowing steam off into the air. The steam, Pit realized, was what he earlier thought was fog. It quickly covered the room, changing color as the flames of the hanging torches went out. Once more, he and (y/n) were plunged into darkness, but just as quickly as the fog had come, it soon disappeared as miniature torches lit up along the corridor that they found themselves in.

"I think that dragon is helping us," (y/n) guessed.

"Yeah, but I'm glad we didn't just become barbecue because I'd rather not be toast or any other kind of dragon food," Pit muttered. He realized that he was still tightly clinging to (y/n)'s arm and quickly let her go. "Sorry, I didn't mean to do that," he apologized.

"It's alright. I was kinda terrified so it helped a bit. I've never seen a dragon before. I thought they were extinct," (y/n) admitted.

"Extinct? What does that mean?" Pit asked. (Y/n) gave him a sad look.

"Maybe I'll tell you when we have the time. Right now, we need to find that mirror as soon as possible. This labyrinth isn't the same as the last time I was here, so we have to be careful even if the dragon is helping us. Be ready to fight at any moment." (Y/n) lit a flame in her hand and began to walk ahead. "We can't afford to waste any time or you'll...your wings will turn," she added.

Pit appreciated her concern for him, but there was a lot that she wasn't telling him. "What do you think extinct means, Dark Pit?" There was no reply. "Dark Pit? Hey, I know you're there. I didn't even do anything for you to ignore me this time." Still there was no reply, but it wasn't just the lack of reply that sent Pit into panic. He had checked his wings out of instinct seeing that there were at most three or four that remain unchanged.

"Hey, what's wrong?" (y/n) asked when he had abruptly stopped following her. Pit didn't answer her, but he could tell by the look on her face that she had noticed his wings.

"Dark Pit, please say something. Anything at all!" Pit pleaded. Only the sound of crackling fire could be heard instead of what should have been Dark Pit's response. "He's gone," Pit whimpered. "I can't hear him amymore."

"You mean...?" (y/n) asked but she didn't finish her question knowing well who Pit was referring to.

"He was just there. I heard him when we were still with the dragon but I can't hear him anymore. I promised him that I'd save both of us," Pit began to rant as tears threatened to show up.

"Hey, calm down a moment. You're still here so that means, he has to still be okay somewhere right?" (y/n) reasoned.

"But we don't know that for sure. We have to hurry. How do we get to the mirror from here?" Pit was frantic. He did not want to lose someone he just gained especially after losing his mother.

"It's in the center of the labyrinth. If the dragon really his helping us, then we should be able to head right to it," (y/n) explained.

"Then let's go. There's no time to waste. Dark Pit is counting on us."
