CHARLOTTE AND DAKOTA'S SHARED APARTMENT
new york, new york
i finally arrived at dakota and charlotte's shared apartment, where the two decided that it would be a good idea to throw a small party to celebrate the adoption of lily.
"wow, this place looks great!" i said as i took note of the pink decorations all around the house.
charlotte was currently standing near one of the tables that was set up and appeared to be making sure everything was perfect. i quietly made my way over to her, "i brought a gift!" i said as i handed it to her.
charlotte took the gift and smiled, the girl knew how i shopped. "thank you, jamie." she said with a smile as she took the gift and placed it with the others. "you look nice! that green suits you." she said, giving me a quick onceover.
"and pink suits you." i told the brunette.
"so a baby shower for a one year old." carrie joked from behind me.
i spun around and saw carrie, samantha, and miranda walking over with gifts in hand.
charlotte smiled widely as she quickly wrapped up carrie in a hug, "thanks for coming guys!" she said happily. "this means the world to me. and i think to dakota too but you'll have a hard time getting a smile out of him." she said, knowing that dakota often had a stoic expression on his face. he'd been like that with a dry sense of humor since we were kids.
"i'll get that smile from him sooner or later." carrie said before looking around. "where is the man of the hour?"
"changing lily's diaper in the other room." charlotte stated as she gestured with her head. "he'll be out here in a second."
just as she said that, the man himself entered the room with an adorable baby in his arms. dakota was just like i said, serious, determined, and focused. his dry wit and humor was nowhere to be seen at the moment as he walked over to us.
"let me see the beauty!" i said as i skipped over to my brother.
dakota handed lily over to me while keeping a close eye on her. i held the infant and smiled down at her, admiring her golden, yellowish-toned skin, black soft hair and her deep brown eyes.
"she's beautiful." i said as i looked up at my brother with a smile. "you guys did good."
dakota's stoic facade faded for a quick second and i was able to see the happiness and admiration in his eyes.
"thanks." he said in his usual deep voice. he reached over to take the small girl back into his arms, and i was surprised to see her look up at him and smile. dakota's serious eyes went soft, and even charlotte couldn't help but smile at the scene.
"you're one hell of a dad, man." i said as i playfully smacked his arm. he didn't say anything, but i could tell that he was proud and happy.
just then, carrie piped up, "you need to smile more often."
"hey! he's hardworking, so he can smile as little as he wants or as much as he wants." charlotte defended.
"exactly, he's always busy and in charge of that team." i stated, knowing that my brother had a stressful job as team advertising executive. "if he doesn't want to smile, he doesn't have to! and plus he's been like this since he was a kid."
"that is true. but carrie, i do smile. though i tend to only do it when i'm around people that i'm close with." he said before walking into the living room where the guests were.
charlotte shot carrie a look. "dakota makes his jokes and smiles when he wants to. why do you have to point these things out?" she said, clearly frustrated.
"i just think he'd look a little bit more approachable if he wasn't so stoic." carrie said in response, causing miranda to step in.
"not every man is approachable, or wants to be." she told the blonde.
i rolled my eyes slightly at carrie's comment, but thankfully the conversation was interrupted by the doorbell.
"i'll get it!" i said, sensing the perfect opportunity to get away from the conversation about my brother.
the party went smoothly. it was a great gathering, filled with fun, laughter, good food, and joy, everyone was having a great time. everyone was complimenting dakota and charlotte on lily and how well they were doing as parents. in the end, the day turned out to be a success.
after helping the happy couple clean up, i was the last to go. "thank you all for inviting me. i loved celebrating your special day." i told the two while we stood at the front door.
"thank you for coming." charotte said with a smile as dakota stood silently nearby, still holding lily.
"yeah thanks for coming jamie." he said, his expression unchanging, and i chuckled, knowing that he had gotten back to his usual emotionless self. "it's always great seeing you." he told me.
"alright mister, i was sticking up for you but this is the most stoic you've been." i told him.
dakota's expression became a bit more relaxed, and he actually shot me a smirk. "i'm allowed to be serious." he said with a slight laugh as he looked down at lily. "i have a kid to focus on now."
"you had jemma and weren't this stoic." i reminded him.
"yeah well jemma is older." he stated plainly, to which charotte chuckled. "jemma isn't a baby." charotte added in, and dakota nodded in agreement. "i just need to focus." he said, and charotte, knowing what he meant, placed her hand on his back.
"you're doing great." the brunette assured my brother who just nodded.
"bye you two." i told them.
"safe travels home, jamie. and thanks for the gifts." charlotte said.
i nodded, "of course. bye baby lily...you have the best mommy and daddy ever." i whispered to the young girl who waved back, with the help of dakota.
housekeeping notes !
there's not a real reason as to why dakota is so stoic. i just wanted him to act more like his character from criminal minds lmao.
