MIRANDA'S APARTMENT
new york, new york
5pm
due to how far along miranda was, it was advised that she stay at her home in case she were to go into labor. "i cannot believe you had sex with brad pitt at your birthday dinner and didn't to tell us!" miranda complained as she took a bite from her muffin that charlotte had brought over.
"i can't believe you had sex in a public restroom." charlotte said.
"you bad, bad girl." carrie said as she playfully smacked me with an envelope.
"how was he? he looks like he'd be a good kisser." samantha inquired.
i couldn't help but hide my head in embarrassment as my friends bombarded me with questions about brad pitt and his...abilities. it was embarrassing to remember the events that occurred in the bathroom of that restaurant, the events that were currently clouding my mind. "he was good..." i said finally.
miranda smiled at me, "come on, more details than that! we need some good material to get us through these hormonal weeks." she mentioned as she rubbed her stomach gently.
i thought back to our interaction in the restroom, remembering the way his hands roamed my body as we shared our intense moment, the way his hand felt around my neck. i couldn't help myself from blushing as i recalled it.
"she's blushing!" samantha pointed out.
i was embarrassed at how easy it was to blush now. maybe it was because of how recent the interaction was. i looked over at char who shook her head.
"do you guys remember when i dated that actor?" charlotte asked.
"the one who was a total womanizer and was only using you to get in your pants?" carrie recalled. "yeah, i remember."
"that's kind of who brad reminds me of." charlotte said. "i'm sorry but i just haven't heard the best things about him when it comes to relationships."
"she has a point. i've only heard that he's constantly dating." carrie said.
"well maybe that means that he doesn't want to settle down yet. what's the harm in that?" samantha questioned as she leaned back in her chair.
"the harm in that is that jamie wants to settle down. she's been talking about it nonstop." miranda said as she rubbed her feet.
"nonstop?" i said, thinking they were being dramatic.
"nonstop." the four said collectively.
as i walked back to my brownstone, i got a phone call from an unknown number. "hello?" i said as i held the phone up to my ear.
"yes, hello...i'm calling to speak to a jamie boyd." the man on the other line said.
"in regards to?" i asked.
"in regards to a date." he said simply.
i paused in my tracks for a second as i heard the man mention the word date. "i'm sorry, who is this?" i asked him.
"it's brad." he answered smoothly. "so what do you say?"
a smile slowly crept up on my face at the sound of his voice. it made me think back to the events that occurred in the bathroom. however, it also reminded me of what charlotte said, that he wasn't one for serious relationships.
"what do you have in mind?" i asked him curiously.
he let out a hum, "i was leaning towards dinner. wherever you want."
i continued my walk towards my brownstone, contemplating the idea of going on a date with brad pitt. it seemed like a dream, and as much as i was attracted to him, i couldn't help but be hesitant.
"sure. how about dinner tomorrow night?" i asked.
"perfect. how about a location?" he asked.
"21 club restaraunt? it's new and downtown. it's supposed to be super hip and popular." i informed the actor.
brad was silent for a moment before he spoke. "sounds fun. 7pm?" he asked.
"7pm. that's perfect." i told him with a smile sneaking up on my lips.
"i guess i'll see you then, jamie." he said.
"goodnight, brad." i said as i hung up.
i held the phone in my hand and did a small celebration, pumping my fist down.
i had a date with brad pitt.
STREETS OF NEW YORK
new york, new york
5pm
brad and i walked down the streets of new york, heading towards the restaurant. "so you mean to tell me you're a teacher?" he asked.
i looked up at brad as we walked, shaking my head in amusement. "yeah, i'm a teacher. i have a degree in english. don't be so surprised not all of the women in new york are models." i shot at him.
brad chuckled as i teased him and then responded, "if i wasn't an actor i would probably pursue a career in architecture, design, or construction. i have always had an affinity towards building and renovating homes, and i even take an active role in the design process for all of my properties."
i was actually surprised by his answer, as it showed a different side of him. "really? that's not what i expected at all." i confessed, looking up at his handsome face.
brad chuckled in response, "what, expected that i would be wanting to be a model or something?"
i rolled my eyes playfully, "hey, can you blame me? when you look like that i just expect you to be doing modeling gigs on the side or something."
"so you think i'm attractive then?" he said, looking down at me and smirking.
i blushed but i held it together. "oh, don't act coy. you know you're attractive." i shot back, playing it cool. however, he did look good in what he was wearing.
"yes but it's nice to hear you say it," brad said as we continued to walk.
we walked in silence for a few minutes before i spoke again. "so, why an actor?" i inquired.
as we approached the restaurant, we were greeted by a large group of paparazzi, waiting to catch a snap of the actor.
brad seemed completely unfazed and paid them no mind. he continued talking to me about his early years, explaining why he became an actor.
"i developed a genuine passion for the art form from a young age. participating in school plays and community theater," he began.
he held the door open to the restaurant, gesturing for me to enter while he spoke.
i entered the restaurant, feeling a bit overwhelmed by the crowd of paparazzi. however, brad was unbothered and continued recounting his story.
"i ultimately decided to leave college to pursue acting full-time. it was a difficult decision but i was driven by a desire to tell stories and explore different characters through film. i loved films –they were a portal into different worlds for me. but films weren't made in missouri, and so i decided to leave and pursue my passion in los angeles."
"wow." i said although i missed most of what he said because of the loud screaming and bright flashes from the paparazzis.
"you didn't hear a word i said, did you?" brad said as he walked up to the hostess stand. though his face didn't show anything, he seemed to be a bit annoyed.
the hostess looked star-struck by the actor and had to compose herself before asking if we had a reservation.
"a table for two please," brad said, his voice even but i could tell he was starting to get irritated.
the hostess quickly found our reservation and led us to our table, which was in a quiet corner of the restaurant. "here you go." she said with a smile, gesturing for us to take our seats.
"thank you." i said to her as brad pushed open my seat.
once we were sat down and settled in, i looked at brad who was staring at the table.
"you okay?" i asked, noticing his annoyance from before.
brad looked up and sighed, "yeah. just those damn cameras." he said, referring to the paparazzi.
"really? you seemed so unfazed by them when we walked in." i told him.
he shrugged, "i was. until i realized they ruined your train of thought, i mean, i was saying some pretty important things to you and you missed it."
i felt a little embarrassed at the fact that he had paid attention to my obliviousness. "sorry." i muttered. "to be honest they kind of overwhelmed me. i've never been around that many cameras and flashes at one time, ever."
brad looked up at me and his face instantly softened. "hey, it's okay. i'm sorry i got annoyed. i forgot that you're not used to that kind of thing."
he reached out and placed his hand on top of mine, giving it a comforting squeeze.
"tell me what you said before. the thing that i missed." i told him as i rubbed his hand with my thumb.
he chuckled, "okay. well i was telling you about my reason for becoming an actor. i was saying how i developed a love for the art of acting early on in life. my first experiences with acting were through school plays and community theater. i eventually decided to pursue it full-time and left college early. i moved to los angeles because that's where films are made and there's nothing i loved more at the time than films."
"i'm surprised you didn't go the director route." i told him.
brad nodded, "i actually did toy with the idea at one point. but i discovered that i actually preferred acting. but i do have creative input on all of my projects."
just then, a server walked up to our table. "can i start you off with some drinks?" she asked.
brad looked up at the waitress and responded, "we'll take one bottle of your most premium cabernet sauvignon."
i was a bit taken aback by his decision, as i was a bit of a lightweight in the drinking department. i knew i'd be intoxicated by just a glass. but i pushed the thought to the back of my mind as i smiled at the waitress.
"perfect. i'll be back shortly with your wine." she said as she walked away.
"so is acting what your most passionate about nowadays?" i asked.
he nodded profusely, "absolutely. it's practically the only thing on my mind, not to mention that i'm in my prime right now. movie after movie, show after show." he rambled.
"so are relationships not that high up on your list of priorities?" i asked as i'd thought back to what charlotte said.
brad seemed thrown off by the question for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure.
he paused before he responded, "not really. it's hard to find people who want to be in a relationship with me for me, you know? my career kind of takes priority, and i don't want to string a girl along and waste her time." he let my hand go and leaned back in his seat as he finished speaking.
i nodded, understanding where he was coming from. but at the same time, it was a bit disheartening to hear that. it sounded as if he was just okay with living this life of solitude, always having flings and one-night-stands.
i wasn't exactly asking about becoming serious with him after he'd taken me to dinner, but i was at a point in my life where i wanted something substantial.
we'd finished our entrees and moved on to the dessert menu as we spoke about lighter topics. suddenly, the sound of my ringtone cut through our conversation. i instinctively reached into my bag and pulled out my cell.
before i could answer, brad cut me off. "maybe don't answer phones at the table, hm?" he teased with a smirk.
i laughed softly, "trust me, i hate even looking at my phone during dinners. but it's miranda, she's due to have her baby any day now and-" i started to ramble.
"fine." he said quickly as he scanned the menu.
i quickly answered the call and put the phone to my ear, "hey miranda. i'm actually busy right now."
"jamie, hey! it's me, miranda." she said.
i raised my eyebrows in confusion. "i know it's you, miranda. what's going on?"
"well...funny story, i'm in labour." she said which was followed by a laugh. "i'm in a cab right now, headed to the mount sinai hospital."
"what?!" i exclaimed. "oh my god, is anyone with you? is steve with you?"
"you're the first person i called. i can't believe i called you before the baby's father. holy shit, i have to call steve!" miranda exclaimed causing my ear to start ringing.
"okay, okay. i'll meet you there!" i informed her.
as i ended the call, i threw my phone back in my bag and looked up at brad who was eyeing me curiously.
"everything okay?" he inquired, noting the panicked look on my face.
"she's in labour, and i hate to cut this date short but-" i said.
brad looked at me for a moment and nodded, "i'm assuming you're going to go meet her there?"
i nodded, "yeah. i feel bad for leaving but, you understand, right?"
"of course, yeah. i get it, your best friend is having a baby. but if you want me to come with you, i will." he said nonchalantly.
i was stunned for a moment. i wasn't expecting him to be okay with ditching our intimate dinner to meet my best friend at the hospital.
"you'd do that?" i asked, a tiny bit hopeful that he'd say yes.
he looked at me and chuckled, "yeah. i don't mind tagging along. plus, i've never really seen a newborn being brought into the world. now i get to watch it firsthand?"
"if miranda will let you get that close." i told him.
"stay here, i'm gonna go flag down the waitress." he said as he hurried off to pay for our meal.
MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL
new york, new york
9:15pm
brad and i walked into miranda's designated room to see miranda pacing around. "hey..." i said as i walked in.
she stopped pacing and looked between brad and i, "you're brad pitt." she said to him before pointing at me. "and you look pretty. did i interrupt a date?"
brad walked into the room behind me and chuckled sheepishly, "yeah, you kind of did."
i looked back and shot him a look before turning my attention toward miranda. "don't worry about it."
"but what is he doing here?" miranda asked, motioning to brad who was standing awkwardly in the corner of the room.
"what's going on here?" i said looking at the empty bed. "shouldn't you be lying down or biting on a leather strap or something?"
"i'm moving around, trying to get my water to break. the doctor says it's better than having them break it for you." miranda said.
"i thought you were already in labour?" brad chimed in.
miranda rolled her eyes at his comment. "the contractions aren't close enough yet. plus they said first-time mom's tend to take longer than expected."
"longer than expected?" i questioned.
miranda nodded, "yeah. they said i could take up to eighteen hours to even start dialating." she said as she continued walking around the room.
just then carrie came bouncing in, "boy, do i have news." she said before noticing brad. "oh, hello."
"carrie meet brad." i replied.
brad looked at carrie, giving her a small wave. "hi."
miranda had stopped in the middle of the room and had her hands on her hips. she looked at carrie with a look of annoyance. "enough with the look. what's going on."
"well, aidan proposed to me. and i don't know...i freaked and said no." carrie said. "and then big just told me that he's moving to napa." she said as she sat at the foot of miranda's bed.
"so you said no to aidan and then big tells you he's moving across the country. i can't think about this right now." miranda said as she returned to pacing the room, rubbing her protruding belly.
carrie then rubbed miranda's shoulders, "i'm sorry sweetie. i thought that the news would be good to keep your mind off of things."
"listen, when this gets going, don't let anyone get all cheerleadery on me. i don't want any of that "you can do it, push" bullshit." miranda exclaimed before suddenly her water broke, directly on carrie's shoes.
brad looked at me silently, a smirk on his face as he tried to keep from laughing.
i brought my hand up to my face as i desperately bit down on my index finger to keep from letting the laugh out.
carrie looked at both of us as we held in our laughs, she clearly caught on that we were trying not to laugh. she then looked at miranda. "did your water just break on my shoes?"
"i guess the delivery started." i said receiving a laugh from brad.
"great, now i have to walk around the hospital in wet shoes." carrie pouted.
"are you really going to worry about wet shoes while your best friend is in labour?" brad questioned.
carrie shrugged, "maybe." before she looked at miranda who looked pretty annoyed.
"is the contractions getting worse, miranda?" i inquired.
miranda looked at me and nodded, "i'm starting to feel like i'm getting stabbed in the crotch."
"alright, i think it's time to meet the little guy." brad said as he peeked out of the door to find the doctor.
"i bet he'll be very teeny tiny with red hair." i said to miranda.
miranda tried her best to form a smile as she clenched her teeth and groaned. "you think he's going to have my red hair, huh?" she asked through gritted teeth.
i nodded. "hey, did you ever call one ball?" i said referring to steve, the father of her child.
"on his way." miranda told me as she continued to clutch onto her belly.
brad came back with the doctor who told the rest of us to wait outside so he could start the process.
