•Chapter 11 - Quoth the Raven•
Diana made her way to the Stone Circle that afternoon, where James had asked the group to meet. News had gotten round the Resistance that it was Roman Selwyn that was orchestrating the whole thing. It was a revelation they should have seen coming.
When she reached the Stone Circle, she noticed James, Louis and Cecily were already there. She waved, and James nodded back. She could see the toll this was taking on him, his face looked a little grey.
"Afternoon," said Louis in greeting, and she smiled back.
"So what is it we need to talk about?" Said Cecily, piping up
"Actually, Ily, we're waiting for Quinn."
"Quinn? As in Gwendolyn Velasquez? James, do you know who you're talking about? I thought you said this meeting was organisational. I don't recall her being remotely organised."
Louis chuckled at her joke. "May be. But we need her mind. She is a Ravenclaw, you know."
Diana felt a strange turning sensation in her stomach at that. Louis' smile was infectious. It made her giddy inside. And what he said about her mind? That was enough to make anyone blush. Men like that were hard to come by.
She watched as Cecily shrugged, and following the gaze of the two boys, caught sight of a figure with a full head of curls running down the hill. She was certainly a sight to behold.
"Sorry I'm late!" She called jovially, taking a large swig of whatever hot drink she had in her flask, before her bag slipped off her shoulder and fell to the ground. She picked it up, grinning at the gobsmacked faces watching her chaos.
To the average onlooker, Quinn looked like a complete mess. And she was, in a way. But she was a Ravenclaw, which probably meant that behind it all was a very sharp mind indeed.
"So, as McGonagall announced, Hogwarts is hosting Durmstrang and Beauxbatons for the Yule Ball." Started Louis. "They'll be arriving next Friday. There's probably going to be a lot of excitement in the coming weeks."
"We need to keep our eyes peeled for Circle activity." Added James. "Especially because, if I was Selwyn, I'd be looking to get as many of them on board as possible. Which means we need to do the same. And we know that they actually teach Dark Arts at Durmstrang, so that's probably where he'll start."
Diana pursed her lips, wrapping her scarf a little tigher. She didn't understand how they could legitimately teach the Dark Arts. It was asking for trouble, surely? It seemed mad to her, when at Hogwarts they were taught defence against it.
She listened vaguely as Cecily suggested something, her eyes landing on Quinn who was staring at something over Louis' head with a look of great concentration. Tracing her gaze up, she realised she was watching a Magpie, which was perched on the head of one of the stones, its head tilted slightly. Since this whole Circle business, James has become a little more severe, but he wasn't that dull. How she survived her classes with an attention span like that, she did not know.
"We need to make sure Selwyn keeps his hands off the Durmstrang students, add a someone to mark them, speaking in Quidditch terms," Cecily was saying.
"To do that, we need to know who else is working with him." Added Louis.
"How hard can it be? Any psychopath Slytherin would do." Cecily replied.
"What about those boys who chased us on Halloween." Began Diana, trying to put a name to the angry faces that Selwyn had appeared with. That was surely a good place to start. "There was Cook, Drakes, I think, and a couple of others. Can you remember, Quinn?"
"Huh?" Mumbled Quinn as she suddenly returned her attention to the group. Diana watched Cecily give James an eye roll as they waited for her to speak. She had an odd look on her face, which Diana couldn't quite process. Those dark shining eyes which usually was full of mischief had a troubled look to them.
"I think," she began, slowly, as if making an announcement. "I think we should go for a walk. My toes are getting cold!" She announced, and grabbing Diana by the arm, marched down the hill onto the grass. Diana was more than baffled by this, but she enjoyed the sight of the boys jogging after them to catch up.
"The bird was looking at me funny." She murmured into Diana's ear, a vaguely playful note now creeping on to her face. Diana glanced back and watched the magpie fly away in the opposite direction, towards the castle. She didn't question the peculiar little interruption, but merely raised an eyebrow as the boys caught up, and listened as the others suggested ways to keep Selwyn's crowd from growing.
"There's one other thing," said James, scratching his head as they returned to the castle after lengthy discussions, leaning his hand in to the little ball of fire at the end of Cecily's wand which she was using to warm herself up.
"When I spoke to Dumbledore, about what the Centaurs said, he said it wasn't him we should be looking for. Well, it was, but greener and less handsome? I swear to god that man made absolutely no sense."
Diana scoffed, a little too loudly. The eyes in the group travelled straight to her. "God, James. You're such a cliché." She said in defence, looking at Louis for backup. "Oh come on, isn't it obvious?"
James looked perplexed, to say the least.
"He's talking about Albus. You know, your brother? Or had you just forgotten about him in all the fuss?"
It had always amazed her that someone, of fairly high intelligence in the grand scheme of things, could be so utterly stupid. James has always treated Albus like shit, and no one could tell her otherwise. She was sick of it. She loved Albus to bit, but he needed work. He needed sensitivity. James, on the other hand was your shining golden boy, Mr Charisma. And yet when it came to his own brother, it seemed James could hardly find a shred of respect to give him, that was long overdue.
