Literature in School!
If you had watched the episode of 'Thirukkural" on Neeya Naana you would have noticed a guy saying
"Thirukurral school la dabba thaan adichom, appolam arthamum puriyala, arumayum theriyala" is something I feel strongly..
The decision of adding the world famous literatures as a part of syllabus is a good decision, executed in bad way.
The text like Thirukurral or a literature like Silapathigaram is not something which needs to be memorised for marks.
Schools should have rather concentrated on making the children understand the basic meaning of text and teach about it's relevance in the current world rather than making us memorise and rewrite with exact notations.
The poetic beauty or the depth of those texts are something which can't be grasped or understood at that age. The elegance of "Kaamathupaal" can never be felt in 6th-12th standard. Also as much I remember, schools only taught "Aram and Porul" of Thirukurral, but never ignored the Thalaivan Thalaivi segments of Pathu paatu and others. Probably "Inbam" is not supposed to be a part of life.
Also another person rightly pointed "I started reading it in reverse order. Mudhala Inbam thaan venumnu inbatha padichen, seri Inbam epdi varumnu paakum bothu porul thevai nu purinchathu, seri antha porul evanuku da kedaikumnu paatha pothu Evan orthan arathoda irukano avanuku thaan athu kedaikumnu purinchathu"
So, how many of us could decipher this plain-sight meaning in school or have we even be taught that it should be seen this way. Reading things relatively was never a part of most of school education.
Reading those literature now, made me realize how much I have underestimated those texts and how dumb I was when in school and even how much I lacked the sense of appreciation.
Even the Kural like "செல்வத்துள் செல்வம்" with a subtle meaning had lost its subtlety. Listening is good is understood, but why, is something never said. And why it is still relevant after 2000 years is not at all discussed even at high school levels.
In the era where everyone wants to be heard, being a good listener is what makes you stand out was never told, to me atleast.
But keeping this in mind, we can't ignore the fact that, school is the only way to take these literatures to the homes of the people. Language in higher education doesnt have great importance, specially in a professional course, it's simply forgotten. With that kind of system up the line, the option 'either learn here or never be aware' is something scary and better to choose bad than worst.
So, what is the way to make people actually realise its worth and celebrate it for what it is???
Big question with no answer in sight!!
