That Boy

Sophie was biting into a chocolate chip cookie the next afternoon when her doorbell rang. She opened it to see Fitz standing there, looking perfect, as usual, with his hair neatly combed.

" Um, hey?" She mumbled through a bite of cookie. She thought she saw his cheeks tint the slightest bit red.

" I left my jacket here on Saturday. Forgot about it until now," He confessed.

" Oh, right! Let me get it, one sec." She turned around and started scouring the room for it. Fitz followed her in.

" How was detention yesterday?"

" Oh, just fine. Keefe was being a distraction, as usual."

" Sophie....am I a distraction?"

Sophie turned her body half way to look at him from where she was bent over retrieving his jacket and look at him oddly. " Distraction? You? Um, no! Never!"

Fitz cocked his head at her. " Are you sure, cuz-"

" Fitz, trust me on this," Sophie handed him his jacket.

" Thanks. And I will, trust you."

" Yo, Foster, why do you keep your front door open 24/7?" A familar voice called from the hall. " Someone could vandalize your house!"

" Hi Keefe," Sophie said awkwardly as he came into view.

" Oh, fitzy is here?"

" No, I was just leaving." Fitz tucked his jacket over his arm and prepared to leave.

" What? So soon? How about come with me and Foster and show us how good you are at soccer."

Fitz shot a look at Sophie that said hey, why are you playing soccer with him?

" He asked me yesterday," She replied verbably.

" Well, maybe we can all go play sometime. I'm just a bit too swamped with homework today."

" Too bad," Keefe ran a hand through his " famous" hair. " We need a goalie."

A smile curved the corners of Fitz's lips. " Nice one. See you both later."

After Fitz left and shut the door behind him. Keefe slung his backpack off and took the soccer ball out.

" Keefe, please don't bounce that in the house," Sophie warned, " You'll break-"

CRASH!

" Oh no!" Sophie moaned, rushing over to the broken vase.

" Sophie, I didn't mean to!" Keefe exclaimed as she held up the vase.

" This was my mom's favorite vase," She pointed to the item, " She'll never be able to replace it! My grandmother made it for her!"

" Oh no. I'll never be allowed to see you again." Keefe whispered agonizingly.

" Hurry, help me clean up the mess. My parents will be home any minute." Sophie urged. But it was too late.

" Sophie dear, we're home!" Her mother called from the door.

" Um, hi mom!" Sophie yelled back.

" Is Keefe over? We saw his bike in the driveway."

" Yeah, we we're gonna play soccer, but I'm not so sure now...." Her voice trailed off as she saw the look on her mother's face at the sight of the broken vase.

" Sophie Elizabeth Foster Ruewen!" Edaline's voice was high pitched.

" I DID IT!" Keefe yelled.

Edaline's face had knew it, written all over it.

" THAT BOY!" Grady's voice thundered. " HE IS GROUNDED FROM SEEING YOU!"

" But you're not even his parents, please don't do this!" Sophie begged.

" Out." Grady pointed towards the door. Keefe gathered the soccer ball in his bag, slung it over his shoulders, and moped out of the room. When he left, both of Sophie's parents turned to face her.

" We need to talk."
