chapter ten; starbucks life
While it was true that Torryn was no super genius like Raf, she was clever. Of course, the girl was known for failing almost all of her high school classes, but it was far deeper than that. Torryn Wilde failed most of the public school's classes out of pure amusement for herself. However, she was no fool as to think that failing the classes would do her any good in life.
Therefore, while during the day she failed nearly all her classes at Memorial High, she was also taking a special course of classes through the late nights and early mornings which she was acing. Because of this, her transcript for the public schools she had attended would not show up but rather her transcript for the online courses she was taking.
Thankfully, it was Saturday afternoon and Torryn had neither Memorial High nor any work for her online courses to be done. However, after waking up just after four in the morning and getting smashed beyond belief, Torryn was now sluggishly lying around the Autobot base much alike to a zombie.
Even though it was Saturday, Torryn had still driven to the school where she left her car and met up with Smokescreen. The mech was still trying (more like begging) Torryn to give up her address, but Torryn was not willing.
Especially after that current morning when her actions proved just how fatal it could be if Smokescreen did as the other Autobot guardians did and sat outside her home throughout the night. For one, he would have known that she spent the entirety of her morning drunk as a hammer; and two, he would also pick up on the fact that she was addicted to Buspirone.
Now, Smokescreen may have been new to Earth but he would realize that what Torryn was doing was not good. And Torryn did not want to have to put her guardian through that.
Anyway, after she and Smokescreen had arrived back at the base: Optimus, Arcee, Bulkhead, and Bee were all waiting for the young mech's presence. As it would turn out a potential energon mine had been spotted and the team was beginning to run low on the stuff. The team needed the mission to end with success as with their current resources they would not last two more than weeks without more energon.
Smokescreen was excited as other than when he first arrived, this would be his first real mission with everyone. Torryn; despite her slight nerves since Miko had taken it upon herself to explain to her how horrid the Decepticons were, wished Smokescreen the best of luck and made him promise to stay safe.
Though the humans had all missed it, the entire team had noticed the way Smokescreen's face tinged blue at the way his charge fretted over his well-being.
ย ย Once they were gone leaving Ratchet in charge of the base, the humans had taken to the human comfort zone playing a racing video game.
Miko, Raf, and Jack were all taking turns while Torryn sat curled at the other end of the couch falling asleep. She was suffering from a mild hangover, her head pounding as she attempted to go to sleep through the shouts of her friends who were beginning to get competitive over the game.
Ratchet was busy working at scanning the area the team was in trying to find exactly where the energon was inside the cave. He had grown accustomed to the children's noisiness and was now easily able to drown them out. However, if he had decided to take a glance at the children at this very moment his optics would have landed on the suffering Torryn, and being the medic he is, he would have scanned her and come up with the results that she was suffering from a hangover.
That, in turn, would have led to a serious conversation which would have led to Ratchet figuring out about her addiction to Buspirone which then would have made the medic call the others from the team back and then eventually Torryn would have had to admit the reason she was now addicted to Buspirone. Because she could not handle the voices in her head.
But none of that happened because Ratchet was too focused on getting Team Prime to the correct location of the energon for him to bat an eyelash at the children just a few feet away.
Torryn's eyes were covered by large sunglasses, her hair messily done up in a bun while she wore nothing but leggings and an oversized jacket. The perfect comfortable outfit for her to fall peacefully asleep in. Unfortunately, Torryn felt the tingling sensation of her mind as she drifted off, dread pulling at her stomach when the familiar feeling made an appearance.
As she slept, she was going to be pulled into a vision. And when she woke up from both her sleep and the vision she would no doubt wail. Yes, this was not good by any means.
Thankfully, fate seemed to take pity on Torryn as before she could fall asleep, the young boy who she considered one of her closest friends noticed her. Toggling his glasses, Rafael scooted nearer to Torryn, shaking her lightly not realizing just how severe the situation was. No, Rafael did not realize that Torryn was currently passing out over a hangover and was about to be pulled into a vision.
"Hey, Torryn, do you want to play?" The twelve-year-old asked the redhead whose eyes snapped open from under her sunglasses.
Thank god she was wearing sunglasses or someone would have noticed her bloodshot gaze. At least she put on perfume before she left so did not still smell like Rum and Vodka. Sitting up with a yawn, Torryn slowly shook her head gaining the attention of their other two friends.
"No, I'm good," She politely declined as she ruffled his hair causing Raf to let out an annoyed groan.
But she did want an iced coffee. Those were known for settling her hangovers, after all.
Standing up, Torryn cracked her back her gaze wandering around the practically empty base. "But I do want an iced coffee." She said while rolling her shoulders and looking to Miko who rose a brow at her slightly older best friend.
The punk Asian girl carelessly threw the controller to Raf, who caught it before it hit the ground. "Me too!" She chirped while standing up and turning the game console off. "I'm in!"
Jack yelled in frustration at Miko, slamming his hand on the arm of the chair. "But I was winning!" He complained, Miko only shushing him while sashaying to Torryn's side.
"Quiet, Mr. Clean, you're a loser at heart."
"Hey!" Jack scowled at Miko's comment, Raf rolling his eyes while sitting next to Jack and restarting the game console.
"Yeah, we need coffee!" Torryn exclaimed while dragging Miko along with her to stand on the banister in front of where Ratchet was working.
Raf and Jack both looked at each other with a shrug.
"Do you think it's odd that Torryn is wearing sunglasses inside?" Raf questioned, Jack.
"Mmm," Jack only shrugged while choosing his game avatar. "Torryn is a weird person, so no."
They just did not realize how weird she really was.
"Yo, Ratchet, you are the best Autobot medic I have met." Torryn complimented with a smile, the grumpy medic slowly looking up from his computers.
Looking at Torryn with an odd expression, the medic shook his helm. "I am the only Autobot medic you have ever met." He bluntly replied, his look quickly changing into one of suspicion. "Why are you wearing sunglasses inside?" He did not know Torryn well enough to know when she was lying.
Torryn who was not willing to admit that; yes, she was hungover, only shrugged with a small innocent smile toward Ratchet. "Sweet fashion choice?" She said in a questioning tone, Ratchet too busy with trying to focus on the potential energon to delve more into the situation.
Groaning, the Autobot looked away from his computers, giving his attention to the humans girls. "What do you want?" He grumbled in a low tone, seeing the begging look he was getting from both girls.
"Smokescreen and Bulkhead aren't here, so we need a ride to get coffee. Can you pretty please with a cherry on top ground-bridge us to the school so I can drive to Starbucks?" After sixteen years of begging her dad, Torryn had officially mastered the puppy-dog eyes.
"Absolutely notโ" Ratchet began furiously, only for Miko to interrupt him.
"C' mon, you let Bulkhead go with the others even though he's hurt!" She argued passionately, obviously worried for Bulkhead being on the mission with his legs.
"Yeah!" Torryn agreed, smirking as an idea came to mind. "And if you don't let us go, I feel like those relics are looking pretty fun to play with, wouldn't you say so Miko?" The minx turned her head to her Japanese friend who smirked viciously while nodding in agreeance.
"HELL YEAH THEY ARE!"
Ratchet narrowed his optics at them, leaning in threateningly. "You wouldn't dare." He challenged.
"Try us." Miko and Torryn both said together, narrowing their own eyes at the medic.
Oh, Ratchet was so going to get them back for this.
"Fine!" The medic growled while pulling the lever to turn on the ground-bridge with the location of Memorial High.
"Ha! Sweet!" Miko squealed while racing down the stairs, Torryn following after her while grabbing the keys to her Benz on the way.
"See you all later!" Torryn happily called as she followed Miko through the ground-bridge.
Grumbling to himself while powering the portal down, Ratchet exhaled. "Damn girls, going to be the end of me."
โธโธโธ
"I really do love coffee," Torryn mumbled happily while sipping her iced coffee drink.
The pounding headache she once had was already gone and Torryn was now able to flip her sunglasses on top of her head because her eyes were not bloodshot anymore. In all, the girl's hangover was completely gone; coffee truly did work wonders for her.
"Dude, I am so conforming to the life of Starbucks, thanks for getting me hooked." Miko lightheartedly groaned as she sipped her drink, referring to the time that Torryn had first taken Miko to Starbucks and got her effectively hooked.
"You're welcome!" Torryn grinned while unlocking the door to the Benz allowing her and Miko to slip inside.
Torryn decided that she would just drive to the base herself so she did not bother Ratchet. She also did not want to chance the Autobots needing an emergency ground-bridge while her and Miko were using it. Plus, when she wanted to leave she would be able to drive straight from the base to her house which was less than five minutes away.
"Let me pick the music." Miko giggled while grabbing Torryn's phone (which was connected to the Bluetooth) as Torryn herself started up the car.
Torryn hummed as she buckled her seatbelt, laughing loudly when the wild punk girl played a song she had shown Torryn just a few months ago.
"House of Wolves" was an incredibly popular punk rock song loved by many angsty teenagers; including Miko Nakadai and Torryn Wilde.
"Fuck yeah!" Torryn laughed, turning the knob causing the music to blare throughout the car.
Miko laughed, both of the girls singing wildly to the song while dancing in their seat (something Torryn should not have been doing as she was driving).
As Torryn pulled out of the Starbucks with the location of the base on her mind, she could not help but wonder how her father was doing. It had been a solid week since they last spoke so Torryn would need to give him a call later.
The two girls sat sipping their drinks and singing loudly to the punk rock music, Torryn driving an honorable five miles over the speed limit as they reached the edge of Jasper's town limits.
"Oh!" Torryn happily cried, taking one hand off the wheel when a certain song began playing. "I love this song!"
Booming bass filled the car, the voice of Lil' Wayne and Birdman pumping through the pounding speakers. The car seemed to vibrate as it drove, Miko nodding along to the beat from where she sat next to Torryn. While Miko did not listen to hip-hop rap often, she did not have a problem with it. After all, in her biased opinion, hip-hop and rap were way better than a genre like country.
Torryn, on the other hand, absolutely loved rap and hip-hop, and when the two were combined like this song was, it was even better. You could possibly blame it on the many parties she had attended throughout the majority of her teen life. While it was true that Torryn had very recently begun to slow down in her partying, before that, the girl was very much a party-animal who attended some sort of get together every weekend.
Sticking her tongue out alike to some sort of Miley Cyrus wannabe, Torryn bopped her body to the beat. The car swerved slightly with Torryn's newfound distraction, the redhead nor Japanese exchange student fazed by this. Swerving tended to happen when Torryn was driving.
"Ooh," Miko's eyes lit up at the sight of the last gas station before the end of town. "Should we stop and bring some snacks back?" She questioned Torryn, who nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, I'm sure Raf and Jack will appreciate-" Torryn would have finished her sentence but at that moment the car swerved to the left.
Now, when Torryn was driving, the car often swerved; however, it was never as dramatic as what Torryn had currently done. Torryn yelled as she fought with the wheel to straighten it out, Miko crying as she was thrown into the side of the door.
"Holy shit!" Torryn was quick to turn the pounding music down until it was just simple fuzzy background noise. "Who the hell is that?" Torryn looked through the rearview window, glowering at the sight of four (rather creepy looking) purple and black cars right on her ass.
Judging by their build, they were quick cars but they were not built for racing. It seemed that they were made to look nice, not to race. Torryn was willing to bet if it came down to it, her black Mercedes was quicker.
Cursing under her breath, Miko rolled down the window as Torryn sped up causing the cars following to speed up as well. Sticking her head out the window, Miko looked behind them ignoring the dust that got into her mouth, the sight of the cars confirming her suspicions. Torryn continued to look at the deserty view in front of her as they had just made it out of Jasper and back into the rearview mirror where the four unnamed shady cars were tailing them.
Pulling her head back in, Miko did not bother to roll the window back up as she turned to Torryn. "Yeah, we're probably going to die." She spoke nonchalantly causing Torryn to choke on her breath.
"What!"
Poking her head out once again, Miko squeaked at the sight of the cars gaining on them. Coming back in, Miko jerked her thumb behind them. "Those are definitely Decepticons."
"Aw hell," Torryn groaned while stepping on the gas causing the Benz to go lurching forward at speeds even Torryn had not hit before.
Watching the speed meter hit one-hundred, Torryn looked behind her to see the Decepticons further behind but still keeping up. "There's a gun in the glovebox!" No more had to be said from Torryn as Miko quickly pulled out the gun, sticking her head back out the window.
"Suck on this 'Cons!"
Torryn tore up the asphalt while shakily trying to keep ahead of the Decepticons, and Miko hung the upper half of her body out the window while shooting at the Decepticons behind them.
"Ha! How did that feel!" The Japanese exchange student laughed as she shot out one of the tires 'cons causing the car to come to screeching a halt leaving only three vehicles in pursuit of them.
And then, like a beacon sent from heaven, Torryn's phone began ringing, the familiar ringtone that was Cherry Pie reverberating around. Moving her gaze to the center console, Torryn's eyes lit up at the sight of Ratchet calling. Quickly, Torryn used the buttons on her wheel to accept the call, Ratchet's voice drifting through the speakers.
"Torryn, there has been Decepticon readings spotted in the area, you and Miko must return to the base now."
"Oh okay, are the others back yet?" Torryn offhandedly questioned, seeming to forget about the issue at hand.
"Yes, they arrived with a substantial amount of energon five minutes ago." Just as Ratchet said that Torryn shrieked jerking the car to the right in order to avoid one of the Decepticons bumping her rear.
Miko yelped as she was nearly tossed out of the car, the girl gaining her balance shooting a small glare toward Torryn.
"Dude!" She complained.
"Sorry."
Despite the dire situation, it seemed Miko and Torryn were having an outlandishly fun time with it.
"What was that?"
Both girl's attention snapped to Ratchet whose voice had turned slightly panicky.
Torryn rolled her own window down, sticking her head outside. "Suck my non-existent balls, dickwads!" She shouted, the wind causing for her hair to fall out of its bun, the hair tie lost to the desert.
Pulling herself back in the car, Torryn ignored the way her red mane now fell crazily down her face, pushing the pedal to the medal until she was hitting just over 120.
"WHAT IS HAPPENING?" This time Ratchet shouted through the Bluetooth.
Both Miko and Torryn glanced at each other nervously, before Miko was the one who finally bit and gave in.
"We have Decepti-creeps on our tail!" Miko wailed while rapidly firing the gun behind her until it ran out of bullets barley two-seconds later. "Shoot, it's out!"
Torryn cursed, deciding now was a good time for a ground-bridge. "We need a ground-bridge!" She shouted, hearing Ratchet swear before a green swirling vortex appeared in all its glory just in front of them.
With no hesitation, Torryn sped straight through the bridge, the portal closing behind them and leaving the Decepticons in their dirt.
The black Mercedes Benz which was luckily untouched throughout the entire chase sped into base holding within it a screaming Torryn and Miko. Miko clutched onto to Torryn while Torryn only clutched the wheel, her eyes wide as she desperately stomped on the breaks.
Thankfully, the breaks on the car were good, as the car came to a screeching stop, sliding along the floor of the base.
Both females were panting, shock radiating throughout their entire bodies. Yes, that just happened.
Slowly, both girl's lips curved into similar grins, Miko holding her hand out causing Torryn to high-five it. "We're fucking awesome." Torryn giggled as Miko quickly put the gun back into the glovebox, winking at her friend as she did so.
With a grin, Torryn and Miko exited the car, Torryn making a side-note to reload it later.
"What the scrap happened?" Arcee exclaimed, causing both Miko and Torryn to become aware of the now full base.
Raf and Jack stood at the rails, their eyes wide in fright and relief at the girl's returning back safely. Bee, Bulkhead, and Smokescreen stood off to the side, Smokescreen and Bulkhead internally freaking out for their charges. Arcee stood with Optimus and Ratchet flanking her sides, all of their optics revealing the panic they had felt for the tiny humans.
Even Optimus who normally remained calm in these situations had felt a tug of fright for both the safety of Miko and Torryn. Though Torryn was still new, he could not help but care for her as he did with the other three humans. And Primus forbid anything happened to them while under his and the rest of the teams' watch.
Shaking her head, Torryn came up with the only answer on her mind.
"Starbucks life, you know?"
