school ended and eloise was at her locker, putting her english book along with her notebook and pencil case before closing it again and jumping at the person standing behind it.
"oh my god.." she mutters, her hand over her immortal heart as she had her eyes closed due to the sudden jump, opening her eyes again she looks at him, "how can i help?"
"i wanted to ask if i could get your number." paul asks her, amused how she jumped from his sudden appearance.
she nods her head slightly, turning around and walking to the parking lot as she answers, "and why would i give it to you?"
he looks dumbfounded at her as he walks the same pace as her, "well given that i'll be hanging out with you on friday i thought.."
walking down the steps of the entrance she sees a black truck waiting for her, "you thought what paul?"
"i thought i could get your number now rather than later." he finishes his sentence.
she chuckles, "sure." getting her phone from the back pocket of her shorts she hands it to him.
he types his number inside while she caught the eye of jared, his face holding a look of disbelieve as paul casually types his number inside and gives her a smile, handing the phone back to her, "text me when you have time so i can save it."
she nods her head, "will do. see you around paul."
with that she turns around and walks to sam's truck instead of jacob's, the older boy stood by the drivers door as he gave her tremble a kiss before the two exchanged smiles, "how was your day?"
she chuckles, going around the hood of the car before opening the passenger door, "quite the event happened."
sam pulls out of the parking lot and towards la push, the lie that she would go to the vet with him for his dog long forgotten as both jared and paul wear a confused and almost jealous look on their faces, jacob had a confused one while quil and embry made bets as to if eloise was really together with sam or if she wasnt.
since sam was still alone in the pack eloise offered her help in patrolling, just in case anything were to happen to which sam agreed after long debate.
it was around 6 in the evening when the two met up again, both going to his place as they would have dinner together - billy knew about that already and having nothing against that.
while sam was cutting some onions for the pan so she could fry some meat in the pan, eloise was testing the noodles.
"you think you'll ever imprint?" she asks him randomly, slurping the noodle and nodding approvingly.
"i hope so. i had to break up with leah, she hates me now and i bet she's talking about it to her friends and cousin all the time." he responds, almost cutting in his finger which eloise saw.
she huffs, walking up to him and taking the knife out of his hand, nudging him to the side with her hips she says, "well whoever it is should never let you cut. now sit down and look cute as usual."
he chuckles, "if you say something like that outside people will talk about you." he says, sitting down at the table, watching her as she was cooking their dinner.
she rolls her eyes, "as if they dont do that already." she scoffs, "even quil and embry think that we're together and i bet you ten that a lot more do as well."
he laughs at that, "you know its nice to have someone eat dinner with me." he confesses to her.
"if you want i can ask billy if i could move in." she offers but adds an after thought, "never mind that. then people will really think we're together."
"well i havent imprinted on you." he offers her as a joke.
she lets out a breathy laugh, "imprints dont have to be romantically, it all depends on the girl you imprint on. what she wants with you matters the most."
he nods his head, "right. i forgot about that."
she sighs, "but your thinking was correct in some way, all the shifters i met had a romantically relationship with their imprint. only the ones that were too young didnt."
the two were silent for a minute, only the sound of the boiling water with the noodles was heard and the cutting that eloise did before she put the onions in the pan, adding some oil and letting it frizzle a bit before adding the meat as well.
"so why did paul lahote look after you with that jealousy in his eyes?" he breaks the silence.
"cmon sam." she huffs, her cockiness showing, "i am hot. we all know that, its in my genes."
he hums, not really believing her, "if you say so."
"fine." she tells him, "i'm hanging out with him on friday after work. this girl caught me staring at him and dared to speak to him."
he gives her a grin, "and why did you stare at him?"
"he's attractive. but i spaced out in calc class." she tells him honestly, "besides, if he doesent imprint on me then it would be in the vain anyways so i try not to do relationships with any of the boys."
"so what? when one phrases you just avoid eye contact forever?"
she nods her head in thought, "worth a try."
he sighs, shaking his head, "you know, you should be a bit more open to such topics. regardless if he imprints, the person could want a platonic relationship."
her back was to him as she rolls her eyes, turning the meat over as she responds snarkly, "well he shouldnt. none of the boys should. i'm not a good person and i'll never be."
"why? because you killed your parent when you thought they killed your brother?" he asked back.
she takes a breath, trying to keep herself calm or sam would get angry and phrase in the house, "yeah. i killed them for revenge because i thought they killed my older brother. but those werent the only ones."
"lou, no one would care, its your past and it was for a reason i'm sure."
eloise huffs out pathetically, "thats not it.. i did a hell of a big thing a few decades ago, i'm not proud of it and it.. it was just horrible, why would anyone love me after they hear about it?"
turning the stove off she removes the pan, putting the meat on two plates before draining the water from the noodles and putting some on both plates as well, getting the ketchup out of the fridge she serves his plate to him and puts the ketchup on the table before getting her own plate and sitting down.
"what..? what did you do lou..?" he asks quickly, getting a bit worried since she never told about that.
"nothing!" she quickly answers, "its not that bad! at least i hope it is.."
"you're tense again, lou." he notices with concerned eyes, "cmon.. let me take you somewhere."
she looks up to him as he stands up, putting his food into tuber ware before taking her plate and doing the same, "huh? i was eating!"
he rolls his eyes, taking her hand as the two walk down the path through the woods before they arrive at the beach, "i also come here when i cant sleep."
"and then what?"
"i just stare at the waves, but now that im not alone we can do a fire to keep you warm and just sit in silence." he offers her with a small smile.
her eyes tear up a bit, not knowing how to respond to that as it was the sweetest someone did for her the past six-hundred years, "thank you.." she whispers.
he just gives her a soft smile before the two get some firewood and he lights it up with a lighter he brought, the two sitting in silence as they sat on the beach.
she turns her head to him, admiration in her eyes. she was really proud of him even tho she doesent say it out loud. being the first wolf to phrase must be hard on him and she couldnt have thought of someone better than him.
she felt closer to him after the few weeks he phrased and - dare she say - she felt closer to him than her actual brother that didnt show much interest towards her when he was still alive.
friday came in with the wind, eloise was full with everything. work. school. friends. she couldnt get a break as she also had to tutor a young girl that was in middle school.
she hadnt gotten a good sleep at billy's and went to the beach most of the time until she fell asleep there and sam found her when he patrolled and got her to his place so she could sleep more comfortable.
not only that but also jared cameron was showing signs of phrasing soon as well.
sighing she sits down at a empty table at lunch, her head hiding in her arms as she tries to fall asleep, lunch wasnt her priority right now anyways.
that was until she felt eyes on her and lifted her head to look who it was, no surprise to her when paul lahote sat in front of her with a grin, "so.. i'll still pick you up at 5?"
she nods her head before hiding it in her crossed arms again, his eyes held sudden worry as he speaks again, "we can change the day if you want to rest?"
she sighs, lifting her head up again and sees the worry, guilt sitting in her eyes for thinking she would've snapped at him right now, "no its alright. i uh.. called in sick at work so we can hangout after school directly if you want."
he nods his head, "sure, you want to go to the beach? cliff diving maybe? we can get snack and marshmallows and start a fire later in the evening if you want."
she gives him a soft smile, "sure, we.. could do that yeah."
"dont you want to eat?" he asks her, gesturing to his tray that held his lunch, "you can have the chicken if you want, i'm not a big fan of it."
she eyes him not convinced, "you're telling me you dont like chicken?"
he nods his head, he was lying. he loved chicken but if she wanted it, he would give it to her.
she slowly reached her arm forwards, taking one before she eats it, leaning her head on her arm as she stares at him, "you can ask your question."
his eyes went wide for a second before growing normal again, "where did you live before coming to la push?"
"greece, athen." she answers, taking another piece of chicken and dips it in sweet-sour-sauce, "my parents lived in tacoma before moving there after i was born."
that was the truth, if she were to compare the lands eight-hundred years ago with the ones right now then it would be tacoma.
"really? i'm from tacoma as well!" he tells her, giving her a grin as they had something in common.
she smiles, "that sounds cool, are you living with your mom?" she asks him softly.
he nods his head hesitantly, "listen, the rumors arent true about my mom. she's just working late hours at the hospital and is home for the day most of the time."
"paul." she stops him before he could continue, "i dont care what the rumors say, i make my opinion on my own, with what i see and hear from the person directly."
he nods his head, "yeah, if only everyone would be like you."
she chuckles, "well people think i have a thing with sam going on."
he got quiet and she looks at him, "oh cmon, you as well? there is nothing. i just did something shitty and he helped me out. he's like a older brother to me."
he nods his head, a smile making its way on his face and she felt bad suddenly. it was a smile she saw a few decades ago as well. she saw it six-hundred years ago and she saw it four-hundred years ago.
should she crush his hopes now? or should she do it later when they're alone. she came to the conclusion to not embarrass him here, at lunch, in front of the whole school.
the two meet up after school, out of the corner of her eye she sees a angry jared before she arrived at paul's royal blue truck. the paint was chipped off a bit but she didnt mind, instead she smiled at him and got in his passenger seat before the two drove off to get some snacks - not the store she worked at.
she did text sam that jared got angrier than usual the past days - since she talked to paul on monday - and that he should keep an eye out because she couldnt and was hanging out with paul.
the two arrived at the beach as they left all their stuff in his truck, walking down the somewhat sandy beach next to each other, pushing the other and laughing around before she suddenly turned serious, "last one at the edge of the cliff will buy lunch on monday!!"
with that she sprinted as quick as she could the makeshift stairs up that lead to the cliff and laughs when she was already there. just as she was about to arrive he caught her by the waist, holding her back as he laughs at her misery.
"not fair! i was here first!"
"you werent."
"i so was! why did you hold me back?"
she scoffs, "your such a sore looser."
he laughs at that, "only for you."
her eyes widen a bit, glad he couldnt see her face as she turned in his hold, pushing him away playfully and walking to the edge. he followed her and pushed her before quickly grabbing her arm, trying to scare her which he succeeded in as she screamed at the scare.
"what the hell!?" she yells before she laughs, "i dont want my clothes to get wet!"
he was confused and his face turned red as she suddenly kicked her shoes off, followed by her shorts before she removed her shirt, leaving her in her underwear as she teased him, "what? cat got your tongue?"
she laughs out, pointing at him as his face turned red in embarrassment before he removed his shirt as well, kicking his shoes off and removing his jeans as well.
her laughing stops and she just stares at him before she heard his laugh, "well, cat got your tongue?"
her nose crinkled up and her eyes were shut tightly before she turned around and huffed, "i dont know what you mean."
when he walks to stand next to her at the edge she looks up to him while he looks down to her, both matching grins as she walks a few steps backwards, wanting to get more of a run to not get hurt at the cliff's edge.
he went out of her way before he watched her run forward, doing a somersault before her she was gone in the water. her laugh was heard up to him as she swam to the beach, watching him as he took a run as well and jumping in head first.
the two did that for a while until they decided to stop and start the fire and eat their snacks. he got a towel out of his truck and placed it over her shoulder as she watched him get some firewood and start the fire for them.
a soft smile was on her face as she observes him, if she wouldnt know better then she would call this love but unfortunately she knew it wasnt, she would know if it was really love and the fact he could phrase soon and imprint on someone else, she didnt want to take that risk.
after a while the two were dry again and she had her clothes on again with paul as well, he held the two branches in his hand that held their marshmallows over the fire while she texted billy and sam for an update on jared.
she sets her phone to the side before looking to paul, taking her branch again and staring at the fire, "paul, i dont- i dont want to crush any hope that you had but.. if you thought that this would go beyond a friendship.. i'm really sorry."
he nods his head, "its okay, maybe we are better off as friends? maybe its fate?" he adds the last question to lighten the mood and it did when she laughed.
"well you're my platonic soulmate then." she tells him, grinning at him as he returned it.
"we're best friend then? because soulmates tell each other everything and are very close, just like best friends."
she nods her head, "then we are best friends."
and so the two had formed a very close friendship that he thought he didnt deserve.
nonetheless he didnt know what she would have in store for him and he didnt know that his normal life would soon crush.
