chapter one:
the beginning

"You've never seen halloween! How the hell are you my best friend and you've never seen the Halloween movies!". The girl's voice sounded soothing, like clockwork he'd hear her speak clearly as he held tightly onto his phone. The conversation always took its course, but in the end he always let her say the last goodbye before he called it for the night.

The boy couldn't help but chuckle as he leaned back on his pillows, he could hear the loud noises of his father in the room across the hallway. He'd hear the beer bottles before they even smacked down into the wooden table, he'd imagine it was so many.

"I mean I never got around to making the time for it, and plus they just made a new one so I figured I'd wait until they finished it before I watch".

He heard the soft sound of Tara's laugh as she walked around her kitchen "I'm making you watch it next time you come over, all of them and yes! Even the shitty ones they attempted to make decent".

He smiled as he looked outside his window "okay that sounds promising, but only if you watch Star Wars with me, it could be a fair deal".  It was silent for a moment and then he heard the loudness of a phone ringing "oh I didn't even know this thing ringed, wonder if it's someone from moms group".

"You can call me back if you want, it's not like I'm doing anything anyways, we can discuss Star Wars". He sat up from his bed "okay, I'll be like five minutes" the call ended and he set his phone down.

The house felt more quiet and it made him sigh deeply as he walked out of his room. He wasn't sure what time it was but he knew it was getting late and he'd likely stay up all night on the phone once Tara called back. Except as he did his normal night time routine his phone didn't ring once.

He frowned deeply as he grabbed his phone out of his pocket, not a single message or call was received and it worried him. She never ignored him, and half the time she fell asleep she would let him know before she even decided to sleep.

He wanted to throw up but he didn't let himself as he messaged her. He asked if she was okay and then after that he laid down and waited for a response, he never received one. Eventually he fell asleep and he had completely forgotten about it all together.

When he woke up it was from the loud knock on his front door. It nearly gave him a heart attack as he flew up in his bed, rubbing at his eyes as he walked towards the door. "What is it now!" he pulled the door open and then he frowned "sheriff Judy? What's going on? Did my dad get into a fight at the bar again?".

She sighed softly "we have to bring you in for questioning Joshua, Tara Carpenter was attacked last night and you were the last known person who's  contacted her phone and home phone".

"What! Is she okay? I texted her last night but she never answered, what's going on... I don't understand". He walked outside and Judy smiled sadly "even if you didn't do it, we still need to bring you in Joshua, I can't give you details but Tara is alive and recovering in the hospital".

He couldn't believe this, one second he was on the phone joking with Tara and now she was in the hospital. He would have objected to going with Judy, saying he didn't have anything to do with this. Yet somehow he went anyways, he'd be factored out of this issue and he'd go and see Tara the second he could.

"Phone records show your phone number was the one used to make the call on the home phone, we're getting our tech crew a day to prove if it's real or not. Even if it's proven the call wasn't you it's still looking really bad for you Joshua, all the evidence is pointing right at you. The phone records, the weapon with your finger prints and we have two witnesses who claim they've seen you sneak into Taras home before through her bedroom window, which gives us the answer on how you got inside to attack her".

Joshua couldn't breath, the photos and the bloody knife in front of him looked so fake yet somehow he did this? "What! But I was never even with Tara last night, we talked on the phone for four hours and then she got a call so she hung up. She didn't call back so I got worried, but I never went to her house and I definitely didn't do this!".

He pushed the photos off the table "I want a fucking lawyer, I'm not saying anything else until I have a lawyer present". Judy sighed "Joshua, you gotta think real hard on this, you're a good kid but all fingers point to you. You could face serious consequences if you're lying to me right now".

He leaned back "look at my lips lady, I want a lawyer!  And until I have one in this room with me. You're not getting shit, because honestly you're insane if you'd think I'd hurt my best friend, I mean Tara's my only friend in this stupid town. Why would I try killing her? That doesn't make any sense".

Judy stood up "look, I'll have an officer bring you something to eat and I'll get a hold of a lawyer. But I can't promise you'll get out of this one, even if somehow you're let go, you'll still be the number one suspect of this incident".

She walked out of the room and he groaned in annoyance as he tugged at the handcuffs around his wrist. "I can't believe this shit" of course his life would go to absolute destruction after a single night.

He didn't even understand how his finger prints got on the knife, it was taunting him as it sat on the table in front of him. He looked at it with confusion as he poked at the bag to see it clearly.

"That's my knife, from my kitchen... well shit that just makes this more complicated, who the heck is trying to frame me for this". He sighed as he pushed the knife off the table, it made a weak thud as the door opened. One of the officers set down a donut and a cup of coffee onto the table "this is all we had".

Joshua looked at the donut and coffee with disgust, he couldn't eat not after he saw what happened to Tara. "Thanks" he saw the way the man looked so hesitant to be near him, "sheriff Judy will be back later, for the meantime you'll remain in here while your lawyer drives over. You'll likely be moved to a cell after we've processed you in the system".

Joshua looked at the donut when the man walked out of the room "I'm so screwed, god damn it". He smacked the donut off the table as he leaned into his hands, his life was ruined.
