CHAPTER THIRTEEN, space elevator

"Heads up, we got a visitor coming." Donald said, as soon as he stepped foot into the common area. The five members of the bionic team turned their heads at his announcement, leaving the students to continue with whatever they were doing.
Adam gasped. "Is it a government agent, coming to take us away?" He wondered, causing a few of them to react with exasperated expressions. That happened around a year ago, when the team also fixed their situation with the FBI, once the bionic super-humans eventually proved to them and the world that they weren't dangerous, and they were there to help people who needed it. So, if that was the case, they would be very concerned as to what might've happened, or who did what, to catch the attention of the authorities now.
"Our secret's been out for a year. Why would they take us away now?" Chase questioned Adam.
"Let's just say, I've done some things." He looked rather suspicious, before walking off as everyone watched him in bewilderment.
"I don't even wanna know." Emilia muttered, and shared a look with Chase, who cracked a smile at that.
"It's my chief scientist, Dr. Ryan." Donald shared with the group, informing them on who's going to be visiting. "He is by far the smartest man I have ever worked with."
Chase had his arms crossed over his chest, when he pointedly cleared his throat. "Ahem!" Clearly offended by his father's compliment towards the chief scientist, saying he was the smartest man heย has ever worked with, when he was right there.
Donald looked back at Chase, almost as if he had realised what he just said. "Oh, you are right. I'm sorry." He patted the boy's shoulder, like he was apologising for his mistake. Wrong. The inventor turned back to the others with a bright smile on his face, gesturing to himself. "I am the smartest man I have ever worked with." He giggled, before starting to walk backwards in the direction of the hydra-loop, with the others in tow. "Dr. Ryan was head of his class at MIT, and he's been Davenport Industries' employee of the month twice. That's never happened. Well, except, of course, for me."
"You named yourself employee of the month at your own company?" Leo asked his step-father, who smiled and nodded. "I think you love you a little too much."
"And who's here surprised by that? Absolutely no one." Emilia retorted, receiving amused chuckles from the others beside her, as Chase wrapped his arms around her neck from behind, and the girl latched her hands onto his arms.
"It's not because I love myself. It's because I'm better than everyone else."
Once Donald said that, the hydra-loop doors just opened and Dr. Ryan stepped out, with his arms raised in the air, in greeting. "Hey, hey! Wassup, dudes?" He fist bumped Donald, and stopped in between Bree and Chase, glancing between Bree and Emilia. "Lady dudes."
Bree directed her eyes over to Donald, pointing at Dr. Ryan, and scoffed out a chuckle. "This is your esteemed chief scientist?" She questioned, almost like she couldn't believe it. Donald nodded, while the others pulled faces.
Dr. Ryan raised his finger in the air, adding on to what Bree said. "And employee of the month. Got the parking space and everything. I don't drive, but my mom uses it when she picks me up. That's right, twenty-eight, still living rent-free in my parent's basement." He glanced between the two girls and arched a brow. "Jealous?"
"No." Bree deadpanned, and walked away.
"Not one bit." Emilia chimed in, and gave Chase a soft squeeze on his hand, letting him know to pull his arms away, so she could walk over and help Bree at the cyber-desk.
"Dr. Ryan is here to construct and test Davenport Industries' new space elevator." Donald said, and Adam made his way back over to the group, after he heard what he was doing.
"Space elevator?!" Chase seethed.
"You see, this is why people are out of shape. You should be building space stairs." Adam proposed they do that instead.
As the monitor switched on, their Space Elevator diagram popped up on the screen as the scientist explained. "It's a highly advanced transport that climbs a tether all the way to our space stations. Since it's held up by gravity, we can resupply without ever using a rocket." He paused and took notice of Chase huffing in anger. "Chase, you look confused and/or constipated. Do you have a question?"
"Yes!" Chase finally snapped, pointing to the man next to him as he looked at Donald, with his eyes filled with frustration. "Why is he working on this? The space elevator was my project. I've been working on it for years."
"Yes, but I had to pass it off so you could focus on being a mentor." Donald informed him, speaking in a calmer tone. "Don't worry, Dr. Ryan's been working off your research."
"You gave him my research?!" Chase exclaimed.
Dr. Ryan nodded. "Yes, and it's been very helpful. It's always good to know what's wrong, so you can find what's right."
Chase hung his head back, shaking his head. "Oh, no." He scoffed, stepping over to Donald to turn him away from the scientist. "Mr. Davenport, you can't let him do this."
"Check his resume, Chase." Donald suggested, as a way to reassure him. "He's one of the greatest minds of our time."
Dr. Ryan suddenly giggled, making everyone turn to the man. "I just designed a photo app that puts your face on a dog's butt." He smiled, turning his phone around to show them.
Adam stood behind the chief scientist, taking the phone out of his hand so he could see the picture edit of Chase. "Oh. No argument here," He shook his head with a grin. "this guy is a genius."
โโโ ๏ฝฅ ๏ฝก๏พโ: *.โฝ .* :โ๏พ. โโโ
Emilia rested her head on the arm of the couch in the Mentors Headquarters, while scanning a page of the book she was currently reading. Though, it was hard to concentrate, when the chief scientist, Dr. Ryan, was playing the air guitar. She was only there in the first place, just in case Chase needed calming down again, which she could understand if she was in his shoes. She could agree it wasn't fair.
"What is he doing?" Chase questioned.
"Shh." Donald interrupted him. "It's his process."
Chase sighed. "This isn't fair." He pointed out to the Davenport man. "You can't let him build my elevator without me."
"You know what?" Donald placed his hand on the boy's shoulder. "You're right." He nodded, before diverting his eyes back to Dr. Ryan. "Dr. Ryan?"
"I'm in the bridge, I'm in the bridge." He jumped off the rock, wanting to continue playing the air guitar and finish without being interrupted, until he finally stopped. "Thank you, thank you. Proceed."
Yes. Please do, before he starts doing the flipping air drums. "Oh... I want Chase to join you on the project." She heard Donald tell the chief scientist, earning Chase to scoff before chiming in. "Thank you."
"As your assistant." Donald added.
"What?!" Chase raised his voice. Emilia sighed at this, before placing the bookmark in between the new pages she was on and closed her book. "This guy is a joke." Chase continued, gesturing over to Dr. Ryan. "I bet he doesn't know anything about tensor equations."
"Not much, just that..." He began, as Emilia came over, approaching from behind Chase. "Tensors are used to represent correspondences between sets of geometric vectors for applications in Newtonian physics."
Chase crossed his arms over his chest, scoffing at his words when he was proven wrong. "Roughly."
"Come on, Chase." Donald tried to mediate. "You guys are gonna make a terrific team."
"Don't worry, assistant dude." He interjected. "I'll make sure you're very involved in the process. I'll even let you play air drums." Dr. Ryan sent him a smile, playing the air drums, making Emilia hang her head back, rolling her eyes and groaned. "Oh, come on!"
"Quick, catch my sticks!" Dr. Ryan said, throwing the invisible sticks over to Chase, who caught the non-existent drumsticks by surprise. He widened his eyes, looking over at his father who joined in, playing the air guitar with Dr. Ryan. Chase threw the invisible drumsticks down, grabbing Emilia's hand before dragging her out of the room.
"Wait, where are we going?" Chase didn't answer the girl, letting her figure it out on her own while he pulled her along.
โโโ ๏ฝฅ ๏ฝก๏พโ: *.โฝ .* :โ๏พ. โโโ
The students and mentors โ excluding Chase, all joined together in the training area. Donald stood at the front, with Leo and Perry next to him. This was the moment where the students were about to receive new colored shirts, according to what level they have now moved up to. Donald started to address the students in the room, "As we come to the end of our first scholastic term here at the Honorable Donald Davenport World Famous Bionic Academyโ"
"Pretty sure that's not the name." Emilia chimed in to remind him, and Adam and Bree both shook their heads in agreement.
"Pretty sure you didn't pay for it." Donald looked away, missing the expression on Emilia's face, as she dug her tongue against her cheek, which held her back from responding. She flickered her eyes over to Bree, who shook her head and rolled her eyes at her father's ego. "After reviewing all your performances, I'm happy to say that you will all be moving up a color level." Everyone applauded at the news, watching as students made their way over to Perry to grab their new t-shirt. "And Leo, will be moving up two color levels." The applause resumed.
Leo grabbed his new orange marked t-shirt from Perry, and faced everyone with a bright smile on his face. "Thank you, thank you. You know, as a young boy, I never dreamed I'dโ"
Donald rolled his eyes, cutting him off. "Oh, just put the shirt on."
Leo did as he said, and pulled the t-shirt over his head. However, he, as well as everyone else in the room, couldn't help but notice the shirt was quite oversized. He pursed his lips, staring down at the clothing that was too big for his frame. "It's a bit big, don't you think?"
"Oh, my bad." Perry interjected, once she seemed to remember the source of the problem. "Got cold last night, so I wore it to bed. I must've stretched it in my sleep."
"Why didn't you get a blanket?" Leo asked.
The woman shrugged. "'Cause I wanted to stretch your shirt." She argued, before latching her hand onto the bottom of the orange marked t-shirt and dragged him out of the training area.
Donald headed over to the other side of the room where Adam, Bree and Emilia were standing, and pulled them aside. "Guys, I didn't want to say this in front of the other students, but not everyone passed."
Adam sighed. "I've been expecting this. And I've already written my letter of resignation." He said, and pulled a white envelope out from underneath his mentor jacket.
"Not you." Donald slapped his hand on the letter, telling Adam to retract it. He pointed his finger in another direction, and elaborated the mentors on the matter. "There's still one student stuck at the lowest level: yellow."
Bree furrowed her brows. "Who?"
Before Donald could answer, Bob walked into the room, still wearing his yellow marked t-shirt, and waved his hand as he passed by. "Yellow!"
Emilia and Bree frowned. The latter pointed over in the direction where the blond-haired teenager had just gone in. "Wait, Bob is failing?"
Emilia's frown deepened. "But, he tries so hard."
"Yeah, but he's just not tough enough." Donald responded. "I'm worried he doesn't have the fight it takes to become a bionic hero." He paused, and raised his finger in the air. "Wait, watch this." He turned to everyone, shouting, "Guys, we're under attack!"
All the students in the training area got into their fighting positions, bar one โ as Bob ran straight out the room, screaming. "Huh." Emilia tilted her head in thought. "That reminds of that time when Leo and I first met you guys and Chase in the lab, and he justโ ran off screaming to get away from you guys... into the next room." She pointed out randomly, but her words amused the other three anyway, as they chuckled lightly.
"Come on." Bree shook her head, grabbing Emilia and pulled her away. As they walked into the next room, Bree opened her mouth to ask her. "Where is that brother of mine anyway?"
"Well, he was in my room. Butโ" Emilia began to say, and went to carry on by saying where he was most likely to be now, but Bree interrupted her.
"Why was heโ" She was about to ask why Chase would be in her room, but stopped herself when her mind went straight to the gutter. "you know what? Never mind."
Emilia chuckled. "What I was going to say, is that he's now probably with that Dr. Ryan dude, since Davenport made Chase the guy's assistant on his own project." She explained.
"Ouch." Bree winced, almost chuckling to herself at the thought. "I probably wouldn't be surprised if he was throwing a tantrum right now because of that guy."
The Hunter girl hung her head back with a groan, before directing her eyes back to Bree. "I'm going to have to babysit them, aren't I?"
Bree pursed her lips. "Most likely, yes."
โโโ ๏ฝฅ ๏ฝก๏พโ: *.โฝ .* :โ๏พ. โโโ
"Come on, rooster." Emilia giggled, urging Chase to quicken his steps across the sand on the beach, in the middle of heading over to where the Space Elevator was. "You don't want to miss the launch now, do you?"
"Why do you keep calling me rooster again?" The boy asked, seeming to forget where the nickname came from, which only amused Emilia more. She let out a laugh, shaking her head.
"Because you are one, silly." She told him, raising a brow. "Do you not remember? Oh, uh..." Emilia cleared her throat, fiddling with Chase's cap that currently laid on the top of her head. "Check me out, babe. I'm a rooster." She imitated his voice, saying the first thing that came out of his mouth after he woke up in the Mighty Med hospital, and he put a disposable glove on his head.
"Are you talking about that time I was brought to Mighty Med, and woke up with Kaz's intelligence, and he had mine, because he didn't know how to cure me?" Chase wondered. Emilia smiled at him innocently, and nodded. "Oh my god." He let out a light chuckle.
"Hey, at leastโ" She went to remind him of other things that happened that day, like Adam dressed as Where's Waldo?, Kaz with his whale songs and Leo running into the invisible ambulance, but the boy quickly interrupted her when he looked upon ahead, and saw that Dr. Ryan was about to begin the launch.
"What theโ? They're starting without me." Chase quickly latched his hand onto Emilia's to pull her along with him as he ran over to where everyone was standing. "Hold it! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!" He yelled, stopping beside Donald. "I thought I told you guys not to start without me."
"Oh Chase," Dr. Ryan hung his head back, rolling his eyes. "geniuses can't be botheredโ"
"I am a genius!" Chase snapped. "Stop telling me what geniuses do."
Emilia sighed deeply, wrapping her arms around Chase's bicep, and he instantly relaxed slightly at her touch. Donald placed his hand gently on his shoulder, pointing out. "I'm very impressed, you guys. Because of you two, we're about to make history."
"Yes, thanks to my expert engineeringโ and if it wasn't for Chase, the lug nuts would still be in a tin can." Dr. Ryan mocked.
"I didn't do the lug nuts. Leo did." Chase replied.
Leo had his hands on his hips, and a proud smile grazed across his lips. "And I did them well."
Donald turned to address the students that stood there waiting to watch the launch of their project, the Space Elevator, happen. "Behold, ladies and gentlemen, you are looking at the world's first Space Elevator, and my new haircut. Which one is more impressive, only time will tell." And the students applauded.
As Chase pulled away from Emilia to get a closer look at the Space Elevator, the banshee made her way over to Leo. "Answer: none of them." Emilia muttered, referring to what Donald said, making Leo nod in agreement.
Chase arched a brow at the chief scientist. "Don't you think I should do a microscopic scan with my bionic eye first just to make sureโ"
"Tut! Tut! Tut!" Dr. Ryan quickly interrupted the boy. "Trust me. My work is flawless. I graduated college when I was fourteen."
"Oh, yeah? Well..." Chase trailed off, struggling to come up with something that would overpower the chief scientist's achievement. "I went to high school for a year and a half."
Chase then walked over to where Emilia and Leo were standing. The latter spoke up, commenting sarcastically. "You showed him."
"I'm gonna do the scan anyway."
"Of course you are." Leo sighed.
Chase faced the space elevator, before he pressed his fingers against his temple, scanning the large structure with his bionic eye. "A-ha!" The corners of his lips stretched into a beaming smile, almost smug about what he's just discovered. "There's a design flaw in the braking system. He won't be able to stop."
"Are you serious?" Emilia asked.
Chase nodded. "Yeah."
"We have to tell Dr. Ryan." Leo was about to step forward, but Chase stopped him.
"No. Wait." He looked like he was getting an idea, making Emilia arch a brow, wondering what he's thinking. "What if we don't? He'll be humiliated in front of everyone and Mr. Davenport willโ"
The Dooley boy interjected, finishing off what the boy was saying. "Send him packing and reassign you to head of the project. That's a brilliant plan. Shady, but brilliant." He stated his opinion, while Emilia felt nervous about the plan.
What if something went wrong?
"Thank you." Chase nodded. "Now just one more thing. I need one of you..." He stepped away for a second to open up the box and pulled out the test dummy. "to strap in the test dummy."
Emilia let out a puff of air, before she grabbed the test dummy out of Chase's hands, turning around to head over to the space elevator. Although, just before Emilia could reach the door, Donald, who was on his way over, stopped her. "Oh, you won't be needing that." He faced his students, holding a helmet in his hand. "I will be taking the inaugural ride myself." He announced.
"Aah!" Chase and Emilia let out in a high-pitched voice, before the latter accidentally hit Donald on the back of his head with the test dummy. Emilia winced, making an O shape with her mouth. The plan was backfiring already โ it was not looking good. Donald rubbed the back of his head, giving the brunette an odd look, before he opened the door to the space elevator.
"No, you can't." Leo tried to stop him.
Donald looked back at him with a smile, missing the fear in their eyes. "Yes, I can. Watch me." He stepped into the space elevator and shut the door after him.
Emilia flung the test dummy over her shoulder to race over to the space elevator door with Leo and Chase. The latter quickly banged on the window, his whole plan to humiliate Dr. Ryan was now the furthest thing from his mind as he tried to tell the man to get out. "Stop! You're gonna die!"
Donald pursed his lips, and shook his head. "The capsule's soundproof. I can't hear you. But I read lips. Say it again."
"You're gonna die! Get out!" Emilia yelled, while enunciating every word that Donald would more likely understand.
"Oh, I guess I can't read lips." The man shook his head at her. "It looks like you're saying I'm gonna die." He laughed at this, not believing a word the girl was saying, making Emilia purse her lips in frustration. You would think โ if a banshee tells you that, you would listen? But in Donald's case, apparently not.
Chase turned around and ran over to Dr. Ryan, to tell him to stop the launch or find a way to get in contact with Donald. Emilia and Leo stayed there and continued trying to get Donald to come out of the space elevator. They had 45 seconds left on the timer. "Mr. Davenport's life is in danger. You have to abort the launch."
But of course, Dr. Ryan didn't believe what Chase was saying. "Trying to sabotage my moment with straight up lies? It hurts me to say this, but you're out of the air band."
"I'll just tell Mr. Davenport myself." Chase huffed angrily. "Give me the comm-set." He tried to grab it from his ear, ignoring the man's protests, until the comm-set ended up breaking in half.
"You broke my new comm-set." Dr. Ryan gasped, narrowing his eyes at the intelligent bionic super-human. "You owe me $15.99."
"Great. Now we can't communicate with Big D."
"I scanned your elevator. There's a design flaw in the braking system." Chase said irritably. "One of your genius algorithms must've been off."
"And you tell me now?" Dr. Ryan arched a brow, before gasping. "I take it back. You are not a good assistant."
12... 11...
"10... 9... 8โ" Emilia turned to Leo, who appeared to be joining in on the countdown.
"What are you doing?" She asked incredulously.
"Sorry." The Dooley boy chuckled awkwardly. "I always get caught up in countdowns."
Chase directed his eyes back over to the scientist and asked. "Where's the abort button?"
"Why would I make an 'I'm going to fail' button?"
"Because you just failed!" Chase snapped.
"Davenport!" Emilia was a few steps in to making her way over to the space elevator. However, her running footsteps were cut short when the launch timer reached 0, and the space elevator lifted off the ground and shot up to the sky. "No!" The girl yelled. Chase rushed over to Emilia, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulled her back.
โโโ ๏ฝฅ ๏ฝก๏พโ: *.โฝ .* :โ๏พ. โโโ
"Whoa..." Dr. Ryan chuckled when he spotted the space elevator through his binoculars. He pulled them away from his eyes and glanced around at everyone. "I gotta say, people, from down here, it looks like my launch was on point."
Chase looked away from the space elevator in the air, and looked over at him sharply. "Really?" He raised a brow. "Once the elevator reaches the end of the tether, Mr. Davenport will be floating in space with no way back!"
"I won't say anything if you don't."
Emilia scowled at Dr. Ryan, the scientist jumping back slightly, so Chase pulled her back, refraining her from hitting him. "Guys!" Leo called, causing them to flick their eyes over to him. "The elevator speed keeps increasing! I wonder if Big D even knows how fast he's going." If he did, they could just picture the billionaire inventor screaming on the floor of the space elevator.
Emilia was filled with worry. She rubbed her free hand over her face and tried to come up with an idea that could help this situation. Albeit, feeling her eyes start to flicker between her glowing and human ones, wasn't helping her either.
"I think I know how to stop it." Chase let go of the girl's hand and approached the chief scientist and asked. "What if weโ"
Dr. Ryan cut him off. "No!"
"I didn't even say anything." The bionic teenager furrowed his brows.
"You don't have to. I know it's gonna be wrong."
"Hey, wait a minute." Leo spoke up. Emilia made her way over as he continued. "Isn't the elevator propelled by magnets?" He asked.
Chase and Dr. Ryan pulled a face. "Duh."
"So, if we reverse the polarity, won't it send Big D back down?" Leo wondered.
Chase turned to face Dr. Ryan, when he realised Leo was correct. "He's right."
"I know." Dr. Ryan agreed. "What do we do? I've never been corrected before."
"Oh, and I have?" Chase scoffed.
Leo plastered on a fake smile. He couldn't believe they were still bickering, when there were more important things going on. "Congratulations, you are the dumbest geniuses I know, now fix this."
Dr. Ryan clicked his tongue, following Chase over to the machine. "Here." He started to type on his tablet, showing Chase. "This should reverse the direction of the magnetic current."
"Okay. Done." Chase said once he finished typing on the machine what he needed to. Emilia darted her eyes up, desperately hoping that by reversing the direction of the magnetic current would work and make the space elevator fall back down, and thankfully it did. "It worked." Chase let out a sigh of relief. "It's coming back down."
"I did it! I did it! I did it! I did it!" Both Chase and Dr. Ryan cheered as they jumped for joy.
Emilia pursed her lips and rolled her eyes at their child-like behaviour. "Guys." She called out to the two, and they looked back at Emilia. "There's still no way to stop it, and the elevator is coming down ten times faster."
After a moment of silence, the two of them faced the students and pointed to one another. "He did it!"
โโโ ๏ฝฅ ๏ฝก๏พโ: *.โฝ .* :โ๏พ. โโโ
A few minutes have passed, and they still had no idea on how to stop the space elevator. "Twenty seconds to impact! What do we do?!" Chase was panicking by the second, looking at Dr. Ryan, the chief scientist having no clue either.
"Look away?"
"Forget it, I'll save him." Leo volunteered himself and stepped onto the launch pad before either of them could object.
Is he crazy? "Leo, get off of there right now! The elevator will crush you!" Emilia yelled. He wasn't helping much, if he was about to send her into a panic attack because of his actions.
"My bionic arm is strong enough to stop it." Leo explained, holding his bionic arm above his head, ready to stop the space elevator.
"At that speed, the impact will carry all the way through your body." Dr. Ryan chimed in.
"My arm also absorbs energy." He added. "Maybe it'll withstand the impact."
"It's too risky." Chase expressed his worries.
"I hate to say it, but Chase is right." Dr. Ryan said to Leo.
"It's coming!" Chase warned Leo. He had his arm wrapped around Emilia's waist, when she turned her body to hide her face in Chase's shoulder, not wanting to see what was about to happen next.
"We don't have a choice!" Leo looked up, bracing for impact as the elevator came hurtling down to them, until suddenly, he stopped it, causing some people to stumble back from the gust of wind that blew past them. Leo grunted loudly, appearing to be struggling the longer he was holding it, until it finally stopped, and the students cheered. Chase tapped his girlfriend's back, signalling her to turn around and see what was going on. "I did it. I'm okay." Leo grinned, and Emilia let out a breath of relief. The elevator started to stutter, slowly going down as Leo widened his eyes. "And it's heavy."
Just then, Donald came walking out from behind the small group of students โ covered in foliage, and holding a parachute that he just dumped on the ground. "Mr. Davenport?" Chase stared at his father, confused and shocked. "How'd you get out of the elevator?"
"I ejected using the parachute I brought with me. You don't think I trust my life to some technology built by a couple of kids and an air guitarist, do you?" He rhetorically asked, causing Emilia and Chase to shrug. He wasn't wrong. Donald took a quick glance over at Leo, barely acknowledging the fact that he was still holding up the elevator with his bionic arm. "Hey, Leo."
"What theโ you're not even in there?!" He yelled in shock, taking a moment before deciding to try and get out from under the elevator. However, he wasn't so lucky as the elevator slammed down on his leg, pinning him down. All of them oohed in shock. "It's okay." He called out. "If I don't look, it won't hurt as much." Leo turned around to look at his now crushed leg, regretting it immediately once he saw it. "I looked! I looked! I looked!"
"Leo!" Emilia sped over to him, with Chase and Dr. Ryan following her.
โโโ ๏ฝฅ ๏ฝก๏พโ: *.โฝ .* :โ๏พ. โโโ
After the team managed to get Leo's leg out from underneath the elevator, Donald had to take him to the hospital. Later that night, the mentors and Dr. Ryan all stood in the common area while they waited for Donald and Leo to return, since they still weren't back yet.
At the sound of footsteps, the group turned to see Donald and Leo walking towards them, making a smile appear on Emilia's face, relieved to see her best friend. "Leo, you're okay!" The banshee went over and engulfed him in a hug that lasted about a few seconds before she pulled away.
"The doctor said that his femur and tibia bones were broken so badly, he'd need a titanium rod put in." Donald explained.
Leo pursed his lips. "Then Big D said 'that sounds expensive' and wheeled me right out of the hospital."
The inventor quickly interjected. "That's not what really happened. I was just worried he wouldn't be able to go on missions anymore. So I did the procedure myself. Now, he has a bionic leg."
"Wait, so," Bree scoffed out a chuckle, "thanks to you, Leo got injured and now has another bionic limb? I am beginning to question your parenting skills."
As Adam and Bree stepped away with Leo, Emilia stayed with Chase, as Donald pulled him and the scientist aside. "You two are my brightest minds. What happened out there?" He asked.
Chase sighed with a shrug. "We got so caught up in proving to each other how smart we are, that we did something really stupid." He admitted.
"I guess I need to learn how to work with others. It just ain't my thang." Dr. Ryan chimed in.
Chase looked back at the man. "Yeah. Neither is proper English." He commented, before guiding the chief scientist towards the hydra-loop.
"Hey, Big D," Leo called out to him, from his spot on the stool, "are you sure this worked? My leg doesn't feel any different."
"Well, it might take a little while for the bionics to kick in." Just as Donald said that, Leo kicked the basketball out of Adam's hand with a strong force. "Oh!" The man chuckled. "Good thing my reflexesโ" He cut himself off as the basketball hit him in the back. His knees buckled when he fell forward, trying to grab onto the cyber-desk for support. "Ow."
"Looks like it worked to me." Adam commented, receiving chuckles from the others.
