21.) Meeting about the Shie Hassaikai
Hibiki was running late. She has a meeting to get to but was held back by a problem at her agency then she stopped a robbery on the way there. She just hopes Nighteye doesn't give her a mouthful of complaints and scold her on how a hero should be.
She lands in front of the meet-up building, heading inside to the meeting room. She looks at all the heroes, who are all looking at her in surprise, and a few of her students in the room, finding Aizawa quickly and heading over to him.
"Aizawa!"
"You're late."
"I know. I know. I got held up at my agency then ran into a robbery situation on the way here."
"Guess I can forgive you then."
She chuckles and lets her mask withdraw. A few gasps go around the room in awe. But the loudest gasp is what grabs her attention, and Hibiki looks in the general direction to find a giant man in a yellow hero costume. She smiles at him before returning to her conversation with Aizawa.
"People typically forgive me anyway."
"Oh really? Then I revoke my forgiveness."
"Oh? Feisty huh?"
He rolls his eyes with an amused huff. "Were you informed of why exactly we're here?"
"Something about some gang and drugs or something. I don't fully know. Nighteye said he would explain everything in this meeting. He really just wanted to know if he could have my help cause I'm a top hero, and I work at UA. I guess he wanted someone strong and knows the students here." She shrugs.
~~~
Fatgum observes the room, looking at all the people here. There are a lot of heroes in here. How many more are we waiting on?
Someone else enters the room which catches his attention, seeing it to be the top female pro hero. "Wow." That's Echo! She's so freaking awesome! I didn't know she would be here!
Not only was his attention drawn but most of the other pros in the room. She is the most popular female pro after all. Compared to her they really are all like... like cannon fodder.
"Ah, Echo sensei is here too! This must be really big for her to be here!" Kirishima enthusiastically says.
"Yeah... I'm... getting nervous..." Tamaki murmurs. "There's... too many people..."
He watches her easily converse with Eraserhead before her helmet starts disappearing by seemingly crawling down her neck into the rest of the suit. Her long hair falls gracefully around her as she giggles. Fatgum gasps, making her look at him. He sucks in a breath at her beautiful piercing eyes. She gives him a gorgeous smile. A smile. A SMILE!
"I think I've gone to heaven..." Fatgum sighs dreamily, face flushed. She's so gorgeous... Truly an angel in disguise...
Kirishima looks up at him confused. "Fat? You alright?"
"Huh?!" Fatgum seems to break out of whatever trance he was in and shakes his head, looking down at his little intern. "What?"
"You said that you went to heaven?"
"A-Ah..." His gaze moves back over to Echo. "She's gorgeous ain' she?"
Kirishima tilts his head, looking off in the same general direction as him. "Who? Echo sensei? She is very pretty. A few of our classmates say that she was sculpted by the gods. We sometimes refer to her as an angel."
"Yeah..."
Kirishima blinks, looking back and forth between the two. "Ah! You know? It'd be super manly if you asked her out!"
Fatgum's face seems to explode in red and steam blares out his ears.
"Kirishima... Now might not be... the best time..." Tamaki mumbles.
"A-A-Ask her... o-out?! N-No! I-I couldn't! She would... definitely reject me. She's a gorgeous angel, and I'm–"
"Super manly and so cool!" Kirishima cuts him off. "Why wouldn't she say yes?!"
Fatgum seems to get a look of determination. "Alright! You know me so well, little intern!" He ruffles the top of Kirishima's head. "I've decided I'm going to ask her out!"
Kirishima fist pumps. "Alright! That's so fricken manly!"
Fatgum makes his way over to the two UA teachers. They look up at him as he stands there.
"HiI'mFatgumandIthinkyou'reverybeautiful!" he quickly spurts out then covers his mouth, blushing before pulling down the top of his hood over his face. Tamaki must be influencing him.
"Alright, it seems like everyone is here, shall we get started?" Nighteye announces before either of the two teachers can try to comprehend what the large hero just said.
Everyone shuffles to find a seat. Fatgum takes that chance to rush away to the opposite end of the room.
"You have any idea what he said?" Echo asks Aizawa.
"No clue."
After some short explanations to them of what's going on, everyone sits down around the giant rectangle meeting table.
"Well then, let's begin," Bubble Girl, the blue girl, says. "Since about two weeks prior, we at the Nighteye offices have been independently observing a certain villain group known as The Eightfold Cleansers!"
They, Bubble Girl and Centipeder, go into a deep explanation about recent events happening around. Some commentary from other heroes are spoken at some points.
"Hey, even if they're U.A. students, what's with the brats? Can't talk with them around," Rock Lock speaks up from beside Midoriya. "We're just burnin' daylight just getting to the real issue of what they're plotting."
Fatgum quickly stands up in anger, causing his chair to fling far behind him. "Enough outta you! These two (Kirishima and Amajiki) 'ere are super important witnesses!"
"We have reason to believe that The Eightfold Cleansers have made the dispersal of unlicensed goods part of their livelihood," Sir speaks up. "As such, I have requested help from heroes familiar with that line of work. Along with Echo as she's a certified ninja and excels at stealth."
"Long ago we smashed those kinda things to pieces!" Fatgum huffs angrily. "Then, yesterday in Red Riot's debut battle, Tamaki was shot by somethin' new, the likes we ain't never seen!" He crushes the candy in his hand. "A drug... that erases quirks."
Everyone immediately whips their heads in Aizawa's direction. Aizawa then goes into explaining how it's different from his quirk.
"Hmm," Echo hums, thinking about how they could obtain something like that.
"However," Fatgum insinuates the word. "Thanks to Kirishima riskin' 'is life to deflect the bullet, we were able ta obtain da contents of that one shot!"
"Wha! I did?! That came outta nowhere!"
"As for what was inside something truly sickening came out... It was human blood, and human cells," Fatgum finishes.
Izuku and Mirio immediately realize how they're connected.
"In other words, that effect is derived from a person... or, a quirk," Ryukyu, Uraraka and Tsu's internship pro hero, says. "A quirk to destroy other quirks..."
Another pro asks how this is linked to the Cleansers.
Fatgum explains that they're the ones making and dealing the stuff. Some more pieces are explained and put together for everyone.
"The quirk of the boss of the Cleansers, Chisaki is named 'Overhaul.' It's a power that can disassemble and reassemble any target," Sir explains. "A quirk that can dismantle to destroy and repair at once. That, along with the bullet that can destroy quirks."
Izuku and Mirio begin to sweat in anger but mostly fear for the little girl they didn't save.
"So he's harvesting someone or something..." Echo murmurs.
"Chisaki has a daughter named Eri... though one without a birth certificate, so the particulars aren't clear. When Mirio and Midoriya encountered her, her arms and legs were wrapped in a great many bandages."
"It can't be... to do something so hideous..." Ryukyu speaks sadly.
"Whaddya expect of this world of superhumans?" Gran Torino speaks up. "All it takes is the thought and any son of a bitch can do anything."
"What are you all talking about...?!" Kirishima shouts confused.
"See? We don't need any damn kids around. Slow on the uptake much?" Rock Lock sighs.
"Put it simply, we're saying that they're prolly making the bullets out her body," Gran Torino says.
Kirishima, Uraraka, and Tsu finally understand and looks of horror cross their faces.
"We don't know if they're trafficking them for profit. At their current stage of development, they're not very close to completion. Be that as it may if, hypothetically, they were using them as a testing phase and using them as samples for presentations to gather comrades. There's no definitive proof. However, say they gathered allies all across the country and amassed the funds. What if the completed bullets could take quirks themselves and completely eradicate them? Many dark, dark ideas spring to one's mind," Sir says.
"Just imaginin' it's gonna make my bowels seethe with rage! C'mon, we gotta search their hideout!" Fatgum shouts.
"So, you're saying that if these dudes had been able to take the girl under protection, then this whole problem would've been resolved right then and there?" Rock Lock asks, looking at the two students beside him.
"I take responsibility for all of it, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't put the blame on them. Even though they didn't know about her predicament... they all tried their best to save her. Midoriya stuck his neck out and tried to protect her there. Mirio made sure to think ahead... in order to secure her safety at a sound juncture. The ones who are most frustrated here and now are these two."
The two quickly stand up in determination. "We'll protect her!"
"Yes, and that will be our goal."
"Tch. It's fine and all that the kid's alive, but if one were to guess, the boss would want to hide the girl, who is the core component to his plan, right? And after all that trouble, she somehow makes it outside! And on top of that, to be spotted by these little brat heroes! Do you think he'd honestly keep her tucked away at the headquarters after all that? If it were me, I wouldn't. Because even if we were to attack, as long as the girl isn't there, then it doesn't matter. Have we been able to specify her exact whereabouts?"
"He's right. What do you think, Nighteye?" Ryuku questions.
"That's exactly the problem. We don't know how far ahead he's planned. If we don't finish them with one blow, they'll probably get the chance they need to launch a counterattack." The screen behind him lights up, showing a map of Japan and plotting points of interest along it. "And so, we've looked at groups and organizations that have ties to the precepts, as well as all of the known locations under the precept's control. We've left no stone unturned coming up with this list. We'd like everyone here to assist in searching each of these locations. Let's find the location and wring it out!"
"I see. And that is how us minor heroes come into play... The heroes selected are clearly tied to the list somehow! They've selected people who have familiarity with the area," Mr. Brave says.
"You were All Might's sidekick, weren't you?" Fatgum asks. "You've been awfully thorough tiptoeing about! All the while, that Erichan girl has probably been crying this whole time!"
Echo blinks. "He's very enthusiastic, isn't he?"
"Ignorant too," Aizawa replies.
She elbows his side, giving him a look of disdain. "Don't be mean."
"We will not become like All Might!" Nighteye huffs. "It's for that reason that we've so thoroughly analyzed and predicted the possible scenario. So that we could bring our chances of saving her as close to 100 percent as possible!"
"We mustn't lose our cool," Gran Torino says. "If we make a misstep trying to capture them, it could just end up fanning the flames. Just like how Stain's arrest performance only ended up in a giant PR boost for the League of Villains. This time, with a single hoodlum trying to release some quirk-destroying weapon. It's possible that those motives are at play as well."
"... You're overthinking it!!" Fatgum huffs. "If we spend all this time talking about things like that they're going to slip through our fingers!"
Aizawa leans forward and raises his hand. "Um, if I could ask a question..." Fatgum becomes silent as everyone looks toward the black-haired man. "I'm not completely knowledgeable about your abilities, Sir Nighteye. But if you have the ability to see the future, then can't you just look ahead and see what our outcome is? At this rate, we're not going to agree on anything..."
"That..." Sir trails off. "I can't do."
"Huh?"
"Once I activate my Foresight ability, it needs a 24-hour interval before it can be used again. In other words, every day, for one hour. I can see one person's future," he says, holding up one finger. He goes on to explain the intricacies of his quirk.
Aizawa tilts his head a bit. "Err, but isn't that more than enough? You should be able to find out a lot from that. What do you mean you 'can't do' it?"
Sir pushes up his glasses with one hand, leaving them there to cover his face. "For example. If in that person's immediate future. I see death. A merciless death awaiting them. What could I do?"
Echo finches back, truly hearing the pain in his heartbeat. "What..."
"This quirk of mine is only supposed to be used when the chances of success have been brought to their highest. It should be used for insurance. When there are too many uncertainties at play, it should not be used recklessly."
"Huh?! Even death is information, isn't it? Then you can put together a plan to avoid it!" Rock Lock shouts.
"It's not like telling a fortune. There's no evidence to show that you can avoid the outcome!" Sir retorts harshly.
"Nighteye! I don't really know what you're talking about, but... it'll be okay! You can take a look at me! I'll avoid the outcome as many times as you want," Rock Lock says.
Sir has his arms crossed on the table in front of him with his head down. "I can't."
It's silent for a few minutes as everyone looks at him and each other.
"In any case, let's proceed with the plan," Ryuku interrupts the silence to continue the meeting. "Don't forget, there's a little girl in trouble here."
Sir stands straight up. "Locating the girl and securing her rescue. Our goal here is to resolve the situation as quickly and effectively as possible," he says. "Thank you all for your cooperation." He leaves the room.
"Err... then, I'll provide the specifics to each of you individually..." Bubble Girl says.
~~~
Echo moves through the building to find Sir Nighteye. "Nighteye," she calls out as she enters the room.
He jolts in surprise. "Ah, Echo... how can I help you?"
"I know it was insinuated that you used your quirk on All Might long ago, and you saw his death. But he obviously came out okay with the way his retirement came about. But that wasn't the death you were talking about today, who did you see that's going to die a 'merciless' death?"
He remains silent, looking away from her gaze. "I'm not going to tell you."
"You're going to tell me or I swear we're going to have some problems. If it has to do with anyone in that meeting room that I personally am close with, I want to know."
He remains silent. "I can't."
Her fists tighten. "No, you won't. Nighteye, we might be heroes, you may be older than me, taller than me, and more experienced than me, but I will not hesitate to beat your ass right here, right now, if you do not tell me who you saw die."
He sighs. "Midoriya. My quirk saw him die during this mission to save Eri."
Her knuckles turn white though one can't see with her suit covering them. "I will not let him die. I will prove to you that your predictions can be wrong." She's silent as she observes him, listening to his heartbeat. "Who else is dying during this mission?"
"I am."
"And... you're okay with that?"
"No, but I'm a hero. It was bound to happen eventually. I have lived a good life."
She slaps him on the back of the head. "Don't speak as if it's set in stone."
He doesn't reply as she leaves. She returns to the meeting room to find the students gone.
"There you are," Aizawa says, walking up to her. "Where did you go off to?"
"I had to have a talk with Nighteye."
"What about?"
She looks at him for a few seconds, thinking about whether or not she should tell him. She decides against it. "Nothing for you to worry your head about."
"Mhm."
"ECHO!"
She flinches from the volume, and the two teachers turn to the voice to find Fatgum.
"Ah... Fatgum, right?"
"A-Ah... y-yeah I-I'm that–Uh, yes, I'm Fatgum!"
She giggles at his stuttering. "It's nice to meet you. You tried to talk to me before, but I couldn't understand what you said then we were interrupted. What'd you say?"
His face flushes as he awkwardly scratches his cheek, looking away. "Ah, I, uh... said... that I think... you're really... beautiful..."
She blinks then smiles with a faint blush.
"Aww, that's really sweet! You're a generally sweet guy, aren't ya? I got that impression watching you being really determined to rescue this little girl."
Aizawa scoffs at their interaction.
"Well yeah! That poor little girl is getting seriously abused! I want to put a stop to it now!"
"That's really admirable, Fatgum."
He flushes. "A-Ah... thanks..." He sheepishly rubs the back of his neck, preparing himself. "I... uh, originally wanted to talk to you... because I... uh, this might be inappropriate after what just occurred... but..." He gets more flustered by the second. "I-If... Be-Because I-I wanted to ask you after all this is over... if-if we could go..." He trails off.
Echo tilts her head. "Go?... Go where?"
"Out."
"Out? Out where?"
"L-Like o-on a d-date..."
Aizawa unknowingly clenches his fists then stomps off.
"WH-WHAT?!"
Fatgum winces, covering his ears in pain. "Aagh..."
"AH! That was so loud! I'm sorry! I was just surprised!" She worriedly looks over him. Well... as much as she can with how short she is compared to him. "Your ears aren't bleeding are they?!"
He pulls his hands away. "Nah, I'm good..."
She flushes. "Jeez... this is so embarrassing... Look at me, the number 5 hero, and I still can't even control my quirk..."
Fatgum looks down at her in amusement and begins to joyfully laugh. "It happens to everyone! I'm just glad that I got that kind of reaction out of ya. It's nice ta know I'm not the only really flustered one!"
She begins to snicker at his laughter as the rosy color to her cheeks begins to fade. "Again, I'm sorry."
He grins. "I'll only forgive you on one condition."
"And what's that?"
"Go on that date with me."
She smiles with a light sigh. "I would say yes, but I think it would be obvious that it was you if we went out in public. I would rather not have attention on this face and remain just another person out of suit."
"Ah! Don't worry about that! My fat form is kind of like All Might. I have my big fat form, and I have a small form. Well, except I'm not skeletal. I have muscle."
She blinks. "Oh." She smiles. "Then I guess I can say yes."
"YES!" Fatgum cheers, fist-pumping the air. "I'm gonna have to go tell Kirishima and Tamaki."
She laughs. "Well, I should get going. Hero and teacher duties."
"Ah, right. I won't keep you."
They exchange contact info, and she leaves to find Aizawa.
"Aizawa, there you are. You just like left."
"I didn't think I needed to be around with the two of you flirting. I don't need to be a third wheel," he basically growls.
"Aizawa? You okay?"
"I'm fine," he huffs. "Let's get the kids and return to UA."
"Alright..."
The two silently get on the elevator, taking it to where the kids are located.
"Is this a funeral or something?" Aizawa asks as his eyes land on the students sadly gathered at a table.
Echo silently follows behind him, watching him.
"Aizawa sensei, hello," Tsu greets him.
"Agh, call me Eraserhead outside of school. You know... it's just my luck... before you got involved in this I was going to recommend that your work studies be suspended."
They all seem to jolt.
"What?!" Kirishima huffs, standing up and slapping his hands on the table. "Why would you do that?!"
Echo moves to stand beside but behind Aizawa. The students take notice of her presence and give a slight nod to her as she does them.
"You were listening when he said the League of Villains is involved, right? That changes things."
Midoriya's face morphs into sad frustration which doesn't go unnoticed by the two adults.
"Aizawa..." Echo mumbles, making him look away from his students and bringing his right arm up to rub the back of his head.
"Here's the deal... Midoriya... you... still haven't proven that I can trust you again." The boy looks up at him. "Unfortunately, I'm positive that if I try to stop you now, you'll do something reckless and take things into your own hands." He steps forward and squats down in front of his problem child, looking up at him. "So I'll watch you. If you're going to see this through you gotta do it the right way. Use your head." He gently places his right fist to Midoriya's heart as Echo places hers on Midoriya's shoulder. "You hear me... problem child?"
Midoriya looks as if he's holding back tears as he nods with an, "Mhm."
"I'll only say this once, in case it gives you a peace of mind, just because you didn't hold on to her this time doesn't mean you didn't give Eri hope. So keep looking forward."
"Right!" Midoriya shouts.
"Aizawa sensei!" Ochaco cries out.
"I said I'm Eraser here."
"I'm your man for the rest of my life, Eraser!" Kirishima says.
Echo giggles.
Aizawa sighs. "Not interested."
"Sorry!"
"Take it down a notch, Kirishima!" Uraraka scolds.
Tamaki smiles. "Mirio?"
"Yeah, I know," he replies, standing and looking to his kohai. "Hey Midoriya, next time we'll definitely save her."
"Right! No matter what!"
"With that said..." Aizawa interrupts.
"Don't get too worked up about this," Echo says, watching Midoriya's face fall into curiosity.
"The Big Three are on par with the pros, maybe even better. However, you four will have much more reduced roles. Asui, Uraraka, Kirishima, you three aren't exactly here because you volunteered. You're not obligated to participate. It's your call."
"Sen–... I mean... Eraserhead!" Uraraka shouts, slamming her hands down on the table as she stands up. "After hearing a story like that there's no way I'm backing out now!"
"If you're giving us permission, Eraser... I'd like to contribute however I can. No one should hurt a little girl and get away with it," Tsu says.
"The pro heroes asked for the first years to be there. I think it's clear that the pro heroes must respect them. Especially compared to me... They shine much brighter than I do..." Tamaki mumbles.
"You never miss a chance to take a shot at yourself, huh, Amajiki?" Nejire notes, leaning in close to him.
"If there's anything at all we can do to help that girl we'll do it, Eraserhead!" Kirishima says, punching his fists together.
"I just need to make sure you're all good. It's fine, as long as you understand this. The goal of this operation is to rescue Eri. We can't make it anything more than that."
"The looming threat of the League of Villains is our biggest concern. We don't want another one of you taken. According to the police and Nighteye, they're not active partners in all this which means there's a low chance of running into them when we start investigating. But on the off chance we're wrong about that, and the mission suddenly involves fighting them as well..." Echo trails off.
"That's where your role ends," Aizawa finishes.
"Got it!" the four shout.
...~~~...
Just pretend Sir already looked into the future...
Haha! So Aizawa's going to be mad jealous for the next couple chapters and their relationship is gonna be a biiiiiit rocky... Don't wanna tell ya too much and ruin it!
