Ch 10: Americano and Cheesecake
No One' s POV
Han left the house at 4, making his way to town. Geo knew the directions to "Take Charge", so Han didn't have to worry about getting lost, but sometimes the amount of people provided a problem for him.
He kept eyes down, if he didn't look at people, then there's no way he'd catch anyone's eye. Though the chance of someone singling Han from millions of people as an alien is practically nonexistent, the fear is annoyingly too real.
How can he be sure it's all in his head? What if he looks as out of place as he feels and it alerts someone around him? In all honesty though, that was kind of how he met Changbin, so maybe he shouldn't be too worried.
Han arrived at 4:27 and decided to wait outside for Minho. He couldn't bring himself to go inside the place. Trauma? He wouldn't call it that, just discomfort.
Han decided to sit on a bench outside the store (that was a light blue in case you were wondering) and watch the people go bye. He made sure to only look in glances, up and down in a natural rhythm.
He had now found the human device he got from the store to be quite useful, looking busy when he really wasn't. An excuse, a pardon, unconventionally but it worked. Though no one really seemed to be paying attention and Han wasn't sure whether to feel more at edge or calmer.
While Han was waiting outside, Minho was almost visibly on edge. Almost. He had a reputation to keep up and with his boss cutting his payment, Minho worked twice as hard to not mess things up more.
Minho glanced through the windows looking for Han approaching the door, nothing yet. With every bell jingle, Minho's head swerved towards the door. But so far it had never been Han. It was 4:50, 10 more minutes till closing and Minho wondered if Han ditched him.
Minho cared about the outcome of this meeting, he doesn't really know how to pursue interactions with people, but if he finds someone he likes, he doesn't want to let them go. But Han doesn't know how much this means to Minho, what if Minho is the only one who really care about this? Should he let it go?
If only Han knew, Minho always resented the absence of mind readers. The world always forced answers out of him, he wished things were always obvious, that was part of the reason he was always blunt. Maybe if he was blunt, karma would deal him the same.
The boss called telling Minho that his shift was over, with a cautious compliment to which Minho hummed semi-gratefully. He couldn't really be too thankful towards someone who could literally take away his whole life with a couple of words if they wanted to, intentionally or not.
Minho left the store, the bell jingles, and Minho guesses he'll have to let Han go.
"Oh you're done."
Minho looked to the sound of the voice. Han was there? He came? He suppressed the stupid smile that was befalling his features.
"You came?" Minho said before he could stop himself.
Han raised an eyebrow, "Yeah I said I would."
Minho internally winced, "Yeah...you didn't come in though, so I thought maybe you hadn't come,"
Han facepalmed, and Minho thought he was the stupid one, but that apparently wasn't the case.
"Oh Man! I should've texted you!" he scolded himself exasperatedly.
Minho laughed, "It's ok. We're all good now, but I have something to ask of you before we talk."
Minho swallowed after Han started at him waiting for the inquiry.
"So umm..., my boss kind of thinks that I harassed a random costumer and even though I shouldn't have gotten mad at you while I was at work, can you go and explain to him that it was a misunderstanding...You see my paycheck is kind of cut way too much and I just really need that money back." Minho said, breathless once done.
Han took in the information in bits. He'd have to initiate speech with a human. Words couldn't describe his annoyance, but Han wasn't going to let Minho's economic suffering go to waste. He wants to be friends with Minho. Friends sacrifice things for each other, right?
Han took a deep breath, while Minho held his breath,
"Sure."
One of them relaxed, while the other stiffened as they both walked inside to have a word with the boss of the store.
The boss was a big man slightly chubby. Bottom line, he practically towered over Han. Shit.
"Hello sir!" Han said much louder than he wanted to. Well, he's gotta make sure big man can hear him from up there, what if the weather's rough?
"Yes, welcome to our store, we are about to close up for the day, but us there anything I could help you with?' he asks. It doesn't seem like he remembers the incident too well, but Han decides not to beat around the bush anyway.
"Umm, Minho's paycheck got lowered because of me, but it was just a misunderstanding, and I was having a bad day, so it wasn't his fault or my fault. So could you return Minho's paycheck back to normal, he really needs it."
After that mouthful, the boss gave Minho a quick inspecting look before he seemed to mull over the idea. He couldn't really say no in this position especially in front of his costumer and he could tell that Minho worked even harder than he before, so he decided to let it go.
"Sure, I will return your paycheck back to normal Minho, but I expect you to keep up the good work from here and no more misunderstandings."
Minho bowed and gave a quick "yessir" before they both said their goodbyes to the man and left the shop.
When they left, Minho suddenly spoke up, "Let's go to the café. It might be better to talk over food and in a calmer situation."
Han nodded quickly to the word calm, like it was the only word he understood. The calmer Han was, the easier it would be to sort things out.
"It's not that far from here and it's also not usually populated at this hour." Minho continued as he walked towards it, Han trailing after.
They both walked to the café in awkward silent, both unsure if they should say something and what to say if they did. In the end, no words were uttered when they had arrived by the café, which looked absolutely stunning.
If "Take Charge's" aesthetic was blue, then this place's aesthetic was definitely yellow. Though this place definitely had much more variety of color than "Take Charge." The building itself was yellow with the roof outlined in a pumpkin orange. Accents of light pink and blue jumped from the building once in a while. Near the top of the building rest a big neon sign in multiple colors, shining in different shapes of yellow, blue, and pink. The sign read the café's name, "Secrecy."
Maybe Han should start paying more attention to human architecture. It isn't advanced, but it does look good. Like ladybugs, they aren't butterflies, but they are still so mesmerizing. Han finds them very un-mesmerizing though when they crawl up on his face while he's sleeping.
Minho went on his way in and waited for Han at the door of the store to which Han followed. The store door opened with a ding, but the sound must've been electric because there wasn't any bell hanging near the front. It made Han realize just how ironic it was that "Take Charge" used bells instead of electric noises.
"Welcome to Secrecy, how may we-oh hey Minho!" a voice called out to them.
Minho smiled lightly at the voice, "Hey Seonghwa!"
Minho then looked around the store in confusion. "Where's Felix?"
Seonghwa looked out back and called for Felix. No one replied.
Until Wooyong ran towards Seonghwa, he was insanely out of breath, but it was a very charming look on him. "Oh Yongbokkie went out with that tall dude. Something about a dog?"
Seonghwa nodded albeit a bit curiously but decided to focus back on his customers.
"Uhh seems like Felix isn't currently here, did you need him?"
Minho shook his head, "Actually I came here to eat something and talk for a while with my friend Jisung."
Seonghwa waved a small "hello" and Jisung shyly waved back. "Would you like to order now or later?"
"Um, I'll order now," Minho said. "I'll have an americano and a strawberry shortcake. What do you want Hannie?"
Seonghwa's eyes raised up in surprise, "You finally found someone?!"
Minho smiled but shook his head almost sadly if you squint. Han's face turned slightly pink, but he tried to pretend he wasn't paying attention.
Han looked over at the options, everything looked too good, and Han had a high standard for Earth food after eating pizza, so he wanted to pick the perfect thing.
And he decided that he wasn't capable of choosing that perfect thing, so he let Minho decide for him.
"Umm surprise me! What do you think I should I get?" Han asked.
Minho smiled, taking it as a challenge, food is always the first step to friendship.
He told Han to go sit down while he ordered then and Han complied, finding a nice corner with a window view.
Minho came back to sit down with Han as their order was being prepared. Both of them wanted to say something to end the uncomfortable silence skipping between them, but they were both hesitant on what to say to start the conversation.
Minho had decided that he didn't want to bring himself or Han into the conversation yet so he decided to bring up his second favorite organisms (first being his cats) which, though he would never admit it aloud, were his friends.
"So how many of me and Changbin's friends have you met so far?"
Han was surprised and greatly thankful for the off-topic question.
"Umm, I've met Chan and Changbin which you know, and I've also met Jeongin. He's really cute."
Minho smiled at the mention of Jeongin, "Our maknae really is out there stealing hearts."
Han played along with Minho, "What! I'm not the only one! I should've known he was a playboy!"
With that their atmosphere mellowed out a bit, both realized that this was the right direction to go for, for now at least, so they continued.
"What about Seungminnie? Have you met him yet?" Minho asked.
Han internally questioned what Minho had on Seungmin. He seemed to dislike Seungmin mildly, but also always kept mentioning him. "No I haven't met him yet. I heard a lot about him though. Like a lot. Is there anyone else I still need to meet."
Minho nodded quickly, "Two more people. You still have to meet—"
"Here's your order!" yelled Wooyoung, making Han jump and Minho turn his neck suddenly.
Minho and Han got their utensils ready as the Wooyoung plated their dished on the table and left with a wink.
They both were about to eat but stopped suddenly to check if the other wanted to eat first or not. They both blushed, food on their spoons, centimeters away from their mouths. Minho put his spoon down to save both of them the embarrassment.
"Do you want to eat first or..." Minho asked. Han simply nodded to reply and took a bite of his food. He started chewing.
Then everything in him froze.
It was one of the most delicious things he'd ever tasted. Nothing on his planet tasted like it. He didn't know why but fuck he was getting emotional. Earth might not have progressed in technology but If their food tastes this good then maybe...it's okay.
His eyes were watering, but that seemed to awaken his soul once again and he moved to swallow his food and take another bite. He was practically rushing, as if the food was going to disappear.
Minho watched him, concerned for a while until Han looked up at him with the most beautiful smiled ever.
His face was stuffed, but his lips were still able to form into the line that could be considered as a pouty smile. His eyes crinkled into crescents, but you could still see his irises under, shining like the moon. Minho was taken aback.
He was about to speak his concern, but Han beat him to it.
"You are forgiven."
Minho blinked once. Then blinked again. After that he gave up counting.
Han paid no mid to Minho's confusion and kept eating, slowing down to savor his food now.
Then Minho let out a loud "WHAT!" and Han reluctantly decided to take a break from his food to explain his previous statement.
"I forgave you."
Minho stopped blinking, "Yeah I get THAT. But why? What did I do?"
Han pointed to the food, "This is enough to make me forgive. Sir you have taste."
Minho mentally facepalmed, but wanted to know if Han was serious, "Really, you mean it, because if this is a joke..."
Han softened and became serious to show to Minho he meant it, "I do mean it, and I'm not usually like this, taking material things as apologies, but you gave me something and you don't understand how much it means to me."
Han was tearing again, so he took another spoon of the food. It did nothing to hold his tears, but Han didn't want to neglect it anymore.
DAMN earth food for being so delicious.
Minho ran a hand through his hair. That was IT? That was seriously all I had to do?
Minho couldn't understand, but he looked at Han's eyes, and even though he couldn't understand, he saw the emotion. He had no idea why, but what he did meant something big to Han.
Minho wanted to cry now. And scream. A lot of screaming. But he was relived, so he ate his food. He wanted to cry again.
DAMN Han for making him want to cry over food.
But of course neither of them cried, they smiled and ate, both feeling relieved and rejuvenated with their meal. Somewhere in between it, Minho took sips from his Americano. Han noticed that he had his drink as well, so he took a sip from it. Minho watched him carefully, which confused Han. But his eagerness didn't falter.
So he took a sip.
His face scrunched up like he had bit into a lemon, it did not taste anything even somewhat similar to the cheesecake. It was bitter and Minho laughed at Han's expression, but Han kept drinking it and after a while he got used to it. After he got used to it, his face stopped scrunching and Minho stopped chuckling and pouted.
Han wagged his finger at him, "You sir a very evil person. Joke's on you, I actually like it."
Han took another sip normally like a boss, no scrunching at all. Minho rolled his eyes but gave small claps regardless. And they stayed like that comfortable and playing around.
While they were eating though, Minho thought more about Han's reaction to the food. He became concerned. Many things regarding Han concerned him. There was always the chance that Han had never eaten cheesecake before, but with Han not having money and all, Minho couldn't help but assume that there was a lot more than Han wasn't able to eat.
But he learned his lesson form last time and didn't mention it. They were both in such a good mood, and there was no point in ruining Han's fun with his food.
They finished their food and Minho goes to pay. As he is taking his money out to Seonghwa, Han gets up from the table and run to Minho, jumping on his back, and getting off immediately after.
Minho is taken aback (part 2). But he plays it cool and smiles to himself and continues to pay their meal. After he's done, he turns around and smiled at Han, who smiled back, and Minho can't possibly explain the relief in him. There actually friends now. For real. He still can't believe it. And It's all because of CHEESECAKE. He thinks he might love cheesecake now.
Han's POV
After Minho pays, we walk out of "Secrecy" and I grab his hand.
I want to show Minho that I have sincerely forgave him and that I'm comfortable with him. But it's not ONLY because of the cheesecake. Thinking back to the fight, it seemed childish to continue to hold on. And Minho seems to understand what's sensitive to me now. So I came here today with a plan to not hold on anymore, the cheesecake just made it ten times easier to express those feelings.
Minho seemed tense for a split second but melted instantly. He didn't look at me yet, but I could see his ears spark a rose color. Minho usually wears blue, but I think pink is a nice color on him.
I grinned, I was in a pretty good mood. I think today is the day.
"Hey Minho, can we got meet the others right now?"
Minho looks surprised, but that doesn't stop a soft smile from lacing his feature. He nods gently.
"If you're sure then we can. I'll have to text them first though, so they can all be at ChaCha's house."
I nodded and smiled remembering the name Changbin chose for their two-person group.
"So you're a supporter of the name then?" I asked.
"What if I was?" Minho said tauntingly.
"We might have to start fighting again, I don't think I can be friends with anyone other than Changbin that supports that name." I said jokingly.
Minho seemed to catch on and he laughed. I'm glad that we can use our fight for humor now, that means we've both moved on.
"That's a shame, I really liked holding your hand." Minho said despairingly while lifting up our shared hands.
I felt myself warm up and judging my Minho's face he seemed to have seen it too.
Thankfully he decided not to comment on it and continued, "Actually I don't support it. I only say it to tease him. But honestly, I think the name sticks. So it's not the worst name, but I think they can do better though."
I playfully sighed of relief.
Just then I heard a ding from Minho, and he grabbed his phone to check it.
"Seems like there are all on their way. Chan's freaking out though because everything's a mess, so don't expect too much. You get used to it after a while. Guess we should walk a bit slow then huh?"
I nodded and I don't know where it came out from but in the moment, I softly said, "I'd like to get used to it."
Minho looked at me with the sweetest eyes ever. His face remained in its natural expression, but his eyes seemed to shine with my response. He replied in a much softer, but somehow even more emotional, voice, "I'd like you getting used to it."
We didn't say much after that, as we walked towards Chan and Changbin's shared dorm, but our hands stayed linked, swinging beside us.
A/N: I think I got the main point across, though it could have been better. I feel like I'm losing interest in this book :( I also have so many ideas and such little time. It was always so much easier to write them in my head. But for the sake of determination, I'm going to continue this story. I'm near climax and if I work hard enough I'll be able to end it eventually.
