Chapter 3

I was getting ready to meet Nathan for our monthly lunch, we have been doing this since the first time we meet. Nathan is my best friend or should I say, my only friend. I was known as the quiet, shy girl all through middle school and my first year of high school. Until the funny new kid, Nathan came along and instead of hanging out with the popular kids. He walked directly to me a smile appeared on his soft features brightening his brown eyes.

"Hi" He greeted me with a cheerful tone, ignoring all the shocked looks in the other student's eyes. I glanced up from my sketchbook tilting my head slightly.

"Hi, do you want anything?" I asked my voice low putting my pencil down confused about why he would talk to the person everyone avoids. My eyes widened slightly as he stuck his hand out.

"My name is Nathan Barnes" He introduced himself, I hesitated slightly slowly extending my hand out and he firmly grasped it in his own.

"Amelia Fray" I whispered giving him a small smile which he returned with a large grin. He sat down in the seat next to me dropping his backpack onto the floor, just as our English teacher walked into class coffee in hand.

After school, he met me at my locker as I took my backpack. I looked up in shock that he still wants to talk to me, I brushed away a few strands of my dyed hair tucking it behind my ear, just as he started talking.

"So, I'm guessing you aren't so popular here from what I heard. But I really don't care you seem nice unlike other people around here. So can we be friends?" He asked tilting his head slightly he was grinning happily which seems to be his usual expression. Unfortunately to me, his grin was contagious because I felt the edge of my mouth tilt up into a smile.

"Sure" I nodded

"Okay meet me for lunch in an hour," He told me, and we have been doing that ever since. I looked in the mirror checking my outfit for our 48th lunch meeting since we meet. I was wearing a simple white shirt a blue jeans jacket on top I also had a pair of skinny black jeans and black converse. I put on some lip gloss t make my lips shine a little then slipped the tube into my bag along with my phone. My hair was half up in a bun and the other half down

Outfit:

I ran out of the house rushing into a shortcut to the cafe that we usually meet, looking around for a familiar friendly pair of brown eyes paired along with silky brown hair. I frowned slightly when I didn't spot him, he is never late. I grabbed my phone out of my bag to text him

                                                                    Nathan/Nate 😎

Me: Where are you?

Nathan: Behind you 😂

Me: That's creepy...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I whirled around to see him leaning on the wall phone in hand smiling as I approached him

"Hey, Lia!" He waved

"Nate!" I said as I hugged him taking in the familiar smell paint and paper mixed with a slight whiff of cinnamon. Nathan is a painter which anyone could guess by the random paint splatters on nearly every shirt and jumper he owned.

I loved that artsy side of him sometimes we would just meet for him to do his paintings and me to sketch in complete utter silence except for the music of course. He listens to Micheal Jackson 'Smooth Criminal' or o 'Umbrella' by Rihanna, while I listen to a mix of One Direction and Billie Eilish.

"Come on lets order I'm starving" He groaned and pulled me towards a table so someone could take our order I laughed as we sat down.

"Aren't you always hungry?" I asked rolling my eyes as he smiled

"You say that as if it's a bad thing" He retorted eyes bright, sparkling with mischief

"As your friend, I can say that it is" I smirked at his shocked expression

"Rude" He muttered in mock hurt

"And you love it" I responded a smirk still playing on my lips as a perky blonde waitress came to take or order.

"So, what would you two lovebirds like?" She asked chewing on her bubblegum I felt my cheeks heat up and I noticed Nathans's ears go pink.

"I-um-we" He stammered turning red

"We're best friends" I blurted out my face burning, I was probably the shade of a tomato, I saw Nate frown slightly at my words but then he nodded. It's not that I wouldn't date him its that I want too but I'm too scared to ruin our friendship he was my only friend.

"Oh, too bad you guys would be cute together. So what would you guys like?" She responded eyes flying between me and Nate. We ignored her comment and gave our orders, I got fries and a chocolate milkshake and Nathan got a grilled cheese sandwich with a soda. After we were done eating he offered to give me a ride home rather than me walking all the way back, so we made our way towards the parking lot.

"So where is your car?" I asked when we reached the parking lot. When he turned to look at me.

"Wait, before we go I have something to give you here" He said nervously taking out a small box and a folded paper I frowned slightly taking the both from him.

"What's this?" I asked looking up into his brown eyes.

"Just read it" He said fidgeting around I smiled slightly at his nerves. Opening up the paper I started to read.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Amelia Fray

I'm really confused as to how to start this letter since it could lead to the end of our friendship. It all depends on what you feel towards me, if not we can just forget about this today.  But I just had to say those 3 magical words that have been pressuring me for all these months. So here goes nothing 'I love you' right from the day were we painted together combinig both our skills to make a beautiful piece of art. This would become hard to believe or even unbelievable to listen to such a statement from my side since I am your best friend but I can't hold that pressure of hiding it away from you.

I'm really sorry if this ruins things between us but I just had to tell you

Loving you always,

Nathan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out as I looked into Nathans's hopeful eyes so instead of talking I did something that a normal Amelia Fray would never do. I kissed him. He hesitated slightly but he kissed me back I felt the edges of my mouth tilt up into a small smile. We broke apart smiling my cheeks where flushed his eyes were bright.

"Open it," He said giving me the small box which I took the opening slowly. I smiled down at the object tracing my finger along its delicate design, it was a simple silver bracelet that ends with a shining pearl.

"It's beautiful" I sighed looking up he picked it and put it around my wrist smiling from ear to ear.

"it's yours" he whispered back

Then his eyes widened moving to a point behind me and I felt his hand curl into a fist.

"Nate? What is it?"

"There," He groaned pointing, I looked over to see about three men leaning on his car they looked drunk they were holding beer bottles in their hands. We watched as one of them accidentally spilled some of it on to the black exterior of the car staining the windows. I saw Nathans eyes flare momentarily then he started heading towards them.

"Nathan no" I whispered but he ignored me, I followed him cautiously as he approached the men.

"Hey fellas" He waved anger hidden beneath his usual cheerful tone, one of the men looked up with bloodshot brown eyes and smirked.

"What do you want kid?!" He slurred swinging his beer around causing more of it to drip onto the car.

"That's my car can you please get off" Nathan politely asked, his eyes following the slow drip of the beer sliding off the exterior. Another man looked up, this one rather large with shaggy blonde hair mixed with dirt.

"Where would we drink our beers then?" He had a heavy accent either German or Russian I couldn't tell.

"You can find another car to drink your beer on" Nathan retorted a sharp edge this tone, a shorter man scrawny with sharp green eyes surrounded by dark circles threw his bottle at the car a manic grin on his lips.

Nathan stepped forward his eyes wild fleeting between all three goons, he grabbed a piece of glass from the broken bottle firmly gripping it. I widened my eyes shaking my head at him, the first man noticed my gestured and smirked.

"Ah what a pretty thing" He slurred walking towards me I shuddered, moving a few steps away. He moved behind me and I froze in place my eyes wide my gaze clashing with Nathans angry ones.

"Step away from her" He hissed his grip tightening his knuckles a blinding white. I heard a rough laugh that came from the guy behind me.

"What are you going to do about it boy?" He demanded

Suddenly there was a flash of a shinning object fly behind me, and I heard a sharp cry from behind me and a soft thump as something. I whirled around in shock to find the man unconscious his eyes rolled up his head blood dripping from his chest where there was a sharp piece from the bottle stuck deep in it.

The large man growled his right-hand twitching behind him as he quickly pulls out a black Glock pointing it directly at my forehead eyes determined. I felt fear jolt through me, I couldn't move my legs wouldn't cooperate. Then he pulled the trigger, everything slowed down I watched as Nathan cut in front of him.

The gunshot rang in my head.

The men ran away immediately as he hit the floor.

I let out a scream

Then everything went black

"Amy"

"Amelia"

"Wake up!"

Someone was shaking me awake I opened my eyes slowly to see three concerned faces leaning over me. A pair of brown eyes, a pair of green ones, and a sharper pair of hazel ones. My hand reached to my cheek, surprised that my fingers were slightly damp.

"What's wrong with her" I heard a deep voice ask

"Alec" Isabelle exclaimed hitting her brothers shoulder

"Amy? You okay?" Clarys voice asked. I slowly sat up groaning slightly.

"Yeah," I said but my voice cracked slowly

"What happened to her?" Clary asked Alec and Isabelle

"The demon scratched her, that demons poison makes the victim experience their worst memory quite vividly as if it was real" Isabelle explained

"Which seems to be quite a horrible experience as I could tell" Alec added as I took a deep breath in.

"You got that right" I whispered quietly. Clary gave me a hug whispering into my ear "Was it..." I nodded. She knows what happened that day I told her, well at least she knows what I wanted her to know.

Alec POV

We took her to the next room and I drew on an iratze rune on her wound. It looked bad, like really bad the bleeding stopped after I drew the rune over it and the wound was slowly starting to heal. Isabelle went to get a bandage to help the healing process. Her sister was sitting beside her fidgeting around with her fingers. Jace was doing some research on both the girls to figure out who they were.

Then she started mumbling saying a name over again, her younger sister's eyes widened and she got up about to wake her but then she screamed. One long note was a wrenching sound I rushed to the side of the bed to see if it was her wound but no, there was only a purple bruise was the long deep gash was before. She was dreaming another side effect of the demon's poison, Isabelle ran in a startled look on her face she probably heard the scream.

Clary was trying to shake her sister awake she called her sisters name once. I noticed that The unconscious girls cheeks were slightly damp from tears, I frowned.

"Wake up" I demanded and her eyes slowly opened I watched as she touched her cheek a look of confusion on her face. I couldn't take it anymore so I asked

"What's wrong with her" I tilted my head slightly only to receive a sharp slap on my shoulder courtesy of Isabelle

"Alec!" She exclaimed and I shrugged at her expression. Amelia slowly got up with a slight groan when her sister looked at us.

"What happened to her?" She asked

"The demon scratched her, that demons poison makes the victim experience their worst memory very vividly as if it was real" My sister explained leaning on the table near her

"Which seems to be quite a horrible experience as I could tell" I added

"You got that right" She whispered quietly and I watched her sister hug her and she nodded. I wonder what the memory was and how bad could it be if it made her scream that way.

Interesting turn to the story am I right? I don't think anyone expected that you're all probably a little confused. Sorry if it wasn't really relevant my writing skills aren't the best  Hopefully you enjoyed this horrible and short chapter the story will get better eventually just bear with me :)
