xxv. cyborg shark attack

——

Freya, Leo, Chase, and Adam had just returned from seeing the movie Shark Beach. Freya loved the movie, but she couldn't hear much due to Leo's high pitched screaming every time a shark attacked. Which was almost the whole movie. Freya smacked him to many times to count.

"Man, that movie was awesome!" Adam smiled.

"Yeah, Shark Beach definitely lived up to the hype." Chase agreed. "Although I couldn't hear most of it over Leo screaming." He mocked Leo. "Shark! Ahhh!"

Freya chuckled and patted Chase's arm. "No, Chase, that's not right. It was more like-" Freya let out a high pitched mocking scream which made the bionic boys laugh.

"Oh, it was not that loud!" Leo protested.

Freya chuckled, approaching Leo with a grin. "Dude, I'm a girl and I say you were screaming like a girl."

Adam and Chase snickered and Leo rolled his eyes.

"Look, it's hard for me to talk about, but when I was younger I had a very traumatic experience with a shark." Leo confessed and Freya groaned, remembering Leo's dramatic story that is not dramatic at all.

"You did?" Chase frowned.

"No he didn't, it was just-"

Leo cut Freya off, putting hand over her face and she smacked it away.

"It was the dead of summer." Leo began his story and Freya folded her arms as Chase and Adam were interested. "I was playing in the water when all of a sudden everything turned red. That's when I realized..."

"Realized what?" Adam asked.

"It bit me." Leo admitted

"A great white?" Chase asked.

"No." Leo denied.

"Hammerhead?" Adam asked and Freya had lost interest, walking over to the fridge.

"No."

"Tiger?"

"No."

"Thresher."

"No."

"Bull shark?"

Freya groaned loudly, holding an ice cream sandwich. "Oh my gosh! It was rubber. A toy shark! This story is getting old!"

"Wait, wait, wait." Chase cut in, confused. "You were bitten by a toy shark at the beach?"

Freya chuckled, walking back over to them. "It was a bathtub." Adam and Chase laughed.

"Let me tell the story, Rey." Leo glared at her and she shrugged with a grin. "Hey, that water was choppy. And I was not the only victim... Mr. Froggy is still missing."

"He's in a better place trust me." Freya remarked and Leo gave her a shocked look.

"You know what else is missing?" Adam asked.

"What?" Leo asked.

"Your manhood." Adam replied and the boys and Freya walked away, leaving a humiliated Leo.

~Mission Creek High School~

The following day, Janelle, Juliet, and Freya were sitting on the circle bench, chatting when Leo walked up to them. The girls had a CPR dummy with them because Janelle and Leo had an exam in health class with it.

"Hey, Rey and Juliet." He greeted the sisters and then looked at Janelle. "Hey, we still studying for our health class CPR exam tonight?""

"Your place at seven?" Janelle asked.

"Well, I was talking to her, but you're welcome to join." Leo joked, gesturing to the dummy and the sisters shared an eye roll at his joke.

"She's plastic and even her stomach is turning from that one." Janelle blankly replied.

Adam and Chase walk up to them and Adam pointed to the dummy. "Hey, ladies, aren't you a bit old to be playing with dolls?" Adam grinned at his brother. "Give it to Chase."

"It's not a doll. It's a CPR dummy." Juliet corrected Adam, standing up with her sister.

"Or in your case, another inanimate object that's smarter than you." Chase insulted his brother and Adam laughed sitting down next to the dummy.

"Sorry, Juliet, I moved on to someone new." Adam put his arm around the dummy.

Juliet blankly stared at him. "Okay."

"She sounds so devastated." Freya sarcastically mentioned and Adam pressed his lips together, unamused.

"Hey, Leo, maybe after we're done studying we can go see Shark Beach?" Janelle suggested, standing up.

"Yeah. Already saw it. Two thumbs down." Leo gave her two thumbs down.

"Really? I loved it." Janelle smiled.

"And eight fingers up!" Leo changed his mind with a bright smile and Freya frowned at him.

"I love sharks. They fascinate me." Janelle told him.

"Me too!" Leo agreed.

"They're the most misunderstood creatures on the planet." Janelle remarked.

"I know!" Leo agreed. "So they eat people. Leave them alone."

"I tried to see the movie again last night, but someone kept screaming the whole time." Janelle rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, we were at the movies, too. Guess who the screamer was?" Adam chucked, cutting into the conversation.

"It was them! They screamed. They are the screamers." Leo pointed at Adam, Chase and Freya.

Freya roughly grabbed Leo's shirt, glaring at him. "I'll crush you, Dooley!"

Leo backed away, chuckling nervously. "It was Adam and Chase! Not Freya!" Freya grinned smugly as Juliet chuckled.

"They were like! 'Ahh! Leo, help! Tell us when the sharks are gone!'" Leo laughed, mocking the boys and the sisters with laughing along with them. "You screamed. Screamers!"

"Leo, what are you doing?" Chase asked Leo.

"Yeah, that's not cool." Adam frowned

"You're right. It's rude to laugh in your faces." Leo nodded, before turning to the other students. "Let's go do it in the cafeteria!" Leo laughed, before mocking Adam and Chase with screaming as he and the other students.

Freya and Juliet stayed put, laughing at the brothers.

"You're laughing because you got out of it." Chase frowned at Freya.

"Leo knows I would literally snap his arms if he ever did that to me." Freya grinned.

"Juliet, I'm so hurt, I thought I knew you better." Adam told her with an offended tone and Juliet scoffed.

"I guess you should get to know me better." Juliet  winked at him, before walking away with her sister.

Adam gasped with delight at Chase. "She wants to get to know me better!"

Freya, Chase, and Adam walked down to the lab after school.

"I can't believe Leo told everyone that we were the screamers at the movie." Chase complained.

"It's pretty funny." Freya chuckled, sitting on the counter.

"You keep telling us that." Adam remarked and Freya smirked.

"I know!" She giggled.

"It's time for a little revenge." Chase said, ignoring the butterflies he felt when Freya giggled. He loves her giggle.

"I got it. We go to the aquarium--"

Chase cut Adam off. "No, Adam, we're not gonna throw Leo in the shark tank."

"Why not?" Freya frowned.

"No, I was gonna throw you in the shark tank and make Leo rescue you." Adam corrected and Freya chuckled.

"I think that's a better idea." Adam and Freya high fived and Chase rolled his eyes.

"Look. Mr. Davenport developed a school of cyborg sharks he used to guard his top secret underwater facility." Chase explained as they approached the console with the computer and Freya walked over to them.

"Why didn't he just use humans?" Freya asked.

"He's cheap." Chase scoffed. "See, the sharks are designed to attack intruders. He still has a few prototypes in storage."

Adam and Freya nodded. "Mm."

Chase presses buttons on a tablet and a cyborg shark pops up on a table from the compartmentalized lab floor.

Freya gasped. "Wow!"

Adam gasped. "Whoa! He looks vicious. I'm gonna name him Carl."

"Hi Carl!" Freya waved.

"We can use Mr. Davenport's hover technology to repurpose it for land. I'll control it with this tablet and then we can scare Leo in front of Janelle. Awesome, right?" Chase explained.

"Totally!" Freya smiled and Chase high fived her. They both turned to high five Adam, but he was struggling to free his hand from the shark's mouth.

"Why would you put your hand in there?" Chase asked.

"Because I didn't think my head would fit." Adam frowned and continued to try to get his hands free.

Adam, Chase, and Freya had released the shark upstairs where Leo and Janelle were. The shark was working great, they added fog and turned the lights off to add to the scary environment.

"Man, the cyborg shark is working perfectly." Chase smiled as the three watched on the tablet.

"Yeah, let's release the other two sharks before my hand gets stuck in them." Adam remarked.

"Yeah." Chase and Freya agreed.

Leo storms in and tried to snatch the table from Chase. "All right, all right, all right. You got me. Now cut it out or Janelle's gonna leave."

"Should have thought about that before you mocked us in front of the whole school." Chase remarked.

Leo sighed. "Look. Sometimes with the ladies you have to embellish to make yourself look good." Freya groaned and Leo continued. "You'll understand this when you have ladies of your own one day." He put a hand on Adam's arm. "Well, you will."

"You know nothing about women." Freya blankly stared at Leo.

"Aren't you and Freya dating?." Adam asked Chase, who got flustered along with Freya.

"No!" They both denied, refusing to look at one another.

"Really?" Adam asked and Leo was grinning. "Than, Chase, once Leo and Janelle are done practicing CPR on the dummy, she's all yours."

Leo and Adam high fived and walked out of the lab, leaving two flustered teens alone.

"Why does we think we're dating? We specifically said we are waiting." Freya mentioned.

Chase folded his arms with a scoff. "I know. We don't even act like a couple."

"We definitely don't." Freya agreed and the two made eye contact, immediately blushing and looking away.

"I'm gonna follow Adam and Leo." Freya cleared her throat and walked away.

"I'll follow you. But I'll keep my distance." Chase followed Freya, making sure to keep his distance.

Adam, Chase, Leo, and Freya walked upstairs to find Janelle sitting on the counter.

"Hey, Janelle, what are you doing up there?" Leo asked her.

"Trying to remember why I ever come to this house. Your fake shark just ate my real shoe!" Janelle held up her torn up shoe and Freya spotted the shark, swimming by them.

"Woah." She mumbled, backing up and the boys saw it.

"Woah." Adam gasped quietly.

"I thought you turned it off!" Leo said.

"I did." Chase said and presses buttons on the tablet. "Oh no, the cyborg shark must have artificial intelligence. It's ignoring my commands."

Adam frowned. "Oh, calm down. Just hit the off switch. I know exactly where it is, I was elbow deep in that thing for two hours."

Adam went to move, but the cyborg shark rips the CPR dummy from the couch into the fog.

"Whoa!" Everyone gasped. Freya stood behind Chase, touching his arm.

The cyborg shark tears off the CPR dummy's arm and throws it by the group. They all gasp and move away. Than the shark rips the dummy's head off and throws it, which Leo catches it. They all start screaming and fear.

Adam, Chase, Leo, Freya, and Janelle are now all on the kitchen counter watching the cyborg shark. Freya was squatting next to Chase, holding his arm.

"Where'd it go?" Janelle asked, unable to see the shark.

The shark pops up from the fog and they all scream. Freya gripped onto Chase tighter, leaning into his shoulder.

Adam shrugs. "Man, you think you know a mechanical shark and then he just turns on you."

Chase checks the tablet. "The shark is blocking my commands to shut it down and it's taken over the home security system."

"So there's a shark loose in our house that's trying to eat us?" Leo asked with fear in his eyes and turned to Janelle, grabbing her shoulders. "We're going to die!"

"Since we're all goners, there's a few things I need to get off my chest." Adam told everyone. "I have always wanted to be a florist. But I don't wanna pick 'em. I just wanna arrange 'em." He turned to Freya and put a hand on her shoulder. "Freya, I'm in love with your sister. Make sure you tell Juliet to remember me."

"Adam." Freya began and he nodded. "Everyone knows you love Juliet."

"We do." Chase, Leo, and Janelle said.

"Still, let her know." Adam told Freya, who rolled her eyes. "Oh, and Leo was the one who was screaming at the movies."

Janelle hit Leo's arm. "That was you? You said you weren't afraid of sharks. Why did you lie to me?"

"Uh..." Leo trailed off, nervously.

"Because he wanted to be a man and impress you." Freya confessed. "Which is stupid. Because Leo isn't man."

Chase and Adam snickered as Leo glared at her. Adam tapped Leo and he squatted down. "Hey, you know what'll fix this? Some daffodils."

——

The five are still on the counter, hiding from the shark. The shark leaped into the air and the five yelled, leaning back. Chase was holding Freya in his arms and Freya didn't really care. She was terrified right now.

"This is getting ridiculous. We've been up here forever. I'm out of here." Janelle hops off the counter

"Janelle, no!" Leo called as Janelle tries to run towards the front door, but is blocked by the cyborg shark. She turned and was stopped by another shark.

"Look out! Jump on the couch!" Leo yelled.

Janelle hops up on the couch before she could get attacked.

"Wait! We have two smaller sharks. Maybe I can program them to attack the big one." Chase suggested, slowly releasing Freya.

"Oh, they're right here." Adam picked up the bag, but it had a giant hole in it. "Well, that's weird. Where'd they go?"

Janelle was panicking as the three sharks were circling her. "I think I found 'em."

"That's good to know," Freya chuckled nervously and wrapped her arms around Chase's torso, leaning against his chest. He wrapped his arms around her again, holding her tightly.

The sharks were still circling Janelle. They were bumping the couch and Janelle was yelling.

"Ah!" She yelled.

"Hang in there, Janelle." Leo assured her.

"What are we gonna do? We can't use our bionics in front of her." Chase asked the boys and Freya.

The sharks shook the couch and Janelle yelled in fear. "Leo, do something!" Leo looked at her as it became slow motion. "Help!"

Leo leaped off the counter and Adam, Freya, and Chase yelled at him in slow-motion. "No!"

Leo lands on the shark and starts tussling with it beneath the fog. The four watched as Leo was yelling and fighting with the shark. It got quiet for a few seconds before Leo popped up with the shark in his arms and then got pulled down. The tussling continued for a bit until Leo popped up with his arms in the air.

"It's okay. I'm all right. I'm okay." Leo told them and than the shark roared, pulling Leo back down.

Leo continues to fight with the shark and than it all goes silent. Freya got worried. "Where is he?"

"I don't know." Chase remarked with uncertainty.

"Leo!" Freya cried, trying to jump off the counter, but Chase and Adam stopped her.

"Don't even think about it." Chase warned her, holding her in his arms.

Suddenly, Leo pops up from the ground holding the shark's fin and the lights turn back on. Freya sighed with relief.

"Sorry, sharks. This beach is closed." Leo threatened and everyone smiled at him.

"You're okay!" Freya exclaimed happily.

Janelle gasped, hugging Leo. "You did it! Thank you for saving me." She lets go. "And for buying me a new pair of shoes. I'm a size 7."

Janelle walks away as the boys and Freya hop off the counter to congratulate Leo.

"Great job! Since you took down the big shark, the other one's automatically deactivated." Chase explained.

"Dude, I can't believe you got over your fear of sharks." Adam told Leo.

"I guess I was more afraid of never having a girlfriend." Leo remarked.

"Wait. How were you able to deactivate the shark without getting bit?" Chase asked Leos

"Easy. I jammed the dummy's head in its mouth and turned it off." Leo shrugged, nonchalantly. "I took that thing down and didn't even get a scratch."

Leo walks over to Janelle, revealing the back of his shirt to be torn in various places.

Freya chuckled at the sight and folded her arms. "Yep. Not a scratch."

That night, Adam, Bree, Chase, Freya, and Leo are on the couch, watching Perry suck on a mint. It was disgusting and Freya hated every second of it, but she couldn't look away.

"Mmm." Perry makes disgusting slurping noises. "Minty."

"I question why I come over sometimes," Freya shivered with disgust.

"You know, some people do that with their mouth closed." Chase mentioned and Freya nodded.

"Cause they don't know how to get the flavor out. Get used to it, I'm gonna be here all summer long." Perry chuckled and then starts to choke on the mint, immediately gagging as they start to walk away.

Bree noticed and warned everyone. "Guys, she's choking!"

"Don't care." Freya sighed and went to leave, but Chase stopped her.

"Leo, you know CPR. Give her mouth-to-mouth!" Adam exclaimed.

"You don't give someone who's choking CPR, you give them the Heimlich." Leo informed.

"Oh, I know how to do that." Adam rushed over to Perry. "Get up."

Adam helps Perry to her feet and starts giving her the Heimlich. Perry spits out the mint and it lands in Leo's mouth, and he starts gasping. Freya starts to laugh at this and Leo was trying to hack it up.

"Did that just go in your--" Freya asked in between her giggles.

Leo nodded frantically. "Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm!"

"It's okay! I know mouth-to-mouth!" Perry said and Leo backed away, smacking her arms.

"Ooh, no! No! No! No!" Leo yelled as Perry starts to chase Leon around the room, while Leo gasps for air.

"Now I know why I come over here." Freya laughed as her and the bionics teens sat on the couch.
